For a new nominee. Afterjim jordans defeat, back to square one with nine potential nominees. Tonight on the panel. , We Havejournalist and broadcaster Jenny Kleeman and ron christie, whos the former Special Assistant to george w bush. We will say hello to both in a moment. Welcome to the programme. A day of big developments in gaza. According to hamas, two more hostages have been released due to poor health. Its believed they are two elderly israeli women. Also, israels intense air strikes on gaza have been continued. Take a look at these pictures. Most of the strikes have been in the north gas and, whats on in the south as well. Some gazans are reported to be moving back to the north because the dire conditions in the south. Part of that is due to aid. These are the pictures of some aid getting across, 20 trucks across the border, hundreds a day are needed, though, according to the un, and in amongst the aid, food and water, still no fuel, and fuel is needed for hospitals and other vital services. Israel says fuel could be taken by hamas, so no fuel thus far. Lets get back to the latest developments we have been hearing over the last 90 minutes or so about two hostages being released by hamas. You may remember to were released, and now two more, according to hamas. We have a couple of details about that. We know an intermediate helped facilitate the moving of those two hostages, and as we wait for more details about them, lets hearfrom paul martin, who, until this month was, hamas first and only british prisoner. He started telling me about his experience being a captive. Well, my situation was rather different to the current captives, because i was a Foreign Correspondent making a film abouta man, a young man, who had stopped Firing Rockets into israeli civilian areas, felt this was wrong, because he had become friendly on the internet with an israeli, and they started to become friends, and he didnt feel he was doing the right thing, so he stopped, which is a very dangerous thing to do, because it contradicts the entire line of hamas all along that israelis are not to be spoken to, it is a traitorous thing to do. So, he was arrested, put injail, tortured, and put on trial, a military trial. I decided it was my responsibility at least to tell that Military Court that this man was making a film, it was hardly likely to be the thing that would establish him as a spy, which he would be accused of. When i got there to give evidence, having written in advance and having been there many times before, i suddenly find myself arrested and accused of being his spy master, which was quite ludicrous but nevertheless extremely dangerous, and i was held in very difficult conditions for 26 days. And you said, difficult conditions, i dont know how much you want to talk about them, but if you can at all, just elaborate slightly . Yes, so, first night a man walked into my cell where i was handcuffed and put a gun, picked up a kalashnikov, put in six bullets into the magazine, and started to point the gun in my head, for example. And as he got closer, he started to squeeze the trigger. I thought that was the end. It turned out, after 30 seconds, he held the trigger only half way. He laughed, pointed the gun in the sky, and smashed the barrel on my knee, which relatively was a good outcome. That was the first of my 26 days. I had a couple of occasions when i thought i was seconds away from death, but during that entire period, they tried to make me sign confessions of being a spy, which was totally ludicrous. I refused to do so, but i wasnt sure if i would receive the same sort of treatment as most of the people in the prison around me, who had been seriously tortured. I presume i would have signed anything at some point. Fortunately, they seem to have had orders not to torture me, except to put me in extremely difficult psychological positions and total isolation, and eventually i was freed, largely, ithink, thanks to intervention from people like Archbishop Desmond tutu, with whom i had fought an anti apartheid battle against the regime in south africa, where i grew up. I had some international support, and some support from the british government. In the end, i was released. Not quite the same situation as these current hostages, over 200 are still there, men, women and children. That is an extraordinary, extraordinary story. Thank you for sharing it with us. I want to ask, of course, you are repeatedly highlighting the situation is a very different, and i appreciate the situations are very different, and i appreciate you underlining that. One thing i wanted to ask you, though, is about the idea of israel trying to discover things like the locations of where these hostages are being held and attempts to free them. Given your knowledge, how challenging is that . It is extremely challenging, because i do not believe that theyll be in the same place that i was in. For one thing, i went back to gaza, they apologised to me in effect, and allowed me back for a couple of days to report from gaza in 2014, and they showed me the place i had been held, and it had been destroyed by the israelis in the previous clash. They would have to have rebuilt, if they are in the same place, they would have had to rebuild