Detailed description is The Warren Project is a newly forming non-profit organization dedicated to holistic health and experiential learning in the natural environment.
The Warren Project Adventure Therapy and Outdoor Mentoring Program on the Oregon Coast is a program of the Olalla Center for Children and Families..
.
Our Story began when a group of like minded individuals came together through happenstance and discovered they could change the world .
.
.
or at least our little part of it.
.
.
Local Judge Paulette Sanders reached out to Benjamin Williams, Clinical Director of the Olalla Center for Children and Families, and Dee Teem, (then) Director of Community Relations and Development for Community Services Consortium (now) Resource Development Director of the Olalla Center, and asked them to create a mentoring program for the youth she continually saw in her courtroom (primarily youth in foster care).
Judge Sanders was seeing so many children and teens in her courtroom, who were in need of positive adult role models (mentors).
Benjamin and Dee, accepted the challenge and set out to develop an effective mentoring program (our first goal)..
.
To shape a mentoring program you need caring adults in the community and in walked Mike Warren.
Mike was looking for a way to help young people in his community through the use of his land and his vocational skills.
His stories of growing up "running wild" in the beautiful natural lands along the coast and how nature helps keep him centered inspired us to name the project.
.
Several people helped us along the way with ideas and support, teachings and sharing skills.
We thank them all..
The most significant contribution thus far was made by Don Andre.
Don's generous gift of the use of his Forest Hill property, which is part of the Oregon Coast Community Forest Association, has made this project possible.
Don's enthusiasm and positive energy is inspiring, he has a lengthy career in the psychology profession, working with youth, and a deep rooted passion for preserving our coastal forest lands.
He too grew up play in our natural forest lands on the Oregon Coast.
.
Adventure Therapy with a focus on nature connection, and Outdoor Mentoring take place in multiple public and private natural settings throughout Lincoln County.
But Forest Hill is nexus, it our hub and where most of the therapy work and group mentoring are conducted.
.
.
The more we talked, the more we dreamed and the more people became engaged in the conversation and wanted to help.
Benjamin's experience as a licensed clinical psychologist and avid outdoors man got him thinking about mentoring from an outdoor perspective and looking for ways to link mental and physical health into the project.
Dee's background in program development and mentoring, her love of the outdoors, environmental conservation, arts and culture had her thinking about ways to weave all of this into our developing adventure therapy and outdoor mentoring project.
Blending the resources and themes of works including "The Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature", "Last Child in the Woods" and "Outdoors Explorers Mentoring Program".
We started down this path..
.
Our story is still developing and the work has begun.
Our first groups of explorers are participating in the outdoor based therapy, and mentors are being screened and matched with youth all the time.
.
.
Purpose: To fill gaps in opportunities for at risk populations, and to provide opportunities for all people to experience nature's health benefits through adventure therapy, mentoring, vocational discoveries, life-long learning, arts, culture and environmental stewardship..
.
The Warren Project provides opportunities for physical and mental health therapies / activities, and experiential learning in a natural setting.
We offer opportunities for community volunteerism and mentoring; positive, healthy learning environments, and the guidance of experienced professionals..
.
The Warren Project is comprised of community members, educators, conservation stewards, physical and mental health professionals, artists, writers, mindfulness practitioners, mentors, athletes and lots of good, honest, hard working people who want to share their talents and cultures to benefit youth and families, and strengthen our community.
.
.
Long term goal: to develop an outdoor campus, a place where people can escape to the natural environment to learn, grow, and experience the physical and mental health benefits of the outdoors in a new way.
