Im trevor noah. Our guest tonight is a bestselling author and shes a breakout star from the democratic president ial debates, Marianne Williamson is joining us, everybody cheers and applause also on tonights show, guns are back in the news. The new hot vacation trend and do you like corn, doesnt matter youre going to be eating a lot more of it. Lets catch up on todays headlines. War hmm. Good god, yawl. What is it good for . According to china, hitting back at the u. S. We begin with escalating trade war with china and the growing concern about its effect on the u. S. Economy. The United States is officially labeling china a currency manipulator, accusing the nation of deliberately lowering the value of its money to sell goods cheaper and gain a competitive advantage. China also delivering a blow to u. S. Farmersers, announcing it has asked stateowned firms to stop buying u. S. Agriculture products. Wreath is not happy with this trade war. The dow plunged more than 750 points monday, its worst day of the year. Trevor yes, the trade war between america and china has escalated bigly. Laugh will have this thing is no joke. Its tanking the markets, its straining diplomatic relations and, in fact, yesterday, when i opened a fortune cookie, it just read, sup bitch. Heres your lucky numbers. laughter now one of the bigger issues for the United States is that if china stops buying american farming products, the american farming industry is going to crash. Theyve already planted the crops, so theyre going to need to figure out what to do with them. You know, getting rid of corn, that parts going to be easy because every democrat running for president eats two ears of corn at the iowa state fair and if any calculations are correct thats about 10 million. It work out. The other vegetables will be harder. I think we might need oprah back. She can move products. Have her come out, you know what my favorite thing is . Soybeans everybody will be like, i love soybeans so it doesnt look like the u. S. And china are close to stopping the trade war. Those arent the only countries with beef now. Tensions between india and pakistan are getting worse after india removed cashmeres governing status and korea launched missiles into the sea. This is also bad for the environment, kim jong un were trying to pull plastic out of the ocean, this asshole is throwing entire missiles in if all the constant bad news popping up on your phone is proving too much, maybe you need a vacation to really unplug. Well move to a popular vacation trend getting off the grid. More people are searching for trips to help them get away from it all and disconnect. No cell service and no wifi is starting to mean no vacancy. This converted fire tower in rural oregon costs 200 a night or 2,000 a night in alaska to shut it out. Crazy but necessary. Near me the tree bones resort in california offers 300 a night, and a human sized birds nest, and the fact that theres no cell service or wifi for guests. Trevor okay, okay. You know what . That seems like a good idea. Unplug your phone and go to a place with no cell service. When that giant bird comes back to its nest, good luck calling for help. laughter also, can we admit these resorts are just rebranding how bad they are . Just like, yeah, we dont have wifi, its a special feature every shitty resort should do this. You love hot yoga . Great news, our air conditioning has been broke for eight months. laughter finally, while some people are trying to find ways to get off their devices, theres a new generation of parents using tickology to help raise kids. Struggling to get your kids to help around the house . Yours always help. You know that. Chorze was designed by a couple who pay their kids. Not at my house. You can continue to live here. Trevor this is an interesting idea. Parents can use an app to tell their kids what chores need to be done and they can send their parent a picture to show them its done. Kids know how to use Technology Better than their parents so theyll photoshop a room and get paid. laughter having kids who dont want to do chores is such a first world problem. In africa, we have an app called whipping their ass, no Internet Connection required laughter but also at the same time, ~bleep parents. Yeah, you know what . I said it. I said it. I dont like this idea of parents. Like, they give birth to us and all of a sund we have to clean their house . Huh . What is it . I didnt apply for this job, you made me now im washing the dishes. Its essentially a personal form of slavery. Imagine if you took a random person off the street and treated them like a kid, clean my house i want to leave youre not going anywhere you would be guilty of six felonies. Parents trick you, they spend first six years treating you like royalty, oh, littlele princess. Then you hit seven andeth go mow the lawn its a reverse cinderella. Chores were everything for me, including lawn triwithout a washing machine. I spent half my childhood as an appliance. laughter my closest friend was a toaster oven. We never got out laughter you know what the worst part was when your parents would just make you clean up the yard. How do you clean up outside . laughter theres going to be dirt on the dirt. Oh, theres leaves. Because theres trees, you asshole kids dont need an allowance, they need reparations. Okay, now that ive won the kids choice awards, moving on to the main story. cheers and applause lets get into something a little more serious. Since the two Mass Shootings over the weekend in el paso and dayton, the conversation around sensible gun regulation in america has been re ignited because, lets be honest, having two shootings backtoback makes the conversation unavoidable. Same way