Ever come. Making history for women in the nfl. What the break there means for the game. Plus dillon goes electric. 50 years later the day that changed music. Diplomacy figured prominently with Jonathan Pollard. There is no question that he spied for israel, and there is no question that americas ally pushed for decades to release him from prison. Today pollard and his supporters got his wish with the announcement that hell be paroled in november. Given the contentious relationship between the two countries in the wake of the Iran Nuclear Deal, many people question the timing. First, Mike Viqueira is in washington. Mike . Well, john, the white house insists that the Iran Nuclear Deal plays no role in pollards parole. There is a mandatory parole after 30 years. The only thing that would is stopped it if he posed a threat or misbehaved in prison and gotten his time extended. The meeting today agreed that on november 21st Jonathan Pollard will be released in a case that has caused fierce passions over the years. He was arrested as he tried to make his way in to the Israeli Embassy seeking asylum after disclosing classified information to the israelis. The white house the National Security spokesman has a statement out tonight that reads in part. Mr. Pollard will serve his sentence mandated in statute for the serious crimes he committed. The president has no intention of altering the terms of mr. Pollards parole. He has to stay in the United States for five years. His attorneys are asking him if that can be waived and he can go jerusalem. Youre right israel has asked to release Jonathan Pollard early and grant him complementcy and in a has not happened here. The decision has been made to release him from prison in november. What impact is it expected to have on the relationship and the United States and israel. Well, you know, again this is a date fate da d cmoply. Main regard john pollard as a hero and has asked that he be released early. That just has not happened. Loretta lynch dismissed the motion that this was timed around the very controversial Iran Nuclear Deal. They have been far thinking of people 30 years ago to sentence mr. Pollard and set this mandatory release date to coincide with the iran deal. And if they were able to pull that off i would be quite impressed. So Loretta Lynch largely scoffing at the notion that this was done to appease public opinion, an opinion that is very much against the deal that has been struck by john kerry with the iranians and the p5 1, kerry saying after a capitol hill hearing that theyre not at all connected, the iran deal and parole of Jonathan Pollard. Ambassador, at one time you were against the release of Jonathan Pollard. Then in 2012 you changed your mind. Why . I was against the release when i was first asked about it during the time i was director of Central Intelligence in 93 and 95. Because he had only been in prison six or seven years and people who spy for friendly countries such as south korea philippines and greece historically in the United States have been sentenced to not staying in prison more than six or eight years but they have stayed about that long. Pollard had not stayed that long when i was first asked. And then 20, 25 years ago i was asked again. By that point he had been in prison over a decade. And i thought that that was long enough and i had had that possession since late 90s that i thought it was time to release him because he was serving the same time as other spice from friendly countries. The people who stay for life are people like emes and hanson and those who have gotten people killed. So does it matter whether a spy is from an allied country or not . Spice from friendly countries has been six seven eight, nine years. Spice fromspies from hostile countries has been 25 years. Pollard kept for 30 years was incarcerated much longer than a friendly spy has ever been incarcerated. Why do you think that is . I dont know. I wont cast dispersions on peoples motives, i wont say what those motives were, but he was kept much longer than the history and tradition of this thing would suggest. The israelis have tried to make a deal with pollard on other occasions. You dont think if thanksgiving there isyou dont think there is a relationship with the iran deal . I would doubt that there is. I think the iran deal is so bad no matter what happened to pollard, and i think pollard should have been freed many years ago. Ambassador, if you would stay with us for just a moment i have another topic i want to talk with you in just a moment. During todays house hearing committees onkerry said john kerry said that the u. S. Is safing because of the deal. It was their second appearance on capitol hill in a week. The sanctions against iran have worked because they brought iran to the negotiating table. Secretary kerry said that the real goal is to prevent iran from making a Nuclear Weapon. Round two on capitol hill for the chief negotiators and the pitchman for an issue that is not sitting well for republicans and some democrats. There are a number of issues. Trying to convince september ticks that tickskeptics that this is the best deal. There is no sunset in this ever. Secretary kerry said pulling out of the agreement now will give iran a free pass to double their pace of uranium enrichment. If we walk away, we walk away alone. Our partners are not going to be with us. The clock has already started ticking. The Republicancontrolled Congress has until september 17th to review the deal and vote to prove or disapprove. And by the tone today the administration has a tough road ahead. If this agreement goes through iran gets a cash bonanza bonanza. A boost to its