While performing volitional or ethical action, one has to exert one’s will or make an effort. This is not kriya, as kriya is effortless activity; it is spontaneous, natural, or automatic. At the same time, it is not automatic reflex action, nor like the mechanical activity of a robot, nor the obsessional behavior of a psychoneurotic; all of these activities are determined, not free. In kriya there is freedom; one that is not bound to perform the activity; one simply allows the activity to flow. The activity is perfectly in tune with oneself. One can, if one likes, check or dismiss the whole process. Kriya, therefore, has both the merits of freedom and effortlessness. It is, therefore, called spontaneity (spanda). Spanda, or kriya, may be called a kind of natural activity, free and spontaneous…. . “That karma is effortful (sayasa) and kriya is effortless (anayasa) is not the only distinction between karma and kriya; the more significant distinction between the two is that karma is suggestive of the state of imperfection, while kriya arises out of the state of perfection or fullness. The psychology (and also the logic) of voluntary action (karma) is that we do action (karma) only when we feel some lack or want in us; in order to fulfill that lack or want, we perform action. So, karma suggests lack or imperfection. That is why in Advaita Vedanta, as also in Kashmir Shaivism, karma is not accepted in the ultimate Reality (Brahman or Shiva), which is a state of perfection. But so far as kriya is concerned, it is not due to some lack or want, it arises out of the fullness of ananda. The nature of ananda is to flow or overflow in spontaneous activity. The play of a child is an example of this. It is not that in order to have ananda the child takes to playing; in fact, ananda is already there (in the child), which expresses itself in the form of playing. This is kriya.
