Thanks for being here, everybody. At this hour, it happened again. Flags lowered to halfstaff at the white house and the u. S. Capitol once again. The city of san jose, california, joining the long and growing list of cities in america that are tragically marked marked bypass shootings. This is the 17th Mass Shooting in the last week. And there have been 232 Mass Shootings so far this year. The gunman tacked his own workplace, a rail yard in san jose, a Terrifying Scene that unfolded during our show yesterday. 24 hours ago we were starting to grasp how bad this be would. This morning authorities tell cnn this massacre could have been even worse from the weapons the shooter was carrying to the new details of Bomb Components that police found at the crime scene. Cnns Josh Campbell is live in san jose with the layest. Josh latest, josh, what you are hearing . Another day, another mass murder in the United States of america. As you mentioned, this is the 17th Mass Shooting in the past week. There have been 232 this year. This, of course, raising the question for lawmakers how much mass murder is acceptable . Nine more families in the United States are starting their grieving the loss of a loved one killed by fgunfire. Reporter this morning, Law Enforcement is investigating why a Gunman Opened Fire at a Commuter Rail yard in san jose, california, killing nine people. We dont know anything about the motive right now. However, they were all employees of the transit district. They worked together. They were there together. Reporter the shots started ringing out around 6 30 a. M. Once we received that received, deputies and surrounding officers immediately responded to the location. And addressed the threat. They did not wait. They immediately went to the scene and rendered first aid and rescued victims. Reporter the gunman identified as sam cassidy was an employee. And he had multiple guns. I know for sure that when the suspect knew the Law Enforcement was there, he took his own life. Reporter authorities also sweeping the area for possible explosives. And while emergency crews arrived it at the rail yard, nearly ail nearly eight miles away, firefighters responding to a blaze that believed to be the home of the shooters. Its a very kblechl invest complex investigation. Were putting the house fire together. Reporter nine people lost their lives in the massacre. One of them was michael, his Friend A Councilman Writing there are no words to describe the heartache were feeling right now especially for his family. That heartache echoing throughout the city. Its a heartbreaking moment for all of us. And weve got a lot of families grieving and a lot of colleagues mourning the loss of their friends. Reporter at the white house, President Biden urging congress to take action on gun reform, saying enough. Every life that is taken by a bullet pierces the soul of our nation. We can and we must do more. Meanwhile, in california, governor newsome expressing frustration and raising this question to the nation as it copes with yet another Mass Shooting. There is a numbness, i imagine some of us are feeling about this. Because there is a sameness to this. You know anywhere usa. It just feels like this happens over and over and over again, rinse and repeat. What the hell is going on in the United States of america . What the hell is wrong with us . Now, kate, i spoke just a short time ago with the sheriff who provided us new details on their investigation. Were learning about the weaponry that was used here, the sheriff telling me the suspect had two handguns as well as 11 magazines, a lot of ammunition that was brought here to this rail yard for that Mass Shooting. Were also learning new details from the share bif where y. We saw The Bomb Squad here on site yesterday. Take a listen to what she said. We had our canines there and they did a search. The some of our dogs alerted on what was his locker. Inside were precursor things for explosives. And so then there was the fire at his house and i know that there was another bomb squad there looking. I know they found additional rounds of ammo. A coward like him could have been planning to use it. I dont know. With nine victims right now and my heart goes out to them, who could know what he is thinking . Now finally the sheriff told me they are currently executing Search Warrants on the suspects house, the suspects vehicle as well as his communication devices. Kate, at this hour, they still do not yet have a motive. That remains under investigation to try to determine why this Mass Shooting took place yesterday. Of course, just the latest mass murder here in the United States. Kate . Josh campbell, thank you very much. Joining me right now is sam lacar it ta, the mayor of san jose, california. Mayor, thank you for being here. How are you doing . How is the city doing today . Good morning, kate. The numbness is wearing off. I think the reality is setting in for so many of our families and colleagues who lost their loved ones and friends. And so were i think were hopefully going to begin this process of healing. We have a viblg gil later at ci hall. We have to do everything we can to support the families at this horrible time. We heard the sheriff say that Sheriffs Office employees are related to some of the victims. I spoke to a City Councilman who lost a long time friend that he has known since childhood. The it is striking how it is a personal tragedy for, of course, the families