HARTVILLE – Police say a man used fake money from movie productions to buy candy, pizza and other items at businesses throughout town.
And investigators in other communities in Stark and surrounding counties have reported a rash of similar thefts made with counterfeit cash.
According to a Hartville police report, officers were called Wednesday to the Giant Eagle at 907 W. Maple Street for a man passing counterfeit $20 bills.
An employee told officers the suspect, later identified as Daniel Armstead II, entered the store twice within five minutes, purchasing a beverage and paying the cashier $20 each time.
The second time, the man asked the cashier to break a third $20, and the cashier noticed the money had the word "copy" blacked out with marker, according to the report.
