To be the day before the first 2024 Super Tuesday primaries for the republican president ial contest. This is also before the proposed trial dates for two other of his criminal trials. Lets get straight to paula reed for us. Walk us through the Scheduling Proposal here. Reporter the key word is proposal. This is her request. She said in her Press Conference that she wants to try all 19 defendants together, and she wanted to do that in six months. But jake, its a pretty aggressive timeline. Six months to put on a rico case . These are notoriously complicated, tend to be drawn out. And then you have 19 defendants. At least three of whom are expected to challenge this, try to get it moved to federal court. So its unlikely this is going to be granted. Shes also competing for real estate on a very crowded calendar. Lets start with january of next year. There is a request by the Special Counsel to do the January 6th Trial the first week of january. Then you have the e. Jean carol Defamation Case january 15th. Same day as the iowa caucus. Exactly. Manhattan hush money case scheduled for former President Trump at the end of march. And then tentatively scheduled the maralago documents case in may. As you noted, i just laid out the legal events, to say nothing of the many events and deadlines and primaries for him as candidate trump. Yeah. Something like 57 primaries and caucuses. Paula, mark meadows has filed to have this case moved to federal court. So whats the argument . We expected the former president and allies would try to get this state case moved to federal court. If he can get this moved to federal court, he will move to dismiss it. His attorneys argue that hes protected because everything he did they allege in this indictment was done in his capacity as the white house chief of staff, and there is a statute that is meant to protect federal officials from state prosecution. Jake, i dont know that hes going to be successful on this argument of getting it dismissed. But if he or the former president or Rudy Giuliani, who says he will try this too, if they get this moved to federal court, there is at least one big advantage for them, and that is the jury pool. Fulton county is a heavily democratic county. So the jury pool is going to be skewed democratic. If you can get it removed to the federal jurisdiction, they would have a wider jury pool. But i think one of the biggest issues here for the American People is if this is moved to federal court, you wont have cameras documents every moment of this case. Thanks so much. In addition to being indicted in georgia, Rudy Giuliani is staring Down Hundreds Of Thousands of dollars in legal bills and sanctions, and his lawyer claimed he will not be getting any help paying those bills from his client, donald trump. Katelyn, how did the former New York City mayor find himself in such a financial hole . Well, it was working for donald trump after the 2020 election. When you look at all of the legal issues that Rudy Giuliani is facing, and hes facing some personal lawsuits, some difficulties with his business, unpaid phone bills from 2020. The vast majority of what he has to face, and the costliest things that he has to do are respond to Defamation Lawsuits from his work after the 2020 election. There are the criminal matters, which are likely to be quite a low laborious and costly thing, having a lawyer represent him, talking to the Special Counsels office, hes been charged in Fulton County and will now vowing that hes anxious to go to trial to fight it. But the lawsuits related to the 2020 election are progressing, and every time they take another step forward, it costs money to litigate. It costs money for him to get access to his records to turn them oversubpoenas. So all those sues him are going to the court and asking them to sanction Rudy Giuliani for just not showing up essentially in the course of these lawsuits. That doesnt even factor into what happens if he were to lose them, and hes already conceding he did make false statements. We know trumps super pac has spent millions on legal fees for him and his associates. Fans say this is him being generous, critics say this is a way to keep people in line and make sure nobody flips. Either way, why wouldnt Rudy Giuliani have his legal fees paid by the trump super pac . In 2020, Rudy Giuliani was sending them very large bills for their day rate and there was question whether trump wanted to pay that. But all we know is that Rudy Giuliani has a lawyer who has been representing him, or a team of lawyers on these various things related to what he did for trump after the 2020 election. And they have not been paid by donald trump or by trumps pac, the state of america pac. However, one of the things that has happened is that giuliani incurred a debt of 320,000 just to keep his electronic records from 2020 archived and available for lawsuits. That was something where the pac came in, paid that bill and gave him an extra 20,000 just to get him through a little bit more there. But he was in court today. His lawyers were in court today in a Defamation Case, and they are not expecting any more financial help. And it took them months just to get that 340,000 from the trump campaign. Months of negotiations. All right, thanks so much. As Rudy Giulianis legal case unfolds, a cnn original series bigs into how he got there, called giuliani, what happened to americas mayor . Thats a good question. Its air thing Saturday Night at 8 00 eastern, only here on cnn. I want to bring in republican president ial candidate will hurd. Im sorry, congressman hurd, let me start by just asking the question that is in the little of that, Rudy Giuliani, what happened to americas mayor. What do you think happened to him . He got tideed up with donald trump. It seems a lot of people in Donald Trumps orbit that have ended up falling on hard times or ending up in prison. Its really unfortunate. As someone you know, i was in the cia when 9 11 happened. You know, you know the importance of New York City and the former mayors role there. Its pretty disappointing, and ill be tuning in watching to see what happens. Thank you. You have