Okay. Wally, last but not least. Amelia earhart, and Aviation Icon and now a space icon. What was it like . I cant tell you. I had such a good instructor. He took us through everything that we were going to do, so when i went up this morning, the Noise Wasnt quite as bad, and we went right on up, and i saw darkness. I thought i was going to see The World, but we werent quite high enough, and i felt great. I felt like i was just laying down. I was just laying down, and i was going into space. And i want to thank you, sweet heart, because you made it possible for me. Ive been waiting a long time to finally get it up there, and ive done a lot of Astronaut Training through The World, russia, america, and i could always beat the guys on what they were doing because i was always stronger and ive always done everything on my own, and i didnt do dolls. I did outside stuff. And i flew airplanes and i loved it. I love being here with All Of You. Your family. The four of us. We had a great time. It was wonderful. I want to go again, fast. And then when i got off the ship, they gave me the Tail End of one of the balloons, and im going to cherish that forever. And by the way, we can confirm that wally once again in training outperformed the men on the mission. 100 . I was going to say she beat the three boys up to the top of the crew access. Everybody saw that. Theres video footage. We have proof. Indeed, darling, you did. You did. So Wally Funk, now, The Worlds oldest astronaut to have ever gone to space, and perhaps, the first Founding Member of our Blue Origin frequent Flier Program . It sounds like shes ready for it. Wherever i am around The World in the united states, im only 45. Youre being generous. I keep saying every time somebody says theres 82, i think there a typo. Youre 28. We know this. Thank you for giving your impressions, lets see it with our own eyes. Id like to roll the tape of what it was like. Thasz incredible. Look. Oliver. Thats great. Can you move your head a little, wally, for us . Oh, yeah. Hi, mom. I love it. Here, catch. Oh, yeah. Woo hoo. Who wants a skittle . Yeah. Yeah. All right. See if you can catch this. Yes. Toss me one. Try again. Wow. Awesome. So good. This is incredible. Oh, i love it. I love it. Wow. This is different, isnt it . A little different. Wow. Wonderful. It was a good catch. Sure, go ahead. I was going to say that was a good catch. Wally, was It Everything you expected and more . Youve been waiting 60 years to experience this. I loved every minute. I wish it was longer. I had been in space, not in space, but up in that area, and could do a lot more rolls and twists and so forth, but there was not quite enough room for all four of us to do all those things. It was great. I loved it. I can hardly wait to go again. Amen. Next stop for you is the moon, wally. Yes, sir. Any other impressions now having seen the video of it . Is it one of those things where you just took it in and its hard to compare to video . What are the sensations that come from having seen that right now . It felt way cooler than it looked. True. Well, so after, of course, their four minutes of weightlessness, the fun you had, we got you buckled back in and you descended under the beautiful three parachutes. I think we have another video of your dissent back to our beautiful west texas valley. Lets roll that right now. That moment felt pretty good. Im not going to lie. When you see the three main chutes out, thats relaxing. That was so easy. It was just incredible. I didnt feel that. Did you . Thats because dust kicked up by a cushion of air. You only hit at about 1 miles per hour. [ cheers ] oh, my god. It was so good. Our family was happy to see us. Thats a good sign. What was that moment like coming back and seeing your friends and your family here . You have supported them, or they have supported you, that is. Your dreams to get to this point. Oliver, your father is here. Joseph, thank you for being here. What was that like . It was a bit more emotional than i would have thought. Everyone was very emotional on the ground. We were just having fun. Its so true. Yeah. Yeah. I think that our families have been extremely supportive through all of this. I think i know my wife was an absolute rock leading up to this. I made the adventure much easier for me, but i know that when we came down, it was sort of time to let the emotions out a little bit. So it was great to see everybody. And yeah, it was a little more emotional than i operated as well. Jeff . Yeah. I mean, you know, for i wasnt that nervous, but my family was somewhat anxious about this. And so it was it was so sweet, actually, to get hugged by them after landing. Especially my kids and lauren and my mom and dad, and really All Of You guys. And we have a bunch of close friends here, too. It just make me realize how much i love you, and how much im loved. And wally, your Friend Mary is here. Yes. I am so happy shes here. She knows what im going through. Shes been she was one of my Flight Students. Ive had many, many, 3,000 Flight Students and i dont know if theyre going to get to see this or not, but i felt so charged. I was not nervous. I was just normal, normal person going up into space, and thats what i wanted to feel. Nothing here. I can confirm that wally was never nervous. She was wondering what was taking so long. Its true. We had a six Minute Hold on the pad. And wally