And i came very close to taking my own life at that point. I didnt really see a way out. If youre a student and you gamble do get in touch with us this morning. Some say its to supplement their income. And more mixed messages on whether or not its safe to drink when youre pregnant. Researchers say the government advice to totally abstain is based on weak evidence, but they then stress it doesnt mean its safe to drink. Well try and find out what it means. Get in touch with us this morning with your thoughts. Hello. Welcome to the programme were live until 11. Throughout the programme the latest breaking news and developing stories and, as always were really keen to hear from you. Do get in touch on all the stories were talking about this morning use the hashtag victoria live and if you text, you will be charged at the Standard Network rate. Our top story today one of the governments key pieces of legislation on brexit has passed its first test in the commons. The ayes have it. The European Union withdrawal bill, which would end the supremacy of eu law in the uk, was passed with a majority of 36 in the early hours of this morning. It now goes on to the Committee Stage and potential amendments. Theresa may welcomed the result, saying it would give Solid Foundations to the ongoing talks with brussels. But labour called the bill an affront to parliamentary democracy. Is norman here . That he is hi, norman. I couldnt see you there. Top us through what happened last night, and the ramifications. A big brexit win for the government last night, but it isjust brexit win for the government last night, but it is just around brexit win for the government last night, but it isjust around one brexit win for the government last night, but it is just around one of what is likely to be a 15 round knockout contest, because although the government won last night, there are still a 15 round knockout contest, because although the government won last night, there are still acres of debate and vote to be had before this actually becomes law, and all those eu laws get transferred into british law. And already there are signs of trouble ahead, because almost as soon as the boat was over, and people were rushing to what is known as the vote office in the house of commons to submit amendments to the build to be voted on in the coming days and weeks. What was striking was not just the number of amendments, a blizzard of amendments fired at this bill, but some new ideas. Labour, for example, have tabled an amendment, which would leave it up to mps to decide how long this transitional period the government is now talking about should actually last four. That would be a very controversial idea and i am sure the government want to say, no, no, we will decide how long it will be, and labour say, no, lets will decide how long it will be, and laboursay, no, lets leave will decide how long it will be, and labour say, no, lets leave it to mps. Another striking thing is that a number of these amendments have been tabled by conservative mps, and by these amendments there are 12 conservative names listed. Why i say that, is because if these 12 mps stand their ground and vote for these amendments, they will outweigh theresa mays majority because theyre only needs to be six or seven tory mps to vote against the government for the government to be defeated. Even with the support of the dup. So mrs may got last night but she is straight back into the danger zone because tory mps, but she is straight back into the danger zone because tory mp5, 12 at the moment, are lining up to oppose her, so some way to run, i think. And those amendments that even conservative mps are putting down, do they seem reasonable, are they there to did a spanner in the works, oi there to did a spanner in the works, or iv sensible . Some are pretty pivotal. 0ne or iv sensible . Some are pretty pivotal. One in particular would leave it up to mps of the final vote on any brexit deal or are they sensible . Is david davis comes back from brussels with a deal that mps do not think is any good then parliament can vote it down. But then what on earth would happen to us, the question is. Would we still be in the eu, would we have a deal . So thatis the eu, would we have a deal . So that is pretty important. It is tabled by 12 tory mps and includes some big names, the chairman of four big select committees, nicky morgan, and so on, so it has some oomph hide it. It is easy to see how the opposition parties might rally behind that sort of amendment, so there really are some tough days ahead for mrs may if she is to get this brexit legislation through. Thank you, norman. Bananas yesterday on the desk and apples today. What does that signify . It is more than apples. I have oatcakes, the essential fuel for all political correspondent, it keeps you going, better than porridge laughter thank you, norman. Just after half past nine we will have the views of an mps who voted for the bill, and one who voted against. Rachel schofield is in the bbc newsroom with a summary of the rest of the days news. There is surprisingly limited evidence that light drinking during pregnancy poses any risk to the baby, according to researchers, but women are still being recommended to avoid alcohol completely. Scientists at the university of bristol reviewed existing studies and didnt find any convincing proof that a drink or two a week is harmful. Analysis by the university of bristol of studies dating back to the 19505 suggests having one small glass of wine twice a week may result in a small increase in the chances of having a small baby or a premature birth. But they say theres so Little Research its difficult to be sure. The Gambling Commission is warning that new University Students may be vulnerable to gambling addiction, as many of them prepare to live away from home for the first time. The ready access to a money, through student loans, and plenty of free time as a result of low contact hours, can result in some students developing a gambling habit, with some losing thousands of pounds. This brexit supporter and former labour supporter, they say this is exactly why they voted conservative at the last election. I think people should think hard about why they voted labour because this blocking by labour will only carry on and on. We will talk to mps about this vote last night, one who voted for the eu withdrawal, and one who voted against the bill. Lets get some sport now with 0lly foster. 0lly, a much needed win for west ham and their manager last night . Yes, and early defeat and it could have been curtains for slaven bilic, the manager, but west ham won and so he lives to fight another day. 2 0, it was, and it was getting very nervy at the london stadium because the goals came pretty late. A big deflection inside the last 20 minutes, and andre are you came off the bench to seal their First League Win of the season, after that opening three defeats, so slaven bilic is relieved, you might say. We created maybe a couple of big chances, but more than that we stop them from creating anything and to be fairwe had them from creating anything and to be fair we had corners, crosses inside, there were a lot of things happening in that box, so it also gave us the boost for the second half to continue like this, and we got rewarded. A little lucky for the first is goal, but overall we deserved three points tonight. And what made it all the sweeter, victoria . It was his birthday yesterday. Happy birthday, slaven bilic. A9. Yesterday. Happy birthday, slaven bilic. 49. Your present . You can keep yourjob for now laughter and it looks like roy hodgson might be back in football later today . Yes, i was being slightly flippant about slaven bilic because after what has gone on at Crystal Palace there is a new set of rules. No sentiment there. Frank de boer sacked after just five sentiment there. Frank de boer sacked afterjust five games in charge at palace. He lost his job not long after a game of beer with you yesterday. But by all accounts roy hodgson was tapped up a couple of weeks ago about taking over not long ago after i was on air with you. Hejoined the club not long ago after i was on air with you. He joined the club that have lost all their premier league games this season without scoring a goal. We will see exactly what impact roy hodgson can make. Crystal palace have given us a lot of material for pub quizzes over the last 2a hours. Shortest managerial reign, worst start to season, and when hodgson officially gets hisjob start to season, and when hodgson officially gets his job at palace, we think later this season, he will be the third to take charge of the premier league team the third septegenarian. Roy hodgson, taking by palace. Taking over at palace. And theres a significant cricket tour taking place in pakistan at the moment whats the background . Yes, that attacked on the coach were six players were injured and eight people killed, including six policemen, and ever since then the majorforeign cricket policemen, and ever since then the major foreign cricket teams have refused to travel to pakistan on security grounds, and the team has been forced to play their home matches in exile in the United Arab Emirates, but starting today we will see three t20 matches this week played in lahore between pakistan and world i that will be captained by south africas Faf Du Plessis, and they have also attempted Englands Paul Collingwood out of retirement at the age of 41. The pakistan cricket Board Chairman says this season, as short as it is, will open the doors of International Cricket in pakistan. Heavy security there, usually reserved for heads of state, the level of security there at the moment around these cricket matches, but they are all sold out, and perhaps more significantly, victoria, sri lanka themselves are due to return next month for a t20 match. Really encouraging news, notjust for cricket, but for pakistan themselves. They have a fantastic young Exciting Team of players there. But only half of them have played at home match in their lives. Thank you very much, 0lly. Gambling amongst students is a problem with some running up debts of tens of thousands pounds or more. The Gambling Commission has told this programme its worried freshers are deliberately being targeted by casinos and betting companies. It wants universities to provide the same level of information and support about the risks from gambling as they do for drugs, alcohol and safe sex. Hannah morrison reports on the struggles some students have faced with gambling addictions while at uni. When that First Student loan instalment drops into your bank account the temptation can be too much. Money that should be spent on rent, food and books goes another stuff. For matt that money sparked an addiction that would take years to get a handle on. I was at university, and i had maxed out