Just use the hashtag bbcthebriefing we start with some breaking news there has been a volanic eruption on an island in new zealand popular with tourists. Its reported that around a hundred people were in the area and that some are unaccounted for. The volcano, on white island, is about 30 miles off the countrys north island. The prime Ministerjacinda Ardern has been speaking in the last hour. Lets have some of what she had to say. Police search and rescue as supporting the National Emergency agency following an eruption at white island. Police were alerted at 2 17pm. At this stage, and please do keepin 2 17pm. At this stage, and please do keep in mind this is an evolving situation, but at this stage, we believe that 100 people were on or around the island at the time, and some of those at this stage are unaccounted for. A number of people are reportedly injured and are being transported to sure. I do want to share that this is evolving, at this stage it does appear to be a very significant issue, particularly the scale of those affected at this stage. Live now to sydney and our correspondent, shaimaa khalil. What more can you tell us . It is an evolving situation, as we understood before there were 100 people, police have updated that number to 50. We do know that several people have been moved to sure with at least one who is critically injured. Local reports from new Zealand Media have been saying that some who were taken oii been saying that some who were taken on shore were covered in ash. From people on the island are still unaccounted for and police are working with Emergency Services for search and rescue operations, we also know that helicopters are hovering around the area on a very Difficult Mission because of all the smoke and the debris, looking for people there. That is because when the eruption happened, mid afternoon new zealand time, tourists could be seen around the rim of that area, so there are still concerns about those unaccounted for stopping you have mentioned in the intro that despite this being one of the most active volcanoes in the area, this is also a very popular Tourist Destination with scenic flights, many tourists go there for the area itself and for how beautiful it is, but the search continues for those who are unaccounted for. Police are also warning People Living close to the area of potential ash all and people have been told to stay indoors. As you are hearing from the Prime Minister as well, Jacinda Ardern, this is very much an evolving situation. A popular tourist site, as you mentioned. Bbc online was saying there was a live feed moment for the eruption that showed a group of visitors inside the crater. Thats it. And this is basically the la st thats it. And this is basically the last scenes we have seen before the eruption, that tourist have been seen quite close to that area, and this is really the concern for their well being, for their this is really the concern for their well being, for their whereabouts, but also really a concern to get to them in time, given how treacherous this area is right now, given how difficult the terrain is right now. The race against time isjust to get people off the island for treatment as fast as possible, to search for people who are still unaccounted for. Very difficult conditions as well because of the very when the erupted, you could see pictures, you could just see how heavy the smoke was well beyond that area and the debris, so Emergency Services and Police Services as well as those searching that helicopters are going to have a very Difficult Mission at finding those who are still unaccounted for. Thank you very much indeed. A number of people are unaccounted for after a volcanic eruption in new zealand and as many as twenty are reported to have been injured. We will keep you up to date with any more news we get on that as this programme progresses. The new president of ukraine is to meet his russian counterpart face to face for the first time, with the conflict in Eastern Ukraine top of the agenda. Volodymyr zelensky and Vladimir Putins talks in paris hope to end five years of violence that have claimed more than 13,000 lives. Gareth barlow reports. After five and a half years of a frozen conflict in ukraines bridget east, there is hope of a thaw in relations between moscow, ukraine, and russia. The crisis began after the annexation of crimea in 2014. The following month, pro russian rebel forces seized territory in Eastern Ukraine, prompting a better conflict with Government Forces. A failed ceasefire months later storefronts and germany broker a second agreement in early 2015 to try to reduce tensions. And this year, the path to peace added pace after one, a former actor, ukraines president ial election with a signature pledge to solve the crisis. To do so, he has had to make concessions, to the ire of many ukrainians, thousands of whom protested on sunday, calling on the president to stand firm against moscow. This month, Government Forces retreated in three key areas at russias insistence. Volodymyr zele ns ky at russias insistence. Volodymyr zelensky has also had to accept the agreement, that if Fair Elections are held in rebel areas, the regions are held in rebel areas, the regions are given special status and and agree of autonomy. More than 13,000 people have died during the conflict stopping the impact on ukrainians, painfully clear. But what is not so clear is the role of russia and america. Support for ukraine is waning in washington, and while russia has made demands ahead of the talks, Going Forward it is not certain. The hope is that the first face to face talks between ukraines president and president putin will see action and an eventual end to the deadly conflict. Jonathan charles, director of communications at the European Bank for reconstruction and development joins me now. You know ukraine well, ill imagine you have involvement with ukraine . Ukraine is one of our biggest countries of operation, very good to see you, by the way. We invest about 1 billion euros per year, i will be there in kyiv this coming friday. What do you make of this meeting today . You have got to individuals, the very experienced latimer putin, president of russia, and Volodymyr Zelensky, not long an office in ukraine. And not long on politics yes, he was an actor, anybody who has seen his Comedy Programme will no doubt laugh at it. There are major signs from france and germany that they would like to try to see whether it is possible to resolve this five year old dispute, the invasion and the operations that took place in crimea and Eastern Ukraine, to see if there is a possibility of attempting to bring these two sides, russia and ukraine, together in some sort of agreement. That will be tough, and i think that will be tough. Both sides, for different reasons, will find it hard to reach a peace settlement, but i think on the other hand these are the first talks for a long time and we should be grateful. That in itself could be seen as some sort of positive progress, the fact that these two men are going to meet and talk to each other from here on an. Perhaps we could see some sort of resolution. Absolutely, but they are to people under great pressure. Volodymyr zelensky might want to see if its possible to reach an agreement on Eastern Ukraine with russia but he is under a lot of pressure from those people at home to say no concessions, this conflict has been going on for a long time, you cannot give the russians something that would allow them. But there are still a lot of people and Eastern Ukraine that want to be under. Yes, there are definitely people there that feel that the future does not light looking west they prefer to look east. Thank you for now. Jonathan is back for our news briefing later in this programme. We have a lot to discuss then lets brief you on some of the other stories making the news last ditch attempts to woo voters are underway in the uk, just three days before the general election. Russia is facing a 4 year ban on competing in all major sports and hosting Major International events after failing to comply with the demands of the world Anti Doping Agency. Theyve recommended the sanctions after concluding that russian officials were responsible for tampering with drug test data they handed to investigators earlier this year. The sanctions need to be approved by wadas executive committee on monday. 