This house, known originally as "The Oaks" was built in 1845 by Jesse Gibson, a prolific builder from Tennessee who settled in what was then Greene County in the 1830s. His daughter, Mary Johnson Gibson, married Philip Happel in 1844, and they received the house as a wedding present.. . Philip Happel was born in 1816 in Alsace, France. He arrived in new York City on the 5th of June in 1832 aboard the ship "Eugene". He fought in the Seminole Wars before settling in Greensboro. He became a tailor and merchant.. . He and Mary had four children, Thomas, Henry, Eva, Susan, and Philip. Philip Jr died in 1868.. . Philip Happel died in 1883. He is buried in Trenton, Tennesee, where his son lived.. . After the Happels, the Wadsworth, Stickney and Bohlen families have made this their home.. . It is now the residence of Matt Cornelson and Ian Crawford, who are in the process of restoring the house.