numerous overd rafts, student loans, all the money i could get my hands on went into the machines. And one day i lost about two and a half thousand pounds, just on the machines. And i came very close to taking my own life at that point, i didnt really see a way out. Didnt have any money, didnt have access to any money. Thankfully i was able to get help. But yeah, that was a pretty awful point, that was probably what i would call a rock bottom. Matt isnt alone. A poll by the Gambling Commission suggests three out of five students have gambled in the last four weeks. And nearly 10 of them said they were in debt as a result. I think its really important that universities are aware of the problem within their own university, like how many of their students are addicted and aware of how big a problem it is and what therefore needs to address it, the level of resources that are needed. Matt got help and now supports others with similar addiction issues. Hello, how are you. Good to see you. Yeah, you too. Today hes meeting a 24 year old who got into gambling at uni. He wants to stay anonymous as his employer doesnt know about his past. It went from, you know, spending a few days, you know, coming home after lectures and going onto my laptop, to suddenly saying no to going out with friends, maybe saying no to going to uni. I didnt attend many lectures because instead i wanted to stay at home and gamble, really. It became quite a key aspect of my life, really. I then lost all the money that i had which at that stage was about £900 and then i opened an overdraft with my bank. When i went to uni i tried my best to stay out of it and i did manage it for a few weeks. Bu there was a betting shop right next to the campus, and i had to walk past it every day and eventually i gave in. You lose the concept of value, you lose the concept of time as well. I had so many days where id start, id get home from a lecture or something and id go onto my laptop and before i knew it it was 3am and id spent the last 12 hours or something just sat at my laptop. I didnt eat, i didnt drink, i didnt really function. Just the adrenaline. Yeah, just the adrenaline. Just pumped. And it didnt do my physical health at all any good. It didnt do my Mental Health any good. Did it affect your degree . Ahem, yeah. For my final yea of uni, thats when it got really bad. Over the summer, i basically blew most of the money that id inherited, it was about £10,000. And i then spent the next year, because id kind have said i was going to save, i made it my mission for my next year to make it all back. But to do it covertly. There is a concern that some casinos are actively targeting students. If you take a quick look online and its easy to find examples of them doing things like setting up stalls at fresher fairs, pushing all student poker leagues and things like offering free drinks to students who come into casinos and discounts as well. This kind of marketing is actually perfectly legal but what the anti gambling groups want is for universities to clamp down on it. Do you think there are aspects of being at university that make people more susceptible to gambling . You have cash for the first time. Yes, absolutely. I think you can be very vulnerable. I think you go from a place of structure, often if you come from school or elsewhere you come from a place of structure, yes, you might have worked beforehand and had a bit of money to spend, but you have, suddenly you are at uni and you have maybe, you know, depending on your course, but you can have as little as six hours contact time a week. And the rest of the time you are expected to be independent and to be working a lot of the time. But with that comes isolation, maybe. I have never budgeted before and money was a whole new concept to me. I hadnt worked before i went to uni. I went to uni and suddenly i turned up and you know, it was £1,000 straight in your bank. And with that comes the culture of going to the casino after a night out. What was the Tipping Point where you said, im not going to gamble any more . The Tipping Point was, i think, when it came to the end of what was meant to be my final year. And i realised, im going to get almost caught, i have nothing to show for it, im not going to graduate. I hadnt written any piece of work, and i hadnt attended a single lecture. So id had this year of, you know, or longer than a year, actually, ofjust creating these deep webs and lies and ijust told everyone, open and honest, and it was not easy. It was not easy. My family knew i gambled, but they knew it was bad, actually, to be fair. They didnt know quite how bad it was. Because it got a lot worse at uni. I felt quite sorry for my family because its quite difficult to know what to do with a gambling addict. I went to ga meetings for a while and i did find some help and the help i found was knowing that im not alone. Because with gambling there is a pride issue, where you feel like youve been. You feel like youve been foolish and silly and stuff. Yeah, you cant believe what youve done, necessarily. Gambling, in one single day you can blow your entire life savings. You can blow everything because the access to spending that much money is available, which can be very dangerous. Of course for most students, a few pounds on a football match or a late night session in a casino is just part of university life. But the worry is that for some, the temptations on offer are simply too much. University is very powerful in terms of lobbying and lobbying some of these Gambling Companies to reduce the maximum stay, fixed odd betting terminals or increased protection online. And not allow Gambling Companies to come on to campus and market to the students. So i think theres a lot they can do. Ijust hope they realise that it is a bigger problem than perhaps they thought. If you are a student who gambles, get in touch in the usual ways. 0lly says we used to drink at our local casino in uni. It wasnt long before i lost £2,000 on the odd game. Nick says, im 26. Im a compulsive gambler. Gambling destroyed me last year. I gambled £70,000 between march and the beginning of december. I was two weeks away from taking my own life. I was saved by my partner finding out and supporting me through my daughters first christmas. I have my family by my side, im just over nine months gambling free. We asked the association of british bookmakers to join us but they declined to comment. We can speak to robbie young from the National Union of students, paul buck from a Gambling Support Group called epic, they run gambling harm prevention programmes in universities and colleges and ben haden from the Gambling Commission. Welcome all of you. How much of a problem, ben, do you think gambling is, do you say gambling is amongst students . So our Research Shows us in the 16 to 2a age group that you are, the rate of problem gambling or people at risk of problem gambling is double that of problem gambling is double that of all adults. So we have done research as part of our role to make sure that gambling is safe for consumer with the Student Group and what that has shown us is the exa m ples what that has shown us is the examples that we have seen on your vt are you know these people u nfortu nately a re vt are you know these people unfortunately are not alone. So, about two in three students actually gamble. 0f about two in three students actually gamble. Of that number, you have got about one in four which have some gambling related debt and of that number you have got a 4 of a reasonable level of debt as youve talked about and i think while the numbers are small, what it shows is us numbers are small, what it shows is us is that the problem does exist and therefore, we are really keen that as we move into freshers week and there is a fresh group of stu d e nts and there is a fresh group of students who are starting university for the first time, that the message is got out to them about the risks that are around gambling and the help they can receive if they ever get into problems. Robbie, as a representative of the nus, do you think there are many 18 year olds who are about to go to uni who dont know the risks of gambling . We are shocked to hear of this, but not surprised. Students are getting less money to go to university so they are looking for more and safeways to make money. If you are 18 and you see the gambling on the show and it is glamourised and youre going to go and gamble, but when you dont have the money, youre going to be spending your rent money and your food money and we are not surprised that this is going on. Do you think there are 18 year olds who realise if you gamble you can lose as well as win . Yeah, i do. Do you think they are going to win every time . Intelligent 18 year olds who are off to uni . You watch films and you see people striking it lucky. You are probably going for adverse to take risks. We know that and i think gambling is one of the risks. We need to be better at clamping down oii need to be better at clamping down on this. We will talk about Gambling Companies being allowed on to campus and reducing the maximum stake. Paul, from your point of view, you are from the support group called epic, you run the gambling harm prevention programmes on campuses. Is it prevention programmes on campuses. Isita prevention programmes on campuses. Is it a big deal . It is a big deal, victoria and thank you for having me oii. Victoria and thank you for having me on. We pride ourselves on working across what are the highest levels sectors for problem gambling and gambling related harm. Those were always financial, the armed forces and criminaljustice. Always financial, the armed forces and criminal justice. Because always financial, the armed forces and criminaljustice. Because of the work were doing with this, the england cricket team, we were asked to start going into universities because it is such a rising issue. We collected anonymous data and we ask them how often do you gamble and whether they think it can be problematic and the figures were getting from students, thats16 and 17 year old students and also 18 year old students at universities, they actually dont understand it is an issue even as much as the high risk sectors and it is probably the highest risk sector of all. Right. 