it. It was opposite the National Security headquarters. There are so many locations they could be hiding people, and for example, the israeli soldier that had been held completely separately from me, and i never saw him during my captivity, was held in khan younis, which is more towards the south, and a totally different situation, and he was eventually swapped for over 1,000 hamas prisoners. That is what the israelis are trying to avoid. They do not, i am absolutely certain, want to get into a situation where they are bargaining some hostages, most of them civilians, for prisoners who they have arrested and charged and convicted for what they consider to be terrorist crimes. I think the israelis are trying to avoid that at all costs. That begs the question, what is the deal . The answer is, i dont know. Thank you to paul martin, sharing his remarkable story with me just a little earlier. Just to update you, hamas on social media have released a statement that they have released two female captives for humanitarian reasons, and we also got an update from the red cross, the International Red cross, saying they helped facilitate the release of two more hostages, and we can speak now to stephen ryan from the International Committee of the red is. The red cross. They have been at the centre of this. Welcome to the programme. The centre of this. Welcome to the programme the centre of this. Welcome to the auroramme ~. , u,. , programme. What i can say right now is that the international programme. What i can say right now is that the International Red programme. What i can say right now is that the International Red cross is that the International Red cross is that the International Red cross is relieved that two more people are able to return to their families. This underscores the neutral intermediary role that the International Committee of the red cross can play in Armed Conflict, and certainly, while we are delighted that two more people are safely home, we continue to work for the release of the remaining hostages, and continue to call for access to be able to visit them. Can ou tell access to be able to visit them. Can you tell us access to be able to visit them. As is the dialogue we have of the parties. 0ur way. As is the dialogue we have of the parties. Our goal is to not seek publicity, but to respond to questions that people have about why the icrc has such a role. It is lost to make sure we remain focused on the safe return of people to their families, because the icrc s role is to focus on how people are affected ljy to focus on how people are affected by Armed Conflict wherever they are and who ever they are. find by Armed Conflict wherever they are and who ever they are. By Armed Conflict wherever they are and who ever they are. And ust give us an idea about t and who ever they are. And ust give us an idea about how h and who ever they are. And just give us an idea about how challenging us an idea about how challenging your role is. Im talking about physically, air strikes, the conditions there, of trying to get people out safely. Our challenges are numerous, and certainly our teams, luckily we have a large number of staff based in gaza before the escalation of this conflict, responding to humanitarian needs of those affected by the fighting. There are also working wherever possible to facilitate release operations, this is an extremely challenging environment to work in, the International Committee of the red cross has a long experience working in difficult environments as well as facilitating the dialogue between different parties on issues related to hostages. I between different parties on issues related to hostages. Related to hostages. I really appreciate related to hostages. I really appreciate you related to hostages. It is great to have i some hope that hostages have been released, and these are the first hostages that have been released in this war that appears to be a war without limit, and it is great to have some hope and some sense that there is a possibility that more hostages will be released. There was a desire, this Ground Invasion that many people consider to be inevitable, there was a desire to slow it down in the hope that more hostages might be released, in the hope that there could also be diplomacy behind the scenes, and also in the hope that the us could prepare for attacks on American Basesin prepare for attacks on american bases in the event of a Ground Invasion. The delay that we have seen thus far is bearing fruit, certainly in terms of the safety of the hostages. It is good to finally be able to talk about reasons to be hopeful, and are very pleased to hear it, but it is the beginning of what i hope will be many more hostages being released, but a very long road. Youre live with bbc news. Lets ta ke lets take a look at the issue of humanitarian aid. Of the last few days, 50 trucks have crossed the border. For context, 400 500 trucks used to cross the border every day. One of the main issues as fuel, which is expected to run out in 50 days. Run out in two days. The uk prime minister, rishi sunak, set out further aid for the Palestinian People on monday, saying the government would provide an additional £20 million so 24. 