was like are we going to go or not . What the hell . Were burning daylight. Lets go. [ laughter ] but then wally, once we got you going, we got you going fast, going over milwaukee 3 mach 3. And its this beautiful ship that got the team up to space, and by the way, it also, of course, made its landing back on the landing pad. Why dont we take a look at that landing that we have here. That was a bulls eye. Absolutely bullseye. Jeff, a beautiful piece of engineering our team has developed. Would you like to talk to us a little bit about why we chose vertical takeoff, Vertical Landing, being powered by this Be3 Engine . Today is not the end. Right . Were going further with this technology. Thats a helpful question, because the fact of the matter is that the Architecture And Technology we have chosen is complete overkill for a Tourism Mission. We have chosen the Vertical Landing architecture, why did we codo that . It scales. It can grow to large size. We want to have experience with architectures that can grow big to new glenn and one day to new Arm Strong. To have the idea that you want to build big from the beginning lets you choose an architecture. The point is to get practice. And other kinds of architectures dont scale in the same way to large size. Vertical landing does. In fact, you can think about it easily, because if you try to when you are landing a rocket vertically, you are solving whats called the inverted pendulum problem. Youre balancing a Broom Stick on the tip of your finger. You can balance a Broom Stick on the tip of your finger. What you cant is a pencil. Basically the smaller the object, the harder it is to balance. As the object gets bigger, it gets easier to balance. Its similar. This has more momentum. So t easier to get under it. So that architecture skills. Thats why we chose it. The Tsecond Thing that is puzzling to most people who know about rockets, you would never choose liquid hydrogen. Its unnecessary. Its the most powerful, highest performing Rocket Fuel in The World. And there are two reasons we chose it. First is, again, practice. We chose that propellant, because its its what you see behind me is basically the second stage of new glen. And so every time we fly this Tourism Mission, were practicing flying the second stage of new glen. And thats where you really do Want Hydrogen On The Second Stage of a vehicle that is designed not only to go into low Earth Orbit but to bodies outside of the Earth Orbit. And then the other reason we chose it is because it is the most environmentally benign propellant you can choose. When you burn hydrogen and oxygen, you get H2 O. Its water. And its thats another thing. For a Tourism Mission, that was important to us as well. Thats why we chose this architecture you see behind me, and the Engineering Team did an incredible job. They also really built two vehicles. What you see is not really a vehicle. Because i could assure you the Escape System was at least as complicated, hard to design, and to test and demonstrate as the main booster itself. So that was its almost like building a whole separate vehicle. Im also extremely happy we didnt test it today. Thank you so much, again. Congratulations to you all. With that, im going to turn it over to linda mills, head of communications here at Blue Origin to start the press conference. Thank you, very much. Lets Give Another round of applause to our amazing, newly minted astronauts. All right. I would like to Give A thank you to our journalists who showed up at 2 30 this morning to get set up. I know its been a long day for All Of You. I cant believe you guys are still smiling. Thank you. Well be able to take a few questions and then well pose for a few photos. Rachel, why dont you start . Rachel with cnn. Congratulations, you guys, on your astronaut wings. Thank you. Jeff, you said in the past the work youre doing with Blue Origin is the most important of your career. You recently stepped down as korea of a ceo of amazon. Can we expect you to be more hands on with Blue Origin . Im going to split my time between Blue Origin and the bezos Earth Fund. The Earth Fund is about Climate Change and sustainability, and that is those two things. Theres going to be a third and maybe fourth thing, but i dont know what they are. Im not very good at doing one thing. Reporter will you be flying again soon . Hell yes. How fast can you refuel that thing . Lets go. All right. Next question . Lets go roeuters. Reporter [ Inaudible Question ] he asked about the cadence and the capabilities. Okay. Were going to fly the Human Missions twice more this year, and what we do in the following year, im not sure yet. Well figure that out. And what the cadence will eventually be, we want it to be very high. One thing we found out through the Auction Process and what weve been doing as private sales, were approaching 100 Million in private sales already, and the demand is very, very high. So were going to keep after that. Because we really do want to practice with this vehicle. Were going to have to build more boosters and to fly more frequently, and were going to work on the operational things we need to do, the things we learned. What practice does is lets you get better. We want to be able right now we have a Mission Life we think sometime somewhere between 25 and 100 flights for one of these vehicles. We like to make that closer to 100 than to 25. Once