Makeup: A Glamorous History
9pm, BBC Two
The makeup artist Lisa Eldridge presents this series examining what the history of makeup can reveal to us about the social and political realities of the past. In this first episode, she begins with the Georgians, the 18th-century society obsessed with ostentation – often revealed through their flamboyant dress, wigs and white makeup. Eldridge recreates the toxic white face paint with pharmacist Szu Shen Wong and researches the life of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.

‘Bake Off’ for makeup returns to BBC Three, its new host and judges Val Garland and Dominic Skinner talk about guiding the young, diverse artists through the competition

Last modified on Tue 20 Apr 2021 06.30 EDT
When lockdown shut the nation indoors, many experimented with sourdough, sculpting and sewing – anything to occupy our hearts, minds and hands to distract us from impending doom. So it seems only natural that the telly world reflected that, serving up our distractions in competition form. Stuart Heritage wrote last week that the Great British formula may have reached saturation point as The Great Pottery Throw Down, The Great British Sewing Bee and all the rest are joined by All That Glitters, taking the format down the jewellery line. However, this week, Glow Up also returns to BBC Three, taking on one thing most of us have done significantly less of over the past year: makeup.

Will Young Thanks Spencer Matthews For 'Mature' Response After Calling Out 'Least Gay' Comment
The singer took issue with a remark Spencer made during an appearance on This Is My House last week.
Will Young has thanked Spencer Matthews for his “mature” response after calling out the reality star for comments he made during an appearance on This Is My House.
Earlier this week, Will voiced his upset after Spencer was heard questioning which of a line-up of four men was the “least gay” while trying to work out who was the real owner of the home seen on screen.

Val Garland on Glow Up season 3, mannequin make-up, and her love for Bimini

Ahead of tonight’s new season of Glow Up, we catch up with the legendary make-up artist and judge to find out what’s in store
“Professional skills can be learned on the job, but you cannot teach creativity,” Val Garland tells viewers as aspiring make-up artists scurry around her, frantically gluing their brows down, squirting red drops into their eyeballs, and covering themselves in glitter while Maya Jama reminds them time is running out – that’s right,
Following two successful seasons, the series returns to our screens tonight with a fresh crop of 10 MUAs all hoping to prove they have what it takes to impress the judges and avoid getting told, as one contestant does in the opening episode, that they look like the talking tree in a pantomime. Back in the judges chairs once again are senior MAC make-up artist Dominic Skinner and the legendary Garland, this year joined by Jama who replaces Stacey Dooley as host and sympathetic ear to the contestants all battling it out to win a contract to assist the world’s leading make-up artists.

Will Young thanks Spencer Matthews for responding with 'maturity' after 'least gay' remark

Will Young has thanked Spencer Matthews for responding with 'maturity and respect' after his complaints about BBC show This Is My House.
The singer, 42, was left offended on Monday after the former Made in Chelsea star, 32, asked who 'the least gay' person was on the BBC reality show, and it seems Spencer responded to him privately.
Giving fans an update on his Instagram on Tuesday, Will said: '@SpencerMatthews has had the maturity and respect to respond in a very understanding way and I completely appreciate it. Thank you sir.'
Interaction: Will Young thanked Spencer Matthews on Tuesday for responding with 'maturity and respect' after he criticised the star for 'reaffirming gay stereotypes' on This Is My House (pictured in September 2019)

After competing together on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, they showed they were also in sync away from the ballroom as they embarked on a romantic relationship.
But Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton showed that things are a little less harmonious while watching TV, when they had a playful row over Line Of Duty on Sunday.
Stacey, 34, took to Instagram to share video footage of herself disagreeing with Kevin, 38, over his insistence they he'd likely be 'stopping and rewinding' the most recent episode to catch all of the clues.