of the victims and so many more in your community. I mean, what do you do with this . Well, we become desensitized to Mass Shootings in this country until they hit community. And here in san jose, were a city of a million people, we have the lowest crime rates in the country among big cities. So this really is an epidemic which none of us are safe. We have to do more. To combat gun violence. Congress needs to step up. I dont pretend any slaw going to stop Mass Shootings in the country. But we all need to do more starting with me and were pushing forward with several more initiatives to reduce gun violence, to address some of the Mental Health issues and obviously we have to do more to at least reduce the risk those with guns may use them in this manner. Youre speaking to this right now. I do want to play once again what governor newsome said yesterday. He spoke for a lot of people in how in what has been on everyones mind. Listen to this. Here we are. In the United States of america, we experience something that is not experienced anywhere else in the world. There is a sameness to this. And that numbness. I think that is something were all feeling. It begs the question, what the hechlt. Hell is going on in the United States of america . What the hell is wrong with us . Mayor, how do you answer that . Its not a secret why america seems to have this pandemic of Mass Shootings. Virtually no other industrialized nation suffers. And that is because we have as many guns as we have people in this country. There say big different between our gun laws and those in other countries. We have to do more on the Mental Health front and we need congress to take action. Mayors across the country are pushing the envelope on solutions because we cant get congress to act. So were experiencing fees so the public doesnt bear the financial cost for gun violence. You know, this is this is a situation that needs leadership certainly within congress. But its a situation where you see mayors throughout you cant t country and im hearing it, were trying everything we can do to try to contain gun violence in our own cities. And until we see Congress Stepping up, youre going to see us all pushing very hard. I want to read for you what one employee who was at the rail yard at the time yesterday. What he told local station about what he saw. He wrote he said that i do know that he had a specific agenda and was targeting certain people. He walked by people. He let other people live as he gunned down other people. And the sheriff also said that they found components of a bomb, components of explosives in the shooters locker. Has it settled in on you how much worse this actually could have even been . Its hard to imagine. Very fortunate. They arrived at the scene. And what we see in it active shooter cases throughout the country is high propensity for the shooters to turn the gun on themselves as soon as Law Enforcement arrives. So having Law Enforcement get there immediately saves lives. And in this case, were fortunate they were there and the sheriffs deputies behind them. I do want to end on where the f focus should remain on the nine vekts and the lives changed and families shattered. Put the names up on the screen, the nine victims of this shooting. Nine lives lost. Nine families and far, far more, the ripple effects impossible to calculate at this moment. These are the nine lives lost yesterday and the people we need to lift up and families we need to keep in our thoughts. This feels so it now feels so redundant and so wrong to even say it. These are families that still do need our prayers right now even though we have had to say that so many times. Mayor, thank you. Thank you. Thank you for lifting up our families. Thank you. Coming up for us, Senate Republicans are ready to block the Bipartisan Incommission to investigate the capital in insurrection. Also, a march to demand justice for ronald green and demand accountability for the state Police Officers involved. Were going to speak with greens family ahead. Why do we sign every steans foster® . Senate republicans just put out their latest Counter Offer to President Bidens massive infrastructure package. The republican counter is now at an overall pricetag of 928 billion. It includes more than 500 billion for roads and bridges plus money for public transit, broadband, airports and passenger and freight rail among other things. This plan though fell short of the 1 trillion pricetag that republicans said the president was open to during the discussions at the white house. So a glimmer of hope . Maybe. Its at least not a flat out no. But it is still far from a done deal. Also happening on the hill at this hour, the senate is expected to vote on the bipartisan independent commission to investigate the january 6th attack on the toll. But ahead of the vote, a very emotional plea. The mother of slain u. S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick is on the hill meeting with republican senators pleading with them to support the commission. We are live on the hill with more on this. P what are you hearing about all this . Well, republicans are confident that they will have the votes to defeat this Commission Bill as expected to come up later today. They need to prevent ten republicans from breaking ranks to open debate. The belief is that the argument that Mitch Mcconnell is making publicly and privately to colleagues is working. That they believe this commission in