0k, is probably the highest risk sector of all. Right. Ok, thats interesting. Let me show you this poster if i may. Were going to bring it on this plasma here. Right, so bring it on this plasma here. Right, so it is targeting students. Uk student poker league. Poker league £1,000 on offer every month and you can read for yourself the information thats on there. Are you saying that Grosvenor Casinos should not be targeting stu d e nts casinos should not be targeting students in that way . We would expect Grosvenor Casinos to be targeting students in a socially responsible way. Is that socially responsible . I cant see all of the detail, but we would expect it to be product advertised in a balance way. So there is a gambling advertising code which is regulated by the asa and the key things that they are looking to see is to make sure that gambling is not being shown as a, you know, as a way out of debt or a way to make money. That it is not a way to make money. That it is not a way out of loneliness or depression for some people and that bluntly that it for some people and that bluntly thatitis for some people and that bluntly that it is not the key part of their lives. That, you know, it doesnt come above friends and family. Yes, it is legal to advertise and it can be, you know, a lot of people gamble safely, but we would expect it to be donein safely, but we would expect it to be done ina safely, but we would expect it to be done in a socially responsible way. Robbie, is that socially responsible . We would like to see grosvenor talking about the risk of debt and the fact that youre not going to win every time. Thats an exciting poker league. People like to go to each others houses and play poker, but when you are going toa play poker, but when you are going to a casino it is nods adds fun as being ata to a casino it is nods adds fun as being at a friends house. We would like to see risk on the poster. Grosvenor casinos say, we take issues relating to problem gambling very seriously. We pride ourselves on taking a proactive approach to the issue. With that in mind, we would never encourage anyone to use casinos or gambling as a source of income or as a way of escaping debt. In conjunction with University Unions and societies, we do undertake some activity which communicates directly with students but this is focused around Job Opportunities, entertainment, food and beverage and student poker societies and we are confident that this is done in a responsible way. Should Gambling Companies be banned from university come pusz . There needs to be had the conversation about what gambling can lead to for students. Lets say they are there for a jobs fair. They are there for theJob Opportunities for a jobs fair. They are there for the Job Opportunities in the world of gambling. At that point are you saying they should, what, remind 21 year olds when they have graduated that gambling can be bad for you . I think what they need to do on campus, have a fair, different than saying, come and spend your money with us, whether you have it or not. I think that the conversation we need to have, about how these people advertise on campus and to students. 0k, paul, what would be your review in terms of Gambling Companies going onto campuses . I dont think it should be encouraged, and we have to be aware that students will not have had any education around gambling. It is not part of the curriculum or anything, so they go away to university, and dont forget this is the first text savvy generation, brought up on social gaming, free bet offers and so on, but they will not have education as to the dangers, so i think it needs to be tackled preuniversity, so that stu d e nts tackled preuniversity, so that students going off, into the big wide world, or a university, so to be hit by a Gambling Company into the first week at university and they have not had any education or informed decisions, it is potentially quite dangerous. Lets read in some comments from people watching around the country. Peter says, why shouldnt businesses approached students . What part of being 18 and a student does count as being 18 and a student does count as being an adult and . From dave, stu d e nts being an adult and . From dave, students are no different to anyone else. Young, old, people have gambling addictions. Ben says i gambled £15,000 in one week, it was very depressing. Another one, stu d e nts very depressing. Another one, students being saturated by Advertising Properties and so on. If you limit the ads and the promos you may well notice a difference. Thank you, all. Thank you very much for coming in. Ben from the Gambling Commission, robbie from the nus, and then, thank you. Commission, robbie from the nus, and paul, thank you. Unite leader Len Mccluskey is the latest senior union figure to say walkouts are likely. He said the unions would take stronger action to oppose the wage cap on public workers. Mr mccluskey told the today programme he was prepared to defy legal requirements that strike action needed to be approved by a ballot with a turnout of more than 50 . Thats a summary of the latest bbc news more at 10. Breaking news, the latest inflation figures are out. Ben thompsons here. Remind us what inflation is. How quickly prices are going up, so the things we buy in the supermarkets, bars and restaurants, a measure of how quickly those prices are going up, and it is interesting. They were not expected to move a huge amount today but that has come in in the last few minutes, and the measures we look at the show prices are going up we look at the show prices are going up by we look at the show prices are going up by almost 3 , 2. 9 , sort of the same as what we saw at the start of the year, which was the peak. April and may, we saw prices starting to rise. Why . Why do we care . No, we know why we care, but why are they going up . Two reasons, firstly the exchange rate, and we know the pound fell to record lows against things like the euro and the dollar, and that was as a result of the brexit wrote, and that means exporters, people who imports off, they are finding it more expensive, and people who export are doing quite well, but a few if you think of the things we buy day to day, clothes, shoes, food, a lot of that is imported and a lot of that has gone up in pounds so that is why that number has risen so quickly. But going back to that question of why we care, of course we care because it is what we are paying every day, but also our wages are not giving up. The average wage is going up by just not giving up. The average wage is going up byjust 2 and prices by 3 , so that means in pockets we feel a bit worse off. So that figure, 2. 9 , not what they were expecting. We were thinking it might stay pretty steady or indeed fall, but it is actor coming in much higher. Thank you, ben. Heres some sport now with 0lly. Thank you, victoria. West ham are off the bottom of the premier league with their first points, two score macs coming in the last 20 minutes against huddersfield. And a world live in the first of the t20 matches in lahore today, the most high profile match in the country since the attack in the country on the Sri Lankan Team eight years ago. That is all you sport for now. I will be back with more later. Thank you. The government has cleared its first parliamentary hurdle en route to brexit. Mps voted to allow the withdrawal bill to move to its next stage by 326 votes to 290 despite critics warning it represents a power grab by ministers. If ive got an opportunity to support a government bill that says European Union withdrawal bill, then im going to support it tonight and i hope other members do. Because what it does it ends the European Union legislation and control over this house, when we leave. And thats what it primarily does. I will not support this bill, because it threatens a fundamental principle of british democracy namely the supremacy of parliament and the division of powers and gives sweeping powers to government ministers and bureaucrats. It pretends to bring back power to this country, but it actually represents the biggest peacetime power grab by the executive over the legislature, by the government over parliament, in 100 years. The government, i say, Treat Parliament with respect and be open to constructive suggestions to improve the bill. I will work with others to improve this bill, but tonight i cannot vote to block this bill and i shall be abstaining to allow the bill to be further discussed and amended. What weve seen, so far, is a tory government that wants to turn its back on the eu happily talking about a no deal situation that will be devastating forjobs and the economy. This approach of ourselves alone against the world is not one that i can possibly endorse. The arguments have been made against this bill, which say that this is a power grab. It is quite clear from what ministers have said, from what the legislature has said, from restrictions placed on ministers, that that is not the case. The bill paves the way for converting thousands of eu laws and regulations into uk legislation. Prime minister theresa may says it offers certainty and clarity but labour described it as an affront to parliamentary democracy. Well, lets discuss all that and what happens now with labour mp Jenny Chapman who is a brexit spokesperson for the party and conservative mp nadhim zahawi. And, for coming in. Several of your collea g u es and, for coming in. Several of your colleagues backed the government and divide europe leaderJeremy Corbyn. Why do you think they did that . L small number did. I think the seventh added, i could have told you a week ago that is what they were going to do, that is what you get with breaks of votes. No big surprise there. It is what you get. No point getting upset about it. Brexit was supposed to be taking back control of our laws, but this gives all the power to the government, not parliament. You cant be happy with that . Sorry, im going to ask you. I wasnt asking you, i was asking jenny. Going to ask you. I wasnt asking you, i was asking jennylj going to ask you. I wasnt asking you, i was asking jenny. I were absolutely deal with both. Yesterday are very important point was made on radio for, if you block this bill, it will have a catastrophic impact on british business, because this bill adopts all eu regulations into businesses, so in my constituency, businesses, so in my constituency, businesses can know with certainty that if this bill gets through the same rules will apply to them in the uk as it does in the eu. That is true. It also gives ministers incredible power. Your point, yes, it does, ministers have said they will look at this at Committee Stage and amendments will be looked at very seriously. 