Detailed description is Church of St. John the Evangelist is an historic Episcopal church located in the village of Tannersville, part of the Town of Hunter, New York. The church was designed by the famous architect William Halsey Wood and it is believed to be his first church design. Built in 1885 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Wood designed churches and cathedrals across the U.S. and China. The Breslin Tower and the university quad at the University of the South in Sewanee,Tn. are his designs. He also designed Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY. ( refer to Wikipedia for more information on W.H.W.). The beautiful stenciled ceiling was designed and executed by Brother Maynard of the Cowley Lay-brothers. Brother Maynard also designed and painted the ceiling in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Iffley Rd. Oxford, England.. . Currently, our church is in need of major restoration. The small summer congregation has worked diligently for the past few years to raise money for this costly work.. . Donations for Saving and Restoring St. John's may be sent to :.
