Elections both republicans and democrats democrats have set the sights and securing the intriguing Diverse Community Indian Americans hes being. Senator comolli harris will be the 1st person of the indian narrative to be nominated for Vice President on a Major Party Ticket grandparents were phenomenal we would go back to india like every other year my grandfather fought for and was a defender of the freedom of india when i was a young girl and being the eldest grandchild my grandfather would take me on his morning walk all of his buddies who also were great leaders and they would talk about the importance of fighting for democracy and the importance of fighting for civil rights and that people would be treated equally regardless of where they were born on the circumstances of their birth and watts along the beach in india really planted something in my mind and created a commitment in me before i even realized it has led me to where i am today. Getting out the energy to mary. If you would like to be in this conversation a political pundit on you tube. You can absolutely do it jumping to the Comment Section which ring youll come to see into the street. And i guess welcome to the stream i will say hello to you you will introduce yourself to our International Audience welcome to the stream go ahead do your own introduction hey everybody thank you so much for having me 1st of all im really excited to be here my name is ari i currently in michigan traveling throughout the United States working job in politics mostly for the last 10 years used to work at the Republican National Committee Headquarters through the sewer. Welcome to the stream its great to have you on the street and tell everybody who you are and what you do hey everybody have 3 other wonderful to be here my name a send up of the van and i am the National Advocacy executive of the Indian American Muslim Council and we through where we we engage on civic and democratic issues at the Grassroots Level and i work as a u. N. Consultant and educator Emergency Education really. Great nice to happen thank you so much and sima welcome to our conversation tell everybody. Hi everyone im a journalist based in washington d. C. Av cover of us india relations for the last 25 all of the year as i am a columnist for the Economic Times see why in the United States the Indian American vote so important stace yet. Mainly because in the battleground states they could be decisive. And there are 1200000 in american waters in about 9 battleground states and we north from 2016 that the democrats lost by a few 1000 votes in. At least 3 of those states so both parties are making a pitch for the Indian American vote and as the cliche goes. Every vote counts and this time especially so. R. D. I was watching you watch the republican part of the cain trump a admonish up and you were beaming us smiling that im a stage from a rally there you you could have been happier why is it do you think that republicans in particular is true an administration that they generally d seem to have a great relationship with. Because the relationship is genuine and ive seen this many times many president s in the past they have done some work with the in the meaning that the Community Nothing like doll nothing like that has ever been seen before for him to go and do this rally he did d in Houston Texas Prime Minister modi walk around Holding Hands with 50000 mean americans people from all over the country it was a monumental moment in history i mean it was just anybody that i spoke to they stopped it watched their television anybody in the community i should say and then he went to india and a visitor they went to on the and there was over 100000 people in a stadium where the people very much welcomed him and appreciated d him and so i mean i think there are so many other things i can talk about which i guess what will or will talk about today but its just so so you assume that its i mean yes i do want to just lets the strategy then 0 in just saying is a genuine relationship genuine friendship how does that tending to votes in the us whats the strategy there are a lot of people in the Indian American community there are still very connected to their own communities back and. My parents including my family including my grandmother still lives and so we do visit we Pay Attention we think about the politics back home and i think that people really do care about d that relationship and what its been a means to them and thats why people really Pay Attention and also off of those that do support by mr modi which by the way very popular Prime Minister about elected for a 2nd term in a very very large way with a majority of the vote in a parliamentary system with no Coalition Government very popular so for him to step up and basically endorse the president of the United States on a main stage people that Pay Attention to him are going to Pay Attention president more. So whats your analysis of the situation the democrats are in the Indian Americans are publicans of wearing Indian Americans. That its yeah i think its complicated complicated and a lot of that has to do with. Just evaluating each candidate for who they are and what they bring to the table and where they are in terms of. Their position on different issues. Certainly at the National Level i see that theres a very diverse understanding of how people view this mo the trump relationship of course you know the Indian Diaspora in the United States is not a monolith it is just as diverse as india itself and so that is incredibly important and are standing where the Indian American vote will be and this i think you know we were just talking about that how the more the celebration where there is essentially massive celebration of a genocidal killer. You know in Houston Texas so. This is not in tune with the ideas of the Indian Constitution or the u. S. Constitution so i really question you know what is driving that sort of that zeal and that its something to be to be vigilant of the sort of ideology that is is driving that but again you know i think you know we have this extraordinary moment in history where we have a Vice President