Kamala harris and Donald Trump, or about two actually talk to one another. And its all happening tonight on this Debate Stage at 9 00 p. M. Eastern inside the national Constitution Center in philadelphia. Tonight. Is each Candidates Chance to directly appeal to millions of voters before ballots go out. They likely wont have an audience. This big. Again, cnns new poll of polls show why both nominees have so much riding on tonight. Its essentially a tied race nationally and what probably matters the most, which is these big Battleground States. It is an especially high risk, high Reward Moment for a Kamala Harris says, shes only been at the top of the ticket now for 51 days and many americans are still learning about her cnn is on the ground in philadelphia covering this massive day in politics from all angles, Priscilla Alvarez is following the Harris Campaign and kristen holmes is talking to the Trump Campaign and both have some new reporting for us. Priscilla want to start with you. What are you hearing from your sources . Well, dana sources are telling me that the Vice President is expected to lean in On Reproductive Rights and needle former President Donald Trump over his muddled messaging on abortion. Of course, the Vice President has emerged as a key voice on this issue starting at the beginning of this its year and democrats see it as a Galvanizing Issue for voters. But this is also an attempt by her and her team to capitalize on an edge that weve been seeing in the polls, Cnn Polling recently showing that she has built on from president Joe Bidens lead on this very issue with an average of 27 percentage points for following her women over former President Donald Trump. And so the Vice President here is again trying to capitalize on this issue. Against the former president tonight. Now cnn is also learning that the Vice President is looking for advice elsewhere, and that includes from Hillary Clinton, who also debated former President Donald Trump. And so this is all been part of what sources have described to me as a robust Debate Prep over the last few days that is going to culminate in this first facetoface encounter tonight, dana priscilla, thank you so much for that great reporting. We have some more coming from The Other Side of the aisle. Donald trump is notoriously reactive. Youve got new reporting on what his aides are trying to do to prep him with how to respond to what we expect will be digs from Kamala Harris. What are you hearing . Yeah, thats right. Dana, they expect some goading remarks from harris, as you said, Donald Trump is notoriously reactive and part of the belief among Donald Trumps team is that the reason that harris, his team wanted those mics on muted was so she could get under his again, so she could go at him into having one of these explosive moments that we know Donald Trump has had before now a number of aides and advisers have warned him against him saying that this would be a huge problem for him, and also telling him that if hes going to react to use facial expressions, not to actually go out there and Say Anything that he can make the same point using his facial expressions, but that anything he says could be it was against him later in a commercial or played on repeat over and over again. Now it was really interesting in a campaign call yesterday, Tulsi Gabbard was asked if the tone was going to shift Donald Trumps tone when he was facing off with Kamala Harris versus his debate with president Joe Biden. And she essentially said no, but that is exactly what his team is worried about, not just this team, but his allies that hes going to come out and be extremely aggressive. They understand that his aggressive nature, that this kind of biting remarks that he makes is going to play differently with a woman. So they have stressed to him over and over again do not respond. If youre going to respond at all, make sure your response is on your face, not an actual verbal response, but obviously dana, there is only one person who knows which Donald Trump is going to show up on that stage . Age tonight. And that is Donald Trump himself. We will see if he can heed this advice. Yeah. And i think Donald Trump isnt necessarily always sure which Donald Trump is going to show up until thank you so much, kristen. Appreciate that terrific reporting. What more are you hearing from your sources . Well, look, i think the Harris Campaign is very much aware that for a lot of people tuning in tonight, it is going to be a first impression that the Vice President gets to make to an audience. The size of which they may not get again, before election day. I do think it is sort of the second and third impression that she might itd be making to some people that they might be even more focused on. These are the people who may have tuned in for the democratic national convention. Maybe liked parts of what they saw, but are still undecided. The other thing i think in this so goes without saying its very obvious, but i do think we should say it. They want to make sure that she can avoid a perry oops, moment. And frankly, a Joe Biden Debate Day, right . The fact that this debate at that cnn hosted weeks ago ended up completely changing the trajectory was obviously because president biden unexpectedly had a completely disastrous debate against Donald Trump. That is