The United Nations and humanitarian groups on the ground have said the total siege by the Israeli Government has brought gaza and its Health Care System to the brink of collapse. On the Israeli Palestinian conflict i will say that one thing to remember is that the George W Bush administration and the obama administration, it is not as though there was a lack of desire to advance this. But if you look at the support for the two state solution within the region itself among israelis and palestinians alike, they had grown disillusioned. You have a departure of the palestinian Prime Minister who the us worked closely within 2013 so some us policy motivated by opportunity. The Trump Administration and the Biden Administration were taking the opportunities that were in front of them and sometimes even for a country like the United States which is very powerful, you cannot necessarily create opportunities which are not there. So i think you can be critical and say we could have pushed for it more here and there but so much a Foreign Policy is taking advantage or taking up the opportunities which are there rather than creating them out of whole cloth. Everyone, the president of course mentioned, that israel didnt do it, he felt confident in that. 2a hours earlier he had said we are going to look into it. It is highly unlikely that his intelligence people have decided who is responsible for that attack in any conclusive way. I and probably many other people here im sure have looked at the footage and the various evidence presented by both sides, as it were, and it is by no means conclusive. I think, if anything, thejury is no means conclusive. I think, if anything, the jury is still out, but i think we cant rule out the possibility that this was in fact an israeli air strike. It wouldnt be the first time that israeli have hit hospitals. Weve seen that in for example. So i think everyonejust sort of. You know, we cant take any sides word at face value. We have to be very, very sceptical, particularly in moments of war. But if i could also just comment on this question of the tying that hamas and russia, what they have in common is this trying to destroy democracy. The president talked about learning the lessons from 9 11, and i think like that is an example of not learning the lessons, because that mantra sounds a lot like they hate us because we are free. I think there is a real danger of deluding ourselves into thinking that this is really about democracy, that hamas is attacking democracy, and thats what the Israeli Palestinian conflict is all about. We need to be able to distinguish spin from reality michael, what is your thought on that . Do you think we are wrong and how weve been characterising, rather the president has been characterising this conflict . No, idont has been characterising this conflict . No, i dont think so, i think the president s characterisation was excellent except you can go much further with hamas. I think they do hate democracy for sure. They through their political rivals off of roofs in 2007, those were fellow palestinians, in order to enact their violent coup in gaza. Hamas hates democracy, hamas hates israel. There is a lot of things hamas finds hateful, frankly, and democracy is just one of many. So i think it is an absolutely fair characterisation, and the president s point is that if you fail to stand up to this kind of absolutely naked brutal aggression, you can only expect more of it, and i think that is absolutely a common sense, correct point. I think the speech will impress israelis and ukrainians and if he mentioned taiwan it would impress the taiwanese. Im not sure it would impress many americans. The focus is not on russia and ukraine, certainly not on russia and ukraine, certainly not on russia and ukraine, certainly not on israel and palestine, it is on our own personal security when it comes to inflation. That is what is going to determine, it seems to me, the architecture of the trajectory as we look forward to the 2024 president ial elections. But i think it was important since our own house is badly broken that he spent some time talking about the importance of Mutual Respect and understanding and condemnation of islamophobia, of anyone who hates palestinians, muslims and of course Anti Semitism. We also heard the president talk about the two state solution. His administration have said they still firmly believe that if not at this very moment, that is at least long term still the aim. Is that still in your view possible, given what we are seeing on the ground right now . What we are seeing on the ground riaht now . , ~. ,. , what we are seeing on the ground right now . Right now . So 20 years later im sitting on the white house lawn, part of the american delegation, negotiators, watching clinton and arafat signed the accord, convinced that the conflict had reached a point that we were going to try to resolve it. And yet here we are in trauma. So the first step is trauma to hope, the second is hope to trauma. Ive given up frankly saying never. Ive given up convincing myself this will never happen, this cant possibly, right . So do i think there is a chance for the two state solution right now, absolutely not. It is a talking point, it is an aspiration. Do i think if you add the right kind of leaders who own the right kind of leaders who own the negotiations and are effective at mediation, do i think its possible .
