Interests who are more comfortable with joe biden about the centrists, and the more progressive wing that feel if they can get a win, maybe they can get a shot at some of their things. Its been going on for about an hour and its a very different look and we have seen. Can they get the sort of election bump that you can get from a convention . Jeanne i dont think we know yet. I dont think weve seen viral moment that this went. I think it is interesting that they put joe biden out there already for a period of time weve they have some really well produced pieces and theyve had some very good speeches, i think by clyburn in particular. I think were waiting on the two biggest speeches, which will be Bernie Sanders and Michelle Obama, the highlights of tonight. Tonight is so important because they want to build this him tonight through thursday, and they have to sustain and build that audience in order to do that. Throughout the night and throughout the week. Now we turn to the economy, how the coronavirus has affected so many and how the election could determine what comes next. Summers is a special contributor to wall street we can is made no secret of his support for Vice President biden. Let me put it to you, if we did have a biden presidency, what is the main difference that might make in our economy . After all, we have a lot of problems that just wont go away. We would be competent again and we would care again. We have a government that would carry out basic functions based on expertise, like all other countries do. We have tests that came back in less than two weeks, we would have asks for everyone who needed them, we would have federal government helping states. We would have a system that worked. Alienatet insult and our allies around the world. We would be basically competent in the work of government, whether you had a conservative or a progressive ideology. Ad we would care about country that was still divided by race. We would care about middleclass people who literally were able to feed their kids because they lost their jobs because of the pandemic. We would be fighting to protect people who are unemployed, slash theirto benefits. We would be fighting to protect the ability of teachers to go to school in safe ways rather than slashing the budget for schools. Its really not very complicated , and fundamentally its about values that are pretty universal. Nobody is against being competent, nobody is against caring for all americans, and those are the things we have lost. Those are the things that joe biden has been fighting for for 40 something years in public life. Who are investors, who are in wall street and business, might say caring is great, but we need real growth, and the priorities are wrong for joe biden. Joe biden bring that back with his competence and caring . I think we should start with this. For 50look consistently years, 60 years, actually, democratic administrations produced more rapid growth to median family incomes. Democratic administrations produce more rapid growth and real wages. Democratic administrations produce lower employment. You might say that is because i dont care about business, but here is the thing. Because building from the middle out is the Economic Strategy that works, democratic administrations produce more rapid growth than corporate profits. Democratic administrations produce better returns for stock market investors. That pattern was first pointed out three decades ago, and it has continued to be true over the subsequent three decades. True with al be biden presidency. Certainly we are not looking at a strong period for American Business with the profit figures we are seeing right now, or a strong period for American Labor with the unemployment figures that we are seeing right now. See anre going to Economic Strategy that enables the United States to compete. When we alienate every other country in the world, talking canada forfs on National Security reasons, we are putting it to american exports and putting it to American Business. Economy,y to help the the way to rescue from problems that have been made by the other , bill clinton turned around the mess that he had inherited. Barack obama turned around the mess that he inherited. Jimmy carter inherited a recession. John kennedy inherited a recession. A commitment to policies that expand the economy from the middle out, going back to fdr, that has been the commitment of democratic president s, and joe. Iden will be in that tradition the historical evidence is that it works, and the historical evidence is that the trickledown, short effort to reduce the taxes of big donors doesnt work. Produces stock market bubbles that ultimately implode and lead to great recessions. And thats not the right Economic Strategy for our country. Understand oneus aspect about joe bidens plans. He has some robust plans when it comes to the climate, infrastructure and education, which will cost a fair amount of money, which he owns up to. He talks about taxes on corporations and some wealthy individuals. At the same time he says we have to be careful with taxes depending on where the economy is. Is he just going to be borrowing money so we can afford to raise taxes, or will he raise taxes from day one . That is for President Biden to declare in congress to legislate. The answers will depend on where the economy is at the time. I will tell you, though, david, budgetaryink economics is the answer in this moment. We are about to get a huge demonstration of that from the huge fiscal cliff the country is about to go over because the republicans would negotiate with the democrats. Future, thatin our is taking a burden off my children. It is taking a burden off your children. The interest rate, after correcting for inflation, is negative. Its below