Detailed description is Our Beloved Steele Mansion I was eighteen years old when my then boyfriend brought me to Hartville. He explained to me his heritage there, and took me to see Laura Ingalls Wilder’s home and land which his step-grandfather "R. C. Lindsay" had helped clear after a tornado damaged it, the beautiful old Free Will Baptist Church, and of course his grandmother, who still lived there. We passed what used to be the Bohannan Grocery which was owned by his grandparents, Lela and William "Bill" Bohannan, and the school where his other grandfather, Frank Gates was a custodian and the quaint yellow house Frank shared with his wife, Barbara, on the square. This was the same Hartville High School from which his father, William "Billy" Bohannan graduated. . . . . That same day, he drove me to the top of Steele Bluff. . . . . The drive to the top alone was magical. Perhaps it was that my boyfriend had told me about what he referred to as Steele Mansion so many times. Perhaps it was how excited he was as he described how it was the most perfect place in Missouri. I knew the details of the view long before I took that drive. . . . . When we reached the top of the Bluff, I remember the silence. We pulled to the side of the road and simply stared. How long had passed before we spoke I cannot say. Strange, though, I specifically recall that it seemed to be a place I had been many times before. As if the presence of the home demanded our silence. I imagine it to be analogous to when a soldier pulls up to his home after returning from war. The familiarity, that is. Your mind soaking in the details that you’ve missed so much.. . . . Some twenty years have passed since that drive. My boyfriend has long since become my husband. We have shared nearly thirteen years of marriage, two precious little sons and a comfortable life in New Orleans. My husband has made tremendous sacrifices for this marriage. He left the comforts of Missouri for Louisiana. He worked to put me through law school and then to open my own family law firm. Brad owns several French Quarter businesses but is most passionate about his country music publishing company. Mostly though, he continues to work diligently today to make sure our retirements, the college funds, and the other needs and desires of his family are well tended to. All this while being the best father I’ve ever known. . . . . We have made many trips, usually a couple a year, to visit our family and friends who still reside in Missouri. Each of these trips usually includes a visit to Hartville and a drive up Steele Bluff to look down the beautiful countryside and admire the home. We have talked for years about our retiring to Hartville and living in Steele Mansion, of watching our boys run around the yard, discovering from the country land all that they may miss here in the city. See, although I may technically be a Come-hither, for Brad, Missouri has always been home.. . . . We’ve known since my initial visit that it was owned by a Senator from California who referred to the home as Senator’s Rest. Some years later, though, I read an article authored by him in the OzarksWatch where he described what Senator’s Rest has came to mean to him and his late wife, Babbie. Fascinated, many years later I wrote to Senator Stull and told him of our love for his home. To my surprise, he wrote me back! We began to exchange letters, and eventually we were invited to visit him at Senators Rest! Not long after, and with his death impending, the Senator asked his son-in-law to contact the New Orleans girl to come get Steele Mansion when he died. After his quiet passing through heavens gate, we were delighted at the chance to purchase Steele Mansion. I believe Senator Stull would be thrilled that we purchased the property and at our commitment to restore her and love her, as he did. See, the Stull's knew the secret of ‘Steele Mansion’ just as we do—it truly is a magical place. As a fifth-generation Hartville family, we will enjoy the magic. . . . . Our excitement to be part of Steele Mansions history began with restoring the home's original name…Steele Mansion. We have worked to repair and restore the homes interior, returning her to her 1890's glory with period furnishings and fixtures. We feel, though, that the mansion has always, and will always, belong to the people of Hartville. Now though, it will have a piece of New Orleans inside.