their view would be politically damaging, would be used for democrats to help keep control of Congress Next year in the midterms. And ultimately, they dont want the commission to go forward. The investigation will keep january 6th in the news. It could be damaging politically for their party. I just had a chance to try to ask Mitch Mcconnell about all this, about whether or not hes been working his colleagues and he made clear that hes made his position clear. Are you concerned about losing ten republicans on the january 6th vote . Do you think that may happen . Are you working your members to vote against them . Lobbying them . So i asked him later would he meet with Brian Sicknicks mother, the fallen officer here who died after defending this capitol building. He did not respond when i asked him that. But im told his staff is, in fact, having a conversation with Brian Sicknicks mother. Sbut but is very clear the conversations she is having, while emotional and members responding, while she is having to more than a dozen meetings, it is unlikely to sway republican votes. One senator ron johnson who met with Brian Sicknicks mother put out a statement saying he is still committed to getting the answers. He said he disagrees with having a commission going forward. And you can see on your screen there some republicans who are meeting with Susan Collins of maine will will vote to advance this. Mitt romney will meet to advance this bill. A number of the other republican senators are no votes. Theyre going to make that position known when they meet with her later today. Kate . Thank you very much. At this hour, sources around donald trump tell Cnns Jim Acosta they see an indictment as inevitable in the criminal investigation into the former president , his inner circle and family business. Cnn also learned that prosecutors have told at least one witness to be ready to testify in front of a grand jury, a sign the Manhattan District Attorneys Office is moving into a crucial new phase of its two year long investigation into whether the Trump Organization committed financial crimes. Joining me now is our cnn legal analyst and former federal and state prosecutor. The fact prosecutors are likely to call at least one witness, what does it tell you about where they are in this investigation . Well, kate, i think theyre at the gbeginning of the end game. Theyre carrying on this investigation for two years now. And realistically, theyre on the clock. They have this grand jury and panel for six months cy vance is leaving. I dont expect this to be a one witness case by any stretch. I expect this to be the first of many, many many cases going in front of the grand jury. The way they do things at the state, they require each individual witness to testify in front of the grand jury n contrast, when i was a federal prosecutor, i had the luxury of being able to sit with the fbi agent on the case who could go in and testify to the whole case in summary fashion in an afternoon. This is going to be a much lower witness by witness process in the state. Maybe it this is not against donald trump himself but someone close to him or the Trump Organization, do you think they are right to feel that way . I certainly do not think an indictment is inevitable against donald trump as an individual. I think the signs are there that the investigation is progressing. We have some sense of what the evidence is. And there does seem to be pretty clear evidence that the Trump Organization itself was engaged in fraud of some type. However, people need to remember, prosecutors need to have specific proof showing that donald trump knew about this fraud and authorized it. Its not enough to say donald trump was the boss. Of course he knew about this. He had to know about this. Fine you need actual proof. I dont know where theyre getting that proof. Maybe its in the documents this he have or the computers they seized. But thats what they need to indict donald j. Trump himself. And on Donald Trumps influence, a federal judge is warning that his election lie could still inspire more violence. I want to ask you about this. Judge jackson writes ill read it to you, this in a decision vofrg the january 6th rioters. The steady drum beat that inspired defendant to take up arms has not fade add way. Six months later the canard that election was stolen is repeated daily on major news outlets and from the corridors of power in state and federal government not to mention in the near daily fulminations of the former president. What do you think of this statement coming from a well respected judge . Well, its a strong statement from a very well respected judge and shes not alone. Other judges have made similar rulings. These rulings are happening in the context of bail hearings. Defendants charged but not tried. The judges question is this person a continuing risk . I think the logic here is really straight forward. What was the motive for the january 6th violence in the first place snt big lie . The lie that election was stolen. Well, is that lie still around . Absolutely. Its still being perpetrated by donald trump and others. And as long as that big lie is still around, then the motive to go in and commit more crimes whether its at the capitol or elsewhere still exists. I think the rulings from judge jackson and others really make a lot of sense. Certainly interesting. I know this is a left turn. I really do want to ask you about amy cooper. The white woman