zero in the United States right now. But when we defer maintenance on our nations roads, when we allow our children to lose intelligence because they have to drink the water, when it takes 25 longer to fly from boston to washington than it did 50 years ago because we screw up our air Traffic Control system, when we make those noninvestments, when we allow those infrastructure deficits, they compound to burden our children much more than some accumulation of bigger debt. Yes, weve got to make the right choices about borrowing money and how much to borrow now, and in what ways we should tax those with the highest income, but thats not the important deficit we have in our country. The important deficit we have in our country is that we somehow decided we couldnt afford to invest in having pandemic readiness. We cut all those programs because people were fixated on the deficit. The important deficit in our country is we cant afford to buy tests, even though the benefit of each test that we give is probably over 1000 in terms of the costs of the that is and the disease prevented. The things that are most important, and they are not austerity economics at a moment of zero interest rates. Futuree investing in the , and that is what the Biden Program is all about. Along with making sure that everybody has a chance to share in that prosperity. Think about it. The stockoks like price of some Companies Might fail, or they might not be able to issue debt at a low interest rescue withh to the quantitative easing. When Unemployed People have hungry kids, Congress Goes into recess with the enthusiasm of the president. It is not right. Hard to fix. That news for adly good Biden Administration amidst all the problems is that there are huge amounts of low hanging fruit, whether its in protecting the environment, whether its in helping kids go to college, whether its in fixing Health Insurance, whether its in can you believe it . With were 100 people incomes of 10 million who didnt file any tax return, and the irs made no effort to go after them a few years ago. We need to country to do much better than that. All it takes is competence and caring, and thats what i think is the core of what this election is going to be about. Do we want more government like the government weve had for the last four years . Or do we want government that is competent and cares . We had pandemics and epidemics four years ago. Ebola, h1n1. They didnt change all of our lives. Thats what happens when you have competent government, and i think we can have it again. Larry summers, thank you so much. President trump has his Convention Next week, but that hasnt stopped him from campaigning. Kevin cirilli, what do you think of what is going on with the democrats at the moment . What are they doing and what is the likely white house response . Kevin highprofile democrats making their case about a threepronged problem. Arguing that joe biden is the solution, but they all have different ways of saying how, precisely, he would solve that problem. Michigannts ago, Governor Gretchen Whitmer speaking and saying she wants more help from the federal government, just within the last couple of minutes, former republican Governor John Kasich of ohio saying that hes trying to place country above party, which is fly he is backing joe biden. President told reporters earlier that john kasich is a total loser. Democrats would like to form a coalition, however there are some who are skeptical if joe biden can ultimately become the occupant of 1600 pennsylvania avenue. Kevin cirillis our chief washington correspondent. Will be joined by with an find architect of obamacare and referring back to what john kasich just said, he just told hasconvention that the u. S. Been taken down the wrong road by trump. John kasich is a republican. This is bloomberg. Welcome back to special coverage of the Democratic National convention coverage. Health care looms large for voters in just about every election but this year had it has been particularly important given the Public Health care crisis we all face. Welcome now profession professor jonathan gruber, he was a key architect of the Affordable Care act under president barack obama. Panelists as our well. Give us your view of what a President Biden might do if he were elected with respect to health care. He recognizesink what america recognizes, which is that coronavirus has shown the vital importance of personal health care coverage. Goal is to move forward to build on that law. He realizes medicare for all on a singlepayer system is not going to happen. The question is how do you get to the 20 plus billion 21 million uninsured americans, the number growing, how do you get to them by building on the strength of the Affordable Care act . Theway is by undoing destructive action the Trump Administration has taken to reduce the Affordable Care act. Its by making Health Insurance more affordable, by increasing subsidies on the marketplace exchanges. And finally, by choosing the public option which provides real competition and allows consumers to choose between public and private Health Insurance. Jeanne so in terms of some of the appeal that weve seen from progressives who have looked at the democratic platform and said if the Democratic Party isnt going to move from a profitbased Health Care System that they dont want to sign off on that, how do you respond to those people who make that claim . We have seen it made already, and should joe biden win the presidency, the likelihood is were going to hear a lot more of that from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Jonathan i think that the way you respond is that medicare for all is simply not politically feasible. What i would say back to those people is, there are three barriers to