Desperate fleet street editor. Thats all i had on bbc news, but lets concentrate on the news that has emerged in the last half hour or so, Gatwick Airport has confirmed all sites are suspended because of a fault with the air Traffic Control system. We can show you what has been set online by them. Well, our transport correspondent is here. This is highly disruptive, tom. Its a significant incident. Ive just tom. Its a significant incident. Ivejust come off tom. Its a significant incident. Ive just come off the phone from speaking to Gatwick Airport, and what theyre saying at moment is that this has been ongoing for roughly an hour, so flights had been suspended in and out of gatwick for an hourso far. Suspended in and out of gatwick for an hour so far. There is no indication of how long this will go on for. There is some unconfirmed reports on social media from passengers on board planes stuck in various places or at gatwick saying theyre being told this could go on to at least 10pm tonight, but thats unconfirmed. Exactly what the hitch is, or the problem, unconfirmed. Exactly what the hitch is, orthe problem, details unconfirmed. Exactly what the hitch is, or the problem, details are sketchy, gatwick are saying there is a control system issue in the control tower. The Company Running air Traffic Control at gatwick is a Company Called air navigation solutions, so it is in the airport ultimately that has the problem, its the Company Running the air Traffic Control system. But, yes, a significant incident. A handful of sites so far into gatwick have been diverted but ive sat next to that ru nway diverted but ive sat next to that runway filming before, and its one of the business runways in the world. We are talking about flights going in and out of that runway every few minutes. I was going to say, typical weekday evening at this time of year, this is affecting hundreds of people. Thats the other things that we are pretty much into the Holiday Season now, so if a flight the Holiday Season now, so if a flight schedule that maggots of the flight flight schedule that maggots of the flight schedule that maggots of the flight schedule will be much more crowded. So the flight schedule will be much more crowded. So it will be much more crowded. So it will be much more crowded. So it will be dependent on how quickly they can get flights moving again, that will be a waiting game. I think at the moment, we dont have much of an idea exactly what the issue is but for now, all sites are suspended. I think at the moment, ill be talking to somebody who is basically stuck because they are looking to fly back into gatwick from afar, thats the other point here, isnt it . You could be in a far flung corner of the world, waiting to fly to gatwick and suddenly this begins to affect you as well. Yeah. Ive seen a few comments on social media, people stuck in crete, for example. Clearly anyone trying to get into gatwick tonight is that, wherever they are in the world at this precise moment, in an airport, probably. Anyone trying to get in is stuck. And probably in one waiting to get under flights this evening, obviously flights this evening, obviously flights will only go up to night time hours, so virtually all uk airports im pretty sure have night time bands, so you would imagine flights will be taking off for the next few hours out of gatwick. So i think we will be looking at dozens, at least dozens of flights affected over the course of flights affected over the course of the evening. That number will go up of the evening. That number will go up the longer this goes on. Ive been told in my right youre talking no flights arriving or departing set until after 9pm. Ive been told in my ear. Im just going to speak to catherine in crete, who stranded and hoping to get back to gatwick. Tells what you have been told at this stage . Hi, yeah, so we are currently in an airport, everybody has sort of come through customs and passport control. We can see our ba flight passport control. We can see our ba flight we are supposed to be birding has actually come in, but weve been given very Little Information about when we can board. We are supposed be boarding. The only thing we have been advised by British Airways is that we are looking at about a 3 15am arrival time, though it hasnt specified that will the arrival time, but communication has been very poor on these. What time will be due to be taking off . We we re will be due to be taking off . We were due to be leaving at 9 30pm this evening. So given where you are now, youve arrived in good time, youve got to the whole check in process without any hint of this, presumably . Absolutely nothing at all. Weve had a garbled kind of message from the airport staff, they seem to be a little bit confused about this situation. How many people around you are in a similar situation . Of these are people on your fly, but i wonder is there are others waiting to get back as well . I think there are probably two flights here that are due to enter the uk comes only from my departure lounge. And lots of Young Children and young parents wondering what theyre going to do with their children for that period of time. So there are lots of very frustrated and concerned people come on people who are due to be at work. Of course. We wish you well, thank you for coming on. And tom isjoining us afresh on this. Just bringing it up to date on what we know, really, at this point. For roughly an hour now, all flights in and out of Gatwick Airport have been suspended for of the airport says it is a problem with systems in the control tower, i have contacted them to ask if it means software systems, can confirm that at this stage. The Company Behind it, ans, not actually