0r and amendments will be looked at very seriously. Or i would say to the labour party, and i think trying to gamble with the british economy, thank goodness it didnt work all that i would say. For the last seven years i have been a member of parliament we have an eu rules, directives coming to parliament and we had no ability to debate or amend them. We simply see them through because eu bureaucrats tell us we have to. Ballmac, that is not why. Its the process parliament decided upon. There enough, but all lam seeing decided upon. There enough, but all i am seeing decided upon. There enough, but all lam seeing no, that is decided upon. There enough, but all i am seeing no, that is not why. Parliamentarians elected every five years at the general election, and the British Public can decide which party they want to actually run the country, and if they feel that government is abusing its power as they can throw it out. We could never throw out a european bureaucrat, so this idea that all of a sudden labour has discovered parliamentary democracy. Let me ask you about your party because quite a few of your colleagues do wa nt quite a few of your colleagues do want changes to this bill as it carries on its journey through parliament, including mps, including explicitly being in there that in thes have a final vote on the brexit deal. That was tabled by 12 conservative mps. Do you want to see that explicitly in this bill . |j that explicitly in this bill . think we should look at all amendment very seriously, and i think the government has made that very clear. What is your view on that . My view is someone who came from the world of business into politics, and that is that if your government is going to negotiate a good deal in the national interest, we need to back that government. To begin to hold it to ransom by somehow. For Goodness Sake by having parliament decide the final deal, what does that say to the other side . That the government does not have the mandate to negotiate . What is a poor deal . If the government side a poor deal there is general election and the public can decide, but the public give instruction to the government in 2016. If it is a poor instruction to the government in 2016. If it is a poor deal there will be a general election . Can we just remind ourselves what this bill is about . It is not about whether or not we leave the European Union. It is not even about on what terms with the European Union. This is about the European Union. This is about the parliamentary process. Now, we accept and we want there to be a smooth transition. We want the eu law on the uk statute book so we can get the smooth transition. There are any number of ways the government could have done this. But what we have chosen to do is to allow ministers to make any change to any law they like, any law, behind closed doors, without a vote, and we think that is unacceptable at the best of times, but actually when you have a minority government without a majority, then that is fundamentally wrong, and you dont need to do it that way to get a brexit, so why are the government choosing to do it that way . Right, well, it has been passed with the help of some of your colleagues. Its second reading. Yes, still some stages to go. But the amendments bidding down, that your collea g u es amendments bidding down, that your colleagues and conservatives want to add to this bill, do you agree yes, but the amendment put down. What this bill does, and theres nothing to say the government will use this power, but this bill allows the government to enact the entire article 50 negotiation without reference to anybody, not business, not the public, not the publics representatives. That is not taking back control. Sure, but what is labours brexit position today . In terms of. We want a transitional period. For a time limited arrangement because without that, nobody sensible thinks that you can get a full customs, you know, organised, that you can reform your immigration policy, that you can get your borders sorted out in time for march 2019. Nobody believes that. Jeremy corbyn seemed to suggest yesterday that we could be ina member of suggest yesterday that we could be in a member of the Single Market indefinitely. No, thats not what he said. We are talking about transitional period which we need. He said it was an ongoing discussion. Well, of course it is. It is subject to negotiation. We are clear on Free Movement. Nadinejust asked be Free Movement. We have been very, very clear on that. After we leave and weve completed the transitional period Free Movement ends and there is a change. In this country, for the first time in a very long time, needs to have its own immigration policy and that is something that we ought to be debating and that should be really what were discussing in parliament, not this power grab by ministers. This bill, as we know, brings overall the eu regulations into uk law. Which eu laws or regulations would you like to see, notjust transferred, but overturned, scrapped . Well, at the moment i dont want to see anything scrapped. You are happy with all eu laws and regulations . We want the ability to have a smooth exit. understand that. Looking ahead, all the eu laws which you feel, which you have said have been imposed on you have said have been imposed on you over the years without mps being able to do anything about it. Which one would you get rid of . able to do anything about it. Which one would you get rid of . I want to adapt all eu legislation, i want to say to my Business Community who employ hundreds of thousands of people in Stratford Upon Avon that you can carry on doing business. So why are you giving yourselves the powers to abolish the laws if you are not intent to use them. powers to abolish the laws if you are not intent to use them. I am a backbencher and i will be scrutinising. You are here on their behalf today. Im here on behalf of the people of Stratford Upon Avon. I will be scrutinising this bill. Is there nothing that you think of that you are desperate to dump from eu law . This is the time for us to make sure. Im not asking about the future. In the future thinking ahead, there would be a day when you think we can get rid of that, because i hate that had eu law. asked the question. Let me give you an example. At the moment local government has to advertise its tenders through the european journal. Through the european journal . It is a european publication. So, clearly, that particular law will become a nonsense when we come out of the European Union. What you want is local government to advertise it in britishjournals. Local government to advertise it in british journals. Is that . Im giving you an example of the detail. The reality is what we want is to send a message to business. Today business women and men waking up, good news. Labour tried to ki cosh it. A viewer says, your programme is aiding the conservatives as usual. Pathetic lies being told over brexit and the powers of parliament. Lies. Lies. Another viewer says, nadine dropping in sound bite after sound bite. Mike says, what is an affront to democracy is the labour party back tracking on the views of the people. Eddie says, it seems some mps dont get democracy, those who voted against last nights bill are traitors. Thank you for coming on the programme. A group of aid workers from team rubicon are heading to antigua to help with the relief effort. Theyll be providing medical and search and rescue support and will be flying out from Gatwick Airport shortly. Vishala sri pathma is there. Hi there. Thats right, so we have been talking to the team that are heading out this morning to an teeing go ga. They are hoping to help out with the relief efforts over there. There is a team of 11 of them. Earlier i caught up withjosh and doug. Iasked them. Earlier i caught up withjosh and doug. I asked them about how they are hoping to help out there and what they are hoping to achieve. So we are an assessment team. We are going to deploy out to antigua. We will partner with organisations out there and then we will move into areas that perhaps others havent using the skills that weve got and that will allow us to gather information and feed that information and feed that information back it our teams and for the United Nations information sharing and that allows us to prioritise where we focus our relief efforts. You are hoping to gather information to help out other relief groups there and direct them to areas of concern. Doug, you have been on a similar trip before. You we re been on a similar trip before. You were in haiti last year. What kind of skills have you learnt from there and what similarities are there . So, this will be different to haiti. In haiti i was part of the second wave. So we were continuing the efforts that had already been under taken there. The initial efforts under taken there. The initial efforts under ta ken were clearance there. The initial efforts under taken were clearance and reconstruction. This time were going out much earlier and because the picture looks much more vague at this stage. What were trying to do is collect information. Once we have that information, we will try and identify opportunities that we can help and best assist and collaborate with the people in the country. So that was doug and josh. They are both hoping to help from the logistics side of things and also about the strategy, how these houses and businesses in antigua can help get back on their feet again. They are there until the end of next week. Victoria. Thank you. Its two years sinceJeremy Corbyn became leader of the labour party. Well be looking at his time as leader so far and what it means for the party. How do you turn round a Failing School . And how do you get buy in from parents . The new head of one failing secondary school has come in for some stick after introducing strict new rules such as banning mobile phones and telling pupils to be in bed by 9. 30pm to improve pupil performance. Pupils who say they feel sick during classes will be given a bucket to throw up in. But Great YarmouthCharter Academy has some of the worst gcse results in the country, so shouldnt parents back any measures to turn it round . The headteacher of that particular school wasnt able tojoin us this morning. Lets speak to kevin and emma seal. Their daughterjust started at the school as a new year 7 student. They were so appalled at the rules, they started a Facebook Group for worried parents that has had hundreds of subscribers. Gail smith, who has three children at the school two of which started this week and she says shes encouraged by the new changes. Tom bennett is the governments School Behaviour tsar. Brian walkerjoins us from nottingham. Hes head teacher at west park school in derby and says rules like banning smoking and putting pictures of pupils who have detention on screens across the school helped improve success at his school. Im going to read you what your head has said. This is barry smith. In a typical class of 30 pupils, 21 pupils left the School Without even a pass in english and maths as the headmaster of Charter Academy i cannot, i will not, allow the indiscipline, the disrespect, the failure, the bullying, the truancy and the lack of parental support, that were all a part of daily life at the former high school to continue. Whats wrong with that . That sounds good. It is not that were up in arms about. It is the way he was speaking to the year 7 children who came in on their own on the wednesday last week, he had them lined up before School Started outside, not on school property, shouting at them and getting them lined up. They need to be lined up. Bits of their uniform. He was doing a uniform inspection. Not all the children were there. This was at 8. 