medicare for all that we dont have answers for. The first is, youve got to pay for it. The estimates are about 3 trillion. The second is, youre going to have 160 Million People losing insurance with which theyre fairly comfortable, and whether the return is better. Ad you would have to take on 1 trillion private Health Industry. None of those are good reasons not to go for medicare for all, but they are realistic reasons. I have yet to hear a good plan for doing so. People just say we should do it, they make moral, very persuasive arguments, but they are not realistic arguments about how we are going to overcome those three fundamental barriers of getting to medicare for all. Rick im proud of the fact that the reason were still having the debate about the aca is courage that john mccain took one day on the floor of the senate. Returning to the politics of bidenbernie task force that articulated much of the democratic platform that is now being adopted by this convention had some compromises in place, and a lot of language that actually talks about a singlepayer system, sort of a head nod to bernie and his supporters, giving them an opening in the future. Dont you think this will bring a lot of the republican attacks on to this ticket in the Fall Campaign . Jonathan i think the republican attacks are going to happen no matter what joe biden says. The attacks are coming to matter what. I think what the unit plat was a unity that for is would highlight the fact that it would be addressed. There are many ways it could be addressed, and maybe in some future world, some future administration, not the biden or a nearterm administration, may be able to move toward a singlepayer system, but its just not happening. Theres nothing republicans like more enter somehow pretend that joe biden advocates singlepayer, and he does not. He advocates a plan that builds on the successes of the Affordable Care act. It builds on those successes to get us closer to universal coverage in its build on trying to bring down health care costs. They have risen more slowly since the Affordable Care act passed than any other action. So approaching something light universal care is good for people who get care, but is it good for the Health Industry . Do you get a larger number people really being covered, and does it lead to more growth in the Health Care Industry . Biased, but this is one of the things i love about the Affordable Care act. It got 20 million new customers. Saw reduced uncompensated care they had to pay for. The idea here is we can expand the pie bring more people in while still continuing to have a successful Health Insurance and Health Delivery system. The point is, we all need to Work Together to recognize that theres already plenty of money in the system. Nobody has to lose. We just have to reshuffle that money in a way that essentially recognizes the fact that you have to grow more slowly. Health care quote cost dont have to fall, they just have to stop growing so fast. We can make a fair system for everyone. Rick one of the criticisms of ratioa was the embedded in a clean set resulted from it, obviously not planned in advance. It seems the biden platform looks like its going to try to attack that by creating a sort of new baselevel Health Care System that really plays off the medicare system. We know medicare is already financially stressed. Dont you think this is going to cause some issues for the medicare problem if they start loading up more lowcost insurance on the bottom of that . Jonathan first, you did something which we have to watch out for. Which is, there is no doubt that the Affordable Care act is one of the greatest victories for racial equality ever seen. Is theresying no doubt that racial inequality and health care is much smaller today than it was before the Affordable Care act. And youre right, joe biden wants a public option, medicare right now is foreseeing financial problems, but the question is how would it be price, how much would be subsidized, who would be able to get it, and for what price . Those are important decisions we have to struggle with. I agree with you, rick, that we cannot give everyone a public option for free. But that doesnt mean we cant make a public option available for free to number of low income citizens and that we can make it available on a fair buyin basis for others. There are ways to do this that are financially as possible, and thats what we need to do. Thank you so much for being with us, jonathan gruber, and m. I. T. Economics professor payment is late evening here in new york, but the day is just Getting Started over in asia. We welcome our colleague, Tom Mackenzie. Goodness knows President Trump put china front and center throughout the first term. Tom absolutely, and when you speak to people here who have the ear of senior members of the party in the government, there are two ways they are looking at this. One part wants to see trump remain in position because theyve invested time and energy trying to understand him and his team. Theres also the acknowledgment that he has undermined alliances with some allies. Others would say they want to see joe biden when in november. They feel like they could work with him on areas like Climate Change, for example. The big drawback for biden is could pressure some of those alliances and that he would focus more on human rights issues, and on the campaign trail, biden has described xi jinping as a thug. What theyre doing in terms of the shortterm, chinese officials, is trying to dial back some of the strong rhetoric we have seen previously articulated in the state media. Theyre trying to cool tensions ahead of november longerterm, as well as building out the domestic economy and trying to build alliances in the region. Thank you so much, tom, thats