for getting your kid once at home means youre unlucky, but if you do the same thing twice, social workers are coming in. Tragedies seem to have motivated d. C. Some proposed taking guns from people who show signs of threatening behavior while Many Democrats are focusing on universal background checks, renewing the assault weapons ban and getting high capacity magazines banned which makes perfect sense i mean, the mass shooter in dayton had a gun that could fire 100 bullets before he needed to reload, which is insane, i dont care what anybody says. I know some people would be, like, we need guns to hunt, but if you need 100 bullets to kill a deer, maybe you should try fishing. laughter while most legislators are trying to figure out which laws will curve future Mass Shootings, fox news has chosen to spend most of their time telling people shootings have nothing to do with guns. Starting with Mike Huckabee who thinks we shouldnt have fewer guns, we should just have more god. Its our cultural fought and part of what weve done, weve created a culture in which weve said there is no god. The common denominator in all this is not the particular weapon, its the hate inside the heart, its the loss of morality, its that disconnecting from a god who values all people and who would never let me do that to another person, thats just not how were hard wired from the father above. Trevor yes, according to huckabee and many people on the right the real problem in america is not ac stoas guns, its lack of access to god. If people were more religious they wouldnt do bad things. My only problem with the whole god argument is everyone seems to have a different idea of what god is saying, all right . He says, like, god and evil will never mix if you have god in your heart youre a good person. In the middle ages the crusaders said god told them to kill people in the middle east. In the 1960s in america, white evangelicals said god told them black and white people shouldnt mix. So either people pick and choose when and how to use god or maybe gods just so far away hes hard to hear, you know . Yeah, maybe its the distance. Hes up there, Love Thy Neighbor and people are like, what . Black people should be slaves . laughter i dont know where huckabee is getting this from because even in the bible people who were close to god still do really bad things. The story of king david, he literally walked with god all the time, they hung out together, but that didnt stop david from killing a guy just so he could sleep with his wife. Thats in the bible, by the way. David loved god but he loved ass just a little bit more. laughter look at him in that painting, hes going, oh, got to get that ass look at that face davids nasty laughter so thats huckabee, leave guns alone and give it to god. Now, if you dont think religion is going to solve americas Mass Shootings, luckily the president ial Advisory Network has another solution. Instead of fewer guns, they just say we need more parents. These young men have no father, no father at home. So you have to go back to some of the institutions and ask yourself whats different ant america now . Nobody really believes this is about donald trump or assault weapons. If only young men are the problem. No communities, no father, no mentors, no associations, no personal responsibility. What happens when boys are dad deprived they have no role model to channel their tees to the drone constructively. Trevor why does the guy sound so creepy when hes saying that . laughter to be honest, i dont think this is the worst argument in the world. It does help young men to have a Stable Family life, but its also hard to have a Stable Family life if your dad is getting gunned down at a walmart. Like, i would love for every young man in america to magically have a perfect upbringing that helps get rid of their rage, but i have no idea how youre going to achieve that, right, because youre write laws that will regulate guns. You cant write laws forcing people to have a good family life. Is it just going to be like a dad at the door, like, kids, daddy decided to run away with his secretary. Actually, the law says you have to stay. Damn you congress lets play some catch. laughter as usual, the best ideas on fox can be found in one place, sean hannity, fox news host and neck with hair. According to him, americas problem isnt too many guns, its not enough guns. I have been calling for a long time, every school, secure the perimeter of those schools. Equip them with retired police and military. I want guys to donate 15 hours. I think we could cover every school every hour, every day at a metal detector and i think were going to have safer schools, have one armed guard on every floor of every school, all over every mall, the perimeter and inside every hall of every mall. Now that gives us a an instant response opportunity that we wouldnt normally have. Trevor every hall of every mall . That sounds like the bleakest dr. Seuss book every. In every hall of every mall, on every floor and every door, we need a guard in every room or well end up in the tomb. Good night, pumpkin muah good night, daddy, im glad the law made you stay. laughter this isnt a new idea, after every mass shooting, hannity and more people are saying having more armed guards everywhere is the way to stop the shooters. What they forget is guns are everywhere in america. Parkland had an armed guard but he was afraid to go in. The Country Music festival in vegas had an armed guard but the guy shot from the room in the hotel. The Police Responded to the mass shooting in dayton in less than 330 seconds. That is an amazing job by the police. They couldnt have done a better job and, still, nine people were killed in 