the airport, thats pretty standard at all uk airports, the Company Operating the air Traffic Control in behalf of the airport. Some people saying theyre stuck on planes, one individual saying theyre stuck on a plane at cleo. I think at the moment we got no idea how long this will go on for, potentially nine, commenced a passenger suggesting ten. We know a passenger suggesting ten. We know a handful of sites into the airport have been diverted all that credit this evening. But we know there two ru nways this evening. But we know there two runways in use, they have a smaller emergency runway which they want to start using in future the government gives them permission, and the moment theyve got one runway, one of the busiest in the world, they claim the busiest in the world but ive had that claim for other airports as well. But certainly every few minutes, you have a plane coming in and out. So disruption this evening will be significant. And i think its the usual advice. Anyone who potentially has a flight in and out of gatwick, in or out of gatwick, tomorrow morning early, i think, check with your airline. Because even if, and thats a big if, this incident wraps up relatively quickly, within the next hour or relatively quickly, within the next hourorso, relatively quickly, within the next hour or so, there will be a fairly significant disruption, they will be some knock on effect into tomorrow because airlines have slots. If your flight because airlines have slots. If your flight is already booked into a slot for tomorrow morning, for example, it will keep that slot, its not a question of the flights which have been cancelled or suspended this evening will sort of take the slots, those of the flights that would then have to find the spare capacity, basically, in and out of gatwick over the coming hours and did tomorrow. But airlines and the airport will have a sort of the juggfing airport will have a sort of the juggling match, once this incident is resolved, the kind of, you know, minimise disruption and get every Single Person to their destination, wherever that may be. But at the moment this incident is ongoing and all flights are suspended. Thanks, tumbles upi all flights are suspended. Thanks, tumbles up i suspect we might talk a little later on. But now on bbc news, time for sports a. Thatmental thanks, tom. Thanks, tom. Hello and welcome to sportsday. We live at wimbledon on day nine of these championships, these are our headlines tonight. The defending champion, Novak Djokovic, marches on into another wimbledon semifinal. Roger federer throws him through as he eyes night singles title. Follows hi m he eyes night singles title. Follows him through. And nadal is on top, helping to ensure all of the big three reach the last fortnight. Must four. Disappointment, though, for andy murray and Serena Williams as they crashed out of the mixed doubles. And im 0lly foster at the bbc sport centre. India fall short at old trafford, new zealand have reached the World Cup Final again. And silverstone stays on the formula one calendar, theres a new five year deal for the circuit. Another Beautiful Day here at sw 19, on what has been a mens quarterfinal day, we have the pull of the big three into the semifinals. We are waiting to see whether rafa nadal can join semifinals. We are waiting to see whether rafa nadal canjoin Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer there. Roger federer is waiting in the last fourfor Roger Federer is waiting in the last four for rafa Roger Federer is waiting in the last fourfor rafa nadal, if he Roger Federer is waiting in the last four for rafa nadal, if he can Roger Federer is waiting in the last fourfor rafa nadal, if he can come past sam querrey. Lets start with Novak Djokovic. That drawer has really opened up for him. And its fairto really opened up for him. And its fair to say he perhaps hasnt really been challenged yet, straight sets win for been challenged yet, straight sets winfor him. Been challenged yet, straight sets win for him. I think hes still playing at an exceptionally high level. He was in the right half of the draw, no doubt about it, when Roger Federer and rafa nadal were paved together in the other half djokovic knew he would be a strong favourite to come through the half of the draw he was in, really, very few alarms. He was in, really, very few alarms. He was in, really, very few alarms. He was in, really, very few alarms. Hes dropped one set in the first week but today, after the devastating. Never goffin started really well, 11 3 in the first that david goffin. His everything youd expect of an world number one and more, Novak Djokovic. He will be desperately difficult beat. Highlights of his straight sets win out on centre Court Earlier on. We know he has four wimbledon titles, would you have him down as a favour to make that five this year . would you have him down as a favour to make that five this year . If he does 15, he will have the same number as bjorn borg. Ive had a sneaking feeling for rafa nadal throughout the but i thought he might edge it last year and he was beenin might edge it last year and he was been in that amazing semifinal by djokovic, the two des semifinal but finished before the ladies final on saturday on centre court. There is absolutely nothing in it. Djokovic will be a strong favourite against Roberto Bautista agut because its a straight semifinal, and he will be hoping that Roger Federer and indeed if rafa nadal comes through from his quarterfinal as it looks will be the case, take lumps out of each other over many hours in their semifinal on friday afternoon. Novak djokovic, such a supreme athlete and rafa fans will be delighted with your prediction, there. Roger federer, as we know, also three. We know his quality here on the grass at wimbledon, but arguably of the quarterfinal line up danish courier the toughest facing any of the big three. Kai nishikori. The toughest facing any of the big three. Kai nishikori. Nishikori still very much an underdog against federer, as was goffin in the djokovic match, and sam querrey against rafa nadal. All started well. Pressure on nadal in the first set, because i made a good start against djokovic, and nishikori went on attack from the first against federer, but then federer turned things around. He is 38 in a few weeks time, that was his 100th win at wimbledon today. 