This flight test aims to build on what weve learned from the previous flights while attempting a number of ambitious objectives. I would just like to direct you to the bbc website. We have a live stage at the moment which has reaction to this latest launch by spacex. And these are live pictures that are coming into the bbc newsroom from space. Lets return to our top story this error. This hour. The communities secretary, michael gove, has told mps that the governments new definition of extremism is more precise and rigorous, than the previous one. He said ministers had taken every possible precaution to strike a balance between protecting fundamental rights and safeguarding citizens. Critics have warned the change could inhibit free speech and unfairly target muslim groups. Lets listen to some more of what mr gove said in the house of commons. Across this house, i am sure that we would agree that organisations such as the British National socialist movement and patriotic alternative, who promote neo nazi ideology, argue for forced repatriation, a white ethno state and the targeting of minority groups for intimidation, are precisely the type of groups about which we should be concerned and whose activities we will assess against the new definition. The activities of these extreme right, of the extreme right wing, are a growing worry. The targeting of both muslim and jewish communities and individuals by these groups is a profound concern, requiring concerted action. And it is important, just as with our definition of extremism, to be precise in the use of language when discussing islamism. Islamism should never be confused with islam. Islam is a great faith, a religion of peace, which provides spiritual nourishment to millions, inspires countless acts of charity, and celebrates virtues of generosity, compassion and kindness. Islamism is a totalitarian ideology which seeks to divide, calls for the establishment of an Islamic State governed by sharia law, and seeks the overthrow of liberal democratic principles. It has its roots in the thinking of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, hassan al banna, the founder of jamaat e islami, abul ala maududi, and the Muslim Brotherhood ideologue, sayyid qutb. The Palestinian Branch of the Muslim Brotherhood is, of course, hamas. Organisations such as the Muslim Association of britain, which is the british affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood, and other groups such as cage and mend, give rise to concern for their islamist orientation and views. We will be holding these and other organisations to account to assess if they meet our definition of extremism. Speaking in the past hour, the leader of the opposition, keir starmer, said that the debate about extremism has to be taken very seriously and that labour would support cross party action on the subject. I think the debate about extremism has to be taken very, very seriously because there hasnt really been a review of extremism now for a number of years. There are new threats and it is important, therefore, that we all come together to look at the question of extremism and what action is now needed. What i would say is that this will only work if it is truly cross party and not divisive. And thats the spirit in which i want to enter this discussion in relation to extremism. That was the leader of the opposition, said keir starmer. That was the leader of the opposition, sir keir starmer. An Anti Corruption hotline to report corruption in the metropolitan police is being launched nationwide. The service, run by crimestoppers, was launched for the force in November 2022 and has seen almost 3,000 online reports and calls regarding the force. The hotline has been launched so that staff, colleagues, members of the public, are able to report Police Corruption through this confidential, anonymous helpline. They can do that by telephoning or they can do it online. The investigation would then get passed to the relevant police force across all of the United Kingdom for their Police Standards department and their Anti Corruption units to be investigating those crimes. What we have seen from the met s pilot of this over the last 18 months is, as you say, thousands of calls going on, resulting in 800 investigation is being launched, and a number of Police Officers facing criminal charges and of course losing their jobs. Talking to us in that capacity, can we ask you to your reaction to todays announcement by michael gove about extremism. The vast majority of the British Public are decent, human beings, who are very moderate. We are seeing some small factions of Society Operating in a more extreme way. The far right and the far left, and there has been an increase in protest, particularly across the capital. Many people taking part in protests are doing it lawfully and with good intentions, but it is always the minority who will ruin it for the others. Mr gove has made it very clear that this is not about curtailing freedom of speech. Im glad the leader of the opposition has welcomed the announcement today and has said it is right the government are focusing on trying to stop extremism. This is clearly where there are divisions and communities, where people are projecting hatred and trying to fracture communities, and it is those organisations that your vt just showed