ial candidate that is of Indian American background and. So that is really just its just an exciting moment in our history in this country and also just that the complexity of her world view that she brings to the table and to leadership i think thats something a lot of Indian Americans especially the 2nd generation can really connect with. To take a pause because in the recent you had 2 weeks in the United States there was a Democratic Convention then it was a Republican Convention both conventions have very high profile politicians with Indian Heritage lets do a mash up so you can see both of their approaches to perhaps increasing their Indian American voters and. My mother instilled in my sister maya and me the values that we chart the course of our lives she raised us to be proud as strong black women and she raised us to know and be proud of our Indian Heritage. I am the proud daughter of indian immigrants they came to america and settled in a small southern town my father wore turban my mother wore sorry. I was a brown girl and a black and white world we faced discrimination and hardship but my parents never gave in to grievance and hate my mom built a successful business my dad taught 30 years at a historically black college. Senior who did it better. I dont think i want to get into that a but i make a few points are gay having. Come now harriss talk more about you know her African Heritage until she made a bed for the presidency herself then she started to embrace in an American Heritage in a little bit more and now she talks more and more about it mixed heritage is a complex thing and you know its neither good nor bad she is a politician nikki haley became a christian wrenching married then but she grew up as a sikh girt of indian immigrants in a small town so i think both did well both they embraced thing their heritage because today america is more accepting of you know biracial people its as simple as that 10 years ago all. Right have been more difficult. I j i want to put this to you its a little comment through the night we spent seem a little bit earlier and the basic premise behind this is that because Indian Americans often felt democratic it doesnt necessarily mean that theyre in the back thats havent been a fence and you can come off the back that i would somebody like tom lehrers its essential to negotiate the significance of representation in that office with a troubling career as a prosecutor. You know her refusal to prosecute one west bank while instead targeting the mothers and true in children these all raise questions of abuse and privilege that i think are worth asking. Go ahead but what i saw about nikki haley that i liked about the convention that just happened the Republican Convention that just happened this past week is that she really has never not embrace or background thats something to be said shes always talked about it shes very proud of it shes talked about her city parents and the way that her children still go to the good bar with for her parents and so on with various what i would say is that she has this reputation in washington having been in washington shes at a service in washington or just any american which is that in the american fundraiser and then other than that it just depends thats a shock you maybe but thats at best and thats something that i think people really feel in the community thats something that i think ive seem cover station with people my Family Friends so on and so forth very real conversation so i wonder how much that will really translate it from the perspective of what youre saying but now and other things and i do think that the Indian American community being elevated to the level that its at right now is also very except. For or is going out there or the community that im part of is something that i find very exciting everyone see me and sunny. In terms of nikki haley or come on. Yeah i could see your face making movements articulate yeah. Yeah. Yeah i see in nikki haley the only thing that brown that she brings to the table is you know just whats on the exterior i dont see that shes connected to her roots when she made that speech the other day and she just fascinated by what part of her indian identity that she feels authentically engaged with so yeah that was interesting her well. Please go ahead i think its a very rich who you know say that someone embraces that even if we dont know i think right with women have embraced their identity and id i dont think its fair to save that nikki haley didnt earlier she actually has quite a good record as governor and if you remember that she took down the Confederate Flag this is something people dont remember a still or you know as an international of us sitting equal distance from both women i would say that. You know one shouldnt undermine nikki haleys record just because youre a democrat lets go to your each of these very busy right now suit for instance says i take it as they are trying to woo indian vote is at the time when there was a right would straight shed be politics and indians shed like mr trump Indian American vote is a no longer a given for democrats do you take that one. I think israel its very nature president john has done not only the israelis and as we talked about but he celebrated the volley in the oval office he has appointed many Indian American people not only nikki haley to his cabinet but many Indian American people just administration were talking about judges were talking about people in very senior positions a 2 part were talking about so many folks that hes worked with people are very excited to see us very much a brazilian merchant thats something that i hope that continues not only with his d presidency a future president s son that we give you you commit here this is from paul on thanks paul in indian votes the deciding factor in u. S. Pows wow thats a lot of power knowledge you can eat but i think that there is an effect and then americans bring an integral power to this election and its exciting as sima mentioned the there are the critical populations and swing states thats something to really look at but yes i do think there is