Mostly I had been trying to work on a lathe and when I went to college I got into woodcarving. Woodcarving worked for me because I loved doing woodwork, but needed something I could do in a small space. Woodcarving provided that very requirement. . . After graduation I became an archaeologist. Carving continues to work for me because archaeologists are constantly traveling all over and staying in hotels or campgrounds. I generally bring a small tarp and carve right in the room. I'm sure the cleaning staff appreciates it more that way. In a campground I'll use the shavings i can gather to cook with and charge my phone one of those biolite stoves.. . My favorite material to work with has to be cottonwood bark. It is a very soft wood taken from dead trees. Each piece has a unique shape to it that tells you what to carve in it. After practice you begin to see natural lines and cracks in it that help you shape the piece you are working on. This way no two pieces will ever be identical. I have recently begun to experiment with painting them after I carve them, thus adding a whole new dimension to the carving itself.. . I also enjoy carving cypress knees. I was in a woodworking club while in college and a guy gave me one to try carving just to see how I liked it. The shape I naturally saw in it kinda looked like how a Santa Claus would look so that's what I made. Cypress knees are great to carve because there is almost no grain in the wood, a problem to be worked around in other types of wood. They're fun to make and people really seem to enjoy having them in their homes.. . People ask all the time how long it takes to make my carvings and that is a difficult question to answer. I usually work on about 3-8 pieces at a time. I call them "batches". This helps give a change of pace from constantly focusing on only one piece and can help provided inspiration for a different piece in a way that maybe you hadn't thought of. I may finish a piece in a few days or it may be on the table for a month or two. I generally try to keep pieces together in similar stages. I can say that it takes at least 2 days for the gnome home finish to be completed. The Santa's can vary from 2-4 days, depending on how many coats of paint it needs. Its usually 2 days with the antiquing included, but sometimes more still needs to be done.