such as the pa organisation on the far right and others on the fire life that need to be stopped. It is not right, it is taking up police resource, costing the public money, it is creating fear and Great Division and hatred across the country. The government have a part to play here. The Community Secretary is the right person to be leading this, and are very much welcome todays announcements. Very much welcome todays announcements. ,. , announcements. One of the things the Community Secretary has made clear is that public money spent through colleges, schools, councils in particular, it is not. For them to be running training for staff if they are organisations linked to the promotion of any kind of hatred. I think it is sensible to do that. As i said, the British Government expect the public to be stepping up to try and calm the fractions that are growing in the minority owned the left and right on britain, in the left and right on britain, in the majority of the left and the right in britain, but this is the minority of people, and the government are trying to represent the majority and the people who are waffle across this country. Lets hear a little more reaction now to the government annoucement about extremism. Zara mohammed is the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of britain. She explained her concerns about the new definition. Muslim communities are very concerned right now about being unfairly targeted. What i should first say is that, of course, we all want to tackle extremism and we want a safe britain. What we feel michael gove and this government is doing is playing politics with extremism at the expense of certain communities, and this isnt illegal, criminalising of groups, but this is a list that the government will be putting together two label who it deems to be extreme. Now, we have had reports that this is going to be impacting Muslim Community groups and palestinian advocacy groups, groups like ourselves. And the Muslim Council of britain which has been around for 26 years has been actively working with faith communities to tackle inequalities, social mobility, fight back on covid, elderly care. So it is really appalling and quite worrying for us that groups like us could also be on this list. Now its time for a look at the weather with sarah keith lucas. Hello. You may have noticed things feeling a little milder out there today. Certainly temperatures have been on the rise, but were paying for it because its another fairly cloudy day for many of us with outbreaks of rain, too. This is the picture in bedfordshire. We have had some spells of hazy sunshine in the south and the east, but really through the rest of today, Showery Rain Affecting much of the uk. But it is certainly feeling mild, particularly in the south. Thats down to the fact that weve got the air coming in from the southwest, this warm front sitting across parts of scotland in particular. A cold front does follow on behind, so something a little cooler and showery later in the day, particularly out towards the west. But we could see 16, possibly 17 degrees in the warmest spots across parts of eastern england, Butjust Single figures across scotland. And thats because were sitting in the slightly cooler air and more persistent rain here across central scotland. Some patchy rain for Northern Ireland, Northern England and wales just drifting slowly eastwards as we head through the evening hours. So you may well catch a shower almost anywhere through this evening and overnight as well. The next band of Showery Rain Moving into the south west for the early hours of friday. For most of us, its mild night, certainly frost free, but a little bit chillier across central and northern parts of Scotland First thing tomorrow. So weve still got that more persistent rain across scotland. Nothing particularly heavy, and itll turn to snow for a time, just on top of the highest peaks. Should tend to dry up a little bit tomorrow for Northern Ireland into wales, the south west as well. So some sunnier spells, still a few scattered showers elsewhere working their way eastwards on that breeze. And top temperatures, 15, possibly 16 degrees, so a degree or so down on what weve got out there today. But friday night now were looking at heading into saturday morning, its quite a cold night, particularly in the north. Certainly a chance of some frost around here. Could be some mist and fog patches for parts of southern and eastern england, for instance, as well. More cloud on saturday, than starts to work in from the south west. So well see some showers, potentially Northern Ireland, wales and south west of england, whereas further north and east youre more likely to stay dry through the day. And temperatures for most of us, ranging between around six in lerwick to 13 in norwich. Heading through the second half of the weekend, then, into sunday, this frontal system makes its way further east. So, yes, it will bring a spell of rain around. It could be lingering for some eastern areas first thing on sunday. But then it does look like we see a return to sunny spells and a few scattered showers moving in on that breeze. Not a bad day, actually, for many of us. Some Sunshine Looks like it could break through. And, again, were in that milder air with temperatures up to around about 1a to 16 for most of us.
