Its exactly 30 years since the uk was battered by the great storm of 1987. And coming up in the sport later in the hour on bbc news england are on the up but they wont be one of the top seeds at the world cup good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. One person has died in ireland as a result of storm ophelia. Gusts of over 100mph are reported off the coast of ireland. Troops have been deployed to coastal areas in the republic in whats expected to be the most severe storm to hit ireland in half a century. More than 20,000 homes and businesses are without power in the irish republic. An amber warning for Northern Ireland, west wales, south west scotland and the isle of man is in force. Our ireland correspondent Chris Buckler reports. Connor irelands west coast, they are used to strong winds and high waves. But they are preparing for a storm that threatens to cause enormous damage and destruction. Galway sits near the centre of ophelias anticipated path. Ahead of her arrival, this city has been shutting down. Sandbags have been placed at the front of the seafront hotels. And in the city centre, store after store has signs saying they will not open today. The irish governments advice has been very clear if you dont need to go out, then dont. This is a national red alert. It applies to all cities, all counties and all areas. Also bear in mind that even after the storm has passed, there will still be dangerous. There will be trees on the ground, there will be power lines down. Ophelia may no longer be classified as a hurricane but satellite pictures show the size of the remaining storm. Because of the dangers, all of irelands schools and colleges have been closed. Hospital outpatient appointments have been cancelled and the streets have been cancelled and the streets have been cancelled and the streets have been cleared. Bars have even been taking their bins back inside. And businesses are putting floodgates on their doors because of concern about the potential storm surge. The lifeboats are honourable stand by at the moment. The crews are there. The army are in the barracks ready to go. We were filling sandbags last night. barracks ready to go. We were filling sandbags last night. If this isa filling sandbags last night. If this is a national emergency, there are concerns that not everybody is taking it as seriously as others. If you look closely in the centre of this screen, you will see somebody swimming in galway bay this morning. People are being told they have got to be careful particularly with falling trees and broken power cables. As things stand right now we are approaching 100,000 homes and businesses without electricity. They are predominantly in an area from cork city west and north up as far as truly. And broadcasters are among those being told to watch out. We arejust outside at those being told to watch out. We are just outside at the moment and there are really powerful gusts of wind here. The worst of the winds are yet to come. This may be the re m na nts of are yet to come. This may be the remnants of a hurricane, but ophelia seem determined to show the power she still has. Chris buckler, bbc news, ireland. It hasjust been confirmed that the death was a woman when a tree fell on her car in south west ireland. County kerry has borne the brunt of the storm so far. Pascal shehy from the irish broadcaster rte sent this from dingle bay, where strong winds have been causing disruption. Ive just come outdoors again to show you that significant amounts of rain are being carried now in the wind. The wind has abated slightly. Perhaps we are over the worst of it here in south kerry and the storm is moving northwards. As i say, there are now significant amounts of rain falling. Will it cause problems later on . The tide is coming in here. The breeze, the wind is due to veer around first of all southerly and then south westerly, and that will drive the tide onshore and that has caused problems here in the past in bays like dingle bay, communities around here, and here in ross bay. And there have been flooding problems there. We can expect Something Like that in a localised fashion again. The other problem being caused here is by the wind. It has brought down significant amounts of trees as well as blocking roads and causing difficulties for people who are continuing to commute, notwithstanding the conditions. Those falling trees have brought down dozens and dozens of power cables and thousands of homes are consequently without electricity this lunchtime. Our ireland correspondent Chris Buckler is in galway. The bit of the coast where you are is clearly taking a battering. Yes, believe it or not, the worst is still to come according to the forecasts for galway. In the last hour or so the wind and rain have really picked up. You get a sense of what is coming from ophelia. Here they have been making lots of preparations. You can see the promenade behind me. It has been closed to people and the coastguard are advising people to stay away from areas like this. There are deep concerns that this storm could cause real problems and notjust damage and destruction. As we have been hearing, already one person has lost their life as a result of the damage and destruction that has been broad with this storm. At the moment people are being advised to make no an essential journeys and people are being advised to make no an essentialjourneys and to stay off the roads if they possibly can and you can get the sense that people are well prepared. The Defence Forces a re people are well prepared. The Defence Forces are working alongside the council and others. Sandbags are in place but they are preparing for a lot of damage, a lot of wind, and a lot of damage, a lot of wind, and a lot of rain. Chris buckler, thank you. The Prime Minister is heading to brussels for talks to try to end a stalemate over brexit negotiations. Shell have dinner with the eus chief negotiator Michel Barnier and the head of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker days after the men said talks were in deadlock. Downing street says the meeting had been planned for some time though it wasnt in mr junckers published diary. Our assistant Political Editor norman smith is in westminster. Are these emergency talks in all but name . Well, downing street insists this is not panic central because of the seemingly deadlocked brexit talks. But you really do detect a new degree of urgency in the governments approach and a clear desire for this dinner to go an awful lot better than the last one withjean claude awful lot better than the last one with Jean Claude Juncker in downing street which ended in acrimony, with the german press being