New Yorker writer Bill Barich is best known for his horse racing book
Laughing in the Hills, published 25 years ago now. For his latest book, Barich has again written about horses, but this time added Ireland as a topic as well in
A Fine Place to Daydream: Racehorses, Romance and the Irish. Barich fell in love, moved to Dublin and took quickly to the Irish love for the race track. As Barich explores Ireland, he also meets top trainers, horses and jockeys.
A Fine Place to Daydream builds up to the English Cheltenham Festival in March when Irish and British patriotism do battle on the track. Along the way, Barich paints a humorous picture of Ireland that will appeal to racing fans and non-fans alike. ($23 / 228 pages / Knopf) ....

Sir Mason Durie among Massey's New Year Honours recipients

Professor Emeritus Sir Mason Durie (Rangitāne, Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Raukawa Te Au ki te Tonga) (KNZM) – is among several Massey luminaries to be recognised in the 2021 New Year Honours list. Sir Mason has been made a member of the Order of New Zealand (ONZ) in recognition of his service to New Zealand.
And former Massey staff member Professor Angie Farrow was recognised for her services to theatre, while Adjunct Associate Professor Jim Tully was honoured for his services to journalism education. ....

Two Wellingtonians have become Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit in today’s New Year Honours List:
Sue Chetwin, for services to consumer rights.
Having begun her career in journalism, Ms Chetwin was editor of the Sunday News from 1994 to 1998, the Sunday Star-Times from 1998 to 2003, and founding editor of the Herald on Sunday from 2003 to 2005. As Chief Executive of Consumer New Zealand from 2007 to 2020 she successfully campaigned for many important consumer law reforms, including prohibitions on unfair contract terms, fairness in consumer credit contracts, country of origin labelling, and controlling door knockers. She has led other successful campaigns on behalf of consumers including calling for mandatory standards for sunscreens, helping to regulate mobile truck shops, and calling out businesses on misleading claims such as greenwashing. Her commitment to consumer rights have contributed to New Zealand having a strong consumer prot ....

A teacher to generations of journalists honoured


Jim Tully has been recognised in the New Year Honours.
Fifty years and two retirements later, Jim Tully’s years as a journalist and an educator are being honoured with a New Zealand Order of Merit.
His career began at the Auckland Star in 1969, a graduate of the inaugural year of Canterbury University’s journalism programme, which he would later head for 25 years, from 1987.
He and wife Liz moved to Wellington after his retirement in 2012, but a call from Massey University changed his path again, and a role as a guest lecturer swiftly morphed into an associate professor role at the heart of the journalism programme. ....
