The stage is set for a second track show down between usain bolt and Justin Gatlin at the World Championships in beijing. One community, 276 schoolgirls, 500 days, thats how long its been since the girls were ab ducted in northeast nigeria. 57 escaped, nothing has been heard of those left behind. The girls were taken from boko haram, from their school in the middle of the night. They were preparing for end of year exams. Getting the education for which boko haram is exposed. This is proof they were alive, but not a single one has been rescued. Outrage at the governments inability to find the girls and clampdown on mass protests in nigeria. We want the girls now, and alive. Reporter the Campaign Hashtag bring back our girls began in nigeria, rapidly proceeding around the goirls. It drew the dangers of big names such as Ellen Degeneres and first Lady Michelle obama. And became a big story. This unconscionable act was committed by a terrorist group determined to keep these girls from getting an education. Grown men, attempting to snuff out the aspirations of young girls. I want you to know that barak directed our government to do Everything Possible to support the nigeria governments efforts to find the girls and bring them home but the girls are still not home. Boko haram said most converted to islam, and been married off and the Brutal Campaign terrorized the northeast of nigeria, with abduction and murder, showing no sign of ending. Lets go to our correspondent ynonne ndedge in abuja. 500 days. Its hard to believe they havent been found and theres no word of them. Despite the video, that is all that we have already seen. What is the update. What is going on. Thats right, theres an incredible amount of sadness and disillusionment. Today is the 7th day in a week of activities by relatives of the girls. They have been marching throughout the country, trying to draw attention to the fact that, yes, its 500 days and the girls have not recovered. They have events planned today, and theres a feeling that the government needs to do so much more. Now, im joined by one of the major faces of the bring back our girls campaign. Saying there, 500 days, how does it feel . 500 days is painful, heartwrenching, and only marginable that be get through the days, talking about 219 chibok girls, how as a nation can we move away and allow the girls to be out there with abductors for 500 days. Its almost unforgiveable what we did to our daughters. They were girls that went to school and wanted an education. They were told to aspire and dare to dream. The question i ask is what the is crime of the chibok girl, is it because shes poor, nigerian, or that she wanted to be education. Lets talk about your assessment of the governments performance to find the girls. What are you and the campaign erts saying about the effectiveness of the authorities to rescue them . Well, first of all, what we have seen is the fact that the president has taken ownership. The victim, like we saw with the administration, the former president. They are the victim. We have a president who said that in his inaugural speech, the war against insurgents would not have, and they have repeatedly mentioned he wants them rescued and go back to school. Not only being rescued, but to have a future and achieve dreams, that gives a sense of sincerity, purpose in what the president is doing. And we sent that, indeed, is it enough. No, it isnt. Theres much that needs to be done. Theres a lot, chibok is a symbol of the areas before and after the abduction, and theres others this weigh dont know who they are, and we asked to where are those that are abducted. And even those rescued a while ago, what they mean. To yourself, the campaigners and relatives think the girls are still alive . It is now over a year since they were last seen as a group in that video we played,le boko haram video. Do you believe they are alive . Strongly so. I believe strongly they are alive, out there, waiting for the government to come and rescue them. Its high time the government and others come together and ensure they are home. Every day they are probably being mocked that no one is coming for them, and, indeed, no one it. We had those that have been rescued repeatedly. That gives us hope. And one thing we have to understand, as much as we keep on we tell the girl child she is important, dare to dream, aspire, its also not to be a lie, because she has sisters who dreamed and as pird and what happened 500 days, they have been abducted. Many other campaigners will be marching throughout the capital later this afternoon and in the evening therell be a candle lit visual to remind people of the importance, the urgency of finding the girls and bricking them home. Thank you. Europes asylum system has been branded dysfunctional by the u. N. s refugee chief. With thousands arriving every day, european and balkan leaders are at a crisis summit in vienna. Recovering the refugee crisis at every point, Bernard Smith is in the Turkish Border town. Many refugees coming into the e. U. Are from wartorn syria. Turkey is the first stop on the journey west. Across the water is the greek island. Hull is live for us there. Half going into the country arrive here. They get to grease, travel to macedonia, into serbia. Andrew simmonds will report from belgrade. Only hungary and a wire fence stands between them. Meaning passport free trouble. Barnaby, any word from there yet . Some fine words so far about european solidarity, how the 27 member countries have to share the burden, from the austrian host, from Eastern Europe and towards the u. K. As well, which have been resolute in their opposition to a quota of people coming into the European Union. The origins of the problems lie beyond the borders, lying in political violence, instability and oppression in the middle east or parts of subsaharan africa. The most intractable and dramatic. Crisis, which is pulling people towards europe is the civil war in syria. Ill bring in bernard at this point. Youve been there on and off for four years, watching the extraordinary influx north of syria into turkey, what is your impression of how turkey is coping, and can it carry on coping if the out flow from syria continues. Consider the number is 1. 