4 million of humanitarian support for gaza. We have already committed £10 million of extra support to help civilians in gaza. And, mr speaker, i can announce today that we are going further. We are providing an additional £20 million of humanitarian aid to civilians in gaza, more than doubling our previous support of the Palestinian People. There are major logistical and political challenges to delivering this aid, which i discussed with president sisi. Elise labott is Contributing Editor for Politico Magazine who covered the Israeli Palestinian conflict for years. First of all, i have to ask you your response to the developing news. The release of two further hostages, which make for in total. What is your reaction to that . This which make for in total. What is your reaction to that . Which make for in total. As weve been talking about, it is your reaction to that . As weve been talking about, it is very your reaction to that . As weve been talking about, it is very good your reaction to that . As weve been talking about, it is very good news. Talking about, it is very good news that this process, whether it is with qatar or egypt, that this process of negotiation with hamas is bearing fruit. I will note that these are two israeli citizens, they were not dual nationals, so there was a feeling that may be hamas would start letting out foreign nationals or dual nationals first, and these two elderly women i understand are not in good health, and they let them out. That is good news, but it is clear that the strategy by hamas is to let them out in trickles. They have been hearing about how, and look at, hamas follows the news as well, the United States wanted the israelis. So, this is a strategy, and so expect more will be released, but they will be in ones and twos are trickles to try and drag this out as long as they can. They know that the longer they can. They know that the longer the israelis wait, Tens Of Thousands of troops wait at the border to go in, the more International Opinion turns against them. Can in, the more International Opinion turns against them. In, the more International Opinion turns against them. Can i put to you a coule turns against them. Can i put to you a couple of the lines coming turns against them. Can i put to you a couple of the lines coming out turns against them. Can i put to you a couple of the lines coming out of. A couple of the lines coming out of the us in the last couple of hours . One, us media are reporting that the Biden Administration is asking israel to delay any possible Ground Incursion, precisely because of this issue of hostages. What you make of that . I issue of hostages. What you make of that . 4. ,. ,. , issue of hostages. What you make of that . 4. ,. , ,. , that . I think there are a couple of thins that . I think there are a couple of things going that . I think there are a couple of things going on that . I think there are a couple of things going on. Even that . I think there are a couple of things going on. Even when that . I think there are a couple of things going on. Even when you i that . I think there are a couple of things going on. Even when you heard present biden the of the day, noting that very strong support for israel, it is going to give everything they need, theres also some scepticism about whether this is the best way, whether a Ground Incursion, a full on into gaza is the best way. So, yes, the. Once more time and space for the hostages to get out, but the discussions are also about whether it is good idea for a full on Ground Invasion at all, and so publicly the us is saying that it is up to the israelis to execute it the way they want, but there are us officials on the ground advising them to think through what the strategy is, what the endgame is, what the goals are and the objectives here, and i think there is a hefty amount of scepticism on the part of the us of whether the Grounding Version is a goodidea whether the Grounding Version is a good idea Ground Incursion is a good idea Ground Incursion is a good idea, and a host might hostages give another reason to delay. Is is there a realistic chance of it not happening . Is there a realistic chance of it not happening . I is there a realistic chance of it not happening . I dont is there a realistic chance of it not happening . I dont think| it not happening . I dont think there is a it not happening . I dont think there is a realistic it not happening . I dont think there is a realistic chance it not happening . I dont think there is a realistic chance of i it not happening . I dont think there is a realistic chance of a | there is a realistic chance of a Ground Incursion happening, but the question is how extensive, how big . Do have Tens Of Thousands of israeli going in was mac you can see that the israelis are trying to prepare the israelis are trying to prepare the ground, that is also giving hamas a chance to prepare their ground. Ithink hamas a chance to prepare their ground. I think what the us, and certainly some of the arab states, are recommending is something a lot more surgical, something with more precision, go in, get out, put in some specialforces, maybe not precision, go in, get out, put in some special forces, maybe not the big showing of troops and tanks