Well talk to one about what shes doing to protect her homes. A little good news and positive trends being seen at airports around the world. Friday may 8 you are watching Worldwide Exchange here on cnbc good morning, good afternoon, good evening welcome from wherever you are watching im Brian Sullivan i think i speak for all of us as a say tgif stock futures are up 270 points right now. Perhaps the Market Knowledge of the day, for some reason, if you tuned out yesterday. We have some gains the nasdaq is now higher on the year hard to believe given all that is going on across the country it is true with yesterdays gains that the nasdaq is now positive the more condensed version is up 4 this year it is really the big five Technology Names you know. Apple, google, microsoft, facebook are up on average 10 despite concerns about Consumer Spending on advertisement. Google and microsoft are up. Improving is the work from home and stayathome stocks. Zoom, netflix, paypal have all soared since january not just a bullish story this morning. Worldwide we are seeing optimism there. Trade talks lifting those markets. All the major indices lifting higher japan jumping 2. 5 the markets in the uk are trading largely in the green a positive day futures majors as well perhaps another reason why there is so much green on the screen is that the Trump Administration is reportedly weighing more steps to try to blunt the economic pain being felt by so Many AmericansFrank Holland is here with other top headlines. Good morning, brian the Trump Administration is mulling steps including another delay to the federal tax filing deadline sources say tax day has already been pushed to july 16 it could be extended to midseptember or possibly even december many of the other proposals depend on americans reopening businesses and returning to work on that matter, the white house rejected guidelines from the centers for Disease Control on how businesses, schools and other organizations should reopen saying the Coronavirus Task force viewed that as overly restrictive and in some cases undercut u. S. Guidelines to reopen today, california will restart some operations. Businesses selling clothing, sports and goods to sell curb side revealing the states surplus has turned into a 54 billion deficit. Minnesota making a similar announcement other states in a similar position back over to you thank you, frank. Let us turn now back to the market and your money. Stocks continue to do nothing but bounce back from their march lows futures are up 250 points right now. We are joined on the news line chris, first off, we highlighted it there at the top. The nasdaq, positive for the year with 30 plus million unemployed. What exactly is going on that is powering the stock higher right now. Reconciling the Economic Data you report with how the market responded. That statement that leaders were very much the leaders they were very much in vogue and remain in vogue right now. The really big difference where we try to see the leadership changes that supports the idea the market is stronger than people expect i know the difficulty in reconciling that you go back and look historically where the record bottoms before the cure of the crisis is known. It is probably no different than the prior crisis events weve all seen the idea that market isetter time as head when we look inside lets open up and put our head in the engine, are you worried about this continued seminarrow focus on the relative outperformance of technology i think the story that this has been narrow is a little misleading look at the performance of small caps and of the energy sector. Theyve outperformed small caps over the last two and a half weeks, the small cap, large cap performance is strong estimate weve seen in history weve had 70 make an alltime high the trouble is youve had 35 s p rally over the better part of five or six weeks absolutely the trick is here not getting too negative even when that data comes out. We are not negative on oil oil has firmed up just a bit with that, i look at not just the stock but the debt of these companies. That is ultimately the oil story. Energy credit. Not perfect but has gotten better how much does that play into it if at all . Better is a relative term when it comes to that. What is important to me. One of the reasons it is remarkable when front line crude went negative. No Energy Stocks made a 52week low. Energy actually contracted whatever the crude market was telling you two or three weeks ago, the stocks already priced in i think the response over the last three or four weeks particularly with the low. I dont think many people realize that, suggest maybe the worst in that group has passed on a macro level, lets wrap it up with this may 8, you had the markets doing well and then they crashed for the consumers that held on they held their nose do they take profit now or ride it out higher days ahead i think you stay the course all the conditions you look for have presented themselves over the last five or six weeks the viewer has to fight the temptation to fight the hook the one thing every crisis tries to convince investors is different this time. I want to keep that in mind as we navigate this market. Chris, always a pleasure to have you on cnbc well see you. Have a safe, happy and healthy weekend. Wow so again, here we go im going to ask you for your real world, the yoonindicator with 10 being back to normal, one being the height of the pandemic where would you say your daytoday work life stands right now . Where are you . Id say five. Five yeah there are days when you think, okay, we can go out, traffic is out there, we are going to restaurants more, daring to shop as well. At the same time, i was thinking about traveling this weekend got a little nervous about the idea of getting on to a train or plane. There is still a lot unknown about the virus and how it spreads. Travel bookings are down. Eunice, always appreciate it have a great weekend take care. You too still on deck, airbnb speaking of travel in the dog house as many hosts are angry as cancellations grow and the pay back policies. One host is taking matters into her own hands trying to solve the problem herself. Stick around announcer todays big number 52. 