Theyre quite gleeful and happy that he has passed from the scene of course the mistake here is thinking that you know Mohamed Morsi embodies the entire Muslim Brotherhood movement. Unaware that it does represent the Muslim Brotherhood movement in egypt does represent a significant you know portion of the of the population in egypt and its not going to go away just because Mohamed Morsi has passed i dont see just i dont think that were the democrats or i dont think more broadly public intellectuals in the United States who have a deep i think anti. Muslim specifically anti political islamist orientation are going to issue any statements of condemnation i mean there is you know i think an argument to be made that indirectly the west the United States and europe who have been openly embracing the neo fascist regime of l. C. C. Are complicit in the demise and the death of Mohamed Morsi i mean since the coup in 2013 the west the United States europe have openly embraced general Abdel Fattah Elsisi under the bogus argument that he is a source of stability in egypt in the broader middle east when the truth is the exact opposite hes actually in the incubator of deep seated instability in the region and so the point here is simply that you know the United States and i think many european western liberal governments are indirectly sort of involved in the circumstances that led to the death of mohamed. By virtue of their ship for general sisi and what about regionally here i mean weve heard reaction from the turkish president who says that morsi has died as a martyr after 6 years of detention what to impact do you see this having regionally on the current rage on regional tensions the u. A. E. And saudi arabia on one side and you know the turks and qatar and others on the other what do you think this will mean well i think it will deepen the tensions between the. Turkish qatari sort of alliance backed by various supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood movement throughout the middle east and then the other side the saudis immoralities and and and you know the Egyptian Military will i think silently perhaps openly celebrate the demise of Mohamed Morsi so i think in the coming days and weeks when the funeral takes place and when there are going to be you know public discussions and debates over this issue it will harden positions will deeply you know expand the feature in the chasm that exist regionally between the countries that i just mentioned yes stay with us were getting more reactions now obviously to to this news of Mohammed Morsi is death reaction here from sally a whitson who is executive director for middle east and north africa rights watch she tweeted egypts news says the only democratically elected president morsi has died in prison after this is terrible but entirely predictable given the governments failure to allow him adequate medical care much less family visits Human Rights Watch was just finalizing a report on haith on his health she says so obviously a lot of people are going to be pointing the finger of blame at the gyptian government. What do you think their response is going to be to this. Well the gypsy governments going to deny any responsibility but i think Sarah Leah Whitson of Human Rights Watch is bang on point that there needs to be an International Inquiry over the circumstances that led to the death of Mohamed Morsi if any of the pronouncements from western governments with respect to human rights accountability the rule of law matter and they should be pressing at this moment for a full independent inquiry into the death of Mohamed Morsy egypts 1st democratically elected president i think that would be a real test of integrity but whats country do you see leading that effort well hopefully some European Countries germany canada possibly you know countries that claim to stand up for the rule of law for due process for you know access to legal representation those countries that claim to embody liberal values those would be the countries would be looking for certainly not the United States under donald trump who continually praises the policies of the egyptian dictator and certainly not from some you know other European Countries that elected right wing neo fascist governments but im im you know members of the European Union would expect the European Union you know Foreign Policy adviser to sort of make a statement on these on these questions i think that again would be a real test of the integrity of the values that these countries claim to stand for. We are expecting a statement another shiny from major sponsor here a general on the details surrounding monica morsels death though we dont have time for that one but do you think this in the media its this is going to have any impact on egypt and you know big life in egypt. Well i think its going to just its going to its going to radicalize supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and supporters of political islam and its going to i think confirm an argument that supporters of radical islamist extremism isis have been making since 2013 when Mohamed Morsi was toppled and the argument of radical as islamists has been the ballot box doesnt work that peaceful political change doesnt work witness what happened to the Muslim Brotherhood witness what happened to Mohamed Morsi so that argument is going to be much more convincing against the backdrop of the deep repression weve seen in egypt of the lax 6 years and specifically against the backdrop of the you know the death of Mohamed Morsi who has died under very suspicious circumstances and i think thats going to be the consequence this is not and i think what happened what were seeing here is confirmation once again that the policies of authoritarian repressive despotic regimes in the arab world of which general elsisi his regime is probably the worst do not promote policies that lead to stability and prosperity that in caulked take and they produce at a very fundamental level radical extremism and thats what were going to be seeing in egypt in the coming weeks and months thank you so much for speaking to us now there has shown me end brain a reaction there to news of Mohammed Morsi is that. Watching aljazeera and breaking news continuing coverage of the death of egypts 1st elected democratically elected president wanted morsy who according to Egyptian State television died today during a Court Session he said to fainted and then was later pronounced dead where expecting a statement from the state prosecutor in egypt on the exact circumstances