Detailed description is The degondABA School is a nonprofit designed to improve the lives of adults diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (e.g., Autism). In the city of Louisville, KY and surrounding counties, individuals diagnosed with developmental and intellectual disabilities (e.g., Autism, Down syndrome, etc.) have very few options for continuing to receive effective services as they graduate or age out of the public school system and its programs that they had been receiving since First Steps. While in the school system, these individuals have limited contact with learning and acquiring the functional living or vocational skills necessary to attain independence and inclusion in everyday society. Families across the city, state, and country worry about what will happen with their son or daughter when services practically disappear after the age of 18 or 21. Due to the state of services in the Louisville, KY area, I am working to develop a program for these individuals with the following mission statement:. . "The degondABA School for Adult Behavior Acquisition is an innovative, hybrid program combining elements of behavior analysis, vocational rehabilitation, and community living supports. degondABA is designed to educate and empower all adults, particularly those diagnosed with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, to gain knowledge and mastery of independent living and job-related skills in order to succeed in living autonomously and retaining gainful employment. Through a low student to teacher ratio, intensive learning program, and the utilization of both individualized and group curriculum, students are expected to be graduated from the school within a year, established with employment, and equipped with the means and skills for attaining self-sufficient living. ". . The idea for this program came about after working in the Louisville, KY area for the past 3 years as a Behavior Specialist, providing direct services for adults and children diagnosed with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities. I have seen firsthand what Adult Day Treatment programs are available for adults with these types of diagnoses and feel that a new, more proactive, and more targeted program is a vital need for this population. I am very passionate about improving the lives of these individuals and getting each of my students/participants/clients to a point where they are able to be independent and to give back to their community.. . - Funds/Donations will be dedicated to purchasing/leasing a building for the school and purchasing materials for the program. . *Note: The degondABA School is now a tax-exempt entity.