20am or 815am. He was shouting at the children and it is the first time ive met him, it is the first time ive met him, it is the first time any of us met him. He was just appointed a week before this, i think. Was just appointed a week before this, ithink. And he was was just appointed a week before this, i think. And he was shaking childrens hands this, i think. And he was shaking child rens hands and this, i think. And he was shaking childrens hands and introducing himself to them, but he was doing it in an army way. Emma, were you not happy . Not at all. Even though wzfggfi in ctrtfsgfi in; he ,. he shook| siszfigfi in g he shook| staffing in g he shook| staffing introduced past. He shook hands and introduced himself. But it was the way he came about and spoke to the children. My daughter was petrified the day she came home that day. She had tears in her eyes going into that schoolment she wasnt expect that. They are aged ten and 11 going into that high school, they are going in with excitement, then to have someone we never met and no one knew about it and he was going up to the kids and he was in their faces, right in their faces, shouting at them. Let me bring in gayle wilson. Two of your children started this week. You have a different view, i think . You are encouraged by the changes. . Im encouraged by the changes that i have seen in the classroom and inside the school. On that wednesday it was very regimental and although i dont agree with some of the things that he is doing, by touring the school for the past few days i have seen happy children inside the school. Brian walker, you are head ofa school. Brian walker, you are head of a secondary school. In terms of strict rules like it sounds like Charter Academy are introducing, is that the way to begin turning a Failing School around . That the way to begin turning a Failing School around . Its good for any school. I wouldnt necessarily call them strict rules. They are rules that need to be adhered to to make a Successful School and what mr smith is doing there, i dont know the details of it, but from what i do know, good luck to him. Tom bennett, the governments behaviour tsar what would you say about the approach . A lot of the rules are actually utterly common place. I have seen a lot of schools that tried to turn themselves around. Who would be a headteacher these days . It is one of the hardestjobs you can get. If you try and turn a school around, you get publicly shamed in the press. What i find interesting is that you will get publicly shamed for a school where the results are terribly low and children are being failed that way, but when somebody tries to make a school more strict, thats when we see these things hit the press. Almost everything that i have read about it and i have only read about it in the press seems utterly common place amongst headteachers who turn around challenging schools. Brian walker this sort of regimental approach, does it have to be like that . Pretty well, yes. There has to be for outstanding schools a high level of internal consistency in everything thats done and a clarity of expectation, high standards in everything. We have to be very, very clear and explicit in it and in that circumstance it means that children can thrive. We can spot their skills and aptitudes and nurture them. Its because a system is so clear that it enables the teaching to go on in an atmosphere of learning and endeavour rather than confrontation. My teachers dont get themselves involved in that whatsoever. Subsequently, we dont have a recruitment problem and we have outstanding results. Emma, kelvin, iwill outstanding results. Emma, kelvin, i will read outstanding results. Emma, kelvin, iwill read more outstanding results. Emma, kelvin, i will read more from the rules. If you slouch, interrupt, talk, pick up your pen or open a book before you receive the signal, if you turn around, if you nudge your friend, if you turn around, if you nudge yourfriend, if if you turn around, if you nudge your friend, if you if you turn around, if you nudge yourfriend, if you make if you turn around, if you nudge your friend, if you make eye contact with your friend, if you look anywhere apart from at your teacher, the board on your work, you will be punished. Disgusting. His whole rule book is about punishment. Children with will not work in groups. Children will be in bed by 9. 30pm. They will have an hour and a half of homework. They will not go on social media when they leave school. What if within four years this school becomes an outstanding school. This trust took over an area in norwich. Let me ask you about Charter Academy. The same rules they are introducing here and that failed. That went down and they didnt have the same resources as what, sorry, they had more resources thanlor mouth have got. If the headteacher succeeds. Well, the children come out there with any ability to work in a group . Everybody works, when you go for a job they ask you how do you succeed in the workplace working as a group . Is that more important than getting maths and english gcse . Some sort of gcses that when they leave school, of course, they are going to be able to learn in this school. They will do, but when hes shouting at them constantly. Why should you get a detention for picking a pen up . He has gone too far in the discipline. Thank you both. Thank you. Thank you, 0lly. If youre pregnant its ok to have a drink every now and then. A group of researchers has found that government guidance which says pregnant women should drink no alcohol is based on evidence that is generally weak. Over the last few years advice to pregnant women has been contradictory. So what should they believe . We can speak now to dr luisa zuccolo, who co led the study. She joins us from bristol. And in the studio we have carmel lloyd, head of education at the Royal College of midwives and clare murphy from the british pregnancy advisory service. And clare murphy from the british we and clare murphy from the british are also joined b didnt we are also joined by a mum who didnt drink at all during her pregnancy. Well start with you, doctor luisa zuccolo. What would you advise on women drinking during pregnancy . Welcomer the advice still stands, so the Advisory Board has changed the advice to women trying to become pregnant and being pregnant from january 2015 and now recommend staying off alcohol completely. But you say you have looked at all the reports and all the research and the evidence that leads to that guidance about abs staining is generally weak. Yes, so when we set out to do our studies of studies about abs staining is generally weak. When we looked at this particular research questioning, low level of drinking, we are talking about up to two medium sized glasses of wine per week are two paints of beer per week. Unfortunately what we found is that very few studies looked at this question, so we find ourselves in a really tricky situation, we dont have much to grind. That is why we suggest that given that we know moderate drinking is definitely harmful for the baby, heavy moderate drinking is definitely harmfulfor the baby, heavy drinking is even more harmfulfor the baby, we recommend keeping to the government advice on the basis of it is better to be safe than sorry, which is also called the precautionary principle. Right, it makes you wonder why the government change their advice. The chief medical adviser to the government changed advice last to advocate total abstinence. Yes, i am very lucky myjob is as a scientist, and asa very lucky myjob is as a scientist, and as a scientist what we do is produce, collate and interpret the evidence, and then we ought to communicate it to policymakers. Those in charge of formulating the Public Health message, they face a whole different set of challenges and they have a much tougherjob than me. But it is to be understood and remembered by the public that there is more to Public Health advice than just evidence, so evidence is one ingredient of Public Health advice, but there could be other factors suggested. 0k. Do you accept that, carmel lloyd, that Public Health has other factors, not just about the evidence . Public Health has other factors, not just about the evidence . I think thatis just about the evidence . I think that is true. When you are caring for people you always look at the whole range of evidence, and in particular at the individual, so i think it is about the individualisation of this information, so you have to look at each woman as an individual, and ta ke each woman as an individual, and take her circumstance and then look at that circumstantial and you advise accordingly. All right. Clare, what would your advice be to pregnant women watching right now . think what is really good about this study, it kind of inject a bit of common sense into what i think has been quite a hysterical discussion about alcohol and pregnancy. There really isnt any evidence that low levels of Alcohol Consumption can cause harm during pregnancy. What i liked about the study, i think it is really important that, you know, we trust women with the information. We are not saying this is definitive, but we are saying this is the state of evidence. I think it is really important actually that Public Health messages dont overstate what we know, and that we trust women to understand the evidence. Do you think the government advice is overstating it . About total abstinence . The move from the chief medical officer to advocate abstinence is not based on the evidence, and i dont think there is good evidence to shift to that message. But in terms of a clear definitive message, that was one. Yes, of course. But it then begs the question, to what extent can we trust women to make their own judgments about the evidence and to make the decisions that they think are right for them . Make the decisions that they think are right forthem . For some make the decisions that they think are right for them . For some women that will be, do you know what, on a friday night id like to come home and have a glass of wine and unwind, and have a glass of wine and unwind, andl and have a glass of wine and unwind, and i think it is problematic when we start making problems of that for women, because people dont stop being women, womens door to stop being women, womens door to stop being people because they are pregnant. Abbey says i believe giving your child the best possible is a priority. It is easy not to drink which i was pleased. When you are the person that your baby or child relies on to ensure they have a Healthy Lifestyle then surely you wa nt to Healthy Lifestyle then surely you want to fulfil this. Jean