Of the different components, these are huge media and Communications Networks now, and in the United States and in most countries, these industries have been heavily regulated and very clear stipulations about what can and cant appear, how they can be used. You think about the idea of russia coming in and using nbc and comcast to influence our election what would happen . Thats exactly what happened here and the idea that they are going to somehow escape, hey, were just a platform, we have nothing to do with that. Good news, they are moving in that direction the other issue is antitrust, just the amount of power that these companies have and but i think its important to separate whether they think this is a business issue from a different kind of issue. Yes, this is an important political and cultural issue, but is it a threat to facebooks Business Model or reputation i dont think it is, because they dont rely on political advertising in an outsized way Mark Zuckerberg was way ahead of this with his middle american tour, you know, photos of him on farms milking cows, fixing tractors people thought was a ploy for his own political candidacy, some thought but youre saying its more about protecting the integrity of the model thats what i thought at the time hes running for facebook. He realizes these issues are coming up. Look, the business is going to be fine they are robustly healthy. Facebook, google, many others. Microsoft in the late 90s, antitrust trial, microsoft was still strong for a decade. Take a quick turn here quick, the president getting a briefing on Hurricane Irma in fort myers. So the Vice President , the first lady, mrs. Pence, has been getting a briefing, as you see here, about the impact of the hurricane and the recovery in the meantime, guys, hes been making comments about the dinner last night with schumer and pelosi, saying that before he agrees to any fix in daca, there has to be an understanding that the wall will be funded. He says if i dont get the wall, then we will become the obstructionists. So, trying to get more clarity on what they agreed to last night. Again, just how the tone was at that dinner got a headline pelosi said the atmosphere at dinner with trump were very friendly this is a whole new dynamic. It is, and i think it is great for america. And a lot of people hoped when trump was elected that he would be a pragmatic, bipartisan deal maker. We interviewed him a year and a half ago before the campaign started. He said, look, henry, ive been getting politicians to do what i want them to do my entire life when theres pragmatism, its great. This is good this is the way you get things done i think a lot of folks who were in the middle, independent, maybe even moderate democrats have to be encouraged by this. Contessa brewer is in miami watching all of this contessa has been following the recovery, but this is increasingly now a political story. Good morning, contessa good morning, carl, good to talk to you. The president today in fort myers and naples is going to see just a slice of that massive damage that irma did to the south. Overall were talking about an estimated 100 billion, that number coming from accu weather, but from key west, up through north florida and georgia, youre seeing so much real estate damage. All right, heres the president. Lets listen to him now. To think of the incredible power of that storm and while people, unfortunately, passed, it was such a small number that people thought thousands and thousands of people may have their lives ended, and the number is a very small number, which is a great tribute to you. Also the fact that i know in the case of fema and the case of coast guard, the job youve done in saving people, saving lives, as an example harvey in texas we talked over 16,000 lives nobody would even understand that its hard to even imagine. And down here the same thing i want to thank everybody. I dont want to see you next week in another place, okay . Weve seen you enough. But i just want to thank everybody, the First Responders, on behalf of myself, our Vice President , melania, really wanted to be with us shes really its really touched her heart whats gone on and weve seen the devastation were going to see some more of it now, unfortunately, and i have to say that your governor, where is our governor here rick scott [ applause ] the job hes done is incredible. And i guess ive been very lucky, because, you know, you have a great governor in texas, you have a great governor in florida. The job that rick has done is being talked about all over. And to think that and i must say, Florida Power and light, wheres eric eric, wheres eric come here, eric. Great job. I will say, they are way ahead of schedule. There are more electrical people in this state, i think, than ever accumulated anywhere in the world is what i read before. Its from all over the country they came. And, i mean, ive never seen youve never seen anything like it, mobilized all over i see pam, whos done such an incredible job stopping certain little problems before they start and actually getting some of the companies to put up a lot of money so the attorney general, i want to thank you, pam. Fantastic