something that they fact they should be able to avoid by sticking to the Talking Points and landed some punches when the moments present themselves. And i want to look at some extraordinary numbers we have been talking about how much its almost impossible to digest, how much money is already in this race and how much the campaigns are racing, racing. And one of the main avenues of spending this money for both camps. Their campaigns, and even beyond by their allies is defining Kamala Harris just look at these numbers just in the last 30 days, 194 Million of ads focused on harris. And by the way, thats negative, but its also positive. Theres some bio adds that her campaign is doing 69 Million focused on trump. Yet the amount of money thats coursing through the system. Its almost at Overload Food and this is to sort of mjs point. Its hard for me to imagine their voters in america that still dont have a sense of who these people are, right . And yet they keep Coming Up in Focus Groups. They keep Coming Up in polls. But both campaigns have really tried to use this last say, 56 weeks to define harris youre seeing that a little bit in the polls. But this is her chance on a stage with Donald Trump to i dont want to say introduce or reintroduce, but really make her case and its really the contrast that they want to focus on. This isnt just about harris talking about her agenda. Its her agenda compared to trumps, and its in the future tense i just imagine so many times were going to hear tonight from Kamala Harris talking about what shes going to do, not necessarily what shes done for the last three. Well, you asked you Cant Figure out who out there who doesnt know about Donald Trump. Im with you, but 9 of people in the New York Times Sienna Poll said these, and these are likely voters, said that they dont know its, there you go. 9 say that they need to learn more about Donald Trump, but its that 28 . So just under a third of likely voters one to know more about Kamala Harris, which again, is totally understandable. Her campaign knows that and they appreciate that, which is a very big part of her strategy going into tonight yeah. And i think its worth remembering. This is a moment that there are a lot of people who dont pay attention to these things until the very end. This may be the only thing that they consume until the final week of the campaign. I do think that harris has more at stake in this debate just because of that introduction factor, people might know a little bit about her, but dont know a whole lot. They may have seen her speeches, but havent seen, for instance, your interview with her . I do think also though that Donald Trump has a lot at stake in this debate as well because Kamala Harris is a popular politician right now, its kind of rare that we see popular politicians right now. Shes got a favorable rating that is generally a little bit higher than her unfavorable rating. And so he needs to bring her back down. Its not just the policy stuff. Its also the personal stuff. And so i think that creates a dilemma for trump, where he wants to bring her down personally and kind of Take A Bite out of those vibes that shes gotten over the last several weeks. But sometimes when he feels the need to do that, he can bring things into these other areas that his campaign gets very nervous well, speaking of that, lets talk about the Woman Factor here. The fact that he is debating a woman. He did so in 2016 dean first i want to play a little bit of sort of a taste of what happened in 2016 she doesnt have the look. She doesnt have the stamina i said she doesnt have the stamina. And i dont believe she does have the stamina. Believe me she has tremendous hate in her heart, such a massey was fond it can haley was on Fox Yesterday i believe it was and she of course, is somebody who did endorse Donald Trump hasnt been out campaigning for her for him, rather but some of her support in the primaries did come from women who did not want to, republican women who did not want to support Donald Trump, listen to what she said about how Donald Trump should comport himself tonight Donald Trump and j. D Vance Need to change the way they speak about women. You dont need to call kamala dm. She didnt get this far you know just by accident when you call even a democrat woman, dumb republican women get their backs up to the Bottom Line is, we went on policies, stick to the policies, leave all the other stuff thats how he can win and mj, i know you have some new reporting on this element of the Kamala Harris Debate Prep . Yeah. We just reported that one person, Kamala Harris spoke with over the weekend is this Hillary Clinton, who of course is very familiar with what it is like to go up against Donald Trump on the Debate Stage, its incredible watching that footage from eight years ago of the former president calling Hillary Clinton nasty, thats the word that he has used this time around to describe Kamala Harris, the campaign is preparing for all kinds of its all its derogatory comments, namecalling because theyre going up against Donald Trump as kristen was saying earlier, hes the only person that knows exactly which version is going to show up. I do know that clinton and harris over the weekend and their conversation did talk about Debate Prep. I dont know exactly what was said, but one thing that i was told