of Mohammed Morsy death and well bring that to you live when it happens here is your birdman me now on more with more on Mohammed Morsi. Mohamed morsi sailed into the presidency if egypt with the winds of the peoples revolution demanding change. In 2012 he became egypts 1st democratically elected president and the 1st civilian to hold office. Morsi was born in 1951 he spent his adult life 1st as an engineering professor then as a member of parliament on a political prisoner. The egyptian revolution in 2011 set the stage for morsi to reach the pinnacle of power. A year after egyptians overthrew longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak morsi took the oath of office to replace him. From the start secular egyptians were suspicious that morsi is really the agents who continue to be with the Muslim Brotherhood exoo never learn. I swear to god i will protect this republics democracy and i will protect the constitution and rule of law and i will safeguard the interests of the egyptian people and the safety and sovereignty of egypt. Morsi promised to be a president for all egyptians instead critics say he tried to consolidate his power by giving himself authority above the judiciary and dominating the government with Muslim Brotherhood members. Morsi is opposition refused to be silenced in june 2013 in scenes reminiscent of the revolution millions of egyptians fill to the square calling for the president to step down morsi refused and often National Reconciliation days later the army to post have ending egypts historic but brief experiment with democracy. And i thought. I would like to pay my respects to our martyrs and those who were injured in our revolution if it wasnt for their blood we would not have this revolution and we would not have home. Stripped of the title of president morsi swiftly became a political prisoner once again he was ultimately tried and sentenced to death for allegedly working with Foreign Armed groups and plotting a mass jailbreak point guards were killed to the end morsi was defiant rejecting the Courts Authority and insisting he was the it just meant president of egypt elected by the people. Former president Mahmoud Morsi has died this monday according to Egyptian State television during a Court Session in cairo he is said to have fainted and was later pronounced dead morsy was egypts 1st democratically elected president he was ousted in july of 2013 by the military led by egypts current president abdel fattah r. C. C. Lets bring in our jazeera is jamal who has covered egypt extensively was on the ground in fact when wanted morsi was ousted before we talk about the impact and the reaction in egypt and regionally. Lets talk about what may have happened here 1st were expecting of course a statement from the state prosecutor in egypt on the 2nd stances of wanting more since death but they had been various reports over the years that he had been mistreated in jail that had been tortured what do you think the Egyptian Government is going to say about his death and the 2nd stance is its a very good question i think weve got to start with what we know and what we know in fact is very little because since the military coup that ousted Mohamad Morsi his whereabouts from the very beginning were kept secretive initially was incommunicado for several days it was only after intense International Pressure from the time the European Union from policy chief Catherine Ashton and others wanted to know where he was that it was then. Transpired that 1st he was being kept in the Republican Guards building and then later he was flown to a military compound north of the country but more recently or ever since he was then tried to put on trial for you compared how his trial went with how the trial of former president mubarak about a quince right so Hosni Mubarak was live on t. V. He was rolled in to the point where these soldiers and officers from the police and other Security Forces who were present guarding the courthouse would actually salute him even though he was meant to be somebody who was charged with murder embezzlement and so forth whereas Mohamed Morsi is trial was on t. V. He was put in a glass soundproof cage he wasnt allowed to see his lawyers one on one so the basic. Tenants of human rights or any particular freedom of speech and expression and so forth were pretty were withheld from him he wasnt allowed to sit with his lawyers he wasnt allowed family visits his family repeatedly or more than one occasion complained that aside from the solitary confinement and Everything Else that he wasnt being given the medical treatment he deserved therefore those are the facts that we know whatever the states decide. Tell us afterwards has to be taken in that context the context that he wasnt given access to the press that the press werent given access to him there was no one on one meeting with his lawyers and therefore thats taken with a pinch of salt and this is where actually language is going to be very crucial at least from a legal standpoint do you describe what happened as a natural death or would it be death in custody as a result of mistreatment which essentially would either be manslaughter or. Intentional killing and this is where there will be a discussion amongst Human Rights Organizations and others and some journalists and human rights activists are in fact tweeting now that you know the families of inmates that were locked up with morsi had reported that he was routinely denied medical treatment and that families his family wasnt allowed to deliver him met the medicine that he needed to be treated so itll be interesting to see as you say what the egyptian Authorities Say about the circumstances of his death now coming back to the charges against him media egyptian media saying right now that he can last at the conclusion of a trial session in an espionage lawsuit there were several charges against him remind us what he was being accused of precisely by the Egyptian Government i mean with or without his im too funny he was accused of anything and everything but the Egyptian Government or current government wanted to show he was accused of espionage with foreign governments both with israel but also with hamas and others he was accused of killing protesters. In protests that took place that actually had his supporters. In them and then he was accused of other things in terms of Financial Issues as well but the main case that was ongoing was the. Case that was taking place and in its again the issue with these court cases and this was even from those who