9 million, it coped well. Theres little social impact. There has been some social problems, not too severe. Where i am now is a majority city. Theres 108,000 turks, 110,000 syrians, and another story along the border with syria. Turkeys e. U. Affairs minister said turkey was at capacity, and cant take Syrian Refugees, and is worried that if fighting intensified in aleppo, as many as a million syrians could head across the border into turkey, and warned europe to expect more Syrian Refugees, and a reminder from that e. U. Affairs minister that turkey spent 6 billion in the last four years, looking after the Syrian Refugees here. Europe promised 80 million to contribute towards the costs, and yet none of that 80 million has yet to arrive in turkey. Thank you. Lets go to jonah now. Hes on the greek island. That is on the g. M. Kocoast, a w miles from turkey, a critical inpoint into the European Union. You have been down on the beaches again, have you seen more boats arriving from the turkish shore . We have been on this stretch of coastline since before dawn. In that time, six or seven hours now, we have seen 10 boats making shore. There are another three that we know, we see them in the binoculars, there would have been many more at other places through the night. Perhaps you can see the remains behind me of two large black plastic dinghies, the beech strewn with orange life vests, numbers arriving staggering. An average of 600, up until the end of june is well over a day. Island authorities overwhelmed and absolutely struggling to cope. As far as the people getting out of the boats are concerned. They are exultant, frankly. When they hit shore, they are relieved, excited, its as if the ordeal is over, in many ways its beginning again, apart from the long and difficult road ahead of them to get to the countries that they want to reach in the European Union, theres a strong road ahead, 50km to the capital, where theyll been welcomed into a squalid refugee camp. Many will have to do the distance on book. Children, elderly, it can take up to three days. Well, as jonah was saying, greece is it in the e. U. , its by no means the Promised Land as far as refugees are concerned. They head up into eastern and central europe, as we have been covering in al jazeera in recent weeks. We see them crossing macedon i cant, and they get macedonia, and they get to serbia, the last country before they want to reenter hungary. Andrew simmonds, my colleague, is in serbia. There wasnt injuries. A 300m high fence has been put up. Now, thousands of people are getting through sections where theres only razor wire. Police are failing to make arrests. Hungrys right wing government is taking a tougher line. More than 2,000 police are being sent to the boarder to reinforce it. The government will vote on plans to deploy the army here. Back in the serbian capital, up to 3,000 a day have been boarding buses bound for the hungarian border. They are record numbers. Refugees say they are treated better in serbia than grease and macedonia, but are worried about getting into hungry. Some of the marks are the last transit point before the border. This woman fled from violence in aleppo. We stay here, we are worried about rung which. Not turkey, greece, hungary why do that . I cant understand. Politicians prepare for a sim it to discuss the biggest refugee crisis, on the ground the situation is worsening what we are hearing in vienna are pleas from the western balkan countries like serbia and macedonia, for assistance from the wealthier countries in the European Union to help them with an extraordinary situation, an unprecedented situation, the Macedonian Foreign minister saying the nation per capita is dealing with a greater inflow of immigrants than any other country in europe, and i think they get some sympathy, the germans, the austrians are prepared to write them a check. Its a slightly more complicated position. They point out they are receiving hundreds of thousands of applicants, and a substantial proportion of them, 40 , originate from the western ball dance themselves. They start the journeys in countries like kosovo, albania, serbia, driven north probably more by unemployment and a sense of economic despair than anything else. From the Northern European perspective, its important to point out the balkan countries are not only transit routes for desperate people coming from syria and eritrea, but they are countries that produce a lot of people that end up in Northern Europe and who the vast majority attend to see their asylum applications rejected, they are marked as economic migrants and they return to the balkan countries. The president was clear. As he was signing the deal, he had serious reservations about it. In light of that, its difficult to understand how the peace deal may stick. The United Nations demanded both sides come to a peaceful resolution, and last week he signed a Peace Agreement with regional agreement. The International Community is. This is a good example of why there are so many reservations in south sudan about the effectiveness of the peace deal, its difficult to imagine riek machar, the leader of the rebels might be able to drive into juba and resume his post as Vice President , given how much violence there has been here. Theres a lot of people in juba that hold him responsible for the death of tens of thousands of people. Hopefully thing will get back to normal the ancient churches have been places the pilgrimage for hundreds of years. Charles stratford reports. Reporter its the spiritual home for million of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians around the world. The 11 churches were carved out of the mountainside. The ancient places of worship represent holy sites in jerusalem, and stories in the bible. They were built so christians didnt have to risk the pilgrimage from the holy land. The frees coe on the ceiling dates from the 15th century. The rocking churches are of immense archeological and historical comparisons. The places of pilgrimage around the world are literally crumbling away. The rock in this area is highly susceptibility to moisture. In this church men use a syringe to inject grout into cracks in a pillar. In terms of seismic activity, resilience, i mean, a slight earthquake would destroy the place. The fact is when you are dealing with natural strata in the terms of an Historic Building rather than a mine or a tunnel, theres little you can do. You cant line it with steel bars, youll destroy the monument. Its historic surface. Lose those, and you simply are back into rotted geology. And