is that when Hillary Clinton sort of looks back on those debates from eight years ago, she does think that the Vice President has a real opportunity tonight. When she is going up against Donald Trump to allow him to selfdestruct according to one person i spoke with and thats basically this idea that less could be more when youre confronting Donald Trump, that if he hes going off on a tangent or he seems to be unraveling, sort of letting him go down that road. And in some ways, she almost doesnt have much of a choice because of this muted mics rule, that the campaign has made such a fuss about and as we prepare for this, each campaign is trying to get into the head of the other candidate. We mentioned how much money Kamala Harris in particular has. So shes got a little money to play with quite literally. Lets look at an ad that they are targeting to the airwaves in florida theres 70 78yearold billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems she had a big Crowd Audit crowd, this weird obsession with Crowd Size and before you answer that, i want to bring in The Other Side of this and knew Trump Campaign memo saying, by shielding her, meaning, harris, of course, from the press, and insulting her, insulating. Forgive me, insulating her from genuine interactions with the Boat Voters they have set a high bar for kamala to clear. Now that her honeymoon is over, the debate will be the first time kamala will answer tough questions. I will take issue with that personally ahead. Well, i think mj made this great point which is less is more and i dont want to, i dont think we make hamilton references anymore, but for those of us is still watched weather kids, you know, though i talked less smile, more, and that could be advice for both Candidates Tonight as to getting inside of Donald Trumps head you know, Donald Trumps live rent free in a lot of peoples heads. The other thing that i think is really important here is i was looking back at the 2019 debate, you know, Kamala Harris hasnt debated since 2019 when she was a democratic president ial can of course Trump Hasnt debated except for or against biden. This onetime this cycle. Those early debates back then she was the runaway winner in cnn polls and other polls that were conducted. She has shown that she has an ability to succeed in this forum, even though her campaign ultimately didnt amount to much. And then of course, she debated Mike Pence, which was a biggie. All right. But again, i would have asked the states to submit alternate british slates of electors and let the country have the debate about what actually matters and what kind of an election that we have to be clear if Mike Pence had done that, it would have triggered a constitutional crisis chaos, the likes of which we have not seen in 150 years. I want to dive into all of this with my an incredible panel and just remind you all what Mike Pence said to me about his decision. He did this during a Town Hall in June Of 2023 anyone who puts themselves above the constitution should never be president in the first place in anyone who asks anyone else to put them over the constitution should never be president again id hope the President Trump would come around on our difference about that tragic day and about my role and i still hope he does well, he hasnt yet Vice President pence and one other thing i wanted to point out that something that i learned in working on a book that is out now americas deadliest election, it is about the elections in 18, 72 and 18 76 and 18, 76. This very debate happened because several states who were completely genuinely corrupt and full of fraud sent multiple states as slates of electors to washington. And there was a debate back then, just like in 2021, about what to do and the question was, who would count the electoral votes republicans. Remember this. These are republicans who are the party of lincoln. They insisted article two, section one, clause three of the constitution stated clearly the president of the senate shall open all certificates and the votes shall then be counted democrats countered that the Vice President s role was largely ceremonial that it was constitutionally limited to opening the return served. He seemed like a difficult argument for him to make and then listening to Mike Pence which made me think his pence endorsed yet it seemed to me that like oh, like, you know, and not to give our competitors too much of a heads up, but we should all be pressing on figuring out is Mike Pence going to endorse because he was pretty crystal clear theyre like there was it didnt you mean to endorse harris, right . It seemed to me thats the direction he was going in. My phone may blow up with pence supporters saying, what are you saying . But like i listened to the merom like, wow, i shouldnt i should have been in touch with his team asking, like you said, this, when is he going to endorse . Maybe im going to eat crow on this, but he is so focused on an Issue Abortion that its hard for me to imagine him endorsing Kamala Harris, but maybe im wrong. I think whats whats really striking about that Vance Clip that we played at the start is that this is a question that republicans had been asked a lot over the last four years. And generally weve seen very few republicans step forward and say, i would i would do, i wouldnt do what Mike