job. Elaine, wheres elaine duke . Dont lose him, okay i have to say that brock, working with your governor, working with pam, working with elaine working, by the way, with marco rubio, whos around here some place [ applause ] its a team like very few people have seen, and i want to thank everybody. Marco, i want to thank you a lot. You were really helpful. And i just again have to say, what do i know, but i hope this man right here, rick scott, runs for the senate i dont know what hes going to do, but i know that at a certain point it ends for you, and we cant let it end so i hope he runs for senate who knows what hes going to do . Again, i came down to say hello to you folks and say hello to you folks and the first lady and myself, this is an honor for us to be here were now going to tour some of the areas, and as rick said, we have been very, very fast, and we had to be we were signing papers as the storm was coming in, and thats never happened before. Rick, thank you very much for the great job and brock and everybody. Thank you very much. We have the great rick perry here we have energy, linda, linda mcmahon, so many people, so many cabinet members. I want to thank mike pence he is id be happy to thank you, mr. President , first lady its an honor to be with you today, just to pay a debt of gratitude for the great leadership here at the state and local level. I know the president directed the full resources of the federal government to support floridas effort to prepare for and confront and now recover and rebuild from Hurricane Irma. The president s directive over this weekend was very clear, wherever Hurricane Irma goes, were going to be there first. And thanks to the great leadership of your governor and your Emergency Management team, and all of the great First Responders on the ground, thats exactly what florida did and as the president has said, were with you today that is the president and the Vice President with marco rubio there behind them, governor rick scott, of course, the first lady, and the ceo of Florida Power and light as the president gives them a shoutout for the recovery postirma, which has been better than some expected, depending on where you are in the state. Obviously, bit of a political pitch for rick scott to run for senate governor. That was interesting. But gives you a sense as to where the president sees some of these fine lines in the senate that are going to be key for future legislation contessa brewer, watching this in miami, and it does remind us, contessa, to keep track of the degree of which electricity and utilities are back in that state. You know, when he mentions the army of utility workers that have come here, i met some of them from wisconsin and illinois yesterday, down in the florida keys, where many of those islands still do not have power. They say its issue number one for them, because cleanup just cant continue until they get power, so its an almighty job its really interesting to see how theyve deployed lets not forget, too, florida is one of those states that was responsible for putting trump in the white house and so it bodes well for him to be here, to be addressing the concerns of floridians, to be talking about what the top of mind for them as he moves forward to recovery in fort myers take, for instance, its a unique housing situation there, where a lot of people are still in a negative equity position. It hasnt fully recovered from the housing boom of 2006 in fact, in fort myers, 29 before market, diana olick told me so this means if they cant get Insurance Coverage for their house, they could walk away. That could be an incredibly critical issue for fort myers, and you know, carl, you were there in Bonita Springs between fort myers and naples, every town you go to is a little slice of irma damage, yet when you go from town to town to town and get a sense of the scope here, you can see how important it is that the federal government is throwing all the resources at this they have 38,000 workers over all different agencies attending to the needs of irma victims in miami you have the brickell avenue neighborhood, the wall street south, as they call it, thats back in business, but you look around there and theres still infrastructure issues they have to deal with. Carl specifically, contessa, do we have new numbers on returning power to the millions of floridians that have lost it and how fast these authorities are making progress on that front . Florida power and light has been doing a great job of keeping us updated i havent seen the newest numbers today, but let me give you a sliver of what i saw on the florida keys we get past this checkpoint where all of the haeresidents a turned away. They cant get to marathon, key west, or any place in between. They are allowing infrastructure crews in only and the media. So i drive all the way to key west and theres these Little Pockets with the power on. Duval street, boarded up, theres a bar open and running serving cold beer. So, there are Little Pockets where the power is coming back on and if youre a business, business is booming because youve got power and ice and fuel sara . Contessa, thanks. Lets just listen one more time to the