said that trumps fourth indictment, the one from this weekend in georgia, is just the latest example of how Donald Trumps baggage will hand joe biden reelection if trump becomes the republican nominee. Looking at the latest polls, showing that trump and biden are essentially tied, though, a new Quinnipiac Poll out today shows biden at 47 , trump at 46 . Why do you think this is going to hurt trump . It seems to be only helping him solidify the republican base, and i dont see any obvious on the headtohead polls. We should have learned since 2016, polling is a snapshot in time. It is not an indication of who is actually going to vote. These were the same polls two weeks ago when that the legal the ballot issue in ohio came to a vote last week. It was basically a vote about abortion. The week before that vote, everybody thought it was close. It ended up going down by 18 points. We saw this in 2022. The weekend before the election in 2022, the same polls, the same progresnosticators were sag that Kevin Mccarthy was going to have north of 30 people as a buffer, and ended up only having five. Theres no question that right now, donald trump is in the Pool Position of the election. As these issues keep coming out, people are getting sick and tired of this baggage. They want people talking about articulating their vision of the future. How many conversations have you gotten in to some of these terrible policies of joe biden . The 6 bhl illion given to iranians . The fact that republicans havent been able to talk about the problems with the Biden Administration is because were consumed by donald trump. The gop, if we nominate donald trump for president , it is going to go to joe biden, period, full stop. We need to let someone who is not afraid of donald trump but articulating a vision for the future. If your viewers believe in that go to hurdforamerica. Com and give me at least 1. We did cover the 6 billion in Unfrozens Sassets in exchang for those five iranianamericans be remamded to house arrest in iran, just for the record. But i hear you. Lets talk about a couple of issues because i want to talk about the war in ukraine. The u. S. Announced another 200 million aid package. Polls suggest now that most americans are opposed to more fundi ing by the United States support ukraine. There are wide gaps by Political Party on this. You come from an intelligence background, as you noted. Do you think the u. S. Is doing too much, not enough, just right . What do you think . I dont think were doing too much. I think we need to do stuff faster. And the reason that were having that disconnect in polls is people are not articulating why ukraine continues to matter. The broader perspective is, we, the United States, created an International Order after world war ii that benefits us. If we dont defend that International Order, that you are the that hurts us. The dollars spent is about 5 of the budget in the war of ukraine. And we have dismantled the Russian Military without having to send our military to the conflict. I think thats a really good deal. The problem with this administration is theyre not articulating what a vision of victory is. To me, victory means were pushing the russians out of all of ukraine, including crimea and the donbas. We should make sure they have all the equipment they need and even hit and attack positions inside russia. We need to stop trying to make the ukrainians fight this war with hands tied behind their back. If we do this, its not going to be a forever war, but something that can wrap up sooner rather than later. Mike pence said he would eliminate the Department Of Education on day one and return those funds to the states with the mandate they must expand School Choice. What do you make of that plan, do you support it . Well, look, i dont think getting rid of the Department Of Education is the right way to go. I think that the amount of federal dollars that go to school is important. I think School Choice is, i support School Choice, and im also supportive of making sure Public Schools have the same rules and regulations that Magnate Schools do. We need to figure out how to get an ai tutor to every student that needs it. The tools exist in order to do that right now. I was lucky to have parents and an older brother and sister to help me with my homework. Imagine now that we have something that is in everybodys pocket that teaches them how to fish rather than just giving them a fish. And thats something i think would be of valuable use in the Department Of Education, because ultimately in the United States of america, you have income equality, because we have Education Inequality and we can fix that. One week from today is the Republican Debate. You need to hit the polling and donor threshold. If you dont make the debate stage, is that a Campaign Ender for you, do you think . Im pretty confident well hit those requirements before the deadline on august 21st. Im hoping folks help us out with that. Were still working towards those goals. But i feel confident were going to be able to pull that off, and once we do that, we wont have to worry about the second part of the question. Republican president ial candidate will hurd, good to see you. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me on. A gruesome search. One team saying the fires in hawaii were so bad, it looks like everything was cremated. A conservative Appeals Court ruling on the abortion medication. A weex after the Deadly Wildfires ripped through the Island Of Maui In Hawaii and devastated portions of lahaina on western maui, the death toll is climbing. So far only five of the 106 people so far pronounced dead have been identified, because frankly, the remains are unrecognizable. Rescue workers and cadaver dogs are on the scene, combing through the ashes of the homes and businesses that were incinerated by the deadliest u. S. Wildfire in more than a century. Gloria is in lahaina for us right now where crews are searching through the rubble. Reporter the scope of the devastation here stands in stark contrast to mauis stunning beauty. It looks like it started up there and ended down there. Reporter mike taylor