Detailed description is The Well-Read Cat Feline Rescue and Literacy Project is a small-scale private effort committed to feline rescue and literacy promotion. Because our rescue project is small, we devote lots of time to the cats we pull from our local high kill shelter. We work hard to make sure the cats and kittens are socialized, healthy and ready for the adjustment to permanent families.. . Our adoption fees are low. Our goal is never to charge more than we actually have in the care of the cat - food, medical treatment and supplies excluded. All cats we take in are spayed or neutered before leaving, and have vaccinations including rabies if old enough. They are also given topical flea treatment. Our local high-kill shelter charges us $40 to pull a cat or kitten. We do not seek any rehoming fee above that. We are not looking to make any money, just to recoup the initial fee of pulling the cat or kitten so we can afford to save another life.. . We are not draconian in our adoption policies, but are firm on a few requirements. We will not, for instance, adopt to owners who plan to declaw. Declawing is a cruel practice that involves the amputation of each digit on the cat's front paws and the procedure can leave cats with crippling pain and psychological trauma.. . We prefer that adopters keep the cat indoors. With the proliferation of coyotes in our area and other dangers, the cat will have a long and happy life.. . Dogs in a home are fine, as are children. However, we would like to ascertain that a dog in your home is cat friendly, and your child understands the proper way to handle a cat.. . Also, in the event that the adoptive parent must relinquish the cat, we would like to assist in the rehoming process if possible.