says, alcohol during pregnancy surely for the sake of your baby you can go without an alcoholic drink for nine months. Kathy says, i drank the odd glass of wine. I have had three babies who turned out to be successful people. Congratulations on being pregnant with your second child. Have you had the odd drink or two . Child. Have you had the odd drink or two . No, i didnt have any drinks with my drinks with my first pregnancy and im not intending to have any drinks with this pregnancy either. When you are not pregnant, would you enjoy a glass of wine . Yes. The reason for total abstinence is from your point of view is what . It is just having a glass of wine, it could have some impact on the brain of the baby. So, we all know that in pregnancy the baby is developing during the whole time. So if you have an odd glass of wine it may have an impact. So my point is, you give your baby, your five month old a glass of wine, probably not. So why would you drink it . I think the study may have shown there is no impact on a newborn baby, but we dont know what will happen in the future whether a child has any effects from the alcohol that was drunk during the pregnancy. We know that as the doctor was telling us the evidence suggests that a drink or two would not have the kind of harm that youve described. Is that right, doctor . Well, thank you for allowing me to Say Something else. I would like to add there is a common misunderstanding here as to what the study found and no evidence doesnt mean no effect. So we often find that there is very, very few studies looking at this aspect. It doesnt mean that we found, it is very different from finding lots and lots of studies all suggesting that some alcohol is safe. So we havent found that alcohol is safe and we havent found that alcohol has a dramatic, a level so small of alcohol has a dramatic effects on babies and children later on. So we did look at over 30 different outcomes both in the short term, so for example, premature delivery, babies coming early and coming small. And also we looked at longer term outcomes such as iq and conditioning and how well they do at school later on and behavioural aspects which are so important for foetal alcohol syndrome for high levels of drinking. And what we found is for most of these things we were interested in, there werent any studies, there was such few stud chris that we cant say anything meaningful. It doesnt mean that it is safe. It is a very different message. Thank you for that clarification. I stand corrected. Let me bring in anna. She is in manchester. She has an donted child and the child has foetal alcohol syndrome. Anna, we are grateful that you can talk to us. Alcohol foetal syndrome is when a mum has drunk an awful lot during pregnancy. Tell us about the impact on your child. Thank you very much for having me on. I want to be clear that my son has something called foetal alcohol spectrum disorder. 0k. And thats very different, well, it is not very different, but it is linked from foetal alcohol syndrome and it is something thats really not known about. There is very little awareness, but in fact, it is known to be more common than autism. So, its something that it was really hidden, but it is known to also studies have shown it affects 75 of adopted children. The uk is the fourth worst country in the world in cases of disability due to drinking in pregnancy and i can testify to the damage that it causes. So, of course, probably one or two, you know, the odd drink in pregnancy probably wont cause harm, but what does cause harm is the vague mixed m essa g es does cause harm is the vague mixed messages about it. Right. There is also stud chris that show that middle class women are increasingly having children with behavioural problems affected by drinking in pregnancy and i think this is because of the mixed messages. Why is it that it that smoking is forbidden in pregnancy. I went into hospital recently and there was a banner saying no smoking in pregnancy. Drinking on the other hand, causes organic brain injury. Its hand, causes organic brain injury. Its a toxic poison. If you drink, the baby drinks, and my son is four and a half years old. We have got him diagnosed. We did a lot of research and knew a lot about it. Went Health Clinician was that information. Without the damage you could see what he could be. It causes aggressive violent outbursts. He has got to have one on one support at school. He will probably, most possibly, end up having to go toa most possibly, end up having to go to a Specialist School as a lot of children with this condition do. I want to bring in clare murphy. Do you agree from the british pregnancy service, with anna, that mixed m essa g es service, with anna, that mixed messages are harmful . What we need is to ensure we have very good support for women who are struggling with alcohol problems. Sure. Thats a different answer to a different question. Do you think the mixed messages are harmful to pregnant women . No, i dont think the mixed messages are harmful. I think what is harmful is overstating evidence. I think what it does is it makes women doubt Public Health messages when they know that the evidence behind them isnt sound. I think what health care professionals, you know, Public Health officials need to build a Good Relationship with women. We need to make sure that we are conveying evidence based information that we are trusting women to make their own choices about what is best for them and their own choices about what is best forthem andl their own choices about what is best for them and i dont think it sets us down the right path when we start overstating evidence saying things about the evidence that cant be substantiated. Thank you all. Thank you very much. Good luck with the pregnancy. Thank you. People who moved out of their homes in the florida keys are being urged not to return. The governor of florida rick scott says the devastation caused there by Hurricane Irma is horrible. The Us Government says 10,000 people who had stayed in their home in the keys may now need to be rescued. About 6. 5 million homes in florida, two thirds of the total, are without power. Nearly a0 people have died as a result of the storm, across the caribbean and the us. Foreign secretary borisjohnson is travelling to the caribbean to visit British Overseas Territories devastated by Hurricane Irma. Lets talk now to cara kesling. She went into labour in the middle of the hurricane in florida. Ben huckerby is a british tourist stuck in cuba, Giovanni Zambello is helping co ordinate the relief effort for the british red cross, and rahul singh is from global medic, a charity in canada which is providing sanitation to some of the worst affected caribbean islands. Kara, congratulations. There is your little baby. Tell us more about the birth and what happened . So, we actually fled the keys on tuesday night because we had a doctors appointment on wednesday morning to check on the status of the baby which was my due date, 6th september. About an hour after leaving the doctor i started to go into labour. So, the next morning, we found ourselves at the hospital in labourand we found ourselves at the hospital in labour and they admitted us and that night we had our baby girl, at 10. A7pm. Well, congratulations. You make it sound really quite non dramatic, but i think it was probably a little bit more dramatic than that, is that fair . Yes. Definitely more dramatic than that because we had our dog at the hotel room actually and so, i had to spend the first night alone in the hospital which was pretty intense, you know, being a new mum and then of course, the next day, we we re and then of course, the next day, we were trying to get ourselves discharged early. I guess that was saturday morning, we were trying to get ourselves discharged early and just, you know, they kept stalling, the dischargers were like we have got to get out here so we can get to the hotel safely. And then thats when they finally did discharge us. It was starting to get windy and we we re it was starting to get windy and we were getting some gusts of rain and wind and the sheriffs were outside the building and they offered to escort us to the hotel and they helped us get her strapped in. That was quite a dayser because we had never strapped a baby into a car seat before and like new parents, we forgot to practise so the one sheriff assisted us to get her in safely and then finally once we figured out all that, we were escorted safely back to the hotel by them. Introduce us to your baby daughter and partner, i dont have your name, but congratulations . Thank you. My name is geoff. I will let her introduce our baby. This is niari storm. Ah. We went with a middle name that named her after her, would you call it add rend ture her, would you call it add rend ture her birth. We didnt want to go after irma, if she caused too much damage, irma, if irma caused too much damage we didnt want to recognise that one as her middle name so we went with something a little bit more vague. So storm. And yeah, we were really worried about it because you were talking about our current state of affairs really. We dont know the condition of our house. We dont have anyway of getting down there to find out the condition of our house. We are talking about the stranded people. I do know that some of the people have started communication, the ones that stayed, have started communicating outside and weve heard from a couple of them that theyre ok. We dont know about some areas and we dont know about some areas and we dont know about key west. It didnt get hit as hard as some areas from what i have heard and i havent been able to substantiate the this information yet. We dont know the status of where we live and they are not letting anybody into the key and we dont have substantial information about when we might be able to get back. I have a business down there. So, you know, we have both our home and our business and pretty much our whole life is down in the keys and we have no way of knowing whats going on. Luckily, you have your baby daughter with you so. Thats the most important thing. The reason we seemed so optimistic and happy is because were safe and she is safe and everybody made it through the storm ok and thank god we got out of there when we did because we beat there when we did because we beat the traffic because we wanted to come up and not be stuck in it and we have a lot of friends who got stuck in that. Stay with us while i bring in our other guest. Ben, hello, stuck in cuba, a british tourist, how are you ben . Yeah, ual good, thank you. Better now. So when do you think. Ican better now. So when do you think. I can barely hear you. Im going to come back to you ben in a minute. Giovanni, how are you . Thank you for having me. Thats all right. Helping co ordinate the relief effort for