president s remarks trying to keep them as happy as we can under the circumstances. In many cases they lost their homes and its a tough situation. Were going to see a lot of the folks. I will tell you, again, i want to thank you i want to thank the military so, thank everybody and well see you later. Media, we appreciate your being so understanding this has been a very tough period of time, even for you folks, and we really do appreciate your understanding. This has been a difficult situation, as rick knows, almost all of the roads are now open, and the ports are just about open what we had to do to get some of those ports open people wouldnt even believe that we did it so quickly, so were very proud of the job that everybody around has done thank you all, thank you very much, well see you later. Thank you. President thanking the military, of course, and even the ports. Difficult to get those channels clear. And the media. That was a good one. Unusual these are always tests this was the first test for this commander in chief comes two weeks after harvey devastation. He visited there twice, spent the weekend at camp david this past weekend talking to his key officials about how they were going to deal with the irma and harvey storm, and he continues to make these visits and be on top of the situation this has been a great looks like hes done a great job. Yes turning to equifax this morning, the ftc says it is investigating that massive data breach as the ceo says he will testify before a house panel october 3rd. Just this morning Chuck Schumer weighed in on this take a listen to this. If equifax does not agree to these five things in one weeks time, the ceo of the company and the entire board should step down these five steps are common sense. They are the baseline of decency. If equifax cant commit to them, their leaderships not up to the job, and the entire leadership must be replaced sort of what jim cramer said this morning, said its time for the ceo to spend more time with his family or at least come explain to everyone in the country how it is that this situation happened. Because these companies are in a situation just as a consumer, they are gathering your information and selling your information, giving permission to do it, anything like that is a huge, wildly profitable business and for this to happen, they have to come testify. Old technology, and i think what strikes a lot of people is the inherent hip ypocrisy here. Here they have this massive breach and the response is kind of, oh, sorry, you dont get to look at your credit score and go, oh, sorry, give me what i want anyway. But really i think what it comes down to for consumers is that the rules have changed just like they have for companies. It used to be keep the information safe, assume the bad guys cant get in if you take the steps. Now you have to assume your Social Security number is out there, your date of birth is out there, all that information is out there and we have to keep track of it. Well see if congress and if the regulators actually adjust their approach for that new reality. And the companies have to adjust and spend a lot more money building protections around this. Cybersecurity firms, they are getting their data off, i guess, open door internet, which is what it appeared to have happened here. Absolutely. Just more investment around this this is a tough problem, its only going to get tougher as technologies get better and better and people get smarter and smarter. This is something the country faces, as well, but each company does we probably need security audits for these firm that is have americans crucial information. They shouldnt be running on servers from 2005. Yeah, it will be interesting to see in the months ahead whether or not this impacts the purchase of large things for which you need financing thats going to be a story over the next few months. Henry, thanks. When we come back this morning, more from fabers interview, and Leslie Moonves of cbs. The president blocking the sale of the chip leader to chinese investors. Plus, martin srehkli behind bars but not for reasons you might think. Squawk alley returns in a moment always interesting to sit down with both those gentlemen theyve been connected with the endless rumors that go on, but as you know, were in an interesting time in terms of the media and telecom industry, incredible competition, changing tastes in media, of course did speak to mcadam about the questions involving verizons future when it comes to large merger and acquisition activity. I can tell you, as others have reported, as well. There was a serious dally between them in which verizon was examining and exploring the possibility of trying to buy charter. They didnt get there and it was clear from mcadams comments to me that thats not going to happen any time soon take a listen. I think a week didnt go by that we werent mentioned as youre going to buy disney, cbs, charter, comcast, or whoever look, cooler heads are, you know, running these businesses so, you know, i think charters got a great company, great Business Model we are very focused on deploying fiber and 5g thats where we need to put our capital dollars and buying a