The fact that the authorities are investigating whether this was a targeted racist attack has led some to question whether the rhetoric being used by politicians here is actually making things worse. This massacre quickly reverberated on the president ial election trail. Democratic candidate beto orourke who is from el paso returned to his home town to be with people affected and said resident trump was to blame for the increased levels of hate and racism. Weve had a rise in hate crimes, every single one of the last three years, during an administration we have a president who has called mexicans rapists and criminals. Mexican immigrants commit crimes at a far lower rate than those born in this country. Hes tried to make us afraid of them to some real effect and consequence. Resident trump has condemned the shooting, calling it tragic, hateful and cowardly. Eight has no place in oui and cowardly. Eight has no place in our country. We have to get it stopped. Just hours after the attack in el paso, nine people were killed and 26 others wounded in another shooting this time outside a bar in dayton, ohio. Police shot the gunman dead. They now say his 22 year old sister was among those killed. Heres our north america correspondent chris buckler. After a saturday morning of grief and violence in america came a saturday night that brought more of the same. Nine people were killed and more than two dozen injured, all in a shooting that lasted less then a minute, as people were enjoying an evening out in the centre of dayton. They started pushing us out the back door, into the alley out the back because they didnt want us coming out the front because they didnt know where the shooter was. Or how many there was. When you came outside, as soon as you hit the front street, you saw the bodies and you knew that this was different. You knew it was something you never thought of experiencing, the gunman has been identified as 24 year old connor betts. His home is being searched by police, who say he was wearing body armour, using an Assault Rifle and carrying more magazines of ammunition when he was shot dead by officers. Among his victims was his own sister. She was very sweet, had her own opinions, and was loud and kind ina way own opinions, and was loud and kind in a way that her brother was quiet and kept more to himself. Visuals have become all too familiar in this country. I think the police and our First Responders have done an amazing job. Clearly the question has to be raised, why does dayton have to be the 250th mass shooting in america. Years after years, campaigners put pressure on washington to change american gun laws but there is a stalemate within congress and that is not likely to change. Besides, in dayton, el paso and change. Besides, in dayton, el paso a nd cou ntless change. Besides, in dayton, el paso and countless other cities, they know that despite the killings, the debate about hate is likely to drown out the question about guns. Emergency workers have spent the day pumping more water out of a reservoir in derbyshire to try and prevent a dam collapsing. Theyve managed to reduce water levels by more than three metres but say the situation remains critical, with a very high threat to life. Danny savage reports from there. Tonight, the dam above Whaley Bridge was reinforced again by air drops. For days on, there is still much work to do. To get anywhere near Whaley Bridge today, he had to be patient. People have been queueing foran hourand a patient. People have been queueing for an hour and a quarter. Maybe we should all be more understanding but its just frustrating. The evacuation area is being strictly controlled by police. Have you got a driver s license on you . The issue we are having as people ignoring the road closure signs if they live within the risk area. We absolutely are aiming to get people back in their homes as soon as possible but im not prepared they can do that unless i get absolute insurance snack assurance it is safe for them to do so. Beyond the cordons, its eerily quiet. Does the silence wake you up light . It is. The First Time Ever we can hear birds. Tina runs a pub on the edge of what is now a ghost town. Worst Case Scenario would be a disasterfor ghost town. Worst Case Scenario would be a disaster for her friends and customers. You can replace material things to agree but when you begin. Its really sad. The water level has dropped significantly and the pumps have been pushed into the reservoir but its still not deemed anywhere near safe enough for people to return home. We drop the water level in the dam. We feeling it in a much better place. We want to get people back into their homes quickly as we can but we want to be 100 sure they can go back safely. For people here, its chilling to think what could have happened if the dam had failed without warning. Including brian and sue, have taken in their children and grandchildren. We would have lost ourfamily, and grandchildren. We would have lost our family, our wife and son and two lovely girls and so would eve ryo ne and two lovely girls and so would everyone else was involved in our village, would have experienced this awful thing. The authorities want to be sure this area is safe before letting people return to their homes but the situation is improving. Police say a 6 year old boy is in a Critical Condition after being thrown from a tenth floor balcony at the tate modern art gallery in london. He landed on a fifth floor roof and was flown to hospital. A 17 year old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. 