quite simply they are doing this because of inflation and the rate of price increases and the international comparisons are clear, although inflation is falling, in the uk it is not falling by as much or down to as low a level as it is elsewhere in europe in the us, —— and the us, and the bank has been talking up food prices and the amount we pay for services and the speed that wholesale, lower wholesale prices are being passed through the supply chain to us. the bank talked about crystallising risks, essentially the fear that when it comes to private sector wage growth, rings might be becoming embedded so they argued they needed to continue acting despite the impact it will have on households and businesses and we know the impact it will have on uk households and mortgage holders and also those ran singh. also a warning from the bank —— also those renting. they said the rates will be high for a while, they are expecting inflation to meet the target of the prime minister, to half inflation this year, and it will still remain above the target of the bank, 2%, into the middle of next —— the middle of 2025 which means that the interest rate will remain high for a while as well. . ., ., , let's speak now to tony yates, former head of monetary strategy at the bank of england. this is a tight rope that the bank is having to walk. is it doing the right thing?— is having to they are worrying about how high inflation is and how long it has been above its target and they have not yet seen a decisive fall in inflation back towards target but on the other hand, a lot of the pain from previous interest rate rises has yet to be felt so there is a worry that when we look back on it, they may have overdone things. eame they may have overdone things. some --eole they may have fact that people's expectations of what will happen to inflation on the streets have not really got out of whack so it seems that people do not feel the bank has not lost control and that is the main says are "false allegations" of sexual abuse and fat—shaming. three of her former dancers filed a lawsuit against the us star accusing her of discrimination, assault, false imprisonment and religious and racial harassment. in an instagram post today lizzo responded saying she usually doesn't respond to false allegations but these are as unbelieveable as they sound and too outrageous to not be accusing her of a lot of things, they relate to religious harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination, and fat shaming, essentially. some of the claims are against the production company and some of them directly against lizzo. there is a key one which is an allegation that one of the dances said earlier this year they were out in amsterdam and they had been on a world tour and they were at a strip club and the dancer felt pressurised into touching a naked performer in a strip club as lizzo was chanting her name until she did so. in the statement from lizzo, it is quite vague and it does its success. dagmar turner was able to play her violin during the proceedure to remove a tumour — which her surgeon said was an indicator that no damage was being done to the part of the brain responsible for her hand movement. they've been speaking to our reporter, wendy hurrell. it was a musician's need to play violin after removal of a brain tumour and a surgeon's understanding of the intrinsic value of music that led to this moment in medical history. my oncologist was very, very good. he said to me, "dagmar, we need a plan." only that plan didn't involve my music. so in the end, i said to them, "do you think i should play my violin during operation?" and he looked at me and said, "well, we need to discuss this with the professor, but what an interesting idea." i said, "yes, we can try that." and the rest is pretty much history. music was so important to dagmar's quality of life and everything that she was. she was kind of hesitant to have this conversation with somebody who was a great surgeon but didn't understand the musical side, whereas because of my musical background, i felt that, ok, we can at least have that conversation. now they're part of the newly refurbished hunterian museum at lincoln's inn fields. pretty cool, isn't it? it is pretty cool. i mean, as a medical student, i mean, this is hunterian museum, royal college of surgeons, probably the most coveted museum of anatomy and surgery in the world. as a medical student, you only dream of actually coming to london to see this. now, we are both, thanks to dagmar, part of this for generations to come. so, this is really massive. it did sort of take off around the world, that picture. yeah, somebody asked me for a violin lesson from south africa. and i said to someone, i said, look, what do you expect? i'm a woman, i'm blonde, and theyjust take most of my brain out. they didn't put it back in. and you expect an answer from me? and the guyjust looked at me, like, "i'm so sorry." and as you can see, we haven't knocked out her sense of humour centre in the brain at all! it works perfectly well! yeah, but i'm german. i never had any! she's from germany and she arrived in the uk and the tumour was discovered. i was born in iran, travelled, lived in the uk and some other fate brought us together to deliver this one operation. and that is interesting, isn't it? that's how we ended up in the hunterian museum. yes, exactly. how we ended up in the museum, absolutely. wendy hurrell, bbc news. what a lovely story. scientists say a prehistoric whale discovered in south america could be court hearing later today for allegedly plotting to overturn the 2020 presidential election. he will be appearing in front of the federal courthouse in washington, dc at about four o'clock local time which is eight o'clock gmt. we will have coverage of that here. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. the weather is not looking too bad over the next couple of days, generally sunshine and showers knocking around. however, as we head into saturday, it's going to turn very wet, particularly so across northern ireland, england and wales. and bear in mind, parts of the south of the uk, even though we're only three days into the new month, have already had a third of the average rainfall. there's more on the way, as i say. today is an ok day, though. sunny spells and passing showers. the showers probably most frequent across parts of the midlands running into eastern england. quite a few showers for northern ireland, but they'll tend to be quite light and i suspect the showers become a little bit less widespread for wales and south west england. so more in the way of dry weather here increasingly through the afternoon. so some of you will stay dry with sunny spells coming through from time to time overnight. a few more showers will keep going, particularly around coastal areas and especially across northeast england, north and east scotland. temperatures about 11 to ia degrees overnight. and then tomorrow, yeah, it's another showery kind of day. however, as we head into the afternoon, the showers will want to concentrate in one area especially, and that's across eastern england. that's because we've got one of these convergence zones where the winds bash together. it will concentrate the showers here. but if you're away from that, for example, across wales, western england, parts of northern ireland, west scotland, it should be largely dry tomorrow afternoon with some fairly decent sunshine coming through, but temperatures still a bit below par for the time of year. it's through friday night and into the weekend that we've got our next batch of really wet weather to come through. also very windy, too. now the heavy rain will initially start off in northern ireland. quite gusty winds here for a time too, before it works in across england and wales, especially as we go through saturday. and with gusts of wind around 50 or 60mph across parts of wales, 40—50mph or so for parts of southern england, could bring some localised disruption. then we've got the heavy rain too factor in as well. now it won't be raining everywhere all the time. across scotland it'll be ok. sunny spells here a few passing showers, but the unsettled theme does continue, i'm afraid, through sunday and into the early part of next week as well. however, after that, it looks like we'll see our first area of high pressure building in for some seven weeks, and come thursday, might only last a day or two, it looks like we'll see something drier, sunnier and warmer. temperatures in the warmest spots could reach the high 20s or even low 30s. this is bbc news. the headline: the bank of england raises interest rate to 5.25%. donald trump faces another day in court. the full round—up from the world cup. hello from the bbc sport centre. the women's world cup has lost another heavyweight. after brazil and canada, now germany have failed to reach the knockout stage for the first time in what's being descirbed as the biggest shock the tournament's ever seen. they could only draw i—i with south korea in brisbane, needing a win to assure progression. the second—ranked team in the world couldn't find a winner and now they're out of a competition they've won twice. the two teams to go through were playing each other in perth. and morocco's 1—0 win over colombia, provided by anissa lahmari, was enough to send them through at the expense of germany, who they lost to 6—0 in their opening game. morocco are ranked 72nd in the world and the only one of the eight debutants to make it through to the last 16. i think they're the lowest ranked team coming into the world cup.