Cable Company and having to reconfigure their network didnt make any sense for us. So, carl, they are very much focused on 5g. Youve heard it before, the last time i sat down with mcadam a number of months ago they were focused on it, as well it would appear to be the pillar they are going to build on to try and reinvigorate growth at verizon, a Company Whose wireless business, of course, had incredible growth, given the success of their network for a long time. Mcadam, one of the keys and architect of that network, but now facing, as we know, a landscape that is just really, really tough 5g is where they are focused, not, it would appear, buying a Cable Company the likes of charter or, frankly, going into content and in a much bigger way beyond aol and yahoo with the purchase of the likes of a disney by the way, nobody is buying cbs, we know that. Not like the Redstone Family has any interests in selling either. Back to you, sara. All right, david faber on the latest there verizon, by the way, down today about 11 for the year also take a listen to this from cbs Ceo Les Moonves talking to david this morning they are starting to get it when other companies talk about the loss of cable subs and the people are cord cutting, when people are cord cutting or they are leaving cable, they are going somewhere. They are not going to the thin air. So they are buying other services if you leave one service for another, we are still there and were getting paid more for it joining us now to discuss cord cutting and the stocks affected Senior Analyst with oppenheimer. Gentlemen, good morning to both of you tom, ill start with you you cover cbs. Cbs has a way for investors to play the cord cutting theme on the idea moonves said well be there for them, we have options. Well, and they do and, you know, cbs all access, i think, has grown a lot faster than most had expected, including me there are a lot of people out there who want to get it outside of cable whats interesting is that for every one cable subscriber they lose as a viewer, if they get half an all access viewer, they break even it does work also said hes bullish on it with the star trek release, hes seen the first ten, that should help fuel that i guess my question, jason, and especially in light of the emarketer data that came out this week suggesting cord cutting is happening faster, 30 more than last year is just how many options are going to be too much for consumers when it comes to disney and youtube and Everything Else . When it comes to over the top, and doesnt that get expensive thats the question, right . So the idea was originally that it will be more expensive if you break the bundle so far consumers seem to be okay with, you know, having fewer choices, so netflix in the quarter, their subs in the u. S. Were up 10 . Still a big number, so theres still not a slowdown in that business and thats not an ad supported business, specifically to the emarketers numbers you cited, i think the issue is, if youre recapturing that sub, like cbs all access, and you can get the subscription fee, great. I think the deficit right now is on the advertising side, because they are not figuring out how to effectively monetize those odd balls once it becomes app based viewing, even on an adsupported service. Tom, that leads to my question with music, when it was first Going Digital people left the old model for piracy too many people did now and in tv, appears, at least moonves is arguing they are leaving and paying for something else. So is the Market Opportunity going to end up being the same size, bigger, smaller . Well, you know, to the point on cbs, they actually are being paid on advertising. So the reason why advertisers like the cbs all access viewer is because they have more data on them. So they can target their advertising to that viewer so the cbs all access viewer actually monetizes higher for advertising. But in terms of the overall space, you know, the paid tv space, obviously, is declining and so right now the offset of that in terms of streaming subscribers hasnt quite offset the decline. And i think it was because youre also getting viewers that are over the air broadcasters are getting more and more viewers over the air. Remember a couple years ago things went digital in terms of the transmission of broadcast signals, so now the antenna is more powerful. So again, subscribers are getting their channels over the air. Jason, moonves was asked whether or not disney would work on their ott product he said, yes, because there are disney franchises Consumers Want and are willing to pay for, he says the same about cbs, star trek, for example. Isnt that universe limited . How many franchises out there will get a consumer to pony up money in advance i think you have to start with a top of the funnel, right . Netflix had a first mover advantage, theyve gotten to 52 million subscribers, we call it households then you have someone like an amazon, who leveraged prime to build up basically prime video, so for the most part theres at least 50 million prime video households in the u. S. , right, probably more. So, arguably, its bigger than netflix, but people didnt realize they were getting it they