Pence did. I would do a different thing. They kind of talked around it and say, you know, there were irregularities and a lot of people have questions about this and i want to know more, you know, its been in four years now by which to judge whether this election should have been overturned if theres not evidence for that now, you can talk about letting us have the debate over this, but that debate has been had. There is still not evidence to back that up. And, you know, the fact that j. D. Vance would be taking this position is a position that even three years ago would not have been something that we would expected even to many republicans to take. I mean, in some ways maybe were overthinking this. I mean, j. D. Vance is Donald Trumps Running Mate. You are constantly still continuing to sort of audition for the job when you are in that position, we heard him saying different things and taking different positions when he was hoping to be chosen. Now that he is in his position, i think the the sort of accepted you know, what he accepts when hes speaking in public, when hes doing interviews. Is that the boss Donald Trump is watching every word that he is saying. Okay, lets talk about cats not cat, ladies, but these memes that are going around which are really, really viral, thanks to j. D. Vance suggesting saying that haitian migrants are eating peoples pets, peoples cats you see there an example of whats out there. And this is just one iota of everything that is out there on the Internet Today the Vice President ial nominee for the republican party said, in a post that will maybe this could have been a false rumor that this is out there, but in true trump style, did not back away, doubled down. He said in short, dont let the Cry Babies in the media dissuade you fellow patriots. Keep the cat memes flowing. Aside from the everything that this suggests about racist overtones. Just blatantly when it comes to a political strategy, hawns how is this helpful with the voters . The only up at all voters dont matter, but the voters that matter most right now, persuadable voters in swing states, the short answer is, i dont know the sort of more tortured answered is that every day that the conversation is on immigration and some Shape Or Form is the day that republicans want to have and so we, i think youre rightly pointing out this sort ugly nature of these suggestions. But anytime the conversation is on immigration, its not on a variety of other issues and thats in all the polls indicates thats clearly what Trump And Vance want to litigate this election on the big immigration issue. But i dont like on the other stuff, im not theres no good way to describe what theyre doing. Other than sort of call it out for the racism that it is. Theres just theres no other way to talk about yeah. No, its its gross and inflammatory and it is racebaiting for sure. I do think there is a bit of a Balancing Act for the Harris Campaign when they see something like this. Sure, theres going to be an instinct to hit back and say this is not sensical, its not true on the other hand, like i dont think you want to add fuel to the fire and give more to this idea that is basically made up i also do think that the people who are going to be inclined to believe that, you know, as a result of, you democrats and their actions, there pets are going to get eaten by immigrants like i just dont think that those are necessarily the people that the Harris Campaign is going to be targeting as gettable for them. And its also, i would say even a Judgment Call for us. Like, how much do you do you talk about something that is so ridiculous and so racebased but at the same time because its a thing thats out there. Its important to correct. That doesnt take a lot yeah, it was definitely like a relief to have somebody that mean in respect to biden as young, shes willing to like trump you know, i think she will really like call him on his crap. I always love talking to you about what you learn from these persuadable swing voters. Whats your sort of big picture take away in addition to what we just said about the piece that you wrote . Yes. I mean, look ive been listening to voters talk about Kamala Harris now for years, because she was the Vice President and people would always said, look, i dont see her, i dont know or i dont know what she does. And so they had this kind of negative impression of her, but as she has become the president ial candidate for a lot of democrats the Speed And Alacrity with which she just reconstituted that democratic Goal Coalition was wild because i was watching people really fall away from Joe Biden, even soft democrats. And so now were in persuasion territory, right . Shes got a win over these sort of rightleaning independents, soft gop voters. And theyre still in the y dont know that much about or id like to hear more, but whats interesting to me is those voters are out on trump when you see a poll like the New York Times poll, what you see is that trump is stuck at 46, 47 . Thats a ceiling. He doesnt have anywhere to go. Shes got room to grow and says shes gotten. But this group, its like its not enough just to vote against trump. Shes got to give them a reason to be for her. And thats what theyre looking for. They want to be like yeah i like this thing about her as opposed to im just doing it because