Detailed description is We Help Clients (Adults & Children 11-18 Years of Age) Overcome Depression, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, School Underachievement, Relationship Problems, Substance Abuse and a Variety of Other Life Difficulties Welcome . . Welcome to the Strength for Change web page. It was designed to serve as a resource for those seeking information regarding psychological disorders and their treatment and the services offered at Strength for Change. We hope you find the information presented useful. If you have any questions, need additional information or if we can be of any service, please contact us by telephone or email. . . What Distinguishes Strength For Change From Other Treatment Providers . . Attention to Motivation: . . The field of psychology has made many advances over the past two decades. From talk therapy to medications and holistic treatments, doctors and therapists now have a much better understanding of how to effectively treat a variety of mental health difficulties. . . Despite these advances many people still struggle. Why? For treatment to be effective, the individual being treated needs to be a willing and motivated participant in the process. Simply put, the best treatment plan means nothing without the client’s motivation for implementing it. Unfortunately, one of the most pronounced symptoms of many mental health difficulties is the loss of motivation for performance-based tasks (school, work, socialization, etc.) and self-care. As a result, the individual often fails to comply with the suggestions and guidance of even the most skilled professional or the most compassionate family member or friend. This is often a source of great stress and frustration to those trying to help the individual. This lack of motivation is often mistakenly judged as a character defect or a willful act of resistance. Once the individual’s support system is frustrated in this way, interpersonal conflicts arise (or are intensified) and the individual’s mental health difficulties are compounded. . . At Strength for Change we have developed a treatment model that attends to the client’s motivation for treatment. One of our guiding principles is that motivation is the key to healing and change and that often times it is not under the direct (willful) control of the client. With this awareness and sensitivity, we have developed numerous strategies to monitor and account for the client’s motivation level. From the first session to the last, we work on cultivating, maintaining and enhancing the client’s motivation. . . Customized & Research-Based Care: . . At Strength for Change we custom tailor our interpersonal style and therapeutic strategies to match a client’s diagnosis (if applicable), age, personality and stage of change. This individualized approach is based on the American Psychiatric Associations Best Practices Guidelines and only utilizes therapies and techniques that have been proven effective in the treatment of the client’s specific mental health condition (depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc.). . . In addition, this individualized approach creates an environment in which the client feels deeply understood and valued. The spirit of trust and collaboration that results is one of the keys to motivating the client and improving the treatment outcome. . . A Commitment to Excellence in Care: . . At Strength for Change we are truly committed to providing our clients with the highest quality of care and service possible. It is not just a slogan that appears on our letterhead, but rather a self-imposed expectation that we strive to achieve during every single client contact. This is evident in many ways including our participation in ongoing professional development training and supervision, the use of various client feedback forms and our satisfaction guaranteed refund policy for specified services and programs. . . Motivational Cognitive Behavioral Treatment Model . . Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is central to the treatment philosophy utilized by Strength for Change clinicians. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was developed in the 1960’s by Dr. Aaron T. Beck out of the University of Pennsylvania. The Cognitive Behavioral Therapy model proposes that a person’s thoughts and beliefs are responsible for their emotional and behavioral reactions to life experiences. If a person is experiencing thoughts that are in some way distorted or inaccurate, then that individual is prone to ineffectively dealing with stressful situations and/or developing a variety of psychological and interpersonal difficulties. Research indicates that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is effective in the treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, post traumatic stress disorder and personality disorders. . . The Motivational Cognitive Behavioral Treatment Model was developed by Bernard Ivin and is practiced by Strength for Change clinicians. It is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with other research-based treatment approaches including (but not limited to) Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change Theory, Family Focused Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy. The ultimate goal of Motivational Cognitive Behavioral Treatment is to teach clients to become their own therapist capable of using a variety of “life skills” to effectively manage their emotions and behaviors. In many cases clients learn a step by step system for restructuring their thought process, generating self-motivation, understanding and changing negative emotional and behavioral reactions, developing self-discipline and living a "solution focused" lifestyle. . . Bernard Ivin, LCSW -- Program Founder/Director & Clinician . . Bernard Ivin is a graduate of Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA (1988) and Rutgers University School of Social Work in New Brunswick (1993). At Moravian Bernard played basketball and earned many athletic honors including small college All-American. In 1998, Bernard was inducted into the Moravian College Sports Hall of Fame. . . Bernard has devoted his professional career to the service of others. In addition to his extensive clinical experience, Bernard coached high school basketball from 1988-98. Bernard chose the human service field in part because of the gratitude he feels for the people who made such a difference in his life. The following statement expresses his inspiration for assisting others in their pursuit of an empowered and fulfilling life. . . "Growing up, very few of the kids I hung out with made it out of our neighborhood...we all had problems and made many mistakes…some very serious and life altering…one advantage I had over many of them was that I had people in my life who cared about me and saw strengths in me that I didn't know existed...realizing how important that support was is what drives me to give others the compassion, understanding and guidance they need to overcome adversity and achieve their personal and professional best..." -- Bernard Ivin . . Bernard is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with extensive training and experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the treatment of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, substance abuse and relationship difficulties. Bernard's commitment to specialized training reflects his desire to provide clients with the highest quality of care and service possible. As the founder and program director of Strength for Change, Bernard’s responsibilities include therapy with clients, direct supervision of clinical staff, client intake coordination and program development. In addition, Bernard has authored a book titled A Parent’s Handbook: How To Obtain Counseling Services For Your Child, and he is the creator of the 1-2-3 Succeed Planner.