our colleague Tom Mackenzie reporting from beijing. Spokeor andrew cuomo earlier tonight, talking about the battle against the coronavirus. The failed federal government that watched new york get ambushed by their negligence and then watched new york suffer, but all through it, learned absolutely nothing. So today, six months after it began, the nation is still unprepared. Echoed bynts were michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. A just imagine if we had national strategy, so everyone who need to test gets one for free. So everyone has access to a safe vaccine. So our kids and educators have the resources they need to safely get back to school. We welcome congresswoman donna shalala. You are in a good position to comment on whats going on with health care in this country. You also served as secretary of hhs. What do we need to do when it comes to coronavirus in this country . Obviously what we need is national leadership, National Standards, and national purchasing. The execution can clearly be done by the state, but under National Standards, and by that i mean paying attention to the science, letting the Public Health people decide what that standard is, and making sure every state executes accordingly. That means more than math, it means more than masks, it means that in some places we may have to close down for periods of time, but we have to have testing as a strategy. Right now, its a mess. There isnt Testing Available in ppe, areas, we are short of and thats because the National Government hasnt done its role. It could have purchased all the supplies, it could have distributed them fairly, but more than anything else, it could have set a National Standard for what the expectations were. Congressman from maryland and i introduced a bill that really the National Government would do the purchasing, set standards, the states would come in with strategies to meet those standards, the National Government would fund all of it. That simply wasnt done. And that is to our tragic results. Millions of people all over the world have gotten infected, and in our country, thousands have them over 170,000, many of unnecessarily if we had had a national strategy. David congresswoman, some breaking even as we are talking, oracle talking about tiktoks operations, taking us back to china. It brings us back to coronavirus itself youd President Trump blames china for not jumping on this earlier and not fully disclosing the coronavirus. There have been reports china might be trying to steal intellectual property for a vaccine. As part of the problem china . The problem part of was china, no question, but we did not start early enough. We knew about the breakout of coronavirus in china and we did not act immediately. We had that information. The cdc had the information, it was reported to the white house, to the secretary of hhs, and we did not put the strategy in place immediately. Because theound president did not take it seriously. We can blame china at the beginning, and china is stealing intellectual property what is new there . They have been doing that for years. And frankly, the idea that a vaccine and the information about a vaccine would be stolen would be stolen, taken by another country, listen, the scientists will make this public. We will all know what the scientific basis is, the underlying information, the studies on a vaccine. It will be shared with the world. Right now, the cdc and nih have commissioned a study from the National Academy of medicine to give them strong recommendations on how the vaccine ought to be distributed. I dont think its anything new with china stealing intellectual property, trying to steal a vaccine from us. There is no way to steal it from us because the information is going to be available to everyone. It will not be proprietary. Science is not proprietary when it is involved in saving lives. Congresswoman, i wanted to ask you, you just referenced the development of a vaccine and the issue of distribution and previously you mentioned problems with the distribution. Do you have any concerns that under a Trump Administration, if and when a vaccine is developed, we would experience similar challenges with distribution of a vaccine . That something we are hearing an awful lot about. Thats why i referenced the National Academy of medicine and there recommendation. Recommendation. Let me be clear, i dont expect a vaccine to be ready until abided in estrogen, and they will have a clear plan for distribution. Until a Biden Administration, and they will have a clear plan for distribution. We are going to build out our asrastructure to make sure many people as possible get the flu vaccine, right now about 45 get it. We need to get to 70 or 80 . That will give us the infrastructure for the distribution of a vaccine for coronavirus. David congresswoman, it is great to have you with us as always. Waiting right now for Bernie Sanderss remarks, scheduled to begin any moment right now. One of the highlights, beside show obama, which we will also bring you. Now we go to the convention in Bernie Sanders. Senator sanders who is going to tell me . You are going to tell me . Welcome to the world of virtual conventions. We just heard a countdown for 25 seconds. With ourll been here zoom calls. Ranlly, Bernie Sanders, who against joe biden for the nomination and came up short second time in a row, also came up short to Hillary Clinton four years ago. This is the second time he has to support a candidate he opposed, as we wait for the in liven, the way we do television, for Bernie Sanders. Five seconds, here we go. We are waiting for Bernie Sanders, the senator from vermont. Senator sanders good evening. Our great nation is now living in an unprecedented moment. We are facing the worst Public