For over 8 decades Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self” has taken shape at the Rotary Club of Newton in a myriad of ways. Within our community, we seek ways to serve the needs of a diverse of population. From food, clothing, and shelter for the needy, to scholarships and camperships for the young, together with environmental projects, educational activities and more, we strive to make a difference in the lives of those we touch. Internationally, working with the Rotary Foundation, we provide "Fellowships" for study abroad, and together with the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, our efforts to eradicate POLIO throughout the world have been well documented. Additionally, over the past 3 years, the Newton Rotary Club has supported - both materially and in service - the sponsorship of a child in the International Gift of Life Program, whereby we have been instrumental in helping to facilitate life-saving operations for 4 children from underdeveloped nations.. . Joining Rotary - When first asked to join Rotary, most people think, “How will I ever find time to take an hour and a half a week away from my business?” After joining, Rotarians find that those 90 minutes a week offer a perspective that propels them in ways they never thought possible, offering gratifying friendships and business relationships you would not otherwise have gained, and through involvement in our life changing programs, an opportunity to change the world. Through local fundraising and grant distribution, our projects have included:. . • Providing support to over 240 families for Summer child care at the Newton Community Service Center. . • Providing camperships to over 350 children for Summer Camps at the YMCA, John Barry Boys & Girls’ Club and the Boy Scout Camps. . • Awarding scholarships and/or financial aid to High School seniors in support of their continuing education . . • Recognizing the exemplary community service efforts of high school students with our Student of the Month Program. . • Supporting the Newton Mayor’s Community Prayer Breakfast. . • Providing every Third grader in the Public Schools with their own dictionary. . • Providing emergency support to Newton families through our Rotary Emergency Fund. . • Supporting Seniors through contributions to the Newton Senior Center and Senior Safety Program.