its close to 100, well push it past 100. Thats how you debt operational usability. You have to remember, big things start small. I told this crew when we got in today, we were sitting on the Pad Waiting to lift off. We had time to ourselves. And i just sort of guys, if you are willing, let me invite you. When we get up there, and theres going to be all kinds of adrenaline, all kinds of excitement and novelty. But take a minute. Take a few seconds to look out and calmly think about what were doing. Its not only adventure. It is adventure and fun, but its also important. Because what were doing is the first step of something big. And i know what that feels like. I did it three decades ago, almost three decades ago with amazon. And we are big things start small. And but you can tell. You can tell when youre onto something. And this is important. Were going to build a road to space so that our kids and their kids can build the future. And we need to do that. We need to do that to solve the problems here on earth. This is not about escaping earth. Every time i read an article about people i know escaping earth. I say no, the whole point is this is the this is the only good planet in the Solar System. Weve sent robotic probes to all of them. This is the only good one. I promise you. We have to take care of it. And if you go to space and see how frang ill it is, youll want to take care of it even more. This is going to take decades. Big things start small. And this is how it starts. And we are going to build an infrastructure just like when i started amazon, i didnt have to build the postal service. Or royal Mail Or Deutsche post. There were people there were already gigantic worldwide infrastructure to deliver packages. That Infrastructure Today is for space its Expense Iveand doesnt work. But if we can practice with the Tourism Mission and continue and build bigger vehicles, timelines on new Arm Strong and i cant give you because we dont know, but what i can tell you is were going to keep working at those Things Step by step ferociously. I want to emphasize the ferociously. All right. We have time for one last question. Tom with nbc. Reporter congratulations to All Of You. Jeff, to follow up on that question and your discussion there. How do you make this more reasonable for everyday people who would like to fly . Its pretty steep right now. How do you bring the cost down so this can be more accessible for everybody . Its a great question. How do you bring the cost down over time so its more accessible to everyone . Youve got to do it the same way we did it with commercial airline travel. You know, we are still were not even were really almost in the barn stormer phase. Right . So this is. These are biplanes, and theyre flying into a Farmers Field and charging a small price to fly people around for a few minutes in the air. Thats what were doing right now. You know where that barn storming phase leads . To 787s. And thats what we have to do. All right. Lets Give A im afraid thats all the time we have for questions today. These astronauts have had a long day. So lets Give Another round of applause for our astronauts. I have one more thing. I have a little surprise for you. I am announcing today a new philanthropic initiative, and if you could put the slide up so people can see it, it is called the Courage And Civility award. It recognizes leaders who aim high and pursue solutions with courage who always do so with civility. Let me tell you how i feel about this. I feel strong enough i actually wrote something down. We live in a world where sometimes instead of disagreeing with someones ideas, we question their character or their motives. Guess what. After you do that, its pretty hard to work with that person. And really, what we should always be doing is questioning ideas. Not the person. Attacks dont work and theyve been amplified by social media. We need unifiers and not vilifiers. We need people who argue act and act hard for what they truly believe but they do that always with civility and never attacks. And unfortunately, we live in a world where this is too often not the case. But we do have role models. And this award do you have another slide here . Go ahead. Its first i didnt tell you what the award was. I thought there was a slide for that. Heres what the award is. You see who the first recipient is, but let me tell you the award. The Courage And Civility award is a 100 Million award so that the awar dee, the recipient can give 100 Million to the charities, the nonprofits of their choice. And these are people who have demonstrated courage. By the way, its easy to be courageous but also mean. Try being courageous and civil. Try being courageous and a unifier. Thats harder. And way better. It makes The World better. So we have two Recipients Today who will each get 100 Million to direct to the charities of as they see fit. They do what they want. It can be their own charity or share the wealth. Its up to them. The first Courage And Civility award goes to Van Jones. Van, come on up. Thank you, brother. Sometimes dreams come true. Sometimes dreams come true. And the headlines around The World should be anything is possible if you believe. Lauren and jeff dont do nothing small. They dont do anything small. They dont do it. They dream big. They love big. They bet big. And you bet on me. And i appreciate it. Im going to tell you, the