Poorer Brits hit hardest by Covid pandemic due to high levels of income inequality

Poorer Brits hit hardest by Covid pandemic due to high levels of income inequality
Ryan Sabey
Apr 17 2021, 19:55 ET
POORER households were thrown into the pandemic with a “weak foundation” due to high levels of income inequality compared to other countries, a new study shows.
Research reveals lower savings, more debt and a weaker social security safety net than in France and Germany left some Brits with less resilience to deal with the crisis.

Our to the biggest Netflix TV shows not to miss this week

On Demand - Stowaway (Netflix, from Thu)
If the cast is anything to go by, this sci-fi movie should be a real winner - Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Toni Collette and Shamier Anderson all feature. Directed by Brazilian film-maker Joe Penna, who also co-wrote the script with Ryan Morrison, it focuses on the crew of a spaceship en route to Mars. However, someone has accidentally stowed away, causing severe damage to the craft's life support systems. As their resources begin to dwindle, those on board must find a way to deal with their new circumstances or face certain death. While the ship's commander and biologist favour a solution based on clinical logic, a medical researcher with a very different idea tries to stand up for what she believes in.

Kate Humble
Escape to the Farm with Kate Humble (C5, 8pm)
KATE HUMBLE bought this little part of Wales ten years ago, dreaming of a self-sufficient life, growing her own produce and breeding her own livestock. Now the farm is packed with pigs, cows, sheep and goats – but it’s 24/7 hard graft. We rejoin Kate as she makes the most of some blue skies and sunshine to take a hike with her dog Teg up one of her favourite mountains. Meanwhile, back at ground level, it’s a tense time for Kate and her friend and mentor Tim. The farm’s finances are on the line, as their flock of breeding sheep is scanned to find out how many, if any, lambs each ewe is carrying.

The chaotic charm of BBC Two's This Is My House

The chaotic charm of BBC Two’s This Is My House
Nothing about this absurd TV show should make for enjoyable viewing – but somehow, it does.
This Is My House.
The BBC One show, (Thursdays, 9pm), features four “homeowners” who show presenter Stacey Dooley around a house – and attempt to prove that they live there. Three of them are actors though, likely thankful of a lockdown gig. All four homeowners are given identical names, and instructed to tour the house, explaining why they moved to the area, where they bought their furniture, and claiming the real homeowner’s partner or family is their own.

Elsewhere in the show guest John Barrowman appears to win his own point after being given the equally offbeat opportunity to mimic a shark.

Banter: Laura plays parenthood laughs during the next installment of the popular E4 show after host Keith Lemon offers her a point for mimicking a 'half Irish, half Scottish baby'
Down the hatch: Taking on the challenge, Laura appropriates a common stereotype by pretending to be drunk, much to her fellow panelists' amusement

England Lionesses continue their preparation for the UEFA Women’s Euro tournament next year
Live International Women’s Football (BBC Four, 7pm)
BACK in April 2019, England’s suffered a hiccup in their World Cup preparations as Canada prevailed in a close game at the Academy Stadium in Manchester, Christine Sinclair scoring the only goal. The Lionesses, now under coach Hege Riise, will be looking for looking for revenge tonight as they continue preparations for the UEFA Women’s Euro tournament next year. The Canada team is coached by a very familiar face – Bev Priestman – who was Phil Neville’s assistant at England before leaving that role to take over the North American nation.

TV PREVIEWS: Paul Whitelaw celebrates Greta Thunberg and is intrigued by bleak psychological thriller Too Close

Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World – BBC1, Monday, 9pm
The world-renowned environmental activist has galvanised millions in the fight against climate change. Towards the end of 2019, she took a year off school to examine the effects of global warming first-hand. A co-production between the BBC and PBS, this vital series follows Thunberg as she travels around the world – by boat – to meet leading climate experts. In Canada, she encounters melting glaciers and evidence of our biodiversity crisis. She also witnesses the devastating after-effects of California’s worst ever wildfire. Meanwhile, Thunberg and her supportive father discuss the pressures they’re under, although she’d clearly rather not talk about herself at all: “I don’t want you to listen to me, I want you to listen to the science.”