the british red cross. Tell us what kind of things you have been doing and where . So im currently deployed to antigua with the International Red cross. Im here to support antigua and Barbuda Red Cross Society in their response to Hurricane Irma that struck and particularly to the island of barbuda which i visited yesterday. So currently the whole population of barbuda, around 1600 people, they have been evacuated to the island of antigua. So we visited the island yesterday which is now, as i said, com pletely yesterday which is now, as i said, completely unhabited. The scenario is massive destruction. We estimated 95 of buildings have been either damaged or destroyed and the only inhabitants left are animals, live stock and pets left behind. Yeah, so that was, so there is no power. There is no Running Water on the island. Sorry to interrupt. Let me bring in someone who is working with a charity in canada which is trying to provide sanitation. How is that going . In an barbuda on the friday, and sint maarten to help with their water sint maarten to help with their water yes, it has been a tough slog. We got a team into barbuda on friday, and a team into sint maarten to help with the water purification. You talk about the devastation. How long will it take for people to rebuild . I can quote the president of the Antigua And Barbuda red cross, talking to the media the other day, and he said 3 5 years. What we know from a red cross perspective, we will be accompanying the affected population in the weeks and months to come. To meet their immediate needs and support them in their recovery process. We are talking about of course Health Support in the short term, Psychosocial Support for people who are kindly staying in shelters, and of course shelter, because as i was saying, buildings have been damaged and people have lost their homes, so they need to be able to rebuild. 0k, well, thank you. Who is that, rahul . Yes, respectfully we need to not focus on how we will rebuild and how long that will take, but we need to focus on what people need right now to stay alive. That is clean water, getting them food and shelter. These are the priorities. We have a drone team down in sint maarten flying mapping out that ireland, telling us what frauds are out, doing a comprehensive Damage Assessment mapping out the island. Telling us what roads are out. The level of information on the damage coming out, it reinforces how desperate people are just to stay alive and get through these early days. That is what we have to be focused on here. That is really fair, thank you for saying that. Thank you for coming on the programme. Rahul singh from global medic, a charity based in canada providing sanitation to some of the worst affected islands. And you heard from Giovanni Zambello as well, helping coordinate for the british red cross, and cara, jeff, and their baby daughter, thank you all so much. Still to come its two years sinceJeremy Corbyn beat the odds to become leader of the labour party well be speaking to some of those who support him. And well be looking at the rise in gambling among students which has left some in tens of thousands of debt. The latest News Headlines at 10 3aam with rachel. Good morning. Thats a summary of the latest news, join me for bbc live at 11 oclock. Thank you. Liz has e mailed on drinking and pregnancy, it is the same as smoking. Sometimes the haters of smoking, drinking, enjoyment, get away with blatant non truths. Ide male, i have an month old. Org barbuda e mail, i think it is selfish to harm your baby when it isnt necessary. Someone else, i cant believe money is being wasted on a study like this. I am shocked to hear one of your guests saying effectively it is 0k to drink while pregnant. I think this is sending the wrong message to potentially vulnerable mums to be. 0k, potentially vulnerable mums to be. Ok, here it is 0lly with their sport. A mans been arrested on suspicion of murder after the daughter of holby city actor john michie was found dead at bestival music festival. 25 year old Louella Michie was discovered in a wooded area at the site yesterday. Chi chi izundu is with me now. What we know so far . Officers were alerted yesterday and after searching a wooded area they discovered her body on the edge of the festival site. They arrested a 28 year old man on suspicion of murder and released a Police Statement saying to enable officers to conduct an interview under caution to help establish the full circumstances, Police Conducted a postmortem examination last night. We are awaiting those results. Just a quick overview of bestival. It is a quick overview of bestival. It is a four day festival, famed for having fancy dress costumes and fa ncy dress having fancy dress costumes and fancy dress events. The line up for this year included the xx, dizzy rascal. It was temporary evacuated for about an hour because of high winds. For the festival, for about an hour because of high winds. Forthe festival, Bestival Police are part of dorset police, theyissued police are part of dorset police, they issued a warning about a particular drug, a small blue tablet with a rolex logo on it and they had warned people to get rid of it because it contained unknown chemicals. And louellas father has released a statement. Yes, he confirmed it was her and said that he and his wife carol had asked for privacy and for the family to be respected at this time. In the Sun Newspaper he is quoted as saying, we lost our angel. It was not murder, they werejust we lost our angel. It was not murder, they were just friends. It was a tragic accident. Bestival has also released a statement effectively saying they are working with police in their own investigations. Now, if it was a hollywood film, audiences would find the storyline just too far fetched. An obscure, vegetarian, allotment owning mp known mainly for his life long opposition to war and Nuclear Weapons takes control of the labour party and comes within touching distance of becoming Prime Minister. That allotment owning mp is, of course, Jeremy Corbyn and it was two years ago today that he was elected leader of the labour party embarrassing commentators and pundits who predicted his demise and more importantly changing the Political Landscape in a way that seemed unthinkable to even his oldest friends and supporters. Jazz music plays. Thanks very much. Sorry to have kept you waiting at the start. I was struggling with trains and journeys, but we made it in the end, and i think the railway should be publicly owned. Laughter why is it, in britain today, the 100 richest people equal the total wealth of 30 of the population . That is fundamentally wrong. Ive got nothing against jeremy personally. But what i have got a problem with are his positioning and politics. I dont believe that is a politics that can win. I think its been caused by the financial crisis itself. The next quote, it will be my pleasure and honour to host an event in parliament where our friends from hezbollah will be speaking and ive also invited friends from hamas to come and speak, as well. Yes, i chaired a meeting discussing the future of the middle east and the middle east peace process. I have indeed met people with whom i profoundly disagree on many things, in order to try and bring about a peace process. I am therefore delighted to declare Jeremy Corbyn elected as leader of the labour party. Applause and cheering fantastic moment, fantastic mandate for change in britain. Fantastic enthusiasm for real democratic politics. I believe we have to vote to remain in order to defend investment, defend jobs, defend workers rights. I no longer had confidence in his leadership. We need a growth rate that would obviously continue to increase government income. I said explicitly that i would raise £13. 5 billion worth of extra taxes. And there will be some tax rises for those on very large incomes. Whatever your age or situation, people are under pressure, struggling to make ends meet. 0ur manifesto is for you. Big ben chimes and what were saying is the conservatives are the largest party. Note, they dont have an overall majority at this stage. Politics has changed, and politics isnt going back into the box where it was before. It is wrong, it is immoral and it is unnecessary that anyone should be sleeping on the streets. So, what would jc have to do to win the next general election . Lets speak to two people who support Jeremy Corbyn to varrying degrees. Maya goodfellow is a writer and commentatror who supported Jeremy Corbyn from the very beginning. And John Mcternan a former adviser to tony blair who once said this ofJeremy Corbyn and his supporters. And i would and mps who nominated Jeremy Corbyn to have a debate, they need their heads felt, i would say that the moronic mps who nominated Jeremy Corbyn. They are morons, right . When was that, john, remind us . That was when people lend their votes to nominate Jeremy Corbyn, when they had no intention of voting for him, and i do think it is paradoxical in the least to nominate somebody that you will not vote for and you dont believe should ever be Prime Minister of the country. But now do you think, thank goodness they did nominate him . Now i think we are living in a new reality. I certainly was of the view thatjeremy reality. I certainly was of the view that jeremy couldnt change. He changed. I was the view they didnt wa nt changed. I was the view they didnt want to win he won that he wanted to win control of the labour party and project of people like me, but actually with the alliance with jeremy, his support in momentum, the unions plus the work of moderate mps like alison mcgovern, labour did brilliantly at the last election, deprive the tories the majority. Perhaps did not do well enough. But that is because you have changed. He hasnt. But that is because you have changed. He hasnt. He has got lots better. People of me were critical his performance at pmqs. Critical of his performance at pmqs. Critical of his policy positions, but he basically has adopted ed milibands manifesto from 2010 and 2014 and delivered it much better. What does he need to do to win the next general election . Lets assume it is after a five year term of parliament, so in 2022 . What happens then . There are two matt keating. This is not just then . There are two matt keating. This is notjust about there are two key things. This is notjust aboutjeremy two key things. This is notjust about Jeremy Corbyn the two key things. This is notjust aboutJeremy Corbyn the man, so what we need to see is to continue to see that boldness with policies. They will have more time, so develop some of those ideas. Really important in all of this, it was notjust of those ideas. Really important in all of this, it was not just about Jeremy Corbyn or about the policies, it was about the way he infused people and those policies infused