only thing i worry about when you say courage, i havent always been courageous. But i know the people who are. They get up every day on the frontlines, Grass Roots communities. They dont have much, but theyre good people and fight hard and they dont have enough support. Can you imagine Grass Roots folks from an latch sha, the hood, Native American Reservations having enough money to be able to connect with the geniuses that have disrupted the space industry, disrupted taxis and hotels and bookstores, to start disrupting poverty . To start disrupting pollution . To start disrupting the 90 Billion Prison Industry together . If you take people on the frontlines and their wisdom and their Genius And Creativity and give them a shot, theyre not just going to turn around neighborhoods. Theyre going to turn around the nation. Thats whats going to happen, and i appreciate you for lifting the ceiling off of peoples dreams. You have lifted the ceilings off of the dreams of humanity today. And thats an important thing. Dont be mad about it. When you see somebody reaching for the heavens, be glad. Because a lot more heaven is up there to reach for, and we can do that together. Last thing ill say is this. If this small group of people can make miracles happen in outer space, a bigger group of people can make miracles happen down here, and were going to do it. Thank you very much. Guys, could you roll the video we put together about Van Jones . Can you put that together . Van has been a part of much change. He has burned a number of different Grass Roots organizations. He also helped us bring together Climate Justice and racial justice, and what that meant in particular for low income communities of color. You cant live in a country where you just have Sacrifice Zones whether its south central or the rust belt, and no political party stands up for them. He was always to ahead of the curve. A lot of people didnt understand him. So that was always hard to watch, because i know his love for people and for justice, it doesnt matter to him what people say. He continues to do the work that needs to be done. I think about what hes done within criminal justice. What hes done with making bipartisanship real. Not just what think tanks are doing. Not researching the idea. Not exploring in history how bipartisanship worked. Hes been rolling up his sleeves and doing the work in real life. [ applause ] and i know that Van Jones is going to do something amazing with that 100 Million. I dont know what yet. I bet he doesnt know what yet. But its in your hands, Van Jones. However youre going to do it, its going to work. We had lunch together a couple weeks ago, and he told me that he was telling me some of his life story. He mentioned that when he was a young activist, he was angry. He had he was like there was a big transformation that happened over the years. He said the acronym he used was rap. Reward and punishment. And if the mayor or whoever it was that they were going up against did something they liked, they rewarded them. If they didnt something they didnt like, they punished them. He said honestly, i wasnt very good at the reward part. I focussed on the punishment part. And then he changed. I mean, he really the transformation, when you hear his story is unbelievable. And profound. And inspiring. And you can always and i think about this for myself. You wake up. Every night when you go to sleep, you get the chance to wake up better tomorrow. Now we have another recipient. Lets roll that video. He calls himself a pilgrim from spain. A chef who arrived here 20 years ago with 50 on his pocket, but these days its hard to call him anything less than an amazing american success story. I know you. His love of his fellow men and women, his love of eating which he shares with all of us. He is bigger than life. A force of nature. And a real gift. He has won James Beard Awards for outstanding chef and humanitarian of the year. Jose andres is turning his restaurants into community kitchens. He has helped feed those in the Disaster Areas in the u. S. And around The World. Every time i meet you, its because theres a disaster somewhere in The World and like a Super Hero of food, youve stepped in to help feed people. He wants to bring people together, and he uses food to do that. Someone needs to be generous and give back so much to people in need without us jose, please come on up. [ applause ] and he makes a hell of a pie. Im grateful for this award. And the incredible support from you, jeff, and the entire bezos family. Our kitchen was born from a simple idea that food has the power to create a better world. A plate of food is a plate of hope. Its the fastest way to rebuild lives and communities. And this award itself cannot achieve it on its own, but this a start of a new chapter for us. It allows us to think beyond the next hurricane, to the bigger challenges we face. You know, people all over The World, i mean, now is the time to think really big. To solve hunger with the first urgency of now. The only thing we want to do is revolutionize Disaster And Hunger relief. People want our respect. Its the least we can do is be next to them when things get tough. We want to double aid around The World. And we want to change the way Three Billion people mainly women cook their Food Today from Dirty Cook Stoves to clean cook stoves. Youre watching a press conference. And interviews. Jeff bezos and his team have been giving here. He announced a new award, Courage And Civility award. 