Health crisis in 100 years and the worst economic collapse since the great depression. We are confronting systemic racism and the enormous threat to our planet of Climate Change. In the midst of all of this, we have a president who is not only incapable of addressing these crises, but is leading us down the path of authoritarianism. This election is the most important in the modern history of this country. In response to the unprecedented crises we face, we need an unprecedented response, a Movement Like never before, of people prepared to stand up and fight for democracy and decency, and against greed, oligarchy and bigotry. And we need joe biden as our next president. Let me take this opportunity to say a word to the millions of people who supported my campaign this year and in 2016. My friends, thank you for your trust, your support, and the love you showed jane, me and our family. Together, we have moved this country in a bold, new direction , showing that all of us, black and white, latino, native american, asian american, gay and straight, nativeborn and yearn for a nation based on the principles of justice, love and compassion. Our campaign ended several months ago, but our Movement Continues and is getting stronger every day. Many of the ideas we fought for that test a few years ago were considered radical are now mainstream. But lets be clear if donald trump is reelected, all of the progress we have made will be in jeopardy. Basic, this election is about preserving our democracy. During this president s term, the unthinkable has become normal. He has tried to prevent people from voting, undermined u. S. Postal service, deployed the military and federal agents against Peaceful Protesters, threatened to delay the election, and suggested he will not leave office if he loses. This is not normal, and we must never treat it like it is. Under this administration, authoritarianism has taken root in our country. I and my family, and many of yours, know the insidious way authoritarianism destroys democracy, decency and humanity. As long as i am here, i will work with progressives, with moderates, and yes, with conservatives, to preserve this nation from a threat that so many of our heroes fought and died to defeat. This president is not just a threat to our democracy, but by rejecting science, he has put our lives and health in jeopardy. Trump has attacked doctors and scientists trying to protect us from the pandemic, while refusing to take strong action to produce the masks, gowns and gloves our Health Care Workers desperately need. While rome burned. Golfs. Both spewed his actions have resulted in over 170 thousand deaths and a nation still unprepared to protect its people. Negligence hass exacerbated the economic crisis we are now experiencing. Began, overndemic 30 Million People have lost their jobs, and many have lost their Health Insurance. Millions of working families are wondering how they will feed their kids, and they are worried they will be evicted from their homes. How has trump responded . Instead of maintaining the 600 a week unemployment supplement that workers were receiving and the 1200 emergency checks many of you received, instead of helping small businesses, trump concocted fraudulent executive orders that do virtually nothing to address the crisis while threatening the very future of Social Security and medicare. But the truth is that even before trumps negligent sponsor this pandemic, too many hardworking families have been caught on an economic treadmill with no hope of ever getting ahead. Nationr, we must build a that is more equitable, more compassionate, and more inclusive. I know that joe biden will begin that fight on day one. Let me offer you just a few examples of how joe will move us forward. Joe supports raising the minimum wage to 15 per hour. This will give 40 million workers a pay raise and push the wage scale up for everyone else. Joe will also make it easier for workers to join unions, create 12 weeks of paid family leave, fund universal prek for three and fouryearolds, and make childcare affordable for millions of families joe families. Joe will rebuild our crumbling infrastructure and fight the threat of Climate Change by transitioning us to 100 Clean Electricity over the next 15 years. These initiatives will create millions of good paying jobs all across our country. We are the only industrialized nation not to guarantee health care for all people. While joe and i disagree on the best path to get universal coverage, he has a plan that will greatly expand health care and cut the cost of prescription drugs. Further, he will lower the eligibility age of medicare from 65 down to 60. To help reform our broken criminal justice system, joe will end private prisons and detention centers, cash bail, and the school to prison pipeline. And to heal the soul of our nation, joe biden will end the hate and Division Trump has created. He will stop the demonization of immigrants, the coddling of white nationalists, the racist dog whistling, the religious bigotry and ugly attacks on women. You, tods, i say to everyone who supported other candidates in the primary, and those who may have voted for donald trump in the last election, the future of our democracy is at stake. The future of our economy is at stake. The future of our planet is at stake. Defeat come together to donald trump and elect joe biden and Kamala Harris as our next president and Vice President. My friends, the price of failure is just too great to imagine. Thank you. Sandersenator bernie giving his remarks to the virtual democratic convention. We want to come back to our contributors. It struck me, what a difference for years makes. I dont member that kind of speed from Bernie Sanders when he lost to Hillary Clinton. Just not