Youth Empowerment Happens Here The Three Commitments that youth make upon joining Youth ERA are:. . 1. Be working towards high school or alternative school graduation –or- a GED. For youth who have already completed high school, this can mean a commitment to lifelong learning in the form of post-secondary education, internships, apprenticeships or volunteer work, etc. . . 2. Obey the law*. This includes not using drugs (illegal drugs, alcohol, cigarettes). If you are currently using any drugs or alcohol, we will work with you to help you quit. For youth of legal age this also means not using any illegal drugs in your recreational time, while using the Youth MOVE Center, or while working with OFSN/Youth MOVE Oregon: Lane County Chapter.. . *The following situations are not in violation of the “obey the law” commitment: . o Undocumented immigrant status . o Homeless and camping or sleeping on the streets (for example, abandoned buildings, parks, or construction sites). o Civil disobedience in political action. . 3. Identify and follow your Life Assignment. (A life assignment is a long term or short term goal you set for yourself. It can be about your career, personal growth, culture, world change, etc.) Meet weekly with a site supervisor to review progress on Life Assignments.. . . We ask that youth follow these three commitments because we believe that in order for youth to have a chance at being successful in life, they need to stay out of the Juvenile Justice System. This does not mean that OFSN/Youth MOVE Oregon: Lane County Chapter necessarily believes that all laws in place are just and correct. All staff, volunteers, and interns also follow the Three Commitments, and in this way they model law abiding behavior to the youth. We recognize that youth are often oppressed by adults expecting them to do things “because I said so.” Demonstrating to the youth that we won't ask them to do anything we ourselves wouldn't do, helps break down barriers between youth and adults and reinforce that, regardless of age, we are on a more equal level.