30 seconds. So i dont think people think about this the right way. Hannity mentions schools and malls, but Mass Shootings can happen anywhere. You put an armed guard in every walmart, movie theater, synagogue, mosque, church, every office building, bar, nightclub, concert, garlic festival . You realize we would all have to become police. And i dont want to be a policeman. I dont. Im mixed. Its confusing. laughter the white half of me would always put the black half of me over. I would never get anywhere. laughter the strangest part of the argument is hannity and fox news talk every day about protecting american freedoms, but if everyone in america is forced to live in a world of perimeter fences, metal detectors, armed guards in every hall, it starts to feel like society is living in a prison and the only thing thats free with is gun. Pack back. cheers and applause gatorade. Packs carbs to refuel and electrolytes to replenish so you can bring the heat. Nothing beats gatorade. Ahahahahaha. Hahaha. Discover the rainbow taste the rainbow roxana our students dont have parttime needs. So they absolutely cannot have parttime solutions. Angelia one of changes that we need is smaller class sizes. Rosanne we need a lot more school nurses, a lot more school counselors. Rodney counselors provide that social, emotional core thats needed. Marisa schools need to be safe places for our children to learn. Ever every student has the right to quality education. No matter what neighborhood you live in. Angelia we are cta. Rosanne we are cta. Marisa we are cta. Narrator because we know quality Public Schools make a better california for all of us. Narrator because we know quality Public Schools my lady those darn seatbelts got me all crumpled up. Thats ok hey, guys hi mrs. Patterson. Wrinkles send the wrong message. Sorry. Help prevent them before they start with new downy wrinkleguard. Thats better. So you wont get caught with wrinkles again. cheers and applause trevor welcome back to the daily show. My guest tonight is a activist, spiritual counselor, and bestselling author who is running for president of the United States. Please welcome Marianne Williamson cheers and applause welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me on. Trevor it is an absolute pleasure having you on, especially considering your journey in this race. When your name was first announced, it was oprahs spiritual advisor, and i remember being like, im sorry, what . laughter and then when the debates came around, you were standing on the stage, and you are a spiritual person, you are somebody who speaks, you know, in larger ideas than just what is happening. It seemed like you were out of your depth. After the second debate, though, you were the most googled name in i think 49 states and all of a sudden people went from Marianne Williamson the joke to, huh, maybe she says a few things we like, maybe shes got a plan. Why do you think youre connecting with so many people who first thought that you were a joke. First of all, even if you look at the first debate, the substance of my words were as serious as any substance on that debate stage. It was the way i delivered my words was a little funny in a couple of places, but the things i actually talked about were as substantial as what i talked about this time. Trevor right. Im not saying anything everybody i know isnt saying. People have a deeper conversation than the establishment conventional, political dialogue presents, and, so, im simply talking about things the way i believe people talk these days. People understand that more is going on than just externalities and people understand if you want to transform your life you will have to address things on a deeper level than just the fixes on the outside. Trevor you speak about levels, consistently levels or higher powers. Thats what you said in one of the debates. You said this needs help from a higher power. I was, like, but youre running for president of the United States, so is that the second highest power is this this is a genuine question. What do you believe that means . Well, its interesting because Abraham Lincoln spoke that way. Were living in an aberrational time that the left has become so oversecularized in its conversation. Traditionally on the right there be a focus of morality, but on the left issues of public morality. War and peace is a moral issue. How we tax the rich and make it so much easier for rich people to get richer and harder for everybody else to make it, thats a moral issue. The fact we have millions of American Children going to School Every Day chronically traumatized in schools that dont have adequate supplies to teach a child to read and if the child cant read by age eight, the chances of High School Graduation are drastically diminished and the chances of incarceration are drastically increased in the richest country in the world. Thats a moral issue. The fact we have 13 million children who are hungry in america is a moral issue to me. So issues of politics should take as much moral consideration and reflection as anything else. And the fact that we have a society where we have made economic principles, not an economic principle that has led us to anything other than the largest wealth inequality in almost 100 years, 1 of americans owning more wealth than the bottom 90 , 40 of all americans struggling on a daily basis, what are we doing . Trevor so what laws would you then come in with on day one . What laws would you try and enact that would complement how you feel . What concrete laws do you think need to match your feeling . Bad laws got us here, good laws will get us out of here. Trevor right. First of all, we need to pass a law and not only legislation