O'Connor High School followed the tradition of all the Northside high schools in being named after a Supreme Court justice, Sandra Day O'Connor, who served from 1981 to 2006 and was the first female justice on United States Supreme Court.. . The school colors are navy blue, white and gold and the mascot is the Panther. Students who attend Stintson or Rawlinson Middle school will most likely attend this High School, if not Brandeis High school.. . The design of Sandra Day O’Connor High School is based upon a village concept with 14 buildings around a central plaza. At the heart of the campus, a clock tower rises from the library/media center and serves as a campus and community landmark. Instructional buildings wrap around the library. The fine arts, athletic center, library and cafeteria are community-shared with convenient public parking.. . The school’s rural location benefits the Agriculture Magnet Program with facilities for landscaping, agriculture and animal husbandry. Fine arts, with band and choral practice and performance halls, surround the 990-seat auditorium with a stage adjacent to a black-box theater. Fine arts also supports photography, drawing, sculpture and ceramics.. . Value and economy played a significant role in the campus design. Energy-saving measures include motion-detection lighting; overhangs and canopies shield the buildings from heat gain. Because the campus is built over rock, running utilities overhead in the walkway canopy minimized excavation costs.