0ur moscow correspondent Sarah Rainsford reports. These are nervous times in russian sport, professional athletes training hard but unsure what lies ahead. Annas won multiple medals for her country, but russia is now sliding towards a 4 year ban from global sport, the latest twist in the doping scandal. I practice hard and istillam training. And im just trying to focus on this, because thats the area that i can control. The problems go back to the 2014 sochi 0lympics. For russia, for president putin, the games were a display of strength, superiority. Singing but the proud party ended in a huge hangover. This scientist turned whistleblower on a massive doping scheme that hed been at the heart of. Yury ganus was part of the clean up act. Under him, russias Anti Doping Agency has been praised for a new zero tolerance approach. But to return fully to the sporting fold, russia had to hand over a database of athletes test results. Thousands of entries were deleted. Yeah. Thousands . Thousands, thousands. Now, russian athletes Face Even Greater sanctions. Mr ganus told me hes come under pressure for speaking out, but he insists those officials responsible for this crisis should be removed. This is a real bad old school situation. Its impossible to continue using this approach in the future, because today we live in a tragic time in russia, in sports for russia. You still hear people here claiming this is all an anti russian campaign, denying the evidence as russia has in so many other cases. But there are also people who are amazed at their countrys capacity for self harm, that instead of moving on from this crisis and ending the isolation, russia has only made the situation even worse. This week, the Sports Ministry was busy promoting exercise for all, an active lifestyle. A ban on professional athletes would be a blow to a whole generation here. Speaks russian when i tried asking the minister who was to blame for that, who altered the database, he refused repeatedly to answer. In politics, you can play with pokerface. You can deny the undeniable thing. You can really do the bravado with your cynicism. You cannot do this in sports. You cannot do sports on your own. Of course we can have the home 0lympics, with turkmenistan and with north korea and with belarus, but everyone will laugh at it. Russian athletes have devoted their lives to much higher targets, and its their Sporting Futures now at stake. Stay with us on bbc news, well bring you the latest. Rescue workers in new zealand say up to 20 people have been injured, some critically, after the eruption of the volcano on whight island off the countrys north east will stop some have suffered burns, several other people are unaccounted for and a statement from the new zealand cruise associations as a tourist ship appeared to be caught up in the event. A big rescue operation is being mobilised in the nearest mainland town. Several dozen people we re mainland town. Several dozen people were on white island when the eruption happened. Reportedly for the First Time Since 2001. New zealands Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has described the event as very significant. The Civil Defence authorities warned the immediate vicinity remains dangerous. We are keeping a very close eye. We are expecting Justin Trudeau to address the press again very soon Jacinda Ardern. They may reveal more detail on how the rescue operation is going out there, for example, and also as well when it comes to any detail about this vault panic eruption volcanic. The geological hazard monitoring website warned that the volcano may be entering a period where eruptive activity is more likely than normal. That is something they posted on the third of december. December three, when they were trying to assess the level of activity there and whether there could be an eruption in the near future, basically we are keeping a very close eye on this. As soon as Jacinda Ardern takes two the podium we will bring you that press conference. Hello there. There is a lot of weather heading our way over the week ahead. I want to focus, though, on the next few days. It is all about wind and rain. Heavy rain and heavy winds and showers combined with gales or severe gales. Probably the strength of the wind is likely to be the bigger issue. We have had some blustery winds already, but has been blowing in a lot of showers from the west. The main focus of the stronger winds remains to the south west of england and the south and west of wales, and already we have had gusts of 70 miles an hour along the south coast of wales and into cornwall. Big waves and for a while, some heavy bursts of rain. Pretty windy elsewhere, the storm changing to more northerly by morning, feeding down cold around with it. During monday we will see slow changes. It will gradually become less windy as that ridge of High Pressure moves from the west. That is pushing the strongest of their winds over towards the north sea. So very windy, especially in the morning in those showers down the eastern coast of england and scotland. There will be a future was coming in over the irish sea into north wales. It will be a windy day. Gradually the winds will become lighter. Most places turning dry by the afternoon, but it will probably feel a bit colder than it did on sunday. With the Winds Continuing to ease during the evening, there could be a touch of frost briefly on the eastern side of the uk, but then the winds pick up later on in the night. We are drawing in some much milder hour as well. That milder outcomes with cloud and they will be outbreaks of rain, two bands of rain pushing across the country. The second one looks like we will see the heaviest rain on that, and the winds particularly squally on this point too. It should be a mild day, temperatures generally in double figures, but heavy rain and very windy conditions as well. But will sweep its way east during the evening, and taking away the mild hour, then we are all into something a bit chilly on wednesday. Low pressure towards the north west. Still the risk of gales here, otherwise it will not be as windy. It is a mixture of sunshine and showers, some of them heavy, with some hail and thunder. Over the hills in the north they could be wintriness around as well. A chilly day, especially in the breeze, and in those showers, temperatures typically six or seven degrees. This is the business briefing. Im sally bundock. France debates toughening its anti waste laws, which could see firms and individuals fined for throwing unwanted items in the bin.