8 . Thats how much shares of paypal have jumped since march. Urayftmpany hit an alltime high thsd aer reporting a record day of transactions on may 1. Its a challenging market. Edward jones is well aware of that. Which is why were ready to listen. First up is uber undoubtedly posting one of the worst quarters in history. Cutting a number of corporate jobs rides in april down 80 . There was a bright spot. Uber eats saw bookings jump more than 50 that profitability still a top priority stock is up about 8 the uber ceo will be on around 8 00 a. M. This morning stock two is roku reporting a wider firstquarter loss as we are streaming stuck at home shares of roku down about 8 the Company Expects ad sales to grow at a slower pace this year. Advertisers save cash amid the pandemic rounding it out this morning, trip advisor trip expects, get this, little to know revenue at all this quarter. But trip advisor does believe conditions may improve a bit in the third quarter. The company has furloughed about a quarter of its work force. Staying on the travel story. We will get on the road ahead at some point, we promise we just need to know when. We need more good will more than ever airbnb is facing backlash particularly over policy of reimbursement over cancellations. Some hosts taking things into their own control. Going to our guest, a host who started her own travel site. What particularly is your beef with airbnb . Thank you for having me everybody is struggling right now. It is a difficult time for travel there is absolutely no easy solutions for anything ultimately, the challenge i have with the policy that airbnb had is how little they communicated with the hosts in advance. Hosts should know what to do in these situations and have been hospitable ive refunded any guest across any platforms that have been impacted by this to make that policy without any conversation with hosts in advance and getting feedback is in my opinion is not the right way to go about it in general, i think as these sites become bigger and bigger, it becomes more challenging to have control over their own policies and what to do when things like this would happen. Nobody foresaw things like this happening. It could put a lot of businesses, Small Businesses like hosts completely out. In particular, pawhat would u like to see airbnb change or do right now . I think just embracing hosts. Their platform is built off hosts. Going out and surveying and getting feedback we are all in this together. Without the host, airbnb wouldnt exist from a host standpoint, regardless of this, i have multiple Vacation Properties i had a website for one of them a year before this over a third of my bookings come directly through my web site it does require a good amount of marketing. Hosts in general need to realize there are other options to go and build their own websites and market and create a brand for themselves it doesnt mean they shouldnt be on airbnb or vrbo but that they can have control and should be able to do both we are trying to find some green chutes, optimism right now. When you look out, are you seeing people keep reservations in summer or fall or any new bookings occurring in some, i am seeing new bookings right now, there are restrictions in place, right now in all of the places i have rentals, there are restricts people are very antsy to get out and travel there is definitely optimism the challenges are really around the restrictions from a statetostate basis whether people can stay there or not i think as soon as people can stay, people will get out there and travel and use this as an opportunity to Start Building their brand now. Im trying to figure outweighs to help other hosts to build and launch their own sites so that they can have that same ability to diversify when needed welcoming on cnbc is a good start to get your message out. Good luck to you, paulina. Thank you. Take cakre ahead, we are going to break down the names that may be putting their payouts on the chopping block and bitcoin briefly back up above 10,000 mark this morning surging from the large low of 3,800 to more than 10,000. More on that football story ahead. We can always probably use a little sports optimism now in the game of investing, the bulls are ahead now. Futures are up big optimism around trade talks. Lights at the end of the economic tunnel helping us move higher today and recently. Here is some Market Knowledge well drop on this friday. The nasdaq is now higher on the year it is hard to believe all that is going on. With yesterdays move higher the nasdaq has turned up up 4 this year. It is the big five Technology Names you know apple, amazon, google, microsoft and facebook that continue to power the market they are up 10 this year. All that despite concerns about ad spending. Google and microsoft are up double digits. Also up this year, the work from home and stayathome stocks names netflix, zoom, maybe paypal all those stocks have soared since january. It is friday, which means we are going to bring you an exclusive look at what Company Insiders are getting bullish on Company Insights right now the Top Five Companies with the most insider buying this week. Keep in mind, these are not corporate buy backs. These are individuals using their own money to buy stock number five. A new name, virginia based insurer markel number four, Boston Properties third, chubb number two most insider buying last week is ford. Check this out the chief operating officer at ford buying 195,000 shares after selling this stock last fall so the coo sold last fall and made some money and is reinvesting back in to ford. The company with the ceo buying the most is boyd gaming. Bill boyd buying 1. 