A teacher to generations of journalists honoured

Jim Tully has been recognised in the New Year Honours.
Fifty years and two retirements later, Jim Tully’s years as a journalist and an educator are being honoured with a New Zealand Order of Merit.
His career began at the Auckland Star in 1969, a graduate of the inaugural year of Canterbury University’s journalism programme, which he would later head for 25 years, from 1987.
He and wife Liz moved to Wellington after his retirement in 2012, but a call from Massey University changed his path again, and a role as a guest lecturer swiftly morphed into an associate professor role at the heart of the journalism programme.
