And rain at times. Hello, im nicky schiller. Welcome to this bbc news special on the oscars. It was 0ppenheimer s night, scooping seven awards, including best picture and also best director, and best actor for Cillian Murphy. Emma stone got best actress. Over the next half an hour, we will look at who won what. We will also look at some of those viral moments, and of course the celebrity red carpet fashion. Joining me to do that is the film critic helen ohara, and with me is our culture reporter noor nanji, Celebrity Fashion Stylist ellis ranson. Heres the best bits of the ceremony in ooh, about 60 seconds. Welcome to the 96th 0scars. Where is he . Messi im just ken. I cant open the envelope. Christopher nolan, oppenheimer. Robert downeyjunior. I would like to thank my terrible childhood and the academy, in that order. Thank you for seeing me. Cillian murphy. I am a very proud irish man standing here tonight. The 0scar goes to emma stone. My dress is broken. I think it happened during imjust ken. Oppenheimer. Any of us who make movies know. You kind of dream of this moment. Im just ken. Ryan gosling, some nudity and the dog there is more to it than that, lets go live to los angeles and Cbs News Correspondent danya bacchus. Thank you very much forjoining us. As widely predicted, it really was 0ppenheimer s night . It definitely was 0ppenheimer s night. As expected. 0ppenheimer was expected to continue its award season streak, winning streak, it did just that. It went to the oscars with 13 nominations and it came out with seven, including the top awards of the night for best picture, best director, best actor for Cillian Murphy and best supporting actorfor robert downeyjunior. Where there any surprises . A lot of people over here, emma stone beating Lily Gladstone, was that the big one, do we think . You know, i would say that that was maybe a small surprise, but not a big surprise. During award season, awards like the Golden Globes and others, which are usually predictors for the oscars, they went back and forth in winning that category. Some critics in the United States were expecting it to be a toss up, it could go either way and emma stone was the one who ended up beating out Lily Gladstone for her portrayal in poor things. Lets talk aboutjimmy kimmel he was hosting again this year, second year in a row, how did he go down . I saw he hit back at donald trump during it, for a post he had made . You know, he did hit back at donald trump, which is not surprising. Jimmy kimmel, if you ever watch him, he also has some jabs for the former president. During the show he called out the former president for a post he put on truth social that read in part, has there ever been a worse host than jimmy kimmel at the oscars . To Whichjimmy Kimmel replied, among other things, isnt it past yourjail time . Jimmy kimmel has done this multiple times and has been the host during many memorable moments during the oscars, so he is prepared for just about anything. He did what he normally does, he poked fun at the movies, he poked fun at the actors and then he had a skit withjohn sena, which i think everybody is talking about today. John cena came out on stage, practically nude to present the best Costume Award and that skit made light of an oscars moment that happened 50 years ago when a streaker ran on stage. Finally, i assume the parties are still going on in los angeles . Oh, you know they are definitely still going on. There are the after parties, the after, after parties and a lot of those parties carry on until the early morning. Right now it is about 2. 30 in the morning and i can expect those parties will continue until the sun rises. Thank you very much forjoining us from los angeles, Cbs News Correspondent. Lets talk about oppenheimer. Helen ohara is ourfilm critic. Helen, was it a surprise that it won, not really . Not really, it was very predictable this year, but oppenheimer has pretty much swept all before hit during award season. If barbie had its own wing of the box office, oppenheimer has had its own way when it came towards. He went on as the favourite, the most nominated film, came out as the most awarded film. And that kind of makes sense, in 0scar history as well as being a very good film, it is also exactly the kind of thing the oscars like to award, it is serious, it is a biopic, made by a great director and has a great cast. These are things that give you a leg up at the oscars. If you havent seen it, this is a little clip of oppenheimer featuring Cillian Murphy, take a look at this. What you take it to mean . Neutrons smashing what you take it to mean . Neutrons smashing into what you take it to mean . Neutrons smashing into neutrons. Massive explosive forces, but this time the Chain Reaction doesnt stop. It will ignite the atmosphere. We detonate an Atomic Device we might start a Chain Reaction that destroys the world. Cillian murphy won best actor and his speech was quite emotional . It definitely was, he said he was standing there as a very proud irish man and he thanks the cast and the crew for taking him through thisjourney. His concluding remarks were interesting. He said for better or for worse were all living in oppenheimers world so he wanted to dedicate the award to other peacemake rs out there. Very interesting. Afterwards he spoke to the journalist, other winners at the speech of the journalist and this is what he after. It is a little bit, lam i in a little bit of a daze. Very overwhelmed, very humbled and im very grateful and very proud to be irish. This has been a huge, huge moment for me, the movie is so special to me. Myself and chris have such a special relationship, i just feel very privileged to continue to work with him and im very proud that this is a film that is provocative and that asks questions and is challenging. Yet, so many people went to see it and i am really, i really proud of that. Helen, this is quite a moment for Cillian Murphy . It is fantastic. We in the uk have been friends of his for a long time. Peaky blinders brought him to a wide audience, but discotheque and 28 days later when he broke through. And to step up to the lead role of a film of the scale, to smash it Out Of The Park the way he did with that performance, it is fantastic. The whole of ireland is very proud of him this morning. Absolutely, lets talk about christopher nolan. He has a body of work behind him but this is his first 0scar . Yes, so many of his films were Science Fiction all superhero movies. The oscars tend to overlook genre films, theyjust do. It is telling that out of all the films he was made, he was only nominated for dunkirk, another war movie. But now he gets the win with oppenheimer. It is testament to the reputation he has built up with all of those films along the way. He also spoke to the journalists afterwards and this is what he had to say. It means i can do roles that are very heavy. I it is such a thrill to be recognised as by my peers, the nomination itself from the Directing Branch of the academy, it is very, very special to me, as was winning the Directors Guild awards, for the film to win best picture is a testament to so many different people who were involved in the i film, an Incredible Cast and crew. It was definitely oppenheimers night, but the one weve a talking about with los angeles is emma stone winning best actress . Yes, i thought there was a scenario where Lily Gladstone with take that because there was so much excitement over the first native american person to be nominated. But emma stones performance in before things and does matter is astonishing. She plays a character having the mind of a baby, the mind of a toddler, to be a fully grown a fully realised human being. She does that in two hours and it is a technical achievement. She is delightful as a person and she is well liked and well loved in la. It was a surprise a little bit, but not what you would call a shock. If you havent seen the film, give us a brief synopsis because it is quite weird . It is very weird. It is almost like a frankenstein story. She is a reborn, created human in this fully adult body when we meet her, who has to go on an adventure and grow up. Shes created by a frankenstein figure played by willem defoe and she has a relationship with his character. It is almost fantastical, almost Alice In Wonderland alike. It is no surprise it also won production design, costume and hair. Looks astonishing, it is a deconstructed kind of Victorian Era film. Lets take a quick look at the clip. These two are fighting and ideas were banging around in bellas head and heart light lights in a storm. You are always reading now, you are losing some of your adorable and you are changing. I am a changing feast. Disagreed with by harry. Just come. You are in my sun. What . It is safe to say, i think, she was surprised that she had one . It was total shock, Cells Always Act surprised when these things happen. But in emma stones case there was genuine disbelief because as we were hearing, there was a dead heat between her and Lily Gladstone. In the end it was emma stone who triumphed. She said she was completely overwhelmed to win