6 million worth of his own stock last week obviously bill sees perhaps better times or some times ahead as casinos look to reopen. Markel, Boston Properties, ford, chubb and boyd gaming. Well do this for you every friday one troubling trend facing income seeking investors is that dividends are being cut. Companies that are suspending or canceling their payout the highest since 2001 companies such as boeing, disney, ford, delta and more making that list payouts expected to fall by as much as 10 . How can you predict what quarterly payouts may be headed for the chopping block and get ahead of that, joining us now, managing director who has crunched the numbers and has nine names that could be at risk not sure we can say all the names. Weve been rolling the names but quickly, what metrics are you using to tree to predict sure. Great question thanks for having me on. A couple of Different Things to look at. We start with our uniform accounting numbers we restate the Financial Statements to get rid of all the problems we have and understand what real corporate profitability and earnings are the next thing we focus on when trying to identify what companies are at risk is honing in on Debt Maturity and obligations. When you have a better understanding and when they fall that companies will have to make tough decisions. These nine will debt maturities in the next hundred years or so that may if they close off the markets will make them have to make tough decisions and dividends may be what is on the chopping block okay. One thing that surprised me is that we are looking at two generals General Mills and General Dynamics that includes a couple of other Food Companies. Campbells and kellogg. What we are hearing is that Food Companies are booming because everybody is stocking up why did these make your list great question. These are companies at eminent risk making cuts right now these are blue chip names. You are being undercompensated for the risk for these companies if you are owning them if you look at a name like General Mills, you are looking at a name where the market is facing a risk of cut it has 3 billion worth of debt due in the next year and a half. If they have any moment, are actually cut off from the markets. They cant refinance that debt if we have another leg down per se you are going to be in a situation wherewith you have to make some tough decisions. What obligation between debt security and dividends are they going to spend money on. Dividends might be something on a chopping block and might be pressing out with so many different trends locked down on supply issues food hording and not enough food here or there. John deere, what is likely to happen to their dividend sure. First thing that jumps out they have 7 billion coming due in the next two years. The other issue, when we think of john deere, we think of tractors farmers must be doing well because we are still eating. A third of their business comes from construction. Right. Nobody is spending money in terms of buying new construction right now. If you think of that environment and a company that has plenty of debt coming through, again, a company we are pointing out saying, look, we are being undercompensated for the risk here and if you are under cash flow, that is one of the first things on the chopping block. Companies that may be slicing their payouts ahead. Greatyou for that list. Weekend. Coming up, im going to ask you a simple question, would you take a cruise right now . How about next fall . Another cruise line is hoping you would. It plans to set sail again soon. Markets continue to bounce back off their lows the dow is up 250 points we are back after this sometimes the challenges of todays world make it tough to take care of yourself, thats why you can rely on natures bounty. You cannot ignore it when we can, we are going to try to find you some green chutes to feel good about. Dare we call it hopium here is one. On wednesday, tracking more than 90,000 flights that is the First Time Since midmarch, we had more than 90,000 flights since midmay small but interesting sign of global activity. Air travel while crushed may be getting slightly better. Hit us up on twitter nations may be even in more trouble. In india, many workers simply dont have the ability to work from home. Some are struggling to fix what was a fastgrowing problem here, outsourced it jobs that have suddenly now gone off line some companies trying to bring those back to the United States. One of them is galxe solution. We spoke to you about this outsourced to detroit idea tell us about Many Companies with operations whether in india or the philippines how off line are some of those companies . Brian, it is great to be here i think the situation is first of all, the human toll that world has faced and the United States has faced is beyond anything weve experienced before as americans, its incumbent on us now to understand the situation and make the best of it as youve been reporting, our unemployment figures in excess of 30 Million People have to be addressed and the private sector has to do its piece. Offshore in its model has the play of a lot of people at relatively low price points. But now, work force resilience is a factor. That is to say, having a work force that could be interrupted most obviously with a pandemic we are looking at work from home in third world countries looks nothing like what it does in the United States. There are challenges around infrastructure, connectivity, lack of privacy, security concerns people that dont have electricity. In all of those circumstances, that disruption means that model seems to be perceived as very, very challenged. You lay on top of that we talk so much on this network about supply chains related to stuff, industrial equipment, even food we rarely talk about intellectual supply chain. Do you see this type of an event really convincing americans that despite the higher cost of labor in many situations that youve got to bring jobs back here because we cant afford to be off line 100 . The good news is outsource to america, our program will bring