International Standing and lighted path towards nuclear. He is at times secretary kerry could not hide his frustration. Or do you care more about this deal or u. N. s approval or u. N. Sovereignty or the peoplemr. Secretary . I dont think i dont need an inlessons from you about who i represent. I represented and fought for our country since i was out of college. And. And god bless you on your service. Dont give me any lessons on that. Okay . Let me make it Crystal Clear to you. This is americas interest. Because america is the principle guarantor. And particularly with respect to some of our closest friends. The secretary also pushed back on the notion that there is a better alternative. You know, we hear these complaints well, this agreement doesnt do this, this agreement is going to give them money. This agreement is going to do this. What this agreement is supposed to do is stop them from having a Nuclear Weapon. I want to hear somebody tell me how are we going to do that. But republicans were unrelenting and unconvinced. America got played like a fivestring quartet, and you sir, respectfully you dont have the power to surrender our greatness. In another attempt to win sport support. John one of the biggest concerned voiced today. 24day window between when inspectors want to see a site and when iran will let them in, iran has 24 days to stall. Members are concerned about that. But the white house Officials Say that without that 24day window iran could stall endlessly, john, and administration Officials Say that the Energy Experts the Intelligence Community and the u. S. Will know if iran makes its side of the deal. All right libby, thank you. Lets bring back in our guest. Why . It would be different if it was a deal with denmark. But its the greatest terrorist country in the world. Its government lies all the time. They call it tahkia lie to go infidels and its recommended not just suggested. The governmentthe wonderful iranian people deserve much better than this, but the iranian government are theocratic totalitarians suicidal. Go back to 09 to the massacres of students in the streets when they were trying to maintain a free election. With all due respect there are countries that have done that as well. Other countries do not routinely say death to israel and death to the americans in every speech and every public rally. And this country is also iran is building an empire. The houthies in yemen. Bashir in syria. They arethey are as bad in behavior as countries get. Let me try this on you. Longest serving jewish member of congress sandy levin said he supports the iran deal saying it will make israel more safe and secure and will protect israel. Its the best way to protect israel he says. What do you think he doesnt understand about this deal . I disagree with him completely and i think so do most major jewishamerican organizations except for a few on the far left political spectrum. What would you have the United States do . Walk away from the deal . How will that stop iran from getting a Nuclear Weapon. We shouldnt just walk away from the deal. One thing that does is stop them from getting 150 billion with which to expand their terrorism by keeping them from getting the money that has been sequestered as a result of the sanctions. Also we should increase the radicalism of sanctions. Particularly on the sanctions and those relating to their oil. We ought to have flexible fuel in all our cars so we can drive on somethingfuels on rather than gas. How is that going to stop them . That will drop the fuel costs, and one of the most damning things that one can do to iran. Russia wont like it neither will venezuela but were not in the business of granting favors to any of those countries. You dont think that iran is close to getting a Nuclear Weapon . Yes, they are close. I dont think any of those things stop them from producing one. Well certainly this agreement does nothing. If thats what you think, is there anything else that does . Doubled a trebled sanctions can hurt them enough that gives them pause. The only thing that has a chance of improving the situation now is to radically increase the sanctions and get away from this very for a agreement. Ambassador woolsey, thank you for joining us on the program. Thank you. Iran has shine a new light on prisoners in their prison. A missionary is 32 today, he has spent the last three birthdays in iranian prison accused of spying. Bisi onileere spoke with his family in detroit. John, amir ahmadis family had been fight forgiveries release. When the Iran Nuclear Deal was announceed they saw it as a sign of hope. Now theyre waiting for the next move. Its a nightmare. We wake up every morning if this is a bad dream. This has been the reality for Sarah Hekmati and her moment. Her young brother amir an iranianamerican visiting iran. He has never returned. We have we have not gotten used to the fact that this is happening to us. Initially charged with espionage, a former marine and defense contractor was sentenced to death but now is serving a tenyear prison sentence. His only crime was to visit his grandmother and having the history of being in the marines. One of ten americans being held by iran. The Obama Administration has been criticized for not guaranteeing their release as part of the nuclear deal. But the hakmetis is supported the decision. Do you think that because you have all of these sides coming together iran working with the u. S. Essentially that it may help in the long run . Were cautiously optimistic. We obviously can appreciate diplomacy moving forward and how that is going to open the doors for more communication and more engagement. Ive come to feel like