Live now tojerusalem where we can speak to Lynn Hastings who is a un Assistant Secretary General and the humanitarian co ordinator in the occupied palestinian territory. It is very good to see you. Can you clarify for as firstly the situation around fuel . Does the lack of fuel mean that the un is having to scale down its operations . Down its operations . There are a number of down its operations . There are a number of factors down its operations . There are a number of factors obviously number of factors obviously impacting the operations, and one of courses fuel, which i will get to in a moment. But the other is the lack of supplies going in and of course the continuing bombardment, which makes it very, very difficult for our staff who are still trying to deliver humanitarian assistance. The fuel of course is directly related to hospitals working, and i heard your reporter theyre talking about the situation in the hospitals. If i mayjust the situation in the hospitals. If i may just give you the situation in the hospitals. If i mayjust give you a few statistics, there are 1000 patients who are supposed to be receiving dialysis treatment, 130 premature babies who are in incubators, and patients in intensive care, and of course all of them rely on electricity or fuel in order to receive their health care. Fuel also drives desalination, and most of the water in gaza is ground water, and therefore it needs to be desalinated. So there is very, very little clean Drinking Water available now, so people are resorting to drinking dirty oil cell and heated water or both. There is no electricity to be able to pump sewage into the sea, which means we are expecting the streets to be having Sewage Overflow onto them imminent li. Its something we are trying to address with the israelis to be able to bring in enough you fuel for the humanitarian operations to be able to continue to run and scale up while addressing those Security Concerns and ensuring that fuel is not diverted to hamas. You may have seen a bit of a patchwork this week where 20 trucks were slated to come in. It did not happen every single day. I think we are up to around 60 or 70 trucks. There should be some trucks going on today. It is truly a drop in the bucket. Ijust want to remind viewers that before October The 7th and the horrendous events that took place then, the amount of commodities that could go into gaza was quite restricted already. Now were down to less than a of what is going into gaza before October The 7th. So 20 trucks today is not sufficient to provide water, fuel, medication and food to 2. 2 Million People. Earlier my colleague lyse doucet spoke to husam zomlot, head of the Palestinian Mission to the uk about the humanitarian crisis in gaza and what should happen next. After the unprecedented assault into southern israel by hamas on October The 7th, and what you would know would be an unprecedented Israeli Military response, what are you calling for israel to do now . What is happening now has nothing to do with October The 7th. What is happening. Well, it was sparked by October The 7th. Nothing justifies this mass murder of civilians, live in your cameras. More than 6500, 2700 of them are children, nothing, nothing justifies the Carpet Bombing of entire civilian areas. Nothing justifies cutting water, food, electricity, fuel from hospitals. Nothing justifies that we still have 1000 people under rubble. People are hearing the cries of people under rubble and we have no rescue teams, they have been targeted, our medical sector is collapsing, nothing justifies this, so please let us not refer to this 7th of october, what is happening now could not be justified by any standards. Thats number one. Number two, we are calling for an immediate ceasefire since this began. Ceasefire for these war crimes, crimes against humanity, and this is such a dark moment for our humanity, for all of us, a dark moment for our international system. When the world fails to call for a ceasefire and we hear some western governments including the us and the uk calling for a pause. Pause for war crimes and crimes against humanity, really . We cannot enforce now, right now . And we still hear leaders like the uk Prime Minister saying israel has the right to defend itself after all that we have seen in the last 21 days. Self defence . Is threatening the lives of 130 babies in incubators now because they are running out of fuel in hospitals, is the right to self defence . Forcing 1 Million People out of their homes and then bombarding them in the south, is that the right to self defence . This is self defence . And what about the warning by the International Community that Infectious Diseases are breaking out in gaza because of the Sewage System in the streets, because people are drinking contaminated water and sea water . This an act of self defence . All of this is war crimes and the world is watching, everyone is watching. Nobody denies. The west is applying the rules on their foes, but not on their enemies. This is a dark moment. Well, nobody can deny the darkness of the moment for palestinians. The images are there, we have been reporting every day on the suffering, the rising death toll in gaza, what the