effectively ended up with it for free and now its how can amazon monetize it then you start to get into the skinny bundles, so dish had one, that was one of the value options. But now you have google with youtube tv at 30 a month. You get the local affiliates, most of the cable channels i think individual options are going to be tough, and ultimately its going to be bundles, but skinnier bundles. To talk about in terms of the overall price, you know, the average household in the u. S. Watches 149 hours of tv a month. Thats a lot of tv, right, so the average household is not going to be satisfied with just two streaming options. If you add two or three together and add in broadband at 50 a month, youre getting close to 9,800, thats more than a cable package. Question is are they cutting the cord because of the cost or because they want different options . Were going to continue this conversation another day, because it is far from over. For now, gentlemen, thank you so much jason and tom. And still to come, Pharma Bro Martin shkreli behind bars this morning, and unless youve seen the headlines, i guarantee you cannot guess the reason. Well fill you in when squawk alley comes back in a moment. Good morning, everyone, im sue herrera. Whats this mean expedia basically becomes thomas cooks preferred Hotel Provider for certain holiday sales. Both stocks lower at this moment back to you, john. Thank you, seema. And meanwhile, Pharma Bro Martin shkreli behind bars this morning. Me meg is back at headquarters with the details. Martin shkrelis bail was revoked last night and he was remanded into custody and sent to federal prison, this after what prosecutors called evidence of an escalating pattern of threats and harassment taking place on social media. Last week shkreli posted on facebook telling followers hed paid 5,000 to anyone who could bring him some of Hillary Clintons hair he later updated that to say it was satire, but prosecutors noted the secret service got involved shkreli apologized in a letter to a judge this week, but she agreed with the prosecutors and in shkrelis bail hearing she pointed out threatening language not only around hillary clinton, but a journalist, ultimately led to shkreli being banned from that social media platform this year shkreli became famous for raising the price of a drug by 5,000 overnight, but it was social media that brought him attention since then, to the hours of his life he streamed online and, of course, he gained attention through the purchase of a single copy of an album he reportedly put it on bid on ebay, shkrelis sentencing is set for january 16th no word on what happens to that album auction in the meantime. Back over to you so odd. Odd behavior meg terrell, thank you very much meantime, p g responding to a shareholders public support letter for a board seat. Remember this morning yaktman supported peltzs nomination, saying voting for him earns 1. 3 billion in stock, just responding to us, our full year 2017 results demonstrate the plan we have in place is working and we appreciate the support, they say, we have received from many of our shareholders for our strategy that is delivering value. While we did not ask for this proxy contest, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that our shareholders understand the facts. So, their way of fighting back, Nothing Specific on yaktman, but they are saying they have support of shareholders for their plan, which they continue to say is working and theyll continue to fight peltzs board determination. Well see where that vote goes october 10th when we come back, new tensions between the u. S. And china after President Trump blocked a lucrative ipch detail. Details on that and what it could mean for others when squawk alley returns President Trump blocking a chinesebacked private equity firm last night. He followed the recommendation of siphious, which had National Security concerns about that deal our Michelle Carusocabrera is here with more the Treasury Department cited four reasons from rejecting the 1. 3 billion purchase. First, the potential transfer of intellectual property. The Chinese Governments role in the deal, and the importance of the integrity of the Semiconductor Supply Chain to the u. S. Government. Also the use of lattice products by the u. S. Government on paper, the wouldbe purchaser of Lattice Semiconductor looks like an American Investment fund however, according to treasury its backed by chinese money, including from china Venture Capital fund, which is controlled by the Chinese Government we asked how much of the financing comes from china, a Company Spokesperson declined to respond. Knowing the deal was in trouble, the ceo of lattice tried to salvage it by saying it would save american jobs and lattice would hand control of its intellectual property to the u. S. Government. That, obviously, didnt work key question now, is this a sign that the Trump Administration is going to get tough on all chinese purchases, either as a stealth trade war, perhaps out of anger for a perceived lack of help when dealing with north korea . So keep an eye on two other high profile deals, first alibabas financial trying to buy moneygram. Also