100 Million given to Van Jones who if you watch cnn regularly, you know well. And also chef Jose Andreas. Jose right now is speaking. Well try to speak to him later tonight tonight. Well broadcast from here later tonight. None of us knew anything about it. I did see jose yesterday. I thought maybe hes cooking for people here. Clearly, i did not pick up on what he was doing here. But obviously, the big Story Today is the launch. The successful Launch And Return of the spacecraft that they had been working on here. New spacecraft for civilians brought up 62 miles into space, into the air off the surface of the earth. Off the sea level. And returning safely. Im here with christen fisher, also joined by Cnnaero Space Analyst myles oh wrien. A lot came out of the press conference. Bezos really talked more about the kind of infrastructure of space that he believes this is kind of a steppingstone so to the that road. He said big things start small, and he really relayed his experience from building amazon. He said you know, i know what it feels like. I know what it looks like when youre onto something. I had that feeling when i started amazon, and he says hes having it again now with this beginning of Blue Origin. He also talked about with the beginning of amazon. Its something he said. I heard him speak years ago about this. When he created when he started amazon, when he founded amazon, there was an infrastructure. There was the postal service. There was federal express. There was possibility of paying online. And because of that, he was able to stand on the shoulders of others who had created those things. He sees a Blue Origin, whether hell be successful or not as building that infrastructure for future generations to then innovate in ways we cant imagine. Thats right. And he said this is not about escaping earth. Thats something that drives Jeff Bezos nuts. He says this is about protecting earth. He says were never going to find another planet, another moon in our Solar System or another galaxy like this as beautiful and livable as earth. So thats different from what Elon Musk talks about. He talks about Cbuilding Colonis on mars. Bezos, two different visions. I think Jeff Bezos got the memo that some people were upset that all these billionaires are spending so much money in space with that donation to Van Jones. 100 Million for him to do whatever he wants with. And Jose Andreas as well. He also said hes going to be spending his time now that hes stepped down as ceo of amazon, he remains as chairman, hes going to be spending his time a lot more time on Blue Origin. He said in the past he thinks its the most important Thing Hell do in his life. Also focussed on Climate Change here on earth. His Earth Fund. And you said one or two other things he hasnt figured out yet but he likes to do multiple things at once. Lets look inside the capsule after it had disconnected from the booster rocket. And lets watch and listen to them floating in space. Is It Everything you thought it would be . Fantastic. Look. Oliver. Thats great. Can you move your head a little wally, for us . Oh, yeah. Hi, mom. I love it. Oh, my. Look at the blackness of space. Oh, yeah. Wa hoo. See if you can catch this one. Yeah. Toss me one. There it goes. Try again. I cant get it up. No. Here it comes. So good. Oh, wow. Oh, my god. This is incredible. Oh, i love it. I love it. Wow. Man, this is different, isnt it . A little different. I cannot and myles joins us as well. Its interesting watching that. I mean, you got a sense at how short a time they were actually weightless. I think it was three minutes or so. From start to finish the journey took a little measure ten minutes under 11 minutes. You know, bezos talked about looking outside, looking out the window and seeing the curvature of the earth. Seeing space. Sort of seeing the thin atmosphere. Hard to do that when theyre also flipping around. It was a lot it was a short amount of time that they had a lot to do. A short amount of time, and once they started floating around, not as much space as youd probably like to really get the sense of being super man. Right . And so four people in there. I know it can hold six people. That would be even tighter. You know, im watching it. First, is Wally Funk a national treasure or what . I mean, she and the rest of the mercury 13, those women who went through the rigorous Training Back in early 1960s to be in the Astronaut Core and never got to fly, what a travesty. The fact that she got to fly today is a great thing. And shes just a joy to listen to and to watch her experience that. Really, it makes a tremendous connection to those of us on the ground and makes you understand the Thrill And Joy of it all. Im curious how much they were able to process in that short period of time. Just the colors and the curvature of the earth and the darkness of the sky and the fact that they were floating. And the other thing i take away is it looks like nobody was feeling sick. Thats good, too. That happens to a lot of people when they go to space. Yeah. I want to bring in Van Jones on the phone. Someone at cnn apparently has his Phone Number so we were able to get him. Winner of the Courage And Civility award. Van jones, congratulations. This is certainly not this is i had no we obviously had