United Nations describes as a humanitarian catastrophe, but we saw yesterday at the un security council, israel underlining, and that cry by israel is being repeated by western leaders, saying that israel has a right to reply because it was attacked and it feels it needs to protect its citizens and protect its borders. Really . By what we just had from the War Criminal Netanyahu announcing in his televised message that he has killed thousands of hamas fighters . Liar. A liar. You know, everybody in the world knows that he has killed thousands of our children. Lets have a. Yes. Of our children, of our families, he has wiped out entire families, he has targeted hospitals, churches. Our entire civil structure. We understand. So the conversation should not be about the cemetery, there is no equity between the occupier and the occupied, and there is no equity between a non state actor like hamas and a state like israel, that should be held to a different standard. The world has failed. The world has failed yet again. And what is this talk about the right to self defence . Dont we have a right to defend ourselves . Look what is happening in the west bank. You are youre injerusalem now, you are reporting, they may have the carnage by the settler militias, more than 100 palestinians were killed. Yes, we understand. Do we have the right to defend ourselves . We understand. Do we have the right. . Should we sit in the west bank waiting for these settlers to come and attack us . Should we defend ourselves or not . Lets have a conversation, rather than. We understand your anger, that anger has gone around the world, there have been protests filling the streets in many cities, anger at what is happening to the palestinians, but you are a representative of the palestinian authority, what can be done, because these are the discussions behind the scenes as you know, israel will not accept a ceasefire, what is the best possible option now . We have heard at the Un A Proposalfor a pause for a humanitarian ceasefire, a number of pauses may be discussed at the eu meeting in brussels. In many capitals, many leaders are trying to find a way to ease the suffering of palestinian civilians. What at this time is the best available option to protect the civilians, to get aid to the civilians . Number one, immediate unconditional ceasefire of these atrocious murderous air strikes against our people, civilians. Numbertwo, immediate and immense global operation, humanitarian, to relieve the suffering. We have no rescue teams, people are still alive and shouting. We need humanitarian en masse from all directions to elevate this unprecedented human suffering. Number three, we need to turn this tragedy into a moment of hope for the millions of people in palestine and worldwide. I have seen the hundreds of thousands here in the uk calling for justice. Ijust looked at the opinion poll this morning that 76 of the british people call for an immediate ceasefire we need to do that. We need to focus on the root causes, turn this into a momentum for peace, end this illegality and injustice once and for all, call for an International Peace conference to implement international resolutions, not negotiate them. All of these individual, in total, we know there are over 3000 of them and their families currently living in Islamabad Hotels and guesthouses paid for by the uk government. Add to all of this backdrop is the fact that as you say, pakistan has plans to deport Illegal Migrants from the country on the 1st Of November. Some of these individuals on this uk Relocation Programmes have arrived, and on their visas that were only for a few months have expired and they are worried about what will happen to them next. I was speaking to the Interior Minister here in pakistan earlier about it. He said those individuals will be facilitated in exit and leave to go to the uk. We also know that because there have been documents revealed in a court case in the uk, it shows that the uk authorities have done a Risk Assessment on what happens to those individuals whose visa has expired and they are at risk of deportation. Weve also heard about the fact that there are these charter flights that have restarted again. The first one we know has just left pakistan going to london. We know there are more planned, but of course, there are 3000 of these individuals that are still here in pakistan, waiting to be relocated. What is not clear is how quickly those can get out and how quickly those can get out and how quickly those can get out and how quickly they can be processed and how many will leave the country before that deadline of the 1st Of November. The end result of that, also mentioned in these e mails, is it is very difficult to find a large amount of accommodation for these individuals. So a lot of people were not taken out of afghanistan because they could not find suitable accommodation pakistan. We now know that from speaking to different sources, there is more flexibility from the British Government about that accommodation. We still dont know exactly where these individuals will be put up backin these individuals will be put up back in the uk when they arrive. Its good to have you with us here on bbc news.
