In August 2015, BreastScreen South and National Cervical Screening Programme Canterbury merged together to form ScreenSouth (SSL).
SSL is a non-profit organisation whose function is to administer the BreastScreen Aotearoa programme (BSA) across the South Island.
SSL is also responsible for the administration of the National Cervical Screening Programme (NCSP) for the Canterbury and South Canterbury regions.

BreastScreen Aotearoa was launched nationally in December 1998.
This publicly funded programme offers free mammograms (breast x-rays) to eligible women aged 45-69 years when there are no breast concerns.
BreastScreen South is one of the lead providers for BSA and subcontracts the screening and assessment services to fixed radiological sites in Christchurch, Nelson, Greymouth, Blenheim and Timaru.
BSA also operate a mobile breast screening unit that travels around the region on an annual schedule..

The National Cervical Screening Program was set up in 1990.
NCSP encourages women aged 20-69 years to have regular smear tests and to check that abnormal results are followed up.