briefed that Jean Claude Juncker thought that theresa may was deluded. And then theresa may was deluded. And then theresa may was deluded. And then theresa may telling british journalists that jean claude theresa may telling british journalists thatJean Claude Juncker should in effect but out of british politics. Hopefully it will not end up politics. Hopefully it will not end up with moules et frites all over the table and both sides bad mouthing each other. The table and both sides badmouthing each other. Theresa may is trying to breathe all the key players. She spoke to Angela Merkel yesterday and will speak to Emmanuel Macron later today, to try to get those key figure to move on to the trade talks. Borisjohnson has been out and about this morning saying to eu leaders that the offer theresa may put you in florence is a reasonable one. Dont let the grass grow under your feet. But we are really reaching a critical moment in the brexit negotiations. If there is not a breakthrough really in the next few weeks, then the pressure on mrs may to simply walk away and accept no deal could yet become insurmountable. Norman, thank you. During pregnancy or in the year after giving birth, as many as one in five women experience Severe Mental Health issues such as depression or postpartum psychosis. The provision of in patient units, where women can be treated without being separated from their babies, varies greatly across the uk. Plans for new units have been announced by nhs england and campaigners in wales are calling for similar services. Sian lloyd reports. Yours is lovely, harry. There it is. Happy times with her boys. But five years after the birth of her first son ethan, Charlotte Harding still struggles to cope. During labour, she began hallucinating and experienced feelings of paranoia. I started to feel like there was somebody else in the room. I felt the curtains around me were sort of shaking with the wind, like a whispering, that was coming from everywhere. The first thing i thought was, if i tell anybody, theyre going to take my baby. Outwardly, charlotte tried to hide herfear about how she was feeling as a new mum. I was scared of my son at first because i didnt know what to do. I did feel disconnected. I felt that i couldnt be a good mother. I thought that because im not feeling too well, i cant be the mum that he needs. Charlotte was diagnosed with a serious Mental Health condition called postpartum psychosis which affects around one in a thousand women. Treatment in a residential unit was recommended, but with no facility in wales, the nearest was bristol and that was full. The specialist provision of mother and baby units varies across the uk. There are currently 15 units in england with more than 100 beds in total. Four new eight bed units are planned to open next year. Scotland has 12 beds divided between two centres, wales and Northern Ireland currently have no units at all. Mental Health Campaigners say that must change. Its incredibly important that both for the small number of mum who are severely mentally ill, they get fast Health Service tracked into specialist services. That nodes to be close to where they live, close to their families, close to where they get support and they can see their babies. Without that kind of specialist support, it can take much, much longer for mums to get better. A review into services here in wales will publish its findings tomorrow. Its expected it will recommend that a mother and baby unit be set up. The Welsh Government says its working to ensure that in patient provision is made available and is looking at what form it will take. It hopes to have details by the end of the year. I love it. It cant come quickly enough for people like charlotte. Shes been involved in the campaign for change. Without residential care, her treatment took more than a year. Vital months lost in bonding with her son. Sian lloyd, bbc news, cardiff. Facebook says it will help to train children in uk secondary schools about staying safe online. The social networking site, which has around two billion users, will pay two charities to develop digital safety ambassadors. It follows calls for the company to do more to deal with online bullying and terrorism related content. Heres our technology correspondent, rory cellan jones. Look who it is. Such a weirdo. Surrounded by bullies. What are you looking at. Im stupid and cant find a way out and you dont know where to turn for help. You are going to cry. Thiss the dark side of social media as portrayed at the launch of a project designed to help schools combat abuse. Facebook is funding two charities to train children to act as digital safety ambassadors in every uk secondary school that wants them. Robert and poppy are already doing thisjob in their school. Robert and poppy are already doing this job in their school. It means that you are making a difference both on the internet and in your school because you are making it a better and safer place for everyone. Its facebook, snapchat. Its something you can get involved in and help people out with it youres. Facebook says Research Shows children prefer to turn to each other for help, rather than to a pa rent other for help, rather than to a parent or teacher. Its an amazing thing to see a young person whos maybe encountered bullying in their life help another young person to work through that. Facebook is investing £1 million in this programme, not a investing £1 million in this programme, nota huge investing £1 million in this programme, not a huge sum when it aims to train tens of thousands of young digital safety ambassadors and, along with other social media firms, its under pressure to do far more, in particularagree firms, its under pressure to do far more, in particular agree a volu nta ry more, in particular agree a voluntary code of practice to make the internet safer. The culture secretary welcomed facebooks initiative but is hoping the social media firms will voluntarily agreat a new code. If theynd up saying, we are already doing enough, we have all got our own codes, we are all fine, what will you say . Look, we have said we dont rule anything out. We have said that we are prepared to take whatever steps we need to to get to the point where we believe the uk is the safest place to be online. On their own, young digital ambassadors cant make the internet safe. Politicians and pa rents internet safe. Politicians and parents may demand that facebook and others do more to end online abuse. Rory cellan jones, bbc news. This month englands cricketers fly to australia for their biggest challenge, the ashes. The team will rely heavily on one of their most consistent and talented