were to morsi campaigners would always point to the fact that the fact that there was limited duress or or if any in that case that. Morsi was never allowed to sit one on one with his lawyer that he wasnt allowed to submit certain evidence that these cases for example fully had Mohamed Morsi not died and if were to take the state t. V. s narrative as fact how do you not died in the socalled hearing today we wouldnt have heard that there was a hearing today yet we didnt know there was a hearing and this is something thats also very significant how can these trials take place from a journalistic perspective but also sure the Human Rights Organization will be talking but from our perspective its difficult to assess the news narrative thats comes from them if we dont have access to them as journalists not just as i guess in the case of mubarak we would be aware of the trial of the sessions in court have nobody allowed him to go youd be on everything just and youd be speaker i mean we i remember interviewing for mubaraks lawyer more than one occasion standing outside the courthouse which was set up in the Police Academy in on the outskirts and suburbs of cairo where we would interview both mubarak supporters and opponents but you try and find the most your supporters standing outside the courthouse you would end up being in that courthouse the next day being charged with triggers all of us as always as ever in arrested or you know somewhat silent so what impacts do you think his death is going to have on events in egypt today in the short term and long term that its i mean the government or the officials there will definitely cya relief in the sense that it for them it takes away one of the symbols of. Movement and essentially hears even those who are pro. Anti Muslim Brotherhood anti morsi morsi was still a symbol of the general term 5th revolution in the sense that he was the only dark articulated civilian president and those democratic. Democratic elections wouldnt have taken place worth not for the journey 25th of them so that symbol has gone the question is is that a benefit. Its true the coup and the anti revolution forces or actually will it be a curse on them in the sense that a lot of analysts would say the program illusion forces and the most organized amongst them was the Muslim Brotherhood were actually crippled and crippled themselves by their constant attachment to morsi as a figure and their constant insistence on his return as president do they now think outside the box and maybe find a new reality a new something to radicalism troll revolution forces those people who were demonstrating against barack a year later also demonstrating a large margin to moderate a large client and so it wasnt just the military that was behind is down for all right the interesting thing for actually even though and then those who are supporters who demonstrated against him and actually demonstrated in favor of sisi there is a large amount of them who then now are calling for anti sisi protests themselves i mean thats the nature of politics you have these High Expectations you want to see something the those in office dont deliver you protest against it and so forth and Shifting Sands its only natural but the question is what impact would his death have right it really does youre talking about him mainly as a figure to the Muslim Brotherhood or a Muslim Brotherhood has been in disarray it has been weakened because its top echelon not just flatly but how powerful influential a figure was the within the Muslim Brotherhood he was in the main man of the Muslim Brotherhood was he he was the most significant symbol of the Muslim Brotherhood because of his incarceration and because of his refusal to submit to the demands of other fatah sisi for the crew to take place i did a documentary which a few months ago called the final hours and it looked into the last week of his presidency and based on the aides that were around him and eyewitness testimonies and so forth and this these were stories that were then shared amongst the Political Prisoners in their prisons in jail cells in egypt and so forth. He he had a personal conviction which he said clearly in his last address on t. V. But also to c. C. And others that his life was worth sacrificing if it meant as far as he was concerned in his own conviction if it meant saving the revolution that india and him. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of his own supporters prayed in the Muslim Brotherhood and thats maybe what propelled him above the guy general who is traditionally the most significant person in the Muslim Brotherhood his popularity would surpass that of muhammad but the very easily. Weve had reaction from the turkish president who described morsi as a martyr saying that he died as a martyr while in detention is that how his supporters people who have still supported him to this day will see him you think for sure i mean already on the line the hash tag is the 100 morsi the martyrdom of Mohamed Morsi is being used by those not just the Muslim Brotherhood supporters there are you know famous writers well can deal and others who are seen as liberal nationalists who were never considered to be islamists who find in the death of Mohamed Morsi something to grieve and something to be sorry about again like i said there is it depends how you look at this folly and everyone will be looking at it based on their own priorities lets say right so there are those who are ideologically aligned with him in terms of the islamist political islam supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood who will have a certain amount of sorrow and grief and anger there are those who would look at him as a symbol of the general 25th revolution and of that short lived 12 months of democracy who will be upset because the symbol has gone there are those who look from a humanitarian perspective they may not necessarily agree with him but would see that his incarceration locking him up in a glass cage not giving him medical treatment not allowing for his family visits him that that goes against the principles of human rights and freedom and so for. And therefore will be angered but then there were those who believe that he was a traitor who believe that he was. Anti egyptian as the army and c. Z. Has tried to build him and could very well rejoice i mean those are the same people who joist folly when all you know hundreds of people were massacred about square massacre so its not difficult to see that there will be a spectrum but i would say its safe to