you remember charged last may for making a false Police Report after calling police on a black man in central park saying that he was threateninger had. I want to remind everyone of this incident. Please dont come close to me. Sir, im asking you to stop recording me. Please dont come close to me. Please dont come close to me. Turn off. Please call the cops. Please call the cops. Im going to tell them there is an africanamerican man threaten Man Threatening my life. Im being threatened, please send the cops immediately. So she is now filed a lawsuit. She is suing her former employer. They fired her right after the video went everywhere. And she now claims she was wrongfully terminated. Does she have a case . I dont like her chances one bit, kate. First of all, a private employer has fairly broad discretion in desiring who they hire and fire. And the gist of her argument is i wasnt given due process. The employer didnt do enough of an investigation before they fired me. I mean how much more would any reasonable person need to see than the video we just saw in order to justify this firing . So im not placing any bets on amy coopers chances here. Seeing that video once again is just i understand why it went so viral. Thank you. Appreciate it. Marching for Ronald Greene. Greenes family along with civil rights and Social Justice activists are demanding accountability. This afternoon theyre marching from the Louisiana Staut Capitol to the Governors Mansion to call for the state troopers involved in the deadly arrest to be fired, arrested and charged. Body cam video captures troopers tasing, beating and dragging green two years ago. Body camera video that did not become public until now, two years later, two years after his family was initially told, they say that, Ronald Greene died from a car crash. Joining me now is ron haley, one of the familys attorneys. Thank you for being here. Its my understanding that the Greene Family is meeting with the District Attorney this morning. What is the meeting about . Good morning, kate. The family along with some of my cocounsel are meeting with the District Attorney from the parish that the horrific murder of Ronald Greene took place. Since the bandaid is pulled off this, folks have been scrambling out here to try to make this right. Its my appreciation that the meeting with the District Attorney is to discuss if possible State Charges will be brought against the offending officers. Ron, is this the first time that the family or your counsel or any of you have met with the District Attorney about this . No. This is not the first time weve met. But this is the first time that we met since the public release of these videos. And learning of the second video of lieutenant john clary essentially orchestrating and directing and condoning the brutality that faced Ronald Greene on that fateful evening. Ron, do you take this meeting as a sign of progress . How should people read it . Listen, two years is never too late for justice. So were in the business of getting this family for Ronald Greene the justice that they deserve. And i believe that the awakening that is happening in the state of louisiana over the past week or so as it relates to what happened to mr. Greene are all steps in the right direction. But we want something meaningful. We want something that is going to make sense. What makes sense to us would be a charge of homicide on the officers that put their hands on Ronald Greene and we want those also to participate in the coverup that night and subsequently afterwards to face punishment as well. Ron, do you have any indication, you have gotten any indication or sense from the District Attorney if they also see this as a coverup as i know you do . I think its evident that it is a coverup. I think to the extent of the coverup that remains to be seen. But the fact that Body Cam Footage was not released on that evening, that the Commanding Officer at the scene purposely did not turn his in, then you can see them on Body Camera Base he cannily telling them to obstruct justice by tapping their button to say, listen, hey, were on were being recorded. Lets not talk too crazy while we murder Ronald Greene. That in itself shows there was a coverup. Now to the extent that coverup was limited to justice those in troop f or did that coverup extends all wait to headquarters in baton rouge, louisiana, were going to be diligent in making sure that take that. It is quite significant. It is on going now. The march. Citizens of this state and the neighboring states, and they lean on baton rouge, louisiana and theyre not p standing up t the rule. In particular, black and brown people. And they swept under the rug. And this is from the thousands of people that are going to be with us today is going to be something to see. Im curious as to what you read from when we learn that one of the officers involved is going to be fired, but not having anything to do with Ronald Greenes death, do you read do you read that as a bad sign about criminal charges, like, that criminal charges are likely not to be coming . Your reaction to that and what you think it actually means. Im going to shift gears a little bit, kate. What is really disturbing to me about that, right, i dont think has anything to do with criminal charges will be coming. I think what yale does show is why there needs to be transparency and accountability immediately. This officer who did something to Ronald Greene then