Theres all the headlines and these continues here on, ill just, theyre off to the bottom line. Stay with us. The hi, im Steve Clements and i have a question. So many politicians want to be the Republican Partys candidate for president next year. But to any stand, a chance against donald trump, lets get to the bottom line. The at last count, there were more than a dozen republican politicians competing for their parties, nomination to run for president next year. Some will fall off the map this month even before their 1st public debate on august 23rd and others like Florida GovernorRhonda Santas have im asked a huge war chest and are expected to do get out for months. The. What can any one of them on seat, the reigning king of the Republican Party, donald trump, despite his mounting legal problems, hes still way ahead in fundraising and popularity. So does he really have any challenges today were talking with julia, manchester, who covers National Politics and political campaigns as a reporter for the hill. And david weigel, who covers politics for center for were in full disclosure. I also work. Thank you both for joining us. Let me just start, were going to try to get as many of these candidates as we can. But i want to start for a moment with the i a i or republicans of lincoln dinner last week, were one of the candidates was booed on the stage slip. Lets hear this clip. A donald trump is running to stay out of prison. And if we elect, i know, i know, i know, but if we elect donald trump, we are willingly giving joe biden for more years, and the white house in america can handle that. God bless you and god bless america. Of course that is former representative will heard from texas running for president , and he is, you know, out there making his case julia i have to ask is, is making a criticism of donald trump a death wish when you, when that want to run for the g o p, right . Yeah, it seems like it at this point to considering donald trump is really running far away with the nomination, according to the polls and we have seen other g o p gatherings. There was one um, evangelical christian gathering, held in washington dc. A few months ago where we saw that, you know, Chris Christy was booed for, criticizing donald trump. So i think these events were, you see primary voters, christie is out there doing something. Christ christies out there saying the only way to beat donald trump is to run against donald trump. Right. He did that actually we had a summit for event where he did that very boldly and a lot of the other candidates were not doing it. I havent figured out yet if thats where well heard is, but, but do you use, do you see a path for any of these candidates, or will or others to begin dealing with a g o p base right now . Um thats, thats not taking the criticism very yeah. At this point its really hard to see a path. And i mean thats just shown in the polls. And even when you hear about Donald Trumps legal issues, all of these candidates with the exception of maybe will hurt or chris christie. They dont even want to touch that topic. They dont want to criticize them on that. In a normal world, you would think the other candidates would want to criticize the front runner of a party for having that kind of a conundrum. This close to an election day. What, how do you see it when you heard the booze and, and you know, these candidates intimately in your, on the road with met them. How is it playing with . Whats the vibe that youre getting when youre out on the road when it comes to taking on donald trump . Right, i wasnt both be events where were talking about both these kids are running unusual campaigns. Chris christine will heard, do not have a pass to the nomination. As we see it, if you look at the polling, they are the, the candidates that they know heard at all. They definitely know christie, the can to the largest opposition for republicans. Theyre running to make a point. The down trump shouldnt be the nominee again. But you know, neil connex deal by this accidental speech writer at expression. Elections are not, are not one weeks or one and years. And several years ago there that entire public and Party Apparatus went along with all trout up to a point saying, well, 2020 was such a jump all. And who knows who actually one were not sure. Find one. Were going to wait for the states to figure this out. Were going to wait for the course to figure this out. They created this on this problem where the, the, the most the easiest argument gets dropped would be. This is the only guy in america who lost the presidency, whos running against joe biden. David cant make that argument credibly. The base believes, but the down trump one the last election that everything was better under donald trump, that is under joe biden. Something they have some independence agreeing with for parts of it as the, as the beginning of the economy changes. So theyre, theyre starting a place where theres not a compelling argument not to bring the guy back apart from. He cant serve more than one more term. Does they have just made that argument when he started campaign in iowa and he dropped it because though its a little, i mean, i think it makes sense, but is a little bit obscure for most voters at all these candidates are trying to say, im more electable than somebody who, if youd asked me, you know, in december 2020 was perfectly collectible. And then he deserved to win the presidency again. And thats where all the problem started