0lga malchevska from the Bbc Russian Service was with her son on the iot floor viewing balcony of the tate modern when the incident happens. She joins me via webcam from south london. Thank you forjoining us. Im sure you and many parents who are there and many parents watching find all this very distressing. Good evening. Well, yes, actually we didnt understand what was going on at that particular moment. I was standing on the balcony on the 10th floor with my little son who is four years old, and, well, at one of the moments, we realised that people started pushing and we started to move towards the exit and on my way to the lift, there was a woman running and shouting, oh, my son. She was crying. Nobody could actually understand what was going on. The boy dropped down. I took my son and the lift was packed. People are shocked inside. At that moment, everybody was talking about the boy falling down but nobody knew exactly what was happening. There was a boy who pushed that way. I cant really speak to much about that. But then we went down in the elevator and approached on the ground floor, we we re approached on the ground floor, we were approached by the security and they told not to panic. People who are already on the ground floor, all the exits have closed for now. Nobody was around to go away. So the building went into lockdown. You had to remain inside. It was approximately an hour and maybe 20 minutes. I cant be sure. At that moment, people started panicking. Please stay calm, dont panic. What i could see from the window is that several ambulances came and also a helicopter and at some point, while it was not possible to understand through the window whether it was a person or what was inside it when they close the helicopter, it was what i could see, the paramedics trying to help somebody who was on the floor. That person probably was put into the helicopter and the helicopter took off and insecurity told me there was a boy and he was alive at that moment and he was taken to hospital. That is basically what i saw and i didnt want to speculate on something else. We shouldnt. All go, thank you very much for talking us through that. All the same, terrific for you and other people. 0lga. Thank you very much for talking to us. Tonight, our thoughts very much remain with that little boy and his pa rents remain with that little boy and his parents as well. That said some flights, a small number of flights had been cancelled. Tonight, airlines are rescheduling many of those cancelled flights. The advice is to check with the airline and most flights will run as normal. The threat of thousands of workers and firefighters walking out on tuesday is still on the cards. I hope really is still on the cards. I hope really is that something can be done. Between the united union and heathrow of a paper looking forward, if you look at the exceptional measure taken by heathrow on friday, two days ago, to cancel 90 flights per strike today gives you a sense of what is at stake. Englands cricketers face a huge battle to save the opening ashes test. They will start the final day 13 without loss, chasing an unlikely target of 398, after australias talisman steve smith hit yet another century. Joe wilson reports from edgbaston. In sport, a precious few seem to live in a different world, to move at their own speed and dictate the pace, true vips. Steve smith is one. He arrived at edgbaston at 9 45am, ready to bat all day. England had to try something. Something . Well, thats different. A surprise at least. 0ptions were limited with anderson injured. Jofra archer was only a substitute fielder. He couldnt bowl well, not until the next test. Smith was still doing his thing. He bats like nobody else great fun, unless of course you are the bowler. Plenty more where that came from. How is your patience wilting . A word from stokes. A reply from smith. Even edgbastons enthusiasts, at times, today struggled. With this shot, smith got to 100, his second of the match. With every beaming minute, he extended australias lead. His personal total 142. Well, matthew wade took the opportunity to find his form. He made 100 as well. Remember when australia were on the ropes in this test . Well, it seemed like a very different ashes now. Even australias tail enders were dispatching englands weary bowlers, as australias lead grew. They invited england to bat again, 397 behind. Englands opening batsman began their second innings and survived. Plenty more of this to come. Australia have got themselves in a winning position, and they knew who to thank. Cheers, steve. Manchester city have won the Community Shield after