subsequently did something to someone else because he was not held accountable at the time the incident took place. And thats really the big story. Or another subplot of the story. The fact that when you do not ring in the bad apples, these are not isolated incidents. These things happen over and over and over again. And this is just one example of that. Lets see what progress comes from today and the big rally happening with the family. Ron haley, thank you for coming on. Thank you, kate. Talk to you soon. Thank you very much. Coming up for us, did ohio find the secret recipe to getting more people vaccinated . Greenwood neighborhood of tuls yashgs oklahoma, an Oasis Of Black Prosperity became the site of one of the deadliest massacres in american history. A new cnn film dream land The Burning Of Black Wall Street shows what happened then and what is being done now to set the record straight. Here is a preview. So many people have said there were no bodies there. But, you know, all the folk in the community, with he believe theyre there. The stories were passed on to us. Reporter inch by inch, crews start digging into the history of the 1921 tulsa race massacre. Tulsas mayor initiated the investigation to try to find if there are any victims buried in mass graves. There was a systematic coverup of the event. It should not have taken 99 years. We have to pay attention. We have to pick up the charred baton that is left in our hands and figure out where the screams are coming from. Joining me now is christy williams, chair of the Greater Tulsa africanamerican affairs foundation. Its wonderful to meet you. Thank you for being here. Why is it important to you to take to be part of this film . And what do you hope people take away from what happened in the city and to your family . It was really important for me to be a part of this film because we need to tell our story our way. We need to tell our history our way. And while we have been silenced in this city for so long, and now that intention is here, it is really time to just, you know, tell the truth about what happened and for me to also talk about what happened to my family. You know, so many people in the film talk about how oklahoma schools dont teach the tulsa massacre in history classes. The why dont more people know this story . You know, its been hidden so long and i really believe that not only the city but the state of oklahoma, you know, they want to be shown in a positive light. They dont want to look bad. So for years they just kept this under the rug. It wasnt taught in our schools and just recently our governor signed house bill 1775 where we cant teach about our history because it makes white people uncomfortable. Press biden is coming to tulsa on tuesday to mark the anniversary. What do you want him what do you want him to see while hes there . I want him to see the impacts, the negative impacts that the massacre has had to black people in this city. I want him to see how i want him to see how the creek nation kicked us out of the tribes in 1979 and the loss of land that we have had and, you know, just the fight for were fighting for our humanity. Were fighting for our legacies on both ends with the tribes and with the city and state. And i want him to do something about it, especially now that the conversation of reparation has taken place. And there is no theres no better place to start with reparations than right here in oklahoma. And there are several times in the film where you can where they depict and show black lives matter painted on greenwood avenue. Past and present coming together and also making clear that the fight in the struggle is not over. What is your hope for the community of greenwood now . You know, my hope for the community of greenwood is that we follow the blueprint that our ancestors of greenwood left. Our ancestors built an economy within an economy right here in greenwood. We built a community of Strong Community and where we didnt have to go outside and seek help from white people. We did this ourselves. And if they can do it in the face of jim crow, we can definitely do it now. It is so important that we that we understand that. And not only that we understand it but we do it. And so thats one thing that i want to get out of this centennial. Everyone is celebrating like its a celebration. Its not a celebration. It is a commemoration and for disend descendants like me, its a benchmark to show were still stagnant. We have not grown in the right direction. We havent done so thats what this centennial reminds us of and we just want our voices to be heard and were tired of being falling victim to the empty symbolism that is happening through murals, we have some park benches dedicated to us so we can sit and reflect about what happened, a tree dedication. And none of that is reparations. None of that is repair for the loss that has happened. And when you talk about black lives matter being on the street in the heart of greenwood, were the only major city that has taken up our black lives matter mural. I mean, they took it its so it just reminds us that we are still in a very racist city, in a racist state, and, you know, this is an sos call for us. Kristi, thank you very much for coming on. I really appreciate your time. And just to remind all of you, you can watch more about this story and be sure to watch the new cnn film dreamland, The Burning Of Black Wall Street on monday at 9 00 p. M. Eastern only on cnn.