except for, except for heard and christy, or just on, on these, these one man i guess to me and now truth telling nations less less about one of the presidency been just stopping this guy. A trump remains not just, not just well like that, most republicans around 70 percent of them. But, but were adored by more republicans than you need to win. Combination around 4045 here. Heres the word that adored it. I am not to repeat everything i was saying that they think you on the last election, but they dont have the qualms with donald trump that the, that, that some democrats had with Hillary Clinton, they had worries can. She went again and prove that she could give it to an in 2016 and they also at going back to their cancer saying, and you could make down trump vulnerable on his legal problems. The fact that this chris gets, he says he might be out on on bond and a couple of states by the time are voting. But that was an argument that wasnt made about Hillary Clinton, 2008. But. But let these guys dont believe that the voters believe this is all the rules. Its all the deep skate to, truthfully just right now he said, for a minute. I mean i, i know there are false correlations in yalls. Causality. Julia, yeah. But if you actually go track it and you watch the indictments, Donald Trumps popularity has gone up with indictments. If i were running, i mean the question is, should mike pence go get arrested for something . Right, right. Well no, i dont think it would work for mike pence because donald, from his donald trump. I mean, hes very unique to this situation. He has this very unique rip on this primary electorate in your life day was saying these voters genuinely believe that there is a bias. And how donald trump has been treated by federal Law Enforcement in this country. How it was treated in the 2020 election is how those results were counted. And then on top of that, you have the situation with hunter bite and happening and you know, parallel um, you know, sort of in terrell, explain to our viewers that might not get the hunter bite and quagmire that clearly write a little bit of clarify a little bit about whats going on there and supply parts to at number one. And, you know, House Republicans have really been looking into hunter bite and particularly in his to his business dealings and how his father, whether his father was involved with his business dealings on the hill this week. Im a former business associate of hunter biden testified. And essentially said that joe biden was conference in to say hello on speaker phone to some of these in some of these meetings to some of these associates when he was Vice President , or when he at the status is Vice President. Now theres also you were creating the illusion of acts version of access that with a client. Yes, i go down. Think if you were Vice PresidentUnited States or present United States, you would be concerned about someone creating the illusion of acts as absolutely just to be fair to those repub, with the water line. And even if he was just saying how low you know, it gives the illusion to access it. Its almost like hes selling him. So hes selling himself as the son of the Vice President , which is, um, you know, ill ask the call at this point. But hunter bite and this also dealing with very serious legal issues related to drug prop your drug usage as well as a gun, a gun charge um he was in possession of the fire firearm illegally. So, and there was a plea deal made at some point error. We thought there would be a plea deal made between prosecutors and Hunter Bidens team that unexpectedly collapse. So the, the future for hunter biden is very uncertain at this point. And its continuing to really plague the white house and that theyre constantly having to answer questions about the House Republican part, the legal issue, and also his a child he had with a woman in arkansas. Finally, the white house acknowledged for president biden, for the 1st lady, acknowledge the existence which i really i really want to get to these a dozen other writ republican state. But i want to give him a moment to Rhonda Sanderson this huge group. You had dave of a internal communications on the messaging app signal that showed connectivity between senior members back campaign and some pretty vile videos. But really on the id love to hear and get a snapshot of that, but is the dis, Sanchez Campaign in floating right now . We see layoffs, we see questionable fundraising. Uh, you know, targets being hit. You know, were not here. And im just wondering where do you think the sanchezs as we look right now . Is he, is he in free fall . Well, if youre, youre almost at the paralyzed the santas campaign, because there is a santas Campaign Operation that the ality staffers work for a very large communication staff has been shrunk down with a 38 layoffs. And then there was a super pack never backed down, which is not allowed to coordinate. Im using scare quotes because i was in iowa every event. The santas held, including a after party for people who went to the idea of the dinner was hosted by the super pack is riding on the bus with this rebec. Uh so they are clearly core. Yeah. They are recording the survey or i could violate, i just wanna, they are violating the law involved in broad daylight and, and, and nighttime, becoming a theme of this discussion with others that arent really and for us to get to certain people. But yeah, that, so theres a super fact that it has all the money, it needs to