I have built a portable soil desorption unit that has the ability to process/clean 2 cubic tonnes of contaminated wastes per hour, with an end result that is completely clear of any hydrocarbons. . What is Thermal Desorption:. Thermal Desorption is an environmental remediation technology that utilizes heat to increase volatility of contaminants such that they can be removed.. Explanation:. Thermal Desorption is not incineration. Volatilized contaminants are then either collected or thermally destroyed, it there fore has two major components; the desorber itself and the off gas treatment centre.. What Does it Do:. Thermal Desorption systems are designed to remove organic compounds from solid matrices such as soils, sludge and filter cakes without thermally destroying. It is a seperation technology, not a destruction technology. Since it is a thermal process, there is a common belief that temperature is the only parameter to measure. While it is true that better removal technologies are usually achieved at higher temperatures, other factors must be considered. Since the process is goverened by mass transfer, heating time and the amount of mixing are also key parameters in optimizing removal efficiency. Thermal Desorption had successfully been used for just about EVERY organic compound found to date. It has also been used to removed mercury, thermal desorption can not be used to remove heavy metals. However: stabilizing agents can be added to the feed soil or the treated soil durring the rewetting step to decrease the leachability of most metals.
