Where is your farm located?. . Our farm is located in North Lawrence which is halfway between Malone and Potsdam.. . How many cows do you milk?. . Currently, I milk ten cows, eight purebred Jerseys and two Holsteins.. . Are your cows grass-fed?. . The cows are fed a grass/pasture based diet. They are rotationally grazed during the summer. This means that they are given a fresh paddock to graze every 12 hours. They are fed dry hay during the winter months. The cows are also supplemented with a small amount of grain as well as kelp and free-choice minerals. This ensures that they receive the nutrients they need to produce milk and maintain a healthy body condition. . . Are you organic?. . No, I am not certified organic. However, I am very conscientious as to the management practice that I use. I choose management practices that I feel incorporate the best interests of my animals, my family and my customers. Therefore some organic practices do not make sense in my operation or are not affordable. I do not use bST, chemical fly sprays, or chemical fertilizers. I will use antibiotics in rare emergency situations. Milk from a treated cow is NEVER used for consumption. . . Why do you feed grain and why isn’t it organic ?. . The cows are given grain so they maintain a healthy body condition(weight).. I do not feed organic grain because at this stage of my business it is cost prohibitive.. . . Where are the cows housed in the winter?. . The cows are housed in a fabric covered green house-like structure on a deep bedded pack.. They are not tied and do not stand on concrete. (except when being milked). They are able to go outside as they choose. The barn is cleaned and bedded twice a day when it is being used.. . Are you licensed to sell raw milk?. . Yes, raw milk can be purchased at the farm. Customers must bring their own containers or there are glass jars available for purchase. Milk is available most of the time, but please call before you come to make sure that somebody is at the farm to get the milk for you.. . What kinds of yogurt do you make and where can it be purchased?. . I am currently making seven flavors of whole milk yogurt. . They are: . . Plain . Vanilla . Honey Almond . Maple . Maple Walnut. Coconut. Stawberry . . They are sweetened using local honey and maple syrup or organic cane sugar.