players, Jonny Bairstow. In his personal life, hes already overcome a challenge few of us could imagine; dealing as a young boy with the suicide of his father, who was also a professional cricketer. Now, for the first time in a television interview, Jonny Bairstow has spoken in depth about his past to our sports correspondentjoe wilson. John you bairstow is a world class cricketer, for england heres essential, a rock, a batsman and wicket keeper just like essential, a rock, a batsman and wicket keeperjust like his father. He played for england too. The link between son and father is unmista keable. Thats a between son and father is unmistakeable. Thats a brilliant catch by bairstow. Unmistakeable. Thats a brilliant catch by bairstow. David bairstow played cricket for yorkshire for 20 yea rs. Played cricket for yorkshire for 20 years. But he never saw played cricket for yorkshire for 20 years. But he never sanohnny grow up. When johnny was years. But he never sanohnny grow up. Whenjohnny was eight, he returned one evening with his mother and sister to discover that his father had ta ken and sister to discover that his father had taken his own life in the family house. Me and my sister were both very, very young. In some ways yes you do remember everything that went on because there you will remember that. At the same time, there are bits of it that you choose not to remember, that you choose to park. Like i mentioned in the book, there is no need to be angry for many, there is no need to be angry for any there is no need to be angry for many, many years, oranything there is no need to be angry for many, many years, or anything like that. The comparisons with his father were inevitable oncejohnny became a cricketer. He only ever imagined a career in sport. He has started to stop answering questions about his death. Its clear as he dealt with retirement, his wifes illness, and david struggled with emotional pain he couldnt express. Almost that its not culturally allowed to talk about emotional feelings and depression or whatever it might be. Do you feel thats changed in your world, it might be. Do you feel thats changed in yourworld, in it might be. Do you feel thats changed in your world, in your experience as a sportsman, is that culture changed 7 experience as a sportsman, is that culture changed . I think theres a different view on it now, definitely. I think that theres obviously sports psychologists, yes doctors now will see different things. But theres still not a single thing that you can say, right youve got depression because there are so many youve got depression because there are so many different aspects of it. Youve got Mental Health issues, anxiety, youve got this, that and the other. You cant say right youve got a snotty nose, youve got a cold, thats easy. I wonder if reading that book and maybe hearing you talk about it might make somebody think twice about taking their on life . What do you think about that . If that could be a result from your writing this and talking about it . Yes, i think it potentially could do. Everyones going to react to it in a different way. If people have had setbacks from early on in their life, then theres no reason why you cant go on and still succeed. You talk in the book about how, you know, your dad would be proud of you and what youve done in cricketing, of course he would be. I also reckon hed be proud of you for the way youve talked about this and dealt with it in the book . Yes. Who knows but. Id hope so and i think eid be very proud of the way becky and i have turned out. Thanks for your time. Thank you. Joe wilson speaking to johnny bairstow. On the same day as parts of the uk are coping with the impact of storm ophelia, by coincidence it is exactly 30 years since the great storm of 1987. 18 people died and 15 Million Trees were flattened as winds reached speeds of 115 miles per hour. One of the places devastated by the storm was Scotney Castle in kent. Our correspondent robert hall is there this lunchtime. Reeta, this is a country of two halves today, as far as the weather is concerned anyway. Sit here on a Beautiful Day like this looking out over that landscape and you really will see very little trace of the devastation that was wrought in 87 by the worst storm they now believe in more than 200 years. Howling in from the channel, the most devastating storm since 1703, it caught the southern half of the uk totally by surprise. Gusts of up to 115mph ripped 15 Million Trees from the wet ground, tore off rooves and cut power to thousands of homes. 18 people were killed and the damage ran to over a billion pounds. In london, power cuts forced the brea kfast in london, power cuts forced the breakfast news team into an emergency studio. We must apologise for this rather makeshift breakfast time service which we are bringing you. The home of breakfast time is out of action this morning asa time is out of action this morning as a result of the bad weather. Part of the reason that so many were caught on the hop could be found in a now infamous forecast the previous day. Earlier on today apparently a woman rang the bbc and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way. If you are watching, dont worry, there isnt. Pictures way. If you are watching, dont worry, there isnt. Pictures shot in the hours after the storm offered a glimpse of the most dramatic damage, broadcastest and local papers charted planes to capture a changed landscape. Papers charted planes to capture a changed landscapelj papers charted planes to capture a changed landscape. I think the most amazing sight for us was the sight of the six of the seven oak trees on the ground after which the town was named lying on their side. Across the southern counties, Emergency Services struggled to re open roads and make structures safe. On the coast, an operation was launched to refloat a grounded ferry. The most lasting effect was the devastation of ancient woodland. This garden near sevenoaks lost of ancient woodland. This garden near sevenoa ks lost 95 of ancient woodland. This garden near sevenoaks lost 95 of its trees to the gale, some of those were more than 300 years old. In the decades which followed, many woods were replanted. But which followed, many woods were repla nted. But in which followed, many woods were replanted. But in some cases, the land was left untouch and nature provided its own first aid, new clearings encouraging new plant growth and new wildlife species. Today, perfection has returned, proving that green shoots can and will find a way through destruction. Things have moved on a great deal, we have super computers, satellite, enabling us to prepare and predict and we can see that
