Spud’s Colonial Restaurant has a history steeped in family and tradition.
The Colonial Restaurant’s original proprietor, Nicholas Lykiar Poulos was born in Cephalonia, Greece in 1897.
At the age of 15 Nicholas received a job aboard a ship and soon found himself in Philadelphia.
Speaking little English he moved to New York seeking out other Greek immigrants who gave him a job in a restaurant..
Nicholas soon opened his own restaurant and began a long career in the restaurant business.
Ultimately, he moved to Elizabeth City and opened “The Colonial Restaurant” right here on Colonial Avenue.

Nicholas’ children worked in and eventually took over and successfully ran “The Colonial Restaurant” until 2007 when the Poulos family decided to retire and sell the restaurant.
It was at this time that a local farmer who had been a daily customer, not wanting to lose his favorite hangout spot, bought the business..

Meads, better known as “Spud” loved to sit in the back booth with his very special group of friends and other farmers.

In May 2013 Spud passed away leaving a farming legacy and a restaurant that so many have come to love.
His daughter, Lisa and her husband Kelly soon took ownership and renamed the restaurant “Spud’s Colonial Restaurant” in memory of him.