run ads to put them on a bus. Then theres a Campaign Operation which is supposed to be messaging. And look, theres only one candidate whos giving speeches. I thought just my opinions reporter covering the guy the speech he gave an iowa on friday, 10 minutes hard kit hard stop was the best eat articulated his message that i look at my record in florida. Look at how much more effective i can be of donald trump without saying his name on the trail. He has been sort of rambling. He will get a side track. These i think is on day 10 of arguing with the Vice President over florida education standards. And in the campaign where they were trying to do is with these messages which are referring to keep folks inside the campaign. Were trying to make viral videos that had kind of the tenor of the internet. They looked like for jan, it looked like the kind of things that you learned most could retweet that had you know, little little cartoons of sad, depressed people becoming happy when they saw how, how ethic and cooled ronda santas was how he was making liberals cry. How he was making trans people angry. They were, they were coordinating with these videos. And once there was a blow back they, theyve kind of threw a staffer who they said was great in them under the bus. They actually say, reporter is, they told reporters quietly they, theyve agreed they didnt say it themselves. What we saw in these internal discussions that they really were trying to foam up from the runway and create real excitement for the santas by helping create some videos and then distributing them to a non student on with twitter account. So youd log in, i told her it looked like proud elephant us just found this amazing thing that makes the safest look. Awesome. And in some cases, with his hands campaigned creating it and say, hey, you can check this out and read, read it for us. What did do for the campaign, basically nothing apart from the negative stories. They dont, but they were trying to recreate some of this organic magic that the down trump had in 2016 when he so fresh and interesting to her. A lot of Republican Voters that they would share images a hand that youre his best insults. Looking at him talking on these people at the debate, they were trying to do that in organically for the, for the santas. And it wasnt really working. Its, i think its one of several problems theyve had, but this is that, i mean, they have a super pack and throwing the normal campaign and they had a candidate running kind of a blog campaign. And the staff of the candidate were trying to strategy that was just not making sense to anybody. Certainly not now that we have written about it. Julia, how do you see is campaign what i hear is, you know, a lot of any immigration stuff, a lot of l g b t q stuff, a lot of pro crypto currency stuff. Mean is that the pathway to, to being victorious and the g o. P to yeah, so randa sanders is such an interesting figure be and i was in florida for the most of the height of the pan demik, and thats when we saw his rise. And we also saw that of a switch flip with him. I dont want to say he was necessarily moderate before, but it wasnt a culture war warrior during his 1st 2 years as governor, that really switched with co that and he saw how successful his corona virus pandemic policy were with republicans in florida, independence, and how other republicans from across the country were sort of elevating him and making him the Gold Standard as to how to deal with the corona virus. Since then, you know, he is very much as a blow out in the 2020 to mid terms. He easily won that defeating a former Florida Governor. Um, you know, when we saw republicans who are very successful in florida and part thanks to him and his campaign apparatus. But since then we have seen donald trump just after donald trump had a bit of a rocky launch. We have seen him really sky rocket and the polls skyrocket among g o p voters. And its just become evident that donald trump has more firm standing then randa santas does. I think dave was alluding to this with his report. Right. So what, what he just said, but there is less criticism that his campaign has been to online. Well, let me ask, you know, when i get out and talk to republicans, i talk to the business people, the, the person who sort of stands out, they said is not like all of the others. Is vac ramos. Want me . Yeah. Its the next name is coming up a lot. Hes the author folks of work inc. Inside corporate america, social justice scam. And hes kidding, at work isnt in its practical greedy elements. And you know, his numbers, whatever, you know, 3 percent or 2 percent, somewhere around that, that level. Um, so he has not caught on fire yet, but i gotta tell you, when im around donors, im up talk to the rich republican crowd. They liked this guy is does he have any password . Yeah, they liked the back and they liked him. Scott is right. Wow. They do like times yeah, i dont, its almost like god, however, is still very, very low in the polls hasnt gain traction like that, but donors like them and its, its almost like theres these 2 tiers in this race. Its Ronda Sanchez trying to beat donald trump, but then its the vax, the 10 scots, the nikki haley is trying to swipe and get us at randa santos. I think thats really what youre starting to play out. You thought really play out in a way last week when you saw around de santis and 10 scott hitting back and forth over florida. Is that the occasion policy . There was a line in that policy that suggested that slate and slaves, people in the United States could have benefited were from slavery. That got a lot of. Yeah. But it raises assisting question dave and i and i read it. I dont know if is yours is so we have just talked about the fantasy primary with the back and with tim scott with nikki haley and with a saw hutchins. And theyre all these other potential choices out there. And theyre all saying thats baloney. Theres no chance that any of the going to come in, but, but i am interested in the messages and just certain degree. People that run for campaigns traditionally. Now donald trump was not always generous in this way. When he ran are, are become part of the franchise later, much like pete booted judge, became part of the abiding franchise after stepping back. And im just wondering what you think about vix messaging some of these other candidates and how they are lining up in this, in this campaign so far. Oh, something thats happening is the one reason the field is so large as even saying is that who they are to calculations. One republicans who knew randa santas before he started running for president and thought he liked her his, my thought he would go the distance, they feel pretty good right now. But weve got to 4 months and over the royal 5 actually since i and the other is some calculation that may be trouble getting to such legal trouble that he cant, but he cant run. Hes knocked out for some reason who will be there. Once we get to the convention, well walk, pick up the pieces of it. Its not really in that category. Yeah, he started running as an officer, very successful out there. Man, if you were going round covering republican events because there were events in 2021, you were seeing him, it would be a bit or speaker. Explaining how we came from the corporate world. He saw how, what is diversity Equity Inclusion were making Quick Corporation is less effective. They relate, they were, they were breaking down american society. Hes just taking that and turn that in for a president ial campaign and added some policy. So i believe, you know, semaphores talked to him early on hes, hes taking positions on things that he wasnt even talking about to be in the campaign. Hes just kind of building this plane in the air as it goes, i guess he something you got used to as a c, e o. But that is a question about him is uh, does he have a pass to the presidency . If you talked iowans i, i find the same thing. Theyll mention a, trump is their favorite, or maybe some people dont love trump they, they, theyll, theyll get vague in the mix. And i heard this and put a judge and same the same point in the, in 2019 talking democrats. I heard, but a judge mentioned by every democrat and iowa, who said, well, a warren. But i also like this guy as a backup. Hes, hes actually got himself into that position is hes not been very critical of drop. Hes actually taking enough positions that i think are maint would say if a populace. But for example, he thinks we should re negotiate a version of the ttp and get back into it is reason enough where i started to see other campaigns, quietly pushed, paintings about vague remo swami saying, hey, this guy is this guy is no good. He literally sounds like an anti globalist, but hes not really. He has gotten more traction then people whove been, you know, governor and they take them seriously. They take him seriously. So they later than the knocking down now. Yeah. And scott has, who mentioned, ive heard more of that from the donor level. People whove met him and he, hes, hes charming. Hes just you, he holds the room of the way the saint is can. And hes picked up some ground with, with iowans, with a conservative message, but the focus really is just this guy seems more likable. He can begin to feel more people. The missing factor out when he get to repetitive is that all these candidates, right . It possibly are saying i can be more electable than down trump. Rumba swamis. 37. He talks about winning a lance. Why was trump number one . They have not comments or help look into that. Trump cant win a landslide. They can envision trump winning. If theyve got people like mike lind hold, but for my pillow right around saying he actually did one landslide. It was rig. But all of them had say, i can offer a more popular version of what trump was running on with some of the just send it off there are some voters who say, oh great i my cousin never wrote for trump cuz he found youd be wish to hear about us, but mostly what we can go to right. Talking that julia, let me ask you in short form. So many different parts of the Republican Party as it is constructed now have flirted with white nationalism, have flirted with race as a defining feature of what theyre going after. Can a person of color an indian background, like nikki haley or a black man, like tim scott actually become a winner . Do you see a pathway where the party somehow grows in that direction to say, were not going to let race get in the way of our candidates . Its a good question because i think there really is this hard core, far right. Populous wing of the Republican Party, and thats going to be a roadblock. That being said, though, you know, we have seen um, you know, maybe some enthusiasm dampen among black men in particular with the democratic party. And we have seen republicans starting with the Republican National committee, right, really started to 0 in on some of these communities of color and