with fema found lahaina reduced to ashes. Now a graveyard for everything and everyone caught in the wildfires path. Theres nothing left. Cremation basically. This is the absolute worst disaster ive ever seen. Reporter more than 100 dead. Now search teams face the task of finding many more in the days to come. Using dogs, trying to locate cadavers in this restricted zone. They are absolutely essential to this. They are trained just for human remains. We can walk through and do visual searches. But you find a dog in there, im confident well find everybody. Reporter fema is providing Disaster Relief and families are Fighting Exhaustion amid their grief. I just want to identify the body. The police have really helped, but i have run into a lot of people that i understand are tired. Im tired, too. I havent slept in six days. Reporter for some survivors, not knowing how the deadly fire started, and how it was able to cause so much destruction so quickly, that adds to their suffering. A Warning System that never sounded, despite being tested just days before the fires raged. The cell phones were immobilized. The power lines were down. And we had no service. But the sirens, some were broken, and were investigating that. Reporter some locals point to downed power lines and loss of Water Pressure as the flames ravaged the landscape. Fueled by drought, Extreme Winds and flammable grasses. One local hawaii reporter says he finds solace in the close Nit Community of lahaina, after losing at least four members of his extended family. The people of hawaii have always been rooted in the spirit of family. I know how pain stake ting this. I know the hurt and the deep void we all feel. Our thanks to gloria. With us now is a man whose family lost their home in lahaina. Hes 14th Generation of his Family Living in that town. No one in his family died, but 50 or 60 members of his family have been displaced. I understand youre staying with your dad not far away from the destroyed areas. Tell us what youre seeing in those devastated areas. Straight just destruction. You dont see the town any more. Its completely gone. Its unexplainable and very tragic to just even go there and look at what has happened to our Beautiful Lahaina. I know a lot of residents of the island such as yourself have a lot of questions about why the emergency siren system didnt sound. Whats your message to leadership on the island right now . I would say to the leadership on our island to really i mean, we cant bring the lives back. We cant take anything back. Nothing will ever make up a loss, that we lost, you know, here. Our town, our neighbors, our friends, our family. They cant do anything to take that back, and nothing will ever make it right. But you know what . You need to start listening to your community. Its that simple. You know, actually listen to us. You know, and collectively collaborate with us. You know, not these Community Leaders that are voted in or chosen to hey, you can be a Culture Adviser or something. No, you need these longtime lahaina family and friends to just collaborate with the people that would like to be in the spotlight. Because we are the people, the community of lahaina. Thats why people keep coming back to us, because of the people. And the beauty, of course, but the people is number one. We want to stay in lahaina. Are you worried that youre not going to get the resources or the financial help from hawaii or the u. S. Government that you need in order to rebuild . Yes, 100 . Were already stressed out with the loss of our beautiful town. And now we have to worry that maybe our land wont be, you know, liveable in the states eyes, where we think theyre going to try to take that away from us. Even just funding, who is going to clean up all this debris . Are the owners of each property going to have to clean that up by themselves and come out of their own pocket . The communities from all islands are driving in boats, flying in planes, driving from the other side of the island, bringing in with their own money. I have yet to see or hear of anything from the state or the upper, you know, the president himself to like really come and assess and help out the people that are in need right now that are being displaced and lost all their homes. That night, just over a week ago, must have been devastating and horrific. I cant each imagine what it was like. It was a nightmare. Like the whole time we were just trying to run for safety, for our lives. I know nobody thought that we would be watching our Beautiful Lahaina town burn in flames. You know, it was a nightmare. It was like watching one of those Game Of Throne movies, just watching a fireball destroy this place that god created. You never want to relive that. Secretary of state Antony Blinken spoke on the phone with paul whelan today. Paul whelan is a former u. S. Marine who has been wrongfully detained in russia since 2018. Hes serving his 16year sentence in a remote russian prison camp on trumped up espionage charges, which he and the u. S. Government deny. Paul whelans brother, david, joins us now. David, paul told your parents the conversation was long and frank. What else can you tell us about what paul said to Secretary Blinken . Thats really all we know. Its difficult for paul to have phone calls, and so i think he probably took the opportunity to be as clear as he could about his concerns about his situation with Secretary Blinken. Any idea how the call happened or why it happened today . I dont. I think that Secretary Blinken is obviously sent a message, and that message is for paul and our family, that the u. S. Government is continuing to advocate for paul and his release. And i think its also a message for the kremlin, that the u. S. Government hasnt left up. In fact, their lead Foreign Policy person is willing to call a prisoner, which is astounding. A senior u. S. Official says that russia has now responded in any substantive way to the most recent u. S. Proposal to get your brother home. And now with a wall street reporter there now, there are two. Is that further stalling these negotiations . I dont think so. I think the u. S. Government has a