Detailed description is Established in 1799. Church built in 1824. Diocese of Bethlehem. St Paul's Episcopal Church Montrose,Pa is responsible for St Mathew's.. Summer Services In 1792, former patriots from the Revolutionary War Moved from Litchfield, Connecticut to a wilderness area known as Pike in (then) Ontario County, Pennsylvania. This area is now known as Stevensville in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. In 1899, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church was established by these faithful settlers. The original church building was destroyed by fire in 1814 and work commenced immediately to build a new church. The current church was completed in 1820 and was consecrated in 1824. St. Matthew's ceased to be a full time church in 1900, but as a result the church is frozen in that time period, devoid of electric lighting, central heat and indoor plumbing. Following St. Matthew's centennial in 1924, the responsibility for St. Matthew's church was given to St. Paul's, in Montrose, Susquehanna County. A number of clergy and lay ministers have conducted summer services, Christmas services, pilgrimages and retreats at St. Matthew's. The Church has also been the site of numerous baptisms, confirmations and weddings over the years, these events made even more special with the church's primitive beauty and history as a back drop.
