Detailed description is Annual festival celebrating African-American contribution to American culture The Kuumba Festival was created to recognize, showcase, and celebrate African American Cultural contributions to American culture. The name KUUMBA in Swahili means CREATIVITY. Kuumba is also one of the seven principles of Kwaanza. Scotland County has a rich African American cultural heritage which goes back to the earliest years of the republic. In fact, many of our local families have ties that extend back to before the Civil War. The first Kuumba Festival in Scotland County was held in 1990. For the past eight years the African American Heritage Committee, Inc. has sponsored the Scotland County festival. This festival features dancing, drumming, storytelling and socializing, as well as a musical menu that runs from gospel to jazz. Booth spaces are available for vending food, crafts, artifacts, books, African clothing and artwork. Items should be in keeping with the festival theme. All vendors must have a NC tax ID number. Churches, schools and non-profit organizations must attach a letter with their application proving they are tax-exempted. Educational/Informational booths do not pay a vending fee. AAHC, Inc. focuses on presenting to our community professional entertainers, thus providing greater culture exposure to our area. The entertainment is at the highest professional level possible.. .