marching in that we are expecting. There is definitely going to be some kind of incursion, but how full it is going to be, and how long it is going to be, i think that is certainly still being debated. I think that is another reason for the delay, because they dont really know, they know what their goal is, i dont think they exactly know what the strategy is. Lets i dont think they exactly know what the strategy is the strategy is. Lets pick up on that point the strategy is. Lets pick up on that point. Stay the strategy is. Lets pick up on that point. Stay with the strategy is. Lets pick up on that point. Stay with us, the strategy is. Lets pick up on that point. Stay with us, im i the strategy is. Lets pick up on i that point. I think part of what the us is doing, and advising, youre saying just give them a green light or blank cheque to do whatever they want to do, however they see fit. I think what part of the us israel relationship is so important is because israel does listen to the United States, and like i said, you have a lot of military advisers on the ground right now. We understand from some reporting that the us sent a Three Star Brigadier Marine General to israel to advise them on their strategy, and i dont think it is going to be, yeah, do whatever you want, we will help you out, i think it will be more, and no one is debating whether this was horrific or the extent, or whether it was the worst day of the murder of israelis since the holocaust, no one is debating that, i think it is just a question of, how is israel going to execute its goals . There is a lot of fears that israel goes in on a Ground Invasion and it could lose thousands and thousands of troops. Well, after last weeks significant stormy spell of weather, this morning was quite a refreshing change chilly but dry, with some sunshine. And into the afternoon, just take a look at Highland Scotland absolutely glorious. We did have some rain, however it was mostly down to the southwest, in particular through the isles of scilly. In the first six hours this morning, we sawjust shy of two inches of rain. So some threatening looking skies at times across cornwall. And theres more rain to come, im afraid, in the weather story as we go through the week ahead. In fact, we could see more significant rain arriving overnight tonight into the south east and across Eastern England areas where we dont need any more significant rain moving across east anglia, lincolnshire into the East Midlands, and across to parts of south yorkshire. It itll be accompanied eventually by another spell of wet weather moving through the west midlands. Now, with the cloud and the rain around, those temperatures are going to hold up. So it wont be as chilly a start, but yes, it will be wet for some, particularly across parts of lincolnshire, the East Midlands and into northern england, south yorkshire. So the rain, fairly showery in nature, but we dont need any more significant rain in these areas. So there is a Weather Warning in force here, there is a potential again for some further localised flooding. To the south of that, sunny spells and scattered showers. To the north of that, once again, not a bad day for much of scotland and the far north of england, 11 12 celsius the high. Further south, were looking at top temperatures of 15 16 celsius. Eventually, that rain will ease away, another little ridge of High Pressure keeps things quiet. And a cooler start first thing on wednesday morning, but its not expected to last, as this low will push in further outbreaks of heavy rain and strong winds at times. And easterly Wind Mightjust drive in a few showers across the east coast of scotland, sheltered Western Areas staying dry. England and wales seeing some sunshine for the bulk of the day before clouding over towards the southwest. So, that will bring some rain into northern ireland, eventually into southwest england and wales. It spills its way steadily north and east, and then, we come under that influence of low pressure. The isobars squeeze together for the end of the week thatll be piling in plenty of showers or longer spells of rain at times. Not quite as bad as we had last week, but nevertheless, that unsettled spell of weather set to continue. Hello, im lewis vaughanjones. Youre watching the context on bbc news. Its back to the Drawing Board for republicans in the us house of representatives, as they begin the process once more to pick a new speaker. Lets get some more now on the fighting in gaza, and those reports of the release of two further hostages. In response to a qatari egyptian mediation, a Quote On Social Media from hamas, we decided to release them on humanitarian and poor health grounds, and we have images of the two women. We heard from the International Red cross who were responsible for the removal of them from gaza to safety, there it there as a neutral role in facilitating their release. Earlier, i asked Amichai Chikli the minister of Diaspora Affairs and the minister for Social Equality in the Israeli Government if he knew more about the hostage situation. We dont have more details, but what i wanted to say, and to remind the viewers of the bbc, as we were speaking, a mother, 32 years old, and her son, four years old,