no idea about this. What do you when did you hear about this . When did this happen . I was this weekend i was walking by myself down a path, and my phone rang. It was Jeff Bezos. He talked to me for nine minutes and eight seconds. He said he thought that my attempts to try to bring people together across party and racial lines has been inspiring to him and could i use some more support and that he wanted to give me this award. And i im not usually speechless, as you know, but i didnt really know what to say. I still dont know what to say, but i do know, for sure, that theres so many people out there that can use t not money for Van Jones. Its money for me to give to others who have a similar spirit, and im going to tell you, anderson, as you know, there are millions and millions of americans who get up every day and do brutally hard work and reach across the lines of Race And Class every day. They dont get Support Or Recognition the way they should. And hopefully we can do something about it now. Just on a personal note, when he told you this, when he said he wanted to give you an award, did he say its a 100 Million award or just an award . Well, he said it was an award. We talked, and then lauren kind of mentioned, his partner, mentioned the dollar amount. And i was already speechless, and then i was kind of breathless. I really didnt know what to say. I started speaking incoherently. He might have decided to withdraw the money after that Point Nchts i was making to sense. I may not be making sense now. You have people coming out of prisons, people in native reservations, people at the border. All the people. This country is unbelievable what people are doing and how much heart they have and how much love. They dont care about these things that we divide over sometimes, and they need support. If we can lift them up and get them together and connect them with more resources, its going to make a big difference. I appreciate Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez so much. Its extraordinarily when you think about you and i and people at cnn we see people do extraordinary things and people who dont have access to power or money. And theres all the times when you think if this person had access to this person or this person had access to some funds, that, you know, they could make a change in their community. Sometimes it starts out as a small thing. Sometimes its a big one. Absolutely. And one of the things you see, sometimes the best local change makers are the worst fundraisers. Sometimes people who are good at raising Money Arent as good as helping people make their lives better. Well, we have a chance now to try to fix that a little bit. People in the criminal Justice Community always say the people closest to the problem are closest to the solutions, too, but theyre the farthest from resources and power. And as a result of this, and what jeff is doing, and i think hes going to do more, we might be able to flip that a little bit and give some people a shot, and the other thing i know is that people in the Hightech And Finance world and holy wide, people who are the elites, they would love to be connected to people who are out there every day trying fight. Its not that people are awful. People are awesome. We just dont know each other. We cant find each other. We dont know what it is. If we can get the awesome people at all levels of society working together, the awful people will start to look small real fast. Thats what i want to focus on. Well, congratulations, van. Its an extraordinary day for you and a lot of people. Appreciate you talking to us. Were going to toss now for chris here in texas. Were going to toss it to John King and inside politics. John . Thank you, anderson. Hello, everybody. Welcome to whats left of inside politics. Some very important news we need to bring you today. Today the Cdc Director sounding the alarm as the united states reaches another Coronavirus Cross roads. Daily new infections have tripled. Tripled in the last month. The nasty Delta Variant now accounts for 4 of 5. Every new 4 of 5 infections. Areas with limited Vaccine Coverage are allowing for the emergence and rapid spread of the highly transmisable Delta Variant. Cdc released estimates of variants across the country and predicted the Delta Variant now represents 83 of sequenced cases. This is a dramatic increase up from 50 for the week of july third. Think about that. Up from just july 3rd. Now 83 . The Delta Variant which is driving this. All the red and orange you see on this map. 44 of our states now going up. More new covid infections than a week ago. Even the Bay States Holding steady. Five of them. Modest increases in the states. Most of america in most states, most communities reporting more new infections. Heres another way to look at it. At the Cdcs Map of Community Transmission, you dont want to be red on this map. And you do not want to be orange on the map. Look at the red and orange. Community spread spence if iing in many areas of the country. One more way to look at it is the case trend. A month ago we were reporting 11,351 new covid infections. In a month up to nearly 35,000 new infections a day. And as you heard, it says 80 plus are because of the Delta Variant. At this point lets bring in to share insights, lena wynn, the former baltimore city health commissioner. Put into context the importance of what the