beating liverpool on penalties at wembley. Gabrieljesus buried the winning penalty after Gini Wijnaldum missed one for liverpool. The premier League Season starts on friday with the reds hosting norwich. And rangers had to rely on a stoppage time goal to win their opening game of the scottish premiership. They beat kilmarnock 2 1. In the days other match, hearts lost 3 2 at aberdeen. It was a dramatic finish in the formula one, with Lewis Hamilton winning the hungarian grand prix, overtaking Max Verstappen in the closing stages to extend his lead at the top of the drivers championship. It was the gamble from a pit stop that paid off for the mercedes driver. Nick parrott reports. Formula one has enjoyed three epic races on the spin, and in hungary, it was hoping for a grand finale before its summer break. Lewis hamilton was keen to bounce back after his worst race of the season last time out in germany, but he had Max Verstappen standing on his way. The young dutchman was on pole position for the first time, and a perfect start saw him stay ahead of the mercedes. Hamilton quickly got past team mate bottas to move up to second but on a circuit where it is difficult to overtake it like Max Verstappen would hold on for a second win in a row. That was before mercedes gambled by pulling in hamilton for a second pitstop. But it turned out it was. Red bull could do nothing as verstappens 22nd lead quickly evaporated. With just three la ps to quickly evaporated. With just three laps to go, the game was up, and hamilton went on to claim his eighth win of the season. Despite their recent wobbles, mercedes showed they are still masters of this sport 20 second lead. The final womens golf major of the year, the british open, was won by the little known japanese player hinako shibuno. Playing abroad for the first time, the 20 year old dazzled the seasoned pros at woburn, winning by a shot after sinking a long putt for a birdie on the final hole. Thats all the sport for now. We wa nt we want to give you a bit of a preview of a panorama that is being broadcast tomorrow. When the last stronghold of the so called Islamic State was overrun in syria in march this year, thousands of women and children were moved to secure camps. Many nationalities are represented there, including women who travelled from europe to the middle east in support of is. Four months on, they are still being held by kurdish authorities. Apart from a few children who have been taken back to their countries of origin, western governments have yet to decide what to do about citizens who are in the camps. For bbc panorama, Stacey Dooley travelled to two syrian camps close to the borders of iraq and turkey, the al hol and al roj camps. This is al hol camp, home to more than 70,000 people, most of them refugees. But among its population, there are also around 11,000 foreign women, former is brides, and their children. Most want to go back to the countries where they were born and brought up, but western governments see them as a threat to national security, so for now, this place is home. Many said they were two scared to talk to me, but two british girls did. You are british. You sound british. Conditions in the camp are harsh, and the atmosphere is tense. We have to be chaperoned the entire time. Before we arrived, there was an incident where one of the female guards was stabbed to death. And is still wields power over these peoples lives. We have been told that even young girls are beaten if they dont wear the neck up. As we left the camp, we saw women raising their index finger in nis salute. Niqab. A few days later, a video was posted online that supposedly shows the is flag being raised over the camp. Alongside the women, some 8000 children are living in camps like these. The authorities running the camp say they fear the longer the children stay, the more likely they are to follow in their parents footsteps. Europe has taken a handful of orphans, but the rest are still waiting with their mothers for an answer to the difficult question of what to do next with them. This is al roj. The atmosphere is less tense. Women here seem to be responding to attempts to de radicalise them. This woman says she has been living here with her three children for two years. Has been living here with her three children for two yearslj has been living here with her three children for two years. I hope one day, you know, they will make the decision to take the responsibility in other countries to take us back, andi in other countries to take us back, and i hope then that the children can go to a better place with a better life. This is what i hope. Me, i understand, you know . When i go to the present, i take the responsibility, the consequence from the decision that i make. Yes. But only my children, its hard to see them. Its no life. It is hard to know how much of what the women have told me is true. Most of them claim they didnt know anything about the brutality of is, and say they stayed at home and cooked. None of them showed any remorse. While europe and the west decide how to deal with them, their children are stuck here, detained for crimes they did not commit. You can see more on that story on panorama on bbc1 at 8 30pm tomorrow night. Borisjohnson has pledged £1. 