100 wins in the same grandson. Not even rough nadal has done that. Impressive. We know how much support there is for Roger Federer, the oldest grand slam finalist since Jimmy Connors federer, the oldest grand slam finalist sinceJimmy Connors at the us open in 1991. What he keeps achieving, Roger Federer, its unbelievable. Lets talk about rafael nadal, he is on course to win against sam querrey. It would be great to see that line up in the semifinals, Roger Federer against rafa nadal. It will be the first time theyve met you at wimbledon since 2008, which seems amazing that theyve not met in 11 years, but we can see it, we can anticipate it as soon as that drawer was made. And all three of these guys are playing unbelievably well and at times i think people are finding it a bit repetitive in the early stages because these guys keep winning so easily they have not been many contests in the minstrel. But when you get at this stage, and you think youre going to have three of them in the semifinals and federer and nadal meeting, youre rewarded perhaps for a lack of the contest and so there the around. Some live pictures from court number one, a break in play at the moment. Nadal is 4 1 up now in the third set. Play seems to have opened up a bit for a Novak Djokovic, and arguably he has the easier semifinal against Roberto Bautista agut, who perhaps surprised many with his victory today. Coming through in straight sets, he is not dropped a set in the championship. This is the man who beat memorably and demand in the first round of the australian open, but we thought at the time might be moneys final ever match as a tennis player. And playing just brilliantly, having amazing season, and is a results has had to put his stag weekend plans on hold. Six of his mates are currently in eyepiece are waiting for him, there are likely to come to london and presumably he will find tickets for them in the semifinal, and who knows, if he loses maybe they go out toa knows, if he loses maybe they go out to a visa and blow the prize money. That be so. Stag night is on hold, the wedding fortunately is not. Thanks for that. There you go, our mens semifinal line up was complete. We will of course get that rafa nadal for complete. We will of course get that rafa nadalfor big result for you, but for now back to the studio. What a difference a day makes. Before the rain intervened at old trafford yesterday, india were on top in their world cup semi final against new zealand. By the time they came into bat today they only needed 240 for victory, but they fell short. The black caps reaching the final for a second time our sports correspondentjoe wilson was at the game. There is a sense of shock, notjust that india the world cricket superpower are out, but the fact that they could not chase down 240 to win this match. But one thing we have been saying throughout this tournament, even though india when they have been playing well are winning, what would happen if the top orderfail . Winning, what would happen if the top order fail . Remember, winning, what would happen if the top orderfail . Remember, these are the top order batsmen, rohit sharma with 500 in the world cup so far, the top order those on view at coney, worlds best batsman according to the rankings. Virat kohli. And yet these batsmen fell and the scoreboard was almost unbelievable when it read 5 3. What made it enthralling throughout most of the early afternoon here was that they we re early afternoon here was that they were getting india in touch. The one player on the india team he was scoring at a decent rate of. But when youre trying to hit sixes youre not always going to come off, and eventually he found new zealands m. Imagine being under this one, at this stage it really did seem as if the world cup was on the line. Even whenjadeja was gone, there was a 100 partnership. But great throw from Martin Guptill to com plete great throw from Martin Guptill to complete that line out, that is when they hope really did die. Of course, new zealand were in the final four yea rs new zealand were in the final four years ago, so maybe we should stop thinking of it as a surprise. Having said all that, both england and australia, who play the second semifinal tomorrow, will be, i think, secretly, privately glad that they might be playing new zealand and not india. Lets get a bit more reaction and hue from the winning captain from new zealand now. At the stage, we knew that we are to be competitive if we got that, because the surface played the way did. But then to have the start with the ball that we had was an outstanding way to and kick things off and try and get into a position off and try and get into a position of strength, and i thought the way that the bowlers of the filters operated throughout on the big field, on a surface that they had to adapt differently again, was great. So williamsons team are into the final, waiting for either england or australia. They play each other at edgbaston tomorrow, both sides trained at the ground today, england lost to australia in the group stage, a
