Detailed description is The UGA Ballet Ensemble is a pre-professional performance company based on the traditional classical ballet idiom and exploration of the contemporary ballet genre, housed in the University of Georgia Department of Dance.
The UGA Ballet Ensemble, founded in 1993 by Artistic Director Joan Buttram, presents programming to local, regional, national and international audiences.
Performing in a variety of balletic styles, the ensemble performs on annual spring productions at UGA as well as on tour, presenting works on the annual BalletFest concert in Atlanta, GA and the Georgia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (GAHPERD) Dance Kaleidoscope concerts as well as the Regional and National AAHPERD conference concerts.
Additionally, Ballet Ensemble works have been presented to the CORPS de Ballet International, Inc.
conferences, the International Cortpo de Ballo Festival Tour in Southern Italy, The Classic Center in Athens, GA and in house at the UGA Performing Arts Center.
Choreographic awards achieved by the UGA Ballet Ensemble include the International Barcelona Dance Festival 2nd (2007), National Endowment for the Art’s National College Choreography Initiative for choreographer Stanley Zompakos (2003), the National American College Dance Festival performance in Washington, D.C.
(1996), The Atlanta Project (1994) and the UGA Lilly Fellows Program (1994).
The UGA Ballet Ensemble has produced the full length classical works La Bayadere, Giselle, La Sylphide, Les Sylphides, Paquita, Le Grand Pas de Quatre, The Nutcracker Suite and Firebird.
Guest choreographers who have staged works on the ensemble include Marcus Bugler, Virginia Carver, Mollisa Fenley, Charles Flachs, Lisa Fusillo, Leslie Hodges, Er Dong Hu, Andrew Kuharsky, Waverly Lucas, Tom Morris, Marjorie Mussman, Cynthia Pratt, Janet G.
Robertson, Dean Williams and Stanley Zompakos.
UGA Ballet Ensemble members are student dancers pursuing a major or minor degree in the Department of Dance and aim for excellence in both their academic pursuits and their studies in dance.