at all, he started talking about running again and did not help her at all. I guess he learned his lesson that donald trump may be worse than Hillary Clinton. But this was a party consolidation speech. He was ready to take one for the gipper and was all in for joe biden. Even barely mentioning the slight this agreements they have on Health Care Policy and universal coverage. I thought it was an amazing speech in the sense that if anyone thought joe biden was going to have trouble with the left flank of his party, i think that is over now. David how much credit does joe biden deserve for that . Some people think maybe joe to the left to embrace Bernie Sanders specifically. Jeanne i think he did and thats where i wanted to go. This is a credit to joe biden and the Unity Task Force where he, unlike Hillary Clinton, obviously a different time and different people and campaigns, but joe biden did the work of bringing in the sanders campaign, the sanders folks, and you see the result of that work tonight. These conventions really do show how somebody is going to work when they get into the white house if they make it that far. I think joe biden has made a mark here and done himself some good work. David weve heard from Bernie Sanders and were about to hear from Michelle Obama. Before that, we want to check in on the markets. Sophie kamaruddin has a full report. Sophie i want to start with the laggards in the region. Huaweiway suppliers suppliers lighting in taiwan after there was more pressure. David im so sorry, we wanted a full report that shall obama is up a bit Michelle Obama is up a bit early. I love this country with all my heart and it pains me to see so many people hurting. I have met so many of you and hurt your stories, and through you, i have seen this countrys promise. Thanks to so many who came before me, thanks to their toil and sweat and blood, i have been able to live that promise myself. That is the story of america. All those folks who sacrificed and overcame so much in their own times because they wanted something more, Something Better for their kids. There is a lot of beauty in that story. There is a lot of pain in it, too. A lot of struggle, injustice, and work left to do. And who we choose as our president in the selection will determine whether or not we honor that struggle and chip , and keepat injustice alive the very possibility of finishing network. I am one of a handful of People Living today who has seen andthand the immense weight awesome power of the presidency, and let me once again tell you this the job is hard. It requires clearheaded judgment, a mastery of complex and competing issues, a devotion to facts and history, a moral compass, and an ability to listen. Thatand abiding belief each of the 330 million lives in this country has meaning and worth. Words have the power to move markets. They can start wars or broker peace. They can summon our better angels or awaken our worst and stings. You simply cannot fake your way through this job. As i have said before, inc. President doesnt change being president doesnt change who you are, it reveals who you are. Electionresidential can reveal who we are, too. Four years ago, too many people chose to believe their votes did not matter. Maybe they were set up, maybe they thought the outcome would not be close, maybe the barriers felt too steep. Whatever the reason, in the end, those choices send someone to the oval office who lost the National Popular vote by nearly 3 million votes. In one of the states that determines the outcome, the winning margin averaged out to just two votes per precinct. Two votes. And weve all been living with the consequences. When my husband left office with joe biden at his side, we had a recordbreaking stretch of job creation, we secured the right to health care for 20 Million People. Ere respected w around the world, rallying allies to confront Climate Change. And our leaders worked handinhand with scientists to prevent the Ebola Outbreak from becoming a global pandemic. Four years later, the state of this nation is very different. More than 150,000 people have died and our economy is in shambles because of a virus that this president downplayed for too long. It has left millions of people jobless. Too many have lost their health care, too many are struggling to take care of a sick necessities like food and rent care of a sick necessities like food and rent. Too many communities left in the lurch and grappling with how to open schools safely. Internationally, we turned our back not only on agreements forged by my husband but alliances championed by president s like reagan and eisenhower. , as george home floyd, breonna taylor, and never ending list of innocent people of color continue to be murdered , stating the simple fact that a black life matters is still met with derision from the nations highest office. Because whenever we look to this white house for some leadership or consolation or any semblance of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy. Empathy. That is something ive been thinking a lot about lately. The ability to walk in someone elses shoes. The recognition that someone elses experience has value, too. Most of us practice this without a second thought. If we see someone suffering are struggling, we dont stand in judgment, we reach out, because they are but for the grace of god go i. It is not a hard concept to grasp. It is what we teach our children. Haveike so many of you, we tried our best to instill and our girls a strong moral foundation, to Carry Forward the values are parents and grandparents poured into us. But right now, kids in this country are seeing what happens when we stop requiring empathy of one another. They are looking around wondering if we have been lying to them this whole