Raef’s singer/songwriter style of music brings a fresh sense of melody and lyrics for Muslims around the world. Raef was born in Washington DC and raised in Maryland by parents who valued hard work, creativity, and a loving relationship with Allah. Since a young age, he enjoyed the outdoors - often going on fishing, kayaking, and camping trips with family and friends. Growing up, music has always been an important influence in his life.. . Raef studied computer science at the University of Maryland and during that time sang tenor in a comedic A Cappella group on campus. To pass time during lectures, Raef would often doodle, write poetry and lyrics on the sidelines of his notebook. After graduating, Raef worked as a software engineer, developing security software for the New York Stock Exchange. Shortly afterwards, Raef abruptly quit his computer programming job. "I enjoyed what I did…but only for about 2 hours a day. I wanted to interact with people and I wanted an opportunity to be creative," explained Raef.. . With no teaching experience or official training in education, Raef ventured into the classroom and taught computer programming in Maryland's public school system. "It was rough at first, but I quickly learned to enjoy it. Alhamdulillah, teaching young people allowed me to understand and appreciate the learning process.". . Teaching gave Raef more time to focus on his songwriting, often performing at local coffee shops and busking at metro stations. He was introduced to the national stage after his trio rock-band "Great Seneca" toured the United States of America as part of the "Voices for Change" initiative. Shortly afterwards, Raef joined the "Poetic Vision Tour" - a band of traveling musicians and poets dedicated to inspiring a cultural renewal in the American Muslim community. During his performances, Raef visited and shared his music with dozens of Islamic schools, community centers, and inter-faith events across the country. . . After 8 successful years of teaching high school students, Raef was awarded "CS Teacher of the Year" for implementing creative lesson plans that included songs on how to program in C++ and Java. More recently, Raef crossed paths with Awakening Records and began crafting an album that reflects his identity as an American Muslim and his musical journey throughout the years. After a decade of writing and sharing his music with faith-based communities around the world, Raef has finally released his debut album "The Path" to a global audience through Awakening Records.. .