that process is not far off on the outside. Antony shows us what he means. And if we start losing material like this, right through here, i mean, the only future for that, without some sort of intervention is this so the idea of the bandage is to hold it in place. Until we can get there to repair it. Because every time it rains a little more falls off. If we werent to do this, it would be a catastrophe. Im lucky because i come from this area. This heritage is a big thing for us. A number of churches have been covered by temporary shelters to protect them from the rain while the work is don. On a hilltop close by, people pray. The king did not just build the churches as a human being, he built them with the help of god. It was included on the first ever u. N. E. S. C. O. World heritage site, preserving this extraordinary place of spiritual retreat for ethiopians for every cgeneration, a challenge they hope they can meet. Lets go to a culture specialist at unescos offices, with us via skype. Thank you for joining us. What a privilege to have the beautiful churches in ethiopia. And a tragedy to lose them, watch them fall away. Do you think enough is sun at the moment to prevent that from happening . Thank you very much for inviting me. This is one of the most important heritage in ethiopia for the International Community. When they described in 1958, in the national park. There were 11 churches, built 800 years ago during the rain. Still today, this is a living heritage, where religious practices are done on a daily basis. During the ethiopian chris has been conducted to this place. So this place, this site is important place. If theres a view from an origin point of view, the most serious problem for the churches is human cosis, and the crux on the churches. This happened, what was infiltration of rain and the charges. And the root of the problem, the reason for the crux. So the past attempts at conservation had mistakes and had nigive impacts on the church. So we needed the team to investigate and make an intervention. Among the most important proble problems. Well have to leave it there. Thank you very much for talking to us. European and balkan leaders are at a crisis summit. Laura kyle spoke to u. N. I. C. E. F. s deputy for macedonio, and asked what u. N. I. C. E. F. Is doing to help women and children. I estimated about 30 of the population come in here crossing through the country are women and children. So far what we have been doing is really to support support the women and children who are the most vulnerable, meaning food, water. And support, knowing that most have been it is essential that we care for them and provide them with Protection Measures they need. What way are children vulnerable as we make the long arduous journeys . You can see how distressed they are, how that they have really experienced fear, and traumatized. They are really traumatized and physically, they are very fragile because of all the way they have been through, and you can see they have been through when they left their home country in syria. So these children are buried in the rubble. And we have to make sure their rights are fully respected and they are receiving protection. Major, to ensure that they they dont face any kind of additional trauma. We need to help them, really, to help them overcome the whole anxiety and pressure, when they started the trip and join in with the families. If we look at the Bigger Picture for a moment, because the numbers are huge, some 3,000 people are estimated to be arriving at the moment in macedonia every day. Are these numbers something that the e. U. Can handle . I what we think is that it is important that the e. U. Has put in place a plan of action to support the countries who are receiving the huge numbers. And we, fully support it. This plan of action. Because it makes sure that they are ready to go, and the best interest is protected. So this is for us. We work closely with the view on with the e. U. On tha that to ensure that protection and the best interests of the child is really taken into consideration in all the measures that the country is making to support the journey. Theres a lot of legal movement. Many that live on one eyed or the other, living on the other, need to be able to move. Translation due to the inability of venezuela authorities to describe the violence crime and the narco trafficking affecting all countries, we are forced to close the border. No date has been set or reopening the border, and the impact can be felt at all levels. The streets are bustling with activity. A week into the closure, the streets have been taken over by the military. A lot of the shops are closed down, because business is down or because its employees, many of them columbian citizens, have been deported. Translation i dont know where i live. Unless both countries can reach an agreement the problems wont be sold, and the mystery here will increase. Chile is the largest supplier of copper. Half of what it produces goes to china, this weeks turmoil in the Financial Markets has chileans watching nervously across the pacific ocean. Chile, one of the most stable economies in south america was built on mining. Particularly copper, a soft mettle used in electrical wiring. Economists recognised that chile was overdependent on what it calls red gold. Events this week in china might prove them right. We have failed in an export basket. All which export every year, we are dependent on what happens with copper. And what happened to copper is that its global price slumped by 20 , and the biggest market wants less of it than expected. The fear here is if the chinese economy heads towards crisis, it will want less. With less income from copper, less dollars, the price of everything has gone up from electrical its to bread. And the government facing vociferous demands to reform the system, has less money to ilplement the situation. When china sneezes. One way or another all members will be affected, but how and how much is not yet clear. What is clear is the counter crisis is forcing the chilean copper industry. Chile cannot reduce the reliance. And its hoped they might extract something positive. Therell be survivors, the fittest, and those unlikely to be in the best position. And the Mining Industry generally will be used to having booms and busts. In the meantime, chile is watching and waiting to see what happens next in china.