time about who we are and what we truly value. They see people shouting in grocery stores, unwilling to wear a mask to keep us all safe. They see people calling the police on folks minding their own business just because of the color of their skin. Entitlement that says only certain people belong and, that greed is good winning is everything, because as long as you come out on top, it doesnt matter what happens to everyone else. And they see what happens when that lack of empathy is ginned up into outright disdain. They see our leaders labeling fellow citizens in these enemies of the state while emboldening torch bearing white supremacists. They watch in horror as children are torn from their families and thrown in cages, and pepper spray and rebel bullets are used on Peaceful Protesters for a photo op. Sadly, this is the america that is on display for the next generation. A nation that is underperforming not simply on matters of policy, but on matters of character, and that is not just disappointing, it is downright infuriating. Because i know the goodness and in grace that is out there households and neighborhoods all across this nation, and i know that regardless of our race, age, religion or politics, when we close out the noise and fear and truly open our hearts, we know that what is going on in this country is just not right. This is not who we want to be paid what do we do now this is not who we want to be. What do we do now . What is our strategy . Over the last four years, a lot of people have asked me, when a lot of people are going so low, does going hi still work . Is theer, going high only thing that works. When we go low and use those same tactics of degrading and dehumanizing others, we become part of the ugly noise drowning out everything else. We degrade ourselves, degrade the very causes for which we fight. Highets be clear going does not mean putting on a smile and say nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty. Going high means taking the harder path. It means scraping and clawing our way to that mountaintop. It means standing fears against hatred while remembering that we are one nation under god, and if we want to survive, weve got to find a way to live together and Work Together across our differences. Unblockingigh means unlocking the shackles of lies and mistrust with the only thing that can truly set us free, the cold, hard truth. Clear me be as honest and as i possibly can donald trump is the wrong president for our country. He has had more than enough time to prove he can do the job but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is. Now, i understand my message will not be heard by some people. We live in a nation that is deeply divided and i am a black woman speaking at the democratic convention. But enough of you know me by now. You know i tell you exactly what i am feeling, you know i hate politics, but you also know i care about this nation. You know how much i care about all of our children. If you take one thing from my words tonight, it is this if you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can and they will if we dont make a thise in the selection election. If we have any hope of ending this chaos, weve got to vote for joe biden like our lives depend on. I know joe. He is a profoundly decent man guided by faith. He was a terrific Vice President. He knows what it takes to rescue an economy, be back a pandemic and lead our country. And he listens. He will tell the truth and trust science. Andill make smart plans manage a good team, and he will govern as a someone who has lived a life that the rest of us can recognize. When he was a kid, jos father lost his job. When he was a young senator, joe lost his wife and baby daughter. And when he was Vice President , he lost his beloved son. Joe knows the anguish of sitting at a table with an empty chair, which is why he gives his time so freely to grieving parents. Joe knows what it is like to struggle, which is why he gives his personal phone number to kids overcoming a stutter of their own. His life is a testament to getting back up, and he will channel that same grit and passion to pick us all up, to help us heal and guide us forward. Now, joe is not perfect, and he would be the first to tell you that. But there is no perfect candidate, no perfect president , and his ability to learn and that the kind of humility and maturity so many of yearn for right now. Joe biden has served this nation his entire life without losing sight of who he is. More than that, he has never lost sight of who we are, all of us. Joe biden wants all of our kids to go to a good school, see a doctor when they are sick, live on a healthy planet, and he has plans to make all of that happened. Happen. He wants all of our kids, no matter what they look like, walk out the door without worry about being harassed or arrested or killed. He wants all of our kids to be able to go to a movie or math class without being afraid of getting shot. He wants all of our kids to grow up with the leaders who will not just serve themselves and their wealthy peers but provide a safety net for people facing hard times. And if we want a chance to pursue any of these goals, any of these most basic requirements for a functioning society, we have to vote for joe biden in numbers that cannot be ignored, because right now, folks who know they cannot win fair and square at the ballot box are doing everything they can to stop us from voting. They are closing down polling places in minority neighborhoods, they are purging voter rolls, sending people out to intimidate voters, and they are lying about the security of our ballots. These tactics are not new. But this is not the time to withhold our votes in protest or play games with candidates who have no chance of win