doctor said there. Not only about the four of every five new infections is the Delta Variant. What does that tell us about the crisis . We are trending in the wrong direction again, john. This is something that didnt have to happen, because we actually have the way to prevent this from happening through the vaccine. But at this point the Delta Variant is dominant. If you become infected with covid19 at this point, you should assume that its because of the Delta Variant. That Delta Variant is ripping through our communities. People who are unvaccinated are going to get it. I have to say how unfair this is, especially for our young children. They didnt make the choice to not be vaccinated. And yet, those who are choosing not to be unvaccinated are endangering our children and those who are compromised. Again, help me. Im going to put the Map Up that shows the red and orange that i hoped was a thing of the past. Its back. That means more covid infections than last week. The Surgeon General says now even though we were in a place where we thought we were relaxing our use of masks, listen to the doctor. He says given how nasty the variant is, even the vaccinated should consider keeping their masks on. Our kids who cannot get vaccinated, they depend on us being vaccinated to protect them from this spread of the virus. If youre out there and youve got kids at home or youre compromised and youre thinking should i be more cautious and put my mask on when im going to indoor spaces . I would strongly consider that. This is not the time to let down our guard. Not only not the time to let down our guard, but is it time for states, localitlocalities, businesses, schools, public buildings to start to say put your mask back on if you want to walk through the doors . Well, i would say that right now i completely agree with the doctor. Those of us who are living at home with young kids or people who are particularly susceptible to covid19, that we should really be on guard. And what we know about the Delta Variant is that the vaccines we have protect you very well for you as if you become infected with the Delta Variant. Youre probably not going to end up in the hospital or die. Thats very important. Studies also show that if you get the Delta Variant, you are carrying around 1,000 times more virus than with the original variant. So if youre vaccinated, you might have a chance of transmitting it to other people around you. And so if you have young kids at home, for example, as i do, i certainly do wear my mask in public places when im around others who could potentially be unvaccinated. I agree if unvaccinated and vaccinated people are mixing in public places, if theres no proof of vaccination by indoor Mask Mandates should remain. Let me ask about vaccination. One, an official who works at the White House and a top aide to pelosi have Breakthrough Covid cases. They were at an event together. How is it still rare . The Breakthrough Cases or are we seeing more and learning more of them because theyre high profile individuals or are there more of them . Oh, there are certainly a lot more. The cdc for whatever reason that they have not fully explained stopped tracking mild Breakthrough Infections a couple months ago. Thats a mistake. We really need to understand how common this is. Who its happening to. Is it older people or people with underlying medical conditions who got a certain vaccine. We need to understand how many people who get Breakthrough Infections end up severely ill. Its probably a small number. The more tracking we do, the more it paints the picture that the vaccine protects you well. We also need to know if youre vaccinated and get a breakthrough infection, are you still able to transmit it to others or are you very well protected . Thats the question so many parents want to know the answer to and the cdc needs to get these answers to the american people. We need more data and not less. We really cannot repeat the mistakes of the Trump Administration when the models seem to be if we dont test for it, its not there. When actually, if you dont test for it, its there. You just dont know about it. One more question related to vaccines, i want to show the importance of the vaccines. With Community Transmission now at red and orange levels around much of the country, this is why you need to get a vaccine to protect yourself and protect everybody around you. We learned a short time ago that congressman steve scalise, the number two in the house republican leadership says just this weekend he got a vaccine. And its being reported back home in louisiana he got his first shot. It was more than 7 months ago the vaccines were first improved. I guess should we take this as finally progress and example. Or is it just why in The World did you wait seven months . I think both could be true at the same time. Do i wish that he got the vaccine many months ago . Of course. But i also think that there is some value to people who were initially hesitant to getting the vaccine for them to explain what got them to change their mind. I hope the congressman and many others are going to take the majority at this point and recognize that vaccines are lifesaving and this is for their constituents, the people they serve. He does say hes now recommending to his constituents they get them. Lets hope were in a new chapter there. Grateful for your time and insights. Up next, a