people. Do you think antiausterity will still be relevant in 2022 it is about the way he enthused people. I think it will still be important but it is also important to give people a sense of ownership, make them feel like they have some power in politics and i thinkJeremy Corbyn did that incredibly well. I think we need to continue to see a democratisation of the labour party. What does that mean in practical terms . Things like the mcdonnell amendment, the reduction of thresholds. If you want to get on the ballot for the next leadership contest, you have to reach a certain threshold within the parliamentary labour party. Do voters really care about stuff like that . Voters perhaps dont but in terms of the labour party being a democratic party. Sure, but to win an election you have to win over conservative voters and they would not care about the mcdonnell amendment. What do you thinkJeremy Corbyn and later have to do to be in with a chance of winning the next election . If you do this same you will get more of the same result, saw a tory government propped up by whoever, so you have to do something different, broaden the base, appeal to the voters who didnt vote, some in the north east and north west, they have to be reached, they were reached with more traditional labour policies around nationalisation, but in the south and the south east, i think you can reach them with a housing policy as well. Popular pragmatic policies explained in a popular way, houses for young people, decent social care for todays elderly, those kind of connection policies, people will do that, then also just defending jobs and Living Standards in the face of brexit, which is the biggest challenge facing us, but he has to have a vision of the country beyond that. Are you clear where he stands on brexit . Yes. What do you think his position is . It is very similar to his position on trident. Has doubts about trident and doubts about the European Union, the party is in favour of the European Union and the party is definitely in favour of decentjobs, party is definitely in favour of decent jobs, decent working conditions, for whoever works in britain and a growing economy. Sol think the and the big thing about jeremy which came out in the general election, he wants to be on brexit where he can cause the government the most pain and the most damage. This is a debate, at the moment, about the current government and the way theyre handling it and hes not falling into the trap of talking about what labour would do. If you wa nt about what labour would do. If you want to find out what a Labour Government do when Jeremy Corbyn is in downing street, have an election and fund out because jeremy is going to win the next. Thats what you believe . He will win the next election, there is every possibility of that happening, but is what key making sure those people who joined the labour party continue to be engaged and the reason why im talking about internal democracy is because what matter is the grass roots. Make people feel like they are connected and a chance to change the country. What is going to happen to the country after brexit is really important. Thank you both, thank you very much. I havent written your surname down here . Goodfellow. The long running legal battle over who owns the royalties to this picture the famous monkey selfie has been settled. It has taken two years. The dispute centred on whether or not the monkey who actually took the picture or the photographer whose camera it was used on owned the picture. Now americanjudges have ruled in favour of the photographer david slater from monmouthshire in South East Wales. Mr slater has agreed with peta, the charity who brought the case, to donate 25 of future royalties to registered monkey charities. Elisa allen is the director peta uk who bought the case and andy parkinson, is a wildlife photographer. Hi both of you. Hi. Right, so, first of all, tell us how you react to this ruling . Well, it was a great settlement. We said right from the beginning that win or lose, this case, it really pushes the conversation about the need to extend basic fundamental, appropriate rights to animals and thats really what this case has done. How much money has it cost . How much money has it cost your organisation in pursuing this . Well, the details of the settlement are confidential. No, no, you can tell us how much youve spent on lawyers fees . We have lawyers in house who have brought this case forward and this is ourjob as an Animal Rights organisation to push the status quo. In fact thats the way that social movements have always operated. It doesnt always make us popular, but its ourjob. Doesnt always make us popular, but its our job. Lets doesnt always make us popular, but its ourjob. Lets not forget that not long ago women were granted property under the law, but tha nkfully property under the law, but thankfully society has changed and evolved and the law evolves with it and so 250 to will it be with Animal Rights because currently animals are viewed as property and that is something we want to change because as long as animals are viewed as property it will be acceptable and legal to whip them in a circus, to force feed pesticides to them in la bs force feed pesticides to them in labs and to string them up and make handbags out of them because they are viewed as pieces of property. Let me bring in andy who is a wildlife photographer. Thank you for talking to usment what do you think of this outcome then . Its obviously a great outcome for the crested black macac. I support the campaign to give animals more rights. I have beena to give animals more rights. I have been a long term supporter of them, but with this, you know, you have to think about the rights of the photographer as well. It was his endeavour that took him to the islands. It was his camera, his memory card, his exposure to come ce ntre memory card, his exposure to come centre tation that he set up, everything that was done to create this image was done by the photographer. This image has been published thousands of times around the world and he habit received a penny and wildlife photography is under tremendous pressure and copywrite laws are vague and once the i will ableg has been released as we saw with the woodpecker and the weasel, it is difficult for a photographer to get those rights back. I think the settlement sounds like a nice balance. It is good that the monkeys will benefit in terms of ongoing con certificate vaugs, but it is important that david does get some hard earned royalties for his endeavours. Thank you, andy. Andy parkinson, wildlife. And elisa allen from p e. T. And elisa allen from p et. A uk. For many freshers, its the first time they have lived away from home, with access to a money and plenty of free time. As a result, Gambling Charities are warning that students may be vulnerable to gambling addiction with some spending up to £10,000 on the habit. Marc etches, is the chief executive officer of gamble aware. Iam glad i am glad that awareness is being raised across society, it is a Public Health issue. Public health in what respect . Well, because i think that we have a30,000 problem gamblers across the uk and two million adults at risk of becoming so. I think when we reach that sort of level then it is indeed a Public Health issue. Problem gambling is a Mental Health issue and bringing it back to the students today. I think our young people are growing up in a very different world than the world that i grew up in, technologically, gambling is accessible. Thrz advertising everywhere and i think for students going away to university, the added pressure of leaving home and receiving a bombardment of enticement to gamble. Whilst for the majority of people, it is only a form of entertainment. So what are you suggesting . We know there are online poker sites, casinos, that advertise to students . Well, i think what we need to do across society, not just well, i think what we need to do across society, notjust for young people, but actually society as a whole, is to educate and raise awareness and thats what gamble aware is here to try to do. It is important to start young. But raise awareness of what . To raise awareness of the risks, the nature of gambling, the risks associated with gambling and indeed if you get into trouble or you know somebody who does, where to go for help and the National Gambling headline and our website, are places that you can find that help. Right. There are some people watching who will say, look, Everybody Knows if you gamble, you can lose as well as win. Are you saying thats not clear to some young people, to some 18 year olds who are regarded as adults . I think im right in saying that the Gambling Commissions report this morning says 54 of the stu d e nts report this morning says 54 of the students it surveyed were playing to earn money and that seems to me to reveal certainly there are, one presumes, educated, intelligent young people who think gambling is there to earn money. It is not. It should always be only thought of as abentertainment. A viewer says, what about the College University campuses that train casino workers . What they should do is Money Management in school so they are aware on how to avoid this. management in school so they are aware on how to avoid this. I think thatis aware on how to avoid this. I think that is absolutely right and what gamble aware has been doing for the last 12 months is working with organisations to pilot Education Programmes in schools and over the forth coming 12 or 18 months, gamble aware will be trying to get government to recognise that in has a place in the national curriculum. Thats interesting. How are the pilots going. What age group are you targeting . This is secondary school. Thats not to say in future we ought to look at primary aged students, to better understand the nature of gambling, the risks associated with it and when they become adult where to go for help if they need it. Thank you very much, marc. A couple of comments to end. This is about drinking during pregnanciment a viewer says, alcohol is poison to your body whether you are pregnant or not. Would you give yr baby wine ina or not. Would you give yr baby wine in a bottle . Obviously not. Jennifer, im 27 years old and im 35 weeks pregnant and i have had the odd drink during my pregnancy. I abstained in my first trimeser once i found out i was pregnant. Abstained in my first trimeser once ifound out i was pregnant. However, i have probably had the equivalent ofa i have probably had the equivalent of a glass of wine every month. I dont feel guilty. At every check up myself and my baby have been declared healthy. Pregnant women are under enough pressure from Society Without being told you must abstain from alcohol. We dont need strangers telling us this. Thank you very much for watching today.