although i never met him i feel like i know him here. In june there was introduced a resolution that was overwhelmingly approved calling for iran to immediately release h ekmati. I hope that they would understand that the world is watching them. And the world will judge them in terms of their legitimacy based on not just what they agree to at the negotiating table but all of their other behaviors. I hope that they realize that it would be an important gesture an important step forward into the Global Community by realizing these prisoners. But they feel that time is not on their side. Hekmatis family said that he has endured two hunger strikes and suffered abuse behind bars. Anything that we could think of that will bring us one step close for bringing him home we feel like weve tried and we feel like its never enough because hes not home. To make matters worse his father has terminal brain cancer. For us, every day is a tragedy. Every day. So you know, for us we cant wait any long. But they refuse to give up. In june they attended a Nuclear Summit with monday tell williams call canning for amirs release. They raised awareness through his plight in social media. As Congress Begins to debate and dissect the nuclear deal amirs family hopes that some how it leads to his release. Sara hekmatis family said that her family is in touch with amir on almost a daily basis. In the meeting congressmen issued a statement say nag congress will be watching irans behavior very closely over the next several weeks. All right bisi, thank you. In ethiopia president obama wrapped up his historic african trip today with a warning. Addressing the African Union the president said that progress cant happen if africas leaders refuse to step down when their terms end. Its an issue that has plagued africa for years. Mohammed adouud reports. It was the firstever address by usa president in front of the African Union. And president obama did not disappoint. It was his criticism of African Leaders who remain in office beyond limits is what garnered with snort. It risks instability and strife as we have seen in burundi. And this is oftenthis is often just a first step down a perilous path. Obama brought out burundis president Pierre Nkurunziza whose election for a third term was used as an example. He suggested that African Leaders clean up corruption. Nothing will unlock africas economic potential more than ending the cancer of corruption. And you are right that it is not just a problem of africa. It is a problem of those who do business with africa. It is not unique to africa. Corruption exists all over the world, including in the United States. But here in Africa Corruption drains billions of dollars from economies that cant afford to lose billions of dollars. The u. S. Leader also commended african nations for taking leadership in peacekeeping Counter Terrorism initiatives across the continent. Most of the president s comments were well received. The Key Highlights of the speech was the point he raised about Africa States depend on after. We cannot expect the rest of the world to pay for us. The part where the hold should leave and the new should come. Let the new leaders lead. In his address that marked the end of his fiveday trip president obama warned that africas impending population boom could bring both opportunities and disorder. He asked African Leaders to create more jobs and opportunities for young people or risk sacrificing economic potential. Coming up next on this broadcast, planned parenthood under fire. Plus a growing trend not to use standardized test scores in college admissions. Planned parenthood is under fire. A graphic new video was released by the antiabortion group. The third video that shows that the Organization Sales fetal tissue for a profit. Planned parenthood denies it. But there is seeking to stop any funds. Its a high profile Public Relations firm that deals with the activists. The center for medical progress this claims to show that planned parenthood profits from the sale of fetal tissue. Congressional panels have announced investigations into planned parenthood practices. I want to be clear. The allegation that planned parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation is not true. Planned parenthood says it has done nothing wrong. It said that it collects money for tissue donation but that money is used to cover expenses such as the use of its space and transportation of the tissue. The government gives planned parenthood 500 million a year in federal funding. The Organization Says that money is used to provide pap tests breast exams and screening for sexually transmitted diseases pi by law none of the 500 million goes towards abortions. A former nun and abortion rights activist said that cutting off federal money for planned parenthood would hurt Womens Health especially poor women. I think there has been enough through the past decade a concerted attack on planned parenthood. And a desire and irrational desire on the opponents of Family Planning and abortion. Planned parenthood said it treats 2. 