big day. This morning no clear answer from the House Speaker on whether she will approve kevin mccarthys picks for the January 6th select committee. With me in studio to share the reporting and the insights, kaitlyn collins, jonathan morton, katherine lucy, and tia mitchel. Appreciate All Of Your patience. Lets put up the five picks for the select committee. Three of them you see voted essentially to reject the fact that Joe Biden won the election. They would not vote to certify the Election Results. And all of them voted no on the impeachment of donald trump. The question is what does this signal for this committee. I mean, it gets clear mccarthy sending a message about how to approach this. Jim Jordan Others have been critical of the process. If you look back at how he handled the president , the Impeachment Attempts with President Trump, it was a defender of President Trump. Really consistently argued this is a witch hunt. And you see more of that kind of rhetoric, i think as they try and frame their arguments going into next year, questioning the premise of this. Mccarthy is trying to thread the needle of not putting on the Marjorie Taylor greenes and others that make a mockery of the whole thing, but at the same time hes not putting an enemy of the tent of those who impeached trump. Hes trying to find what i think in Todays House is basically a way the mainstream of their caucus, that would be a shock to folks in the House Gop or familiar with it. But thats what this is today. Basically pro trump, but not so sort of flamboyant that its going to cause mccarthy some embarrassment. But it will be interesting given the tension between jim Jordan And Liz cheney over how they have viewed the future of the Republican Party and how it should go. We should note for the White House, theyve been differential to House Speaker pelosi about how shes going to handle this, her final decision about the members. They said they believe republicans could act in Gad Faith on the committee. They havent said if they believe republicans who voted to overturn the Election Result against impeachment and some of the members joined onto that Texas Lawsuit to invalidate the results in several states can act in good faith. Its interesting in the sense that Leader Mccarthy did not make heres essentially your trial run. We can show the pictures of the members again. Congressman bank gets to prove, ill defend Leader Mccarthy who could be a witness. Jim jordan is number two. We know him from impeachment hears and we hear this last night. Expect this as a common theme from the republicans. Have you had any indication Speaker Pelosi will approve the members youve chose snn. Why would she not . I dont understand why she would not. It would just be more politics. We know what this is. This is impeachment round three, a go after President Trump. What are they going to do . Go after President Trump, the most successful president in our lifetimes. There are a lot of questions for this committee to look at. Who were those people . How well organized were they . And yes, yes, prior to the Event Contact during the day contact, and what did the president do as this is playing out, jordan clearly anything the democrats try to do is going to be youre trying to smear trump. And i think thats going to be a tough line for these republicans to toe, because the first meeting is going to feature Police Officers who were there defending the capitol. So how do they try to defend President Trump, try to support republicans in thwarting the investigation without coming across that theyre attacking the officers who were there during a really violent event . And we know democrats are going to be there to remind the people at home watching that this was a violent riot. It wasnt insurrection. Which gets to the timing here. It gets you to the point where unfortunately, but this should be an important factfinding committee. This is an attack on the united States Government and capitol and the process on a day of certifying the electoral college. Inev inevitably, is there any way around it, it will play out . No. Its going to be central, and President Trump is going to want to he doesnt want to fade away. Thats what i think a lot of gop members the Reason Mccarthy wants to have people on there is youre going to see both sides trying to frame their Argument And Frame it going into the midterm. They dont want to be left out of the process entirely. It will be interesting the outcome. With the other commissions on this, a lot of them didnt even mention or the reports didnt mention trumps name. This one obviously will, and so depending on how the outcome of this looks, whats the public opinion, the president s allies are on this. Jim jordan if theyre approved by pelosi, will be on this. Does that lend some kind of credibility among republicans to this . It remains to be seen. Were assuming this unfolds here. And that there is going to be a report that is produced signed by every member. Its easy to see a scenario where at some point theres effectively a protest. I think a lot of this comes down to discipline by the chairman and Liz Cheney who is going to have to make tough decisions to side with the democrats when youre asking for documents. Going into her primary next year, a fight for her political life. Its easy to see a scenario where republicans put out their own report. I will say this.