states like california of the Asian American community, the black community, but hispanic community. Republican party has made in roads with hispanic community, particularly in florida with that cuban american vote. So i think there is a chance, and i think they see someone as like a tim scott or nikki haley. Or if its a promise for kwame, being more symbolic of what america looks like. But there is that really hard core populace part of the party that feels so drawn to someone like donald trump, that theres a connect there. Dave, doug bergen, governor in north dakota. I met him the other day here in washington at the 4 Seasons Hotel of nancy place. Hes a billionaire governor and hes he to qualify to get on stage. Apparently, he basically said, hey, dont need a dollar to me so you can get enough of the qualifying numbers of people, 40000 people and cross 20 sites, 200 a month, 20 state. You get it all the details, but hell send them a 20. 00 gift card for ease buying, campaign contributions. I just dont any other way you can define it. But dave, you watched more elections that ive ever seen . If you ever seen anyone do anything like doug burnam . No. So the, the democrats really innovated this idea of women who, who go to the debates by saying you need some sort of donor threshold. They did this, actually the irony is the bernie sanders. Itd be inspiration for the see the always had a large donor base, but he got this and his new goes, he had like more 3. 00 donors than any right. His ed. Right. And there was games occasion of this when democrats drive it or can is try and get mix in 2019 to make it the outright. Im going to give you 19 extra dollars that give me one that level i had not been tried before, but the same thing with the super pack, the fcc in this country, not to get to in the weeds, but the Electron Commission that says whether its legal or not, its evenly divided between the parties and they just never adjudicate these things. So you can just try to plot the law then maybe 2 years later we get to find a, its one of those, you know, ask for, dont ask for permission and you know, ask for forgiveness later deals. And so hes doing that. The mirror miami whos running also getting very little attention doing something similar is offering like a chance to win a college scholarship. Yeah. That, that level of gimmickry is, is new to this race. And it does do what you were saying at highlight these candidates who want to be in the conversation. They might not have a passive presidency, but they might be on the future team. A few future president trump, maybe francis. Whereas wasnt in the, in the mix for head secretary transportation secretary, but maybe if he runs this race drops out and or sit down, trump, maybe hes in the mix, then not to be too cynical. Were allowed to be cynical here. That seems to be whats happened with these campaigns because you cover them and nobodys showing up. Nobodys that interested in them yet. But theyre getting mentioned to me and bring them got proof of bringing. Ive been governor of the state for 2 terms that a great job, huge economic growth, gets his 1st big magazine profiles by saying hes running for president. Does he want to be president . Im sure he does, but this is the way you get in that conversation. Now you have to gain this process either figuratively, by getting in or literally by offering people bribes to do to get into the debate. Well, let me just ask is we just wrap this up . Give me your gut reaction. Who do you think the republican primary nominate will be, you know, at the end of the process, the state trumpet, the nothing, nothing that normally causes gravity to drag guy down is causing it to happen. So i trump until something crazy happens. And what ive just told you is private every public and owners could tell you, julia say donald trump, hes winning violence slide. But without, i want to think political reporters, julia manchester, at the hill and david white go at summit for a lot of scoops lately. Thank you so much for being with us today. Thank you. Thank you. So whats the bottom line . Trump may think he has the republican nomination in the back, but the world is full of surprises. No one predicted that a junior senator from illinois who was 35 points behind Hillary Clinton would become the democratic nominee. And eventually the president , that was brock obama and the year was 2008. For more than a year. The media called clinton, the presumed nominee and the inevitable winner. But front runners dont always remain front runners. The parties dont have to name their official candidate till next summer. And so much can happen between now and then. There are folks in the Republican Party for watching and waiting to pounce and make their pace on why they are the better choice to have the republican tickets and challenge deal by next year. Trump knows that, and thats why hes not taking anything for granted. And thats the bottom line, the to mom and oh, i can most yeah something space shauna, which is a make it a unique eco system just being hosted by human activity on a number of fronts when to run up for factors of intensive farming that comes too much the how do you take size and these types of medication is devastating at the classroom at the university of most. Yeah, i mean by, on a, just, i mean, it has just team 3 different species. A need to maintain a change in case of another. 48000 c homes in the modeling 520212002 remains east creek. Extra wondering.