5 million each year and one in five women in america will use the organization at some point in their lives. It doesnt make profits were any serviceabortion doesnt make profit. Its a nonprofit organization. Planned parenthood said today that antiabortion hackers targeted the organization threatening the safety of its staff members. It called on the fbi and department of justice to help and the group claiming responsibility for the hacking has threatened to post internal emails. More on this story coming up. Thank you. Jails are the Largest Mental Health provider in 44 states. We took you through cook county, now we go back to see what life is like after release . Here is ash har quaraishi. Its been seven and a half months since yvette was locked up here at Cook County Jail. Drug possession was the official charge but yvette said addiction, severe degree progression, and ptsd all contributed to why she was in jail for the third time. For the first time in nine years yvette said that shes clean. Shes packing up her belongings for another chance outside. Its time to say goodbye release date. Stay strong. Its coming for you too. Thank you. We first met yvette in june in cook country. Its the largest jail in the country, 9,000 inmates. On any given day 2500 to 3,000 of them suffer from some type of psychological illness. If a in fact makes county jail the Largest Mental Health provider in the state. I know you have anger problems. Do you get angryboom it goes up . The jail director of Mental Health advocacy. Any suicidal feeling ever . Ever feel sad for no reason . Do you find people who deliberately commit crimes to get back here just to get care . Yes. What does that say about the state of our Mental Healthcare system . Its been a dirty little secret for a long time. No one cares about and we do, so we have to do something. In may clinical psychologist the first Mental Health to run any program in a james in the joint. What does this say about your background and treating the mentally ill is hed needed for this position. Its a sad reality that this has come to be for anyone who is thinking that a correctional facility is the proper place for Mental Health treatment lets consider where we want our family members to receive Mental Health services. I dont think any of us would say Cook County Jail jail would be the place. But yet for some like yvette, it was the only place to get it. This is the longest ive ever been in custody and this really woke me up. It really has woke me up. I wont be so lucky the next time. Maybe i would be dead somewhere. I dont want that. I dont want to do that to myself. I dont want to do that to my family. A few weeks later we caught up to yvette. She said shes adjusting well to the life on the outside. How do you make sure that you dont fall to the things that affected you in the past. I spend time with my children my grandchildren family. How do you feel. The best ive felt in years. Yvettes recovery with the help of cook county continues. As long as she lives in the city limits she can access therapy and she continues to meet with her probation officer once a week. This is good stuff. Ive never seen this before. Really . Granted you havent been out of custody that long amount of time but youve come so far in such a little amount of time. More importantly yvette is looking for a job and trying to make up for lost time with her granddaughter. I just keep myself busy. I stay with my grandchildren the majority of the time or if i need to go to the park with my dog, anything. Im giving myself a chance. Ash har quaraishi. Al jazeera chicago. Now to education. George Washington University has dropped standardized testing requirements for most applicant applicants. Its one of the schools to make s. A. T. And a. C. T. Optional. Many say that the tests are teststests are biased, and many Good Students are choosing not to i apply because of those requirements. Chief of staff to deputy mayor in washington, d. C. Eric welcome back. Thanks for having me. What do you think about this move . Im wary of it. If the intention is to created a created a versety. I dont know this is the way to go. They had just changed the s. A. T. Test to make it one that is accepted bymore diverse. Culturally relevant, more culturally sensitive i think thats right. Even though the s. A. Talent is doingt. Says that, george Washington University is saying no. The colleges are throwing up their hands. Our k12 system is not preparing students to be competitive in the admissions process and to be successful once they get to college. The department of education did a study in new york that said that last year 40 of new york city high schools were not providing algebra 2 physics and chemistry. Those are core classes for colleges and if 40 of schools dont offer those classes. How does throwing out the test change that . Go i dont think it does at all. Thats the problem. The problem isnt the test. The problem is that were not giving the opportunities the hard curriculum, were not having those expectations to make sure that they get to college and succeed in college. You say by eliminating the test this does not help the folks that its intended to help . I dont think its going to, no. Who does it help . You know, im afraid it helps students who may be have some test anxiety but have a robust transcript otherwise. They have all the key classes enrichment opportunities and Extracurricular Activities and do as well. Those are the students that are really disadvantaged they dont have those pieces either. I dont see what theyre going to be able to offer. After log at this question online and we talked about this as well. We talked about the core courses, standardized testing in grade school, high school, you have to wonder whether or not testing is the problem or if its the education system. If you dont educate the kids, you will theyll never do as well on tests. Henry ford had a ching, whether you think you can or if you think you cant youre right. Its what we expect from our students and prepare them to do, if we give them the rigorous content, they can do them. Thats bigger than any test in their life. Thanks. Thank you. In hawaii the u. S. Military has exhumed the unidentified services members. Hundreds are still classified as missing