Detailed description is Virginia Tech's PPE Program trains students to make decisions that are not only economically sound but also socially, ethically, and politically informed. Our social world is characterized by complex individual and collective decision-making problems that often cut across the artificial boundaries of academic disciplines. The PPE Minor allows students to address such interdisciplinary decision-making problems that lie at the intersection of philosophy, politics, and economics. The integrated study of these three disciplines trains students to make decisions that are not only economically sound but also socially, ethically, and politically informed.. . The PPE Minor allows students to develop a unique set of skills that arises from actively engaging in the social sciences and related fields combined with philosophical reflection. It equips students with foundational skills that are necessary to address some of the major socioeconomic problems of our globalized world and thereby promotes the educational vision of Virginia Tech to offer its undergraduate students a rich learning environment in which they can grow individually and socially and become reflective and engaged global citizens.. . Historically, Virginia Tech is a significant place to have such a PPE Program due to the groundbreaking work that Nobel Prize Laureate James Buchanan – a former University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Economics at Virginia Tech – has accomplished in this field. The PPE Program builds upon this tradition with the goal to educate students to become reflective and engaged citizens who, informed by the latest research, will be equipped to address the complex problems of tomorrow’s world.