h a awaiting approval to buy Skybridge Capital from anthony scaramucci, who was briefly the White House Communications director. Semiconductors, always sensitive. Back to you. Michelle, what do you think, canary in the coal mine, or not . Semiconductors are always, always tough i think whats happened when you speak to many people involved in the process over the last several decades, theres a greater acknowledgment even when theres private money in china, so much of it is also connected to a State Government entity, so all of these are going to be, any kind of chinese purchase is going to be seen with much more scrutiny i have one lawyer familiar with the process say maybe ten years ago 25 of these transactions would get approved he thinks now only 10 will get approved at this point remember, we dont hear about the vast majority of them. Were only hearing about this one because its publicly traded wouldnt that be odd if the Administration Blocks Anthony Scaramuccis deal to sell his firm he put on the block to a chinese country to enter the administration to begin with there would be a lot of irony there. Theres some kind of book or novel there for sure sara yeah, thats a to be continued one. Michelle, thanks. When we come back this morning, were going to talk about the Amazon Effect and death of a mall with ceo of brookstone dow has set record highs today, but up about 15 points rick, what are you watching . Well talk to adam jonas, as well hes also talking bitcoin, facebook, amazon, apple, the nasdaq, his take on the massive equifax hack and what must be done to protect us online. Halftime report, top of the hour, with the man of the hour see you there in a bit good to have you on the floor. See you then now out to the cme group, Rick Santelli with the Santelli Exchange in chicago. Rick thank you, sara id like to welcome bob, my Health Care Expert bob, its always great to have you as i talked about in the tease, we have senators graham, cassidy, heller, johnson, and santorum now you can add to that list Bernie Sanders and why bernie . Because none of the above, obviously, have any faith in the current direction in obamacare, all have plans, the first five have a plan presented yesterday, Bernie Sanders a little different plan why dont you tell us your thoughts on both plans and can we actually see walking dead with respect to legislation to repeal and or replace . Maybe not necessarily in the same calendar month, obamacare well, the chances of any action on health care, any big action on health care, are about zero, rick, either on the side of the republicans, the senators youve just mentioned, or Bernie Sanders and a number of other democratic senators, who yesterday said they are supporting a single payer canadian style plan. Whats ironic about all of this, i think, is you have the most conservative republicans saying weve got to repeal, replace obamacare because its not working. And now youve got a number of democratic senators, led by Bernie Sanders, saying weve got to go to single payer. Apparently they dont have confidence that obamacare can work either, so we are sort of stuck with the Affordable Care act, which has worked well for people on medicaid, its worked well for the lowest income people, its worked very badly for the middle class or people with low subsidies or no subsidies. Looks like were stuck with it for the foreseeable future, even though both ends of the party spectrum know its not workable. You know, bob, many of us realized early on that this current president is not an ideal, hes a tractional being i was not shocked to see him work on debt ceiling harvey issues you sound like the chances are zero do you think this president can maneuver between the left and right side of the aisle and come up with some type of compromise . Well, i suppose thats always possible, but where is the compromise the problem is that republicans have really rejected all the basic tenants of obamacare, and if youre going to fix obamacare, youre going to have to make some pretty significant changes. One of the things youd have to do to at least stabilize it, shore it up, make it work for the future is give Insurance Companies more flexibility to offer alternative plans for people to get more people into the risk pool. The problem is we dont have enough people in the risk pool so far democrats said we dont want to see that kind of flexibility, so the problem right now is even though there are efforts going on in the Senate Health committee to try to find a compromise, as republicans say, well allow some of these subsidies to continue, but you have to give us more flexibility, democrats keep saying, no, were not going to give you that kind of flexibility. Its possible. Bob, were going to have to leave it there, were just about out of time, but i see where youre going i tell you, my own thought is, it can be transactional, not necessarily within a sector like health care, but when you start pairing things like tax reform, immigration, health care, maybe the outcome can be surprising. Bob, thank you sara, back to you. Rick, thanks. Still to come, amazon hyping up its first live streamed nfl Football Game with an ad you have to see.
