Detailed description is Trinidad Miners Baseball Alumni association was formed to assist in raising funds for the Miner baseball team and former players to play the game we love! The Trinidad Miners Baseball Alumni Association (the "Association") was formed in 1994. The Association's main purpose is to raise funds for the Trinidad High School baseball program and provide former players of Trinidad High School the opportunity to play the game we love.. Once a year former high school players would scrimmage against the high school team. The alumni that showed up were very competitive and enthusiastic. We decided that it would be great to have these older players back to show off their skills and be a positive influence on the younger kids and hopefully motivate them to raise their level of play. Therefore, the idea of having a baseball tournament between alumni baseball players of the high school was born.. . In 1994 Joe Saccomanno, Chris Furia and John Santistevan planned and organized the first tournament and named it the Trinidad Miners Baseball Alumni Classic (the "Classic"). The Classic was a big success with fifty-six players showing up to play and the fan support was outstanding. The baseball play was average at best, but everyone had a great time. The tournament was a great success with many individuals commenting how much fun it was to see old friends and to see the different generations of the Trinidad High School Baseball family all together. It is truly a joy to see men from the ages of 19 to 78 playing together on the same field and demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship. Over the years, more than 120 different alumni have participated in the event.. . The Classic consists of a four-team round robin tournament with each team playing two games. A long ball-hitting contest is conducted each year with winners having their name engraved on a traveling trophy. The Long Ball Competition was started in 1995. Recognition for outstanding play during the Classic is also awarded to players each year. This award was initiated in 1997 in recognition of Frank Saccomanno and is called the "Iron Man Award". In 1998 the Association started an "Honored Alumni" recognizing one of our own. In 2007 we lost one of our most dedicated and devoted alumni, Cid Tapia Sr., to cancer. Because of Cid's great desire to succeed as an athlete throughout his life despite his small physical stature, we initiated an award in his honor, the "Little Man" Award.. . All proceeds from fund raising have been used to enhance the development of the Trinidad High School baseball program and to support the youth and high school age baseball traveling teams that were initiated a few years ago. Each year the Alumni Association also awards a $500.00 scholarship to a senior baseball player from Trinidad High.. . The Association, over the years, has been able to assist the THS baseball program by purchasing jackets, underliners, hats, indoor batting cage and other baseball equipment.. . This year will mark the twentieth consecutive year for the Trinidad Miners Baseball Alumni Classic. In 2001 the Trinidad Miners Baseball Alumni Association was able to accomplish and exceed their goal of purchasing a new scoreboard for Central Park. The scoreboard is a substantial improvement and measures 60 feet long by 26 feet high. We believe that no community in the state has a better scoreboard.. . To fund the purchase the 'Association' sold advertisements on the scoreboard and was able to raise $42,000. The cost of the scoreboard with installation cost came to $38,000. Since we had excess funds, a sound system for the park was purchased, flagpoles for the United States and State of Colorado flags were installed and a new press box was built. Displayed outside the press box are the engraved bricks purchased by players and family members.. . In 2013, the Association again sold advertising space on the scoreboard for new projects at Central Park. One of the ideas we are working on is to use the new advertising money to go along with a grant the City of Trinidad is applying for and in kind donations from TSJC to install an artificial grass infield that would require much less maintenance. Other ideas for improving Central Park are to improve the outfield sprinkling system, level and smooth the outfield grass, improve the lighting and dugouts, put bathrooms near the concession stand and build new and better storage facilities for the high school and college. We are also working with the City and TSJC to possibly install showers and restrooms facilities in the hitting clubhouse.. . We last would like to thank the many members of the alumni association, their families, and the other community members who have donated their personal time to make the above mentioned a reality. Without the efforts of these individuals we would not have been able to accomplish the many things we do or to continue the "Classic" and its tradition.