i hate trump on that. There. Youre talking about people who have already moved away from trump, but you also have a group of people who have spoken to who are still considering voting for trump, but also boarding voting for trump, but also considering voting for harris. Lets listen to some of them. He was a prosecutor so i mean, in that respect, shes going to have a little bit more idea of whats right and wrong i like her. Im not a democrat. I dont care about the democrats that much. But i would vote for shipping because of the foundation. Shes got under xis a child of immigrants oh, i think thats going to help her understand both sides of the border issue. She reminds me a lot of obama, just the way she carried herself the way she speaks thats, so fascinating. Yeah, it is. I mean, basically what these voters have been saying is im open, like give me a pitch and they also talk about how much they dont like trump. And so one of the things thats interesting in this dynamic is the more people see of kamala, the more they like her the more people see of trump, the less they like him. And that is always been true about Donald Trump. That is why his campaign team, for all their bluster about, oh, you dont see her. Its him. They often theyre like here, give us your phone and go to the Golf Course because they want this guy out of the public guy because they can see the relationship to Donald Trump being highprofile in the news and his revolt ratings going down among these swing voters. And just going back to what you said about people still learning about Kamala Harris again, ive said this before. Ill say now its completely understandable. Most people dont have a clue about Vice President s on either side of the aisle unless there are extraordinary times. And with her in particular, that because the case Tom Friedman wrote an oped this week, thats titled the 23 Words Harris needs to say to when joe and i got a lot of things right. But we got some things wrong too. And here is what i have learned. I think thats good advice i agree with the spirit of the advice. So in the sense that look, i think that what voters really have their Antennas Off For is authenticity. I think would kamala has struggled with in the past is look, its hard being the Vice President , you got to be out there for somebody elses behalf or you dont get to say what you think. I even think part of the reason she seemed to struggle a little bit in 2019 is because she was trying to run to the left of this big democratic field. Im not sure thats who she is. I think that she needs to go in there and say whats true. I know this is crazy advice, but i think just say whats true. She should say if she thinks that she and Joe Biden got some things wrong, she should say they got some things wrong. I do think voters really like it when they actually hear for politicians say something like, you know, while i was Vice President , i learned a lot about how to be president for all americans but i think that we play a Parlor Game here in dc, like she has to say these words. This is exactly how she has to do it. Look, she has been so much better at this when she has been able to speak for herself and say exactly what she thinks. And so i think she should go in there and be as authentic version of herself as possible. Say whats true to her because i think for her to win this debate, she has got to people who whove got to be like i see this, i like this. And i think theres a lot of i was listening to your panel beforehand this this question about should she try to rattle trump . Heres what Rattles Trump a woman showing a competent command of the Policy Details and sort of what she believes that will rattle him plenty. He rattles himself. She doesnt need to do things to get under his skin. Forget about him, talk to the american people. They want to meet you. Well, thats one of the things i was going to asked you and that is about the sort of female factor and what youre hearing from your Focus Group participants, not about her in particular, but the way that they view him as he is facing a woman, but even more importantly, what he says and continues to say about women. As he is running again yeah, you know, heres the thing about that. I hear from voters, which is, look, Donald Trump always wants to tap in to an undercurrent of fear and the american people that a Woman Cant do this job. And i hear voters articulate this a lot. They see things like, you know, other countries, their leaders dont respect women. Its, im just concerned about how a woman would be as President Pierce Thing about Donald Trump hes a little bit of a standin for an autocrat. Somebody actually articulated this in one of the Focus Groups. How she handles trump is going to project for voters how she would handle people like vladimir putin, how she would handle these, these autocrats across the world that i think these voters are concerned about. And i think if she shows, like i said, command of the policies so details, but also an unwillingness to sink to his Level And Ability to handle him on the stage. Thats the kind of thing that would give voters confidence, not just about her ability to beat Donald Trump, but her ability to deal with World Leaders that might be hostile towards the united states that is so interesting, sara, i always learn so much from you.