but probably also constitutional amendment for public funding of federal campaigns because right now, we have applause because the undue influence of money, particularly corporate money on our governmental policy is the cancer underlying all these other cancers. So thats number one. Thats what weve got to deal with. Then we need a massive infusion of economic hope and opportunity into the life of the average american. Were going to get there by repealing the 2017 tax cut, 2 trillion tax cut that gave 83 cents of every dollar to the very richest individuals and corporations. You put back in the middle class tax cut. Notice thats not an economic stimulus, that bill. Then you close the subsidies. Why did we pay 26 billion to the fosing fuel companies alone last year in subsidies . Martin luther king said if they give it to rich people they call it a subsidy. If they give it to poor people, they call it a handout. Then you realize our government actually advocated and passed a law against the interest of the American People making it, because of the lobbying by big pharma, that the United States government cannot actually negotiate for drug prices with big pharmaceutical companies. You do that, we have cash onhand. Then we do what we should be doing, we take care of each other. applause trevor mmm i dont know about you but the numbers are lining up. More with Marianne Williamson when we come back. cheers and applause im on the pill. Im on the pill. Im on the pill. Im on the pill, too. But its not birth control. Its truvada for prep®, a oncedaily prescription medicine for adults that, when taken every day along with using safer sex practices, can help lower my chances of getting hiv through sex. I use condoms. But i talked to my doctor about doing more. He said that because i had a higher chance of getting hiv through sex, truvada for prep could be an option for me. She also told me that truvada alone may not keep me from getting hiv. And it does not prevent other stis or pregnancy. You must be hivnegative to take truvada for prep. Eligible patients may pay as little as a zero dollar copay. Find out more at truvada. Com. cheers and applause trevor welcome back to the daily show. Were joined by democratic president ial candidate Marianne Williamson. At the debates, one of your lines has become iconic and that is, we are not dealing with a healthcare system, were dealing with a sick care system. What does that mean . What it means is that the conversation were having is how to treat people once theyre sick. We also have to talk about why theres so much more chronic disease in america. Trevor and why is that . Well, because of our chemical policies, our agriculture policies, our food policies, our Environmental Policies and even our economic policies given that our economic policies cause so much economic stress and anxiety on a daily basis, and stress causes illness, but so many times were not talking about those things because, in order to talk about those things, we have to talk about policies with Chemical Companies and Agriculture Companies and oil and gas and so forth. All im saying is that on everything we should know that the American People should feel safe. Clearly, the faa was too close with boeing or we wouldnt have the boeing max disasters. Clearly the e. P. A. Is too coz cy with dow chemical or we wouldnt be selling pesticides we know harm a developing childs brain, and clearly the f. D. A. Has been too close with big pharma in the fact that we have this opioid crisis. This is not dangerous to discuss. People say im crazy and dangerous. I think whats dangerous and a little bit crazy is were not discussing it. cheers and applause trevor lets discuss, then, one of the bigger issues that has really resonated with many people from the debates, and that is the issue in and around reparations. Yes. Trevor when it came to reparations, you came with the numbers. You were heres what black people were owed, heres how much theyre owed, here is how much black people should be paid by america. This is not a favor, this is repay ago debt. Why have you been so adamant about this issue . Because you have been in it from the beginning. This has been a core issues of yours. Why is this. I have been talking about it since my book healing america came out in 1997. America will not have a future if we dont clean up the original character defect of racism. It is not my belief or experience that the average american is racist, but i think the average american is woefully understood educated about the history of race in the United States. applause so i find, and i find this in the whitest states in america, that when you actually ive become an American History teacher for a few minutes and talk about the first slaves were brought over enslaved persons were brought over in 1619, slavery not aboldshed till 1865, thats 250 years, followed by 100 years of institutionalized violence against black people, thats 350 years and thats longer than this country is in existence. Tecumseh sherman promised to every family of slave family of four after the civil war a few acres and a mule. Martin luther king they were freed but what were they freed to . Im not minimizing the struggles or successes of any ancestors black or white, but the issue of economic restitution, that gap that existed at the the end of the civil war has simply not been addressed. It has not been achieved, and its time. cheers and applause trevor ill tell you this you sound a lot more sane when you have more than a minute to speak. Marianne williamson, everybody. Well be right back. cheers and applause [whispering] barb. Barrb barb i can taste my beer. Samuel adams sam 76 finally a refreshing lager that you can taste.