say that a large not you know a significant amount of the egyptian public and the arab world as well as maybe even parts of the muslim world because he his popularity did spread to turkey in the news or Malaysian Air force that would let me ask you a bit more about the Muslim Brotherhood its outlawed in egypt of course there was talk in washington the simply of actually labeling it as a terrorist organization where does the Muslim Brotherhood stand today this movement its leader was the 1st democratically elected president of egypt in 2012 how we can visit today as a movement not just in egypt but around the region so i mean theres a theres a. And i mean i reports of the many Muslim Brotherhood related stories over the years theres an inclination to view the egyptian Muslim Brotherhood as the one that controls this global movements and so forth the reality isnt anywhere near that so the Muslim Brotherhood for example in countries like. Malaysia or pakistan. Have nothing to do with the Muslim Brotherhood in egypt in terms of their operations and so forth and therefore we should be judging the Muslim Brotherhood in egypt based on morses death or not necessarily globally because that global. Operation that many like to dress up or paint isnt really a reality in terms of egypt its top sort of leadership where either wiped out put it behind bars or in exile so prior to the death of hamad morsi which was extremely weak weak to the point that if its wanted to to morrow mobilize lets say even i would say for. 50 percent of what it was able to mobilize in 2010 between 20020138 probably wouldnt be able so if morsi supporters wanted to come out on the streets of egypt today or tomorrow they wouldnt be able to they wouldnt come out in the numbers that people were used to seeing the Muslim Brotherhood i mean. Every i mean covering egypt between 2010 or even prior to 2010 the only organization that could bring up masses and by masses youre from egypt a country of 100000000 people right so significant masses the only organization that could do that on short notice historically has always been the muslim brother or at least in the past 2030 years nowadays thats going to be very difficult but here is where they are at a crossroads do they make from the death or march of them as they will be billing it of Mohamed Morsi an opportunity to relaunch themselves and find a new narrative something that they can now unites themselves around and rebuild and also gain sympathy from those who are powerful to them but dont necessarily agree with them so those who are anti dictatorship anti military rule pro democracy and so forth or do they continue what theyve been doing over the past 2 or 3 years and many of their critics have been leveling against them live in this kind of parallel universe where they assume that just rhetoric and slogans is going to be enough to galvanize people and when reality is economically speaking socially speaking theres a lot more that needs to be delivered to the egyptian people for them to start thinking about their freedom once again more than these slogans stay with us were going to get more reaction now to news of a lot of morses death then speak to Mohamed El Masri who is associate professor of media and Cultural Studies at the door and stood for graduate studies his rise kite from minneapolis in the United States thank you very much for being with us. Your 1st start your initial reaction to news of wanted morses death unclear under what circumstances yet but what do you make of whats happened. I think its i think its expected and this is the outcome that the Egyptian Government intends wanted for years for morsi and also of course other brotherhood leaders like mine or dia im quite official they dont want necessarily to execute people because of the fallout that the executions would create but they want to kill them slowly or morsi had been denied medical treatment essential medical treatment for his diabetes and other conditions he had been his eyes deny visitors. From lawyers and doctors and family. It was gross medical negligence he had fainted on multiple occasions Human Rights Watch documented that he had experienced that diabetic coma on at least one occasion he was spent very little and is still in water the food and water that he was given were often contaminated and so this was the expected outcome and i think its the the outcome that the gyptian government has wanted for years so i think in some ways you could consider it as a kind of murder. In 2018 a panel of british m. P. s had reported indeed that he was being kept in solitary confinement that he was you know what was happening to him could have been classified as torture and could have also and led to his payment choi death so there was a warning. Do you think theres likely to be at investigation an independent investigation into him to his death or is this just going to go away. The gyptian government is going to deny responsibility as theyve done for 6 years theyre going to say that he died because he was an old man he was being given the best medical care or they were already released statements in the past to that effect so we certainly cant expect the Egyptian Government to launch any kind of Serious Investigation that you can government killed a 1000 protesters in a single day in broad daylight in 2013 and they havent prosecuted a Single Person they havent launched an investment investigation so briefly do you think this is going to have an effect an impact on events in egypt today now remains to be seen i mean the Muslim Brotherhood is quite popular i think its important to keep in mind that Mohamed Morsi himself was quite popular even after the military cute his Approval Rating according to the scientific polls that were done by pew and the Research Associates has his Approval Rating was on par with c. C. And that was back at the end of 2013 with him in jail and being accused of espionage and other things so you know but you know the variable here the thing that has changed in egypt is that theres a lot more fear than there was in 2011 in 2012 the Egyptian Military and police have killed protesters theyve arrested 60000 people and so will this generate will this be enough to generate a kind of mobilization thats what remains to be seen and i thank you for speaking to us today and mastery i have from minneapolis i thank you very much for your time. 1700 hours g. M. T. If youre just joining us on aljazeera continuing coverage of our breaking news story out of egypt where former president wanted morsi has died.