those jobs back at the same price point as offshore. The reason we are able to do that is because work from home is here to stay in some form or other. The people in the United States can be brought together. Meaning, you dont have to be in the maethjor i. T. Hubs. You can be in an emerging city we are partnering with Northwestern Mutual to outsource to milwaukee you are looking at almost 300 new jobs being created thats in milwaukee. That means people that live in milwaukee or cities like milwaukee are included in the pool of individuals where Public Private partnership are retraining work force mobilization and being part of how weve had the ability to take work that was going to be offshore and do it in the United States one other factor the offshore firms, brian, are focused on manual effort by 10s of thousands of people galaxe has automation when you combine that, you are able to accomplish your task at a price point comparable to offshore that is a big differentiator in this respect, you are really able to compete and you have the security of being inside the United States. One other major factor here tim, buddy. Im sorry, we have a hard break coming in. Great job. One we havent addressed enough. Thank you for coming on. Perfect esh that sorry to cut you off we have to talk about that monthly jobs number. We will right after this the United StatesPostal Service is here to deliver your mail and packages and the peace of mind of knowing that essentials like prescriptions are on their way. You remember that first summer job maybe working at a pizza joint at the shore it is a right for many teens and summer workers but with so many travel plans on hold, everybody is starting to get nervous as summer creeps closer looking at what a would be summer worker might do good morning good morning. The Restaurant Industry typically adds about half a million seasonal summer jobs many of them wind up going to teens. This summer, there is a big question mark around the coronavirus pandemic the challenge for the restaurants right now, over 40 of the industry is shut down many are concerned if theyll reopen if we can find a way, thats when youll see teenagers hired this summer. One in six restaurants do operate seasonally and do rely on summer months to make up for the revenue theyve missed many getting creative with Curbside Pickup recent data has picked up. Overall down 32 from a prior 36 earlier. This is due to government relief payments and some reopenings with 300,000 restaurants potentially set to reopen in the next two weeks for onsite dining we talked to a Franchise Owner with many restaurants who said the biggest competitor isnt the restaurant across the street, it is the Unemployment Office back to you. Very tough times there. Big and scarey numbers kate rogers. We are all wondering what it will look like in the next month. Talking about the jobs picture bringing in tom from rbc markets. We are talking about summer jobs but lets talk about jobs jobs dare i even ask what kind of an estimate you may have on that number does the estimate even matter because we know it will be terrible nonetheless i think it might be the least anticipated worst jobs number in history. That number has been flagged so long at this point adp gave a flag on that earlier in the week. We are looking at the 20 million decline in the number of unemployed drifting to 17 look, again, as you said, everyone is anticipating this. If people wanted to latch on to one thing to watch one of the interesting things would be the number of people that have been unemployed and put on temporarily layoff. If you continue to see another increase there, it gives you some hope that some of these people will come back pretty quickly. What we are looking for, i would imagine tom, is the turn in the morning with the weekly jobless numbers that things are turned for the better. Do you see that in the future . You sort of do. People want things to go back to where they were quickly. There is a process things are going to peak and start the slow process of improving. You can lay claim to jobless claims joble jobless claims are at three and maybe closer to two. This data for home base weve been touting they are like a Small BusinessPayroll Management company one interesting there, they had state by state data. The process of improving is under way. I want to be very clear, the process is going to be elongated and slow but you have to start somewhere. Thats what im looking at now. Yes, that chart you had some of this montana stuff, we are looking at montana about when are people going to start to come back to work job losses are massive most of those people are in the leisure and Hospitality IndustryUnited Airlines announcing management job cuts. Is it hitting all sectors or is it really confined because those jobs have the ability to come back more quickly . It is not even close to being broadened out. It is a slow prosis. I feel like a microeconomist we were looking at montana because montana is one of these states you are starting to see a turn, right. What we have to critically keep in mind is, some states are going to be reopening but what percent of the labor backdrop do they account for they account for a really small percent of the labor force but nonetheless, thats how you start the process of understanding. It will start with the err will i reopenings again, jobs numbers is a big deal we know it will be bad what micronumbers should we be looking at what indicators have changed for you and your team . I think the data will be more important than looking at todays friday payroll report. Things like home base will be critical can you get useful information from google trends right now, this is shocking but we are using google trends on a regular basis to model out what will happen from a claims perspective. It is working pretty well. So highfrequency data things that come out on a daily basis. Those are two we are watching. From Bigger Picture to more micro. Looking at the traffic data in china.