8 billion in a one off funding boost for the nhs in england. The Prime Minister said it would go towards vital new kit and upgrades for 20 hospitals. Labour says the pledge is significantly short of the amount needed by the nhs, and would not reverse years of cuts. Here is our Political Correspondent nick eardley. Popular, but often controversial. All politicians want more money for the nhs. The government has already promised billions to meet that contentious £350 million a week figure. Now, borisjohnson is offering more, he says to fulfil his Brexit Campaign promises. Tomorrow, he will pledge £1. 8 billion for the Health Service in england. £1 billion for things like beds and equipment, £850 million for urgent repairs to 20 hospitals. The Health Service is betterfunded now than ever before in its history, and £1. 8 billion is nothing to be sniffed at. It is a significant commitment, on top of what was already a very significant commitment to the nhs. Boris has made it absolutely clear the nhs is a priority. But is the new funding, less than nhs englands weekly budget, enough . Health groups say there is a backlog of repairs amounting to £6 billion. The ceilings are collapsing in wards. Sewage pipes are bursting. Cancer patients are getting diagnosis appointments cancelled because of old, faulty equipment. And its because the tories have done these smash and grab raids on the investment budgets, cutting £4 billion. This is one of a number of new spending pledges from number ten. We have already been promised more cash to prepare for a no deal brexit for policing, for transport infrastructure, too. The government says it is all possible because the economy is in a strong place. But others think it will all mount up and inevitably mean more borrowing. And might it all be borisjohnson preparing for a general election . His allies say no. But, with the spending taps flowing again, who would rule one out completely . One of britains oldest men has died aged 111. Alfred smith had his last birthday on 29 march, the same day as britains other oldest man, robert weighton, also 111. It is not known who was born earlier in the day. Mr smith was a farmer who credited porridge and having an enjoyable job as the secret to his long life. That is pretty good news for me, that. Now its time for a look at the weather, with ben rich. After a dramatic end to the weekend with vicious thunderstorms in places, we can expect further torrential downpour is here and there as we head through the coming week. It wont be raining everywhere all the time, but where the rain does show up, it could be pretty intense. Could cause some disruption. Low pressure once again seizing control of our weather. You can see these lumps of cloud circling around the centre of the low on the satellite picture. We start monday with two bands of showery rain, one moving across northern scotland, one moving across east anglia and the south east of england. Now, this area of showers here should tend to clear away through the day. By the afternoon, much of england and wales should be dry bright, with some sunshine, a few showers for wales in the south west. We will keep a scattering of downpours for Northern Ireland and scotland. 19 25 degrees and what will be a fairly breezy day. During monday evening some heavy bursts of rain will move across shetland. There will be some dry weather, some clear spells elsewhere, but showers racing back in from the west across Northern Ireland into western scotland and the north west of wales. 0vernight temperatures, 12 degrees for stornoway. Aberdeen 15, for plymouth and london. Our area stornoway. Aberdeen 15, for plymouth and london. 0urarea of low stornoway. Aberdeen 15, for plymouth and london. Our area of low pressure really makes its move as we get into tuesday. The centre of the low is likely to drift across the northern half of the uk. So that will drive the most intense and most widespread showers through Northern Ireland, Northern England and up into scotland. Further south there will be some showers, yes, but not as many. They will be quite breezy in the south, but further north very light winds. The showers in northern scotla nd light winds. The showers in northern scotland because of those light winds could be very slow moving so some locations could get a real drenching. And we stick with a slightly cooler, fresher feel as well. 18 23 degrees. Now, this is how wednesday shapes up. It is a similar looking day, actually. Heavy showers through Northern Ireland, Northern England. Not as many showers, those temperatures 19 in belfast, 22 degrees in norwich, and for thursday, fewer showers at this stage. More dry weather and some spells of sunshine. However, that drier interlude will not last. 0n friday we are expecting some heavy and persistent rain. Risk winds as well to swing in from the west and that will leave us for low pressure for next weekend, so it stays very u nsettled. Hello