some of that there at play there but i do think also that there is a kind of in this this time where. Theres a great divide between that sort of the 1st generation of Indian American the 2nd generation of Indian Americans and kind of where we sort of prioritize. You know our Political Engagement what drives us and i see that divide especially in this election yes you know as. Amused by nikki haley because you know i i havent seen her engage in some of these issues maybe in the way that i had hoped that she would. But. I think that divide is really also is much more pertinent now than its ever been historically and we designed a lot of americans yeah he said the generational divide can you just some the opening sentence and the Younger Generation think like this the older generation what is that like new can you explain yeah i think that the Younger Generation the 2nd generation i should say and as were coming of age i think that our priorities are what are the issues that really matter to all americans here and some of those issues are and its a much more progressive sort of political framework theres you know medicare for all access to Higher Education all of that. Those are issues that we care about and we dont see that obviously there public and party prioritizing those issues and we see the Indian American 1st generation much more. Ideologically aligned with this trump moley relationship even though that is not how Indian Americans have generally voted but. There is a this and its really important to note that there is you know what most of the bringing to the Indian American sort of. Vote is this century on this very right wing hindu ideology of him and and how that is impacting us elections. So Phinney Toomas is watching on each even for the us a little while ago how how many events are at stake here the begins in democrats were in the Indian American vote somewhere between 1. 2 and 1500000 Indian American votes are out there by the republicans all democrats to try and grab but typically Indian Americans vote democrat so if you listen to some that we spoke to. Corruption has become. Prevalent in everyday life in the u. S. Under the Current Administration and people push back with this choice black lives matter is. Bracing in a similar track where politicians are using. Systemic racism to do it much like the. Corrupt caste system that the politicians many are used to abuse. Its political power or too often eat americans are held up as a model minority but we know this is a tactic used by people of color and. Im excited that we have come on as our Vice President ial candidate its a game changer you see someone of mixed race and of Indian Heritage on the ticket but we must remember that simply electing a person color doesnt mean the work is done right as a fellow happened in one and im especially excited about those nomination she represents what this country really looks like were a diverse country but sometimes weaponize our diversity hes denigrated American Veterans muslims mexicans the disabled the less goes on and. We see something on my laptop guess in particular for to see that. Both both parties are up paying that their Indian American consulate this is outcome of the horizon and his and her mother back in 2007 chatting her Indian Heritage biden Harris County paying have an agenda for the Indian American community they sing this is what were going to do for you Indian Americans if you vote for us and then theres this friendship between modi and President Trump when it comes to deep issues seamer what do you think will be the defining deciding factor on which way these 1200000 voters may well lead to. Ok so the older generation. Still has a deep connection with india and they feel that President Trump respects india thats the word they use very often when i talk to them and it cannot be denied that under trump in the administration certain things were done that the democrats were unwilling to do for example selling india weapons that he wanted armed drones quite some do better sort of monitor the borders in america time domain thats one thing and generally the Trump Administration has been out there vocally on the china issue and india and china having a serious border situation jainas occupying a quite a bit of the territory its on the indian side of the line of control these things. With all american or all the Indian Americans and these are important issues that even the democrats have to reckon with this china as a competitor you know more and more and their relationship with india no matter whether its more the or some other indian Prime Minister the relationship with india is earl very important if the u. S. Is to take china on because india is a large country is the only large country in asia that can be a u. S. Partner and its a democracy. So you know just very briefly have you seen anything quite like this before you youve been reporting and writing and and doing journalism in the u. S. For some time now have you ever seen the 2 major parties woo the Indian American community quite like this no never this is the 1st time because firstly the community has comment into its own shall we say more people have registered to vote many minima at americas history not read disturb a didnt become so dozens they were living here on green cards so theres been an upsurge in all of. The biking in the warning as i said before because of the battleground states and thats where this election will be won or lost and until now the democrats never used a war they know and americans have dollars the 1st time they actually had a program where they paraded there you know. That that engender im going to leave it there thank you so much we could keep talking about it in a rocking community in the us its such a novelty to be out to do that its so nice to have all of you here in this conversation thank you son i thank you seem thank you very much political pundits on you tube when you are still going to say this thank you very much we appreciate your your feedback and waning and the condescension is just a blank looks out for todays competition of the state of the next and whats in the way.