after the sinking of the u. S. Oklahoma in 1941. Five caskets were unearthed today. Scientists plan to use dna testing to identify the fallen. Jake ward explains. On a sunday morning december 7 1941, japanese planes appeared without warning over pearl harbor. Lowell valley died along side 400 of his ship mates. Bob valley said news of his brothers death was the worst pain of his life, but trying to bring the remains home pro longed that torture. The biggest frustration is the navy that fought us all the way. Im going to tell it like it is. To understand the nature that have fight its important to understand how the sailors on the oklahoma died on December December 7th. The oklahoma has sustained anywhere from 9 to 11 torpedo hits. She literal hi had her guts slashed out of her. Now shes turning over. And those crews are in their general quarters. The crews remained underwater for years. When they brought up their remains were mixed together in the remains of the National Cemetery of the pacific known as the punch bowl. When the navy could not tell him who was buried where he began to catalog the bodies himself. I went to get myself a clip board and paper i started at a1, i spent many moons up here. I went after all navy, everything the world war ii that was buried in that system glare after nearly 40 years of work emerys crusade helped convince the department of defense which had argued that the mixed up graves should be left alone to displan its existing department for handling the dead, and create a new lab for hawaii to identify remains through dna. Still it will be an enormous challenge. We exhumed one casket in 2003. There were five skulls in that casket but through the analysis we know there are 100 individuals represented in that one casket. We know that these remains are highly comingleed. Researchers believe theyll be able to identify 80 of the remains over the next five years. Perhaps lowe ll valley will be one of them. I just want the story to be out. The true story. I dont care who likes it or who gets stepped on. Jacob ward, al jazeera, honolulu. Well be right back. Could have been them. My name is imran garda. The show is called third rail. When you watch the show, youre gonna find us being unafraid. The topics will fascinate you. Intrigue you. They take this seriously. After one game she moved to the sidelines as as the teams assistant coach. She caught the eye of bruce aryans, the cardinals head coach. The players only want to be taught how to be better. They dont care who teaches it to them. She obviously has the background and experience that were looking for as a player and a coach. Now to music and culture, its been 50 years since bob dylan rocked the stage at the newport folk festival with an electric fan. It garnered boos, some cheers from the grounds and criticism from the folk music scene as little dan dylan left behind his accusic routes. What mate news was that dylan for the first time appeared live on stage with an electric instrument. But more than that, those where he was worshiped booed him for it. [singing] i would assume twotoa younger crowd that doesnt sound like much of a big deal. Explain why. Well, the answer to why was because it was bob dylan and newport was supposed to be the place for traditional music for folk music and dylan had been the guy who joined arms with everyone, sang blowing in the wind. [singing] now he was shouting how does it feel to be on your own. [singing] he gets on stage and he starts to play with a very loud band nobody had heard anything that loud in their lives. They had never been to a rock festival. Also, he had always been perky, chatty and friendly. Now hes the guy we have seen ever since. He walks up frowning, never says a word and just sings his songs. The reaction to fragile peace the crowd . Some people were cheering, but some felt that he was being inappropriate or that it sounded terrible. Even the godfather of this folk festival, which was pete seger. Pete seger was very upset. Why . He felt this was a festival that was supposed to bring people together, and dylan was trying to push people away. Thats interesting. Why wouldnt pete seger with seemingly open flexibility. His whole idea was i walk out on stage with my banjo and guitar and i do something that you can then do with your friends and its no different. You do it with your friends you sing here with me whereas dylan was doing something with his friends. That sounds like a very force forceful father filling figure saying this is what you do. Dylan said what seger does is like tribal medicine man bringing people together. And rock stars live out peoples fascinate fantasies. He goes out on stage. Three songs and people were there not for the newport folk festival. A lot of people were there just for dylan. They didnt care about the newport folk festival. Thats when they went nuts. People start calling for bob dylan to come back. He said ale come back. Hell bring his acoustic guitar. Which he did. It sounds like there was a lot of controversial during that period. It was only a couple of minutes when he goes off stage they start to call him back, and what is it, an argument going on backstage. People are saying you going to back out there. Hes saying they dont want me out there. What happened to him that night, to bob dylan why did he change . I think he wanted to stop being the voice of the generation. I think he wanted to be able to be an artist, to be himself and not to have to have this whole weight of responsibility. [singing] how does this moment in Music History fit in to this sort of continuum, folk rock, modern music . Folk music had been the music for Intelligent College kids.