good idea of what the kremlin wants. Its a question whether they can make that concession. Im not sure that they can, and hopefully if they can, they will. But i dont know that the i think the u. S. Government has struggled and continues to struggle concessions that the kremlin wants. So i heard that russia wants russian spies who are in prison to be released in exchange for your brother. And the u. S. Does not currently have any, so it would require the u. S. To lean on allies who have various imprisoned russian spies. Are there any specific ones in countries that you think bringing public attention to it might encourage those Prime Ministers or chancellors or whomever to help the u. S. Out here . Im not sure. I think that the kremlin is always looking for parity. So since they labeled paul a spy, thats what they want. I think the u. S. Government is in the best position to make those phone calls to other diplomats, other foreign leaders, and if there is a concession to be had to negotiate that and hopefully bring paul home. Your sister said last week that negotiations are moving at a glacial pace. How are you and your family staying positive . Its been almost five years now. More than five years. Almost six years, im sorry. Well, just over 4 1 2. So were coming up to day 1,700. I think we are at a good point where it could be 2034 before paul is home. I dont think theres any reason to think what the u. S. Government is doing right now will lead to his release or even release as soon as possible. So we are focusing now he may have to do the 16 years, and the better that we are able to come to grips with that, the more i think well be able to survive it and help him to survive it. David whelan, hopefully youre wrong, but thank you for your time. Well stay on this story. Thank you, jake. The rsf troops are drawn from arab tribes, and together with its leader, they are implicated in the years long genocide in the region against african tribal groupings. Over 850 people flooded the hospital here. Between june 15th to 17th, more than any other period since fighting began in april. Body collectors say according to their count, around 1,000 people were killed on the day of june 15th, buried in dozens of mass depraves. Survivors say the rsf is replicating these same tactics across the region. Even as their supporters celebrate in the aftermath of mass killings, and the sweep of escalating ethnically targeted attacks. An official spokesperson told us that they categorically deny the assertions in our reporting, without commenting on any of the specific incidents that we put to them. In our 2024 lead, just one week away from the first republican president ial debate of the season. While eight candidates have qualified, including trump, desantis, and nikki haley, time is tick, tick, ticking for several other candidates that have yet to meet the polling or donation requirements. But Asa Hitchenson and will hurd say theyre not giving up hope just yet. Im pretty confident were going to be able to hit those requirementss before the deadlie on august 21st. I plan on being on the debate stage there in milwaukee. I like the trend line which were moving towards that goal. So ill need everybodys help to get there, because you need my voice on the debate stage. Just to be clear, its not an amount you need to raise, its not like you have to raise 10 million. You have to have contributions from 40,000 people, which seems like a reasonable standard, i have to say. Do these candidates, hurd and hutchinson, not to mention larry elder and miami mayor francis suarez, do you think they have enough time to get to the stage, and if they dont get there, thats fundamentally the end of their campaigns . I think if they dont get there, its pretty big blow. If they can buy, you know, 40,000 donations what did he do exactly . Offered like 20 for 1 donations. Was it for like kohls or something . I am not deep enough of a reporter. Vivek made it naturally, but he also launched a mary kay ponzi kind of structure to get donations. So you can be creative, but its getting chose. Do you think if they dont make it to the debate, thats it . Sadly i do. Sadly . Yeah. I say sadly because Asa Hutchinson, will herd, these are the very few candidates who have shown courage, who have actually been able to have the backbone to tell the truth about what donald trump would be not just to the Republican Party but to the country if he is allowed to go into the oval office again. And it seems like the republican base, especially the maga voters, dont want that kind of courage, dont want that kind of Back Backbone in their candidates because if they did, Asa Hutchinson would be at the top and hes not. You heard from media. Heckled from the street . Yeah. Theres this new yorker profile that just broke today and theres a great little factoid in it when they were doing polling at republican focus groups, 70 of Republican Voters said they agreed with the statement covid lockdowns were bad. Then if you asked if you said trumps covid lockdowns were bad, 70 of the voters disagreed. So it is purely a if trumps for it, were for it kind of dynamic and thats a really hard thing to fight right now. And, you know, you can look at it in terms of the indictments, all of these things. If its bad for trump, theres just a Reflexive Thing among a big chunk of American Voters that say its not true or its not fair. Vice president pence is also going to be on the debate stage. He weighed in on the first time today on trumps fourth indictment. Take a listen. No one is above the law. And the president and all those implicated are entitled to the presumption of innocence that every american enjoys. I mean trying to have it both ways maybe . You think is this. Shes won elections, unlike carrie lake, who is also talked about as being a vp for him. Its also a stupid time to be alive. Graded on that you arcurve, i t trump thinks he needs somebody with that gravitas. He actually cares a lot about what people think, even though he doesnt. His political advisers